A Room of Fire Finished

As Victoria entered the room, her jaw nearly dropped to the floor.  Spread out in front of her was an array of candles, floor to ceiling, that would shock the devil himself.  Absolutely not able to believe her eyes, she was utterly shocked that the entire room hadn't yet burned down.  Around her, she saw many students preparing candles, dipping them in and out of wax, over and over again.  The red-head was slightly puzzled at the sight of so many students already gathered around to work.  She wasn't sure whether she was late or they had all arrived early.

Making her way to the left side of the room, far away from the door, Victoria sat down on a stone in front of a fireplace - another source of fire in the already hot and glowing room.  It would have been a lie to say that the room wasn't magically beautiful, but it also would have been a lie to say that the heat of the room wasn't slightly out of control.  Luckily for Victoria, the girl liked heat much more than cold.  Surprisingly, no one was yet sitting at this fireplace, which was just fine by Victoria.  Her plan was to sit here for a moment and wait for the instructor to come over, someone she assumed was the woman that was currently working to help other students with their own assignments.  As she waited for the teacher to make her way over to her, she pulled out a book from her bag and began to read it, praying that it wouldn't burst into flames.

A Room of Fire Finished
With excitement, she watched as one student after another arrived in her classroom. A feeling of unknown pride filled her stomach and she realized, that she would have the joy of seeing young students enter her classroom on a daily basis now. She nodded at the ones that met her gaze while coming in, while some, especially the younger ones, seemed to be too shy to try and interact with her right now. Béatrice didn't mind they would get more comfortable as time would go by, or so she hoped.

She walked some steps with the aid of her walking stick to make more room for the incoming students. Some immediately went to find a spot at the fireplaces, some others were more hesitant. "You may take a seat, dear," she said, pointing at one of the free cauldrons. As she was looking at the boy finding his seat, a girl went passed her to get some of the herbs on the table. With curiosity, Béatrice followed her with her gaze and watched as she took a big handfull of everything Béatrice had provided. She smiled at the eagerness of the young girl and made some more room for her to choose her herbs.

It didn't take long till the first one had a question, a poor Ravenclaw that apparently had trouble to keep her wax hot enough. Another one followed, and even a little accident happened when a Hufflepuff fell into her classroom: all within a few minutes. Béatrice could already feel her knees starting to ache and longed for a seat. Just as she thought she had some time to rest, she was needed again. One student after another needed her attention and felt both honoured to have all their interest, but also growingly impatient. It was especially peculiar once a Slytherin approached her that appeared rather jittery to her. A lot of words left his mouth seemingly at the same time, it was almost too much for Béatrice ears.

Once he was settled, she finally had some time to look around and watch the other students, that had started to work on their candles. She then noticed someone on her right, being occupied with reading a book. Is she bored? Béatrice thought and made her way to the Gryffindor. Once she was at her place, Béatrice looked for any signs of failure or reasons why the girl would not work on her candle.

"What's the matter, dear? Don't know where to start? Why don't just choose some herbs first you want to add to your candles?" She hoped she would pique her interest. Other than that she was very much comfortable to just allow her to read, should she not have fun with the task.

A Room of Fire Finished
It didn't take long before Victoria realized that the teacher had made her way over to her and was giving her pointers. Slipping the book back into her bag, she smiled up at the teacher, listening to the questions she was being asked.

"Oh, yes," she began, nodding as she spoke. "I wasn't sure where to begin, but picking herbs sounds good." To be completely honest, she hadn't originally noticed that there were herbs that she could choose from. Looking over at the table, she now noticed that there were dozens of different herbs to choose from. In fact, as she studied the table full of different colors and textures, she wondered how she was so oblivious to it in the first place. Immediately, she remembered that it was the massive amount of candles around her that had been the distraction, rather than the table that was now so obvious. No matter, now was her chance to pick out her herbs and begin making another gorgeous candle for the room that seemingly couldn't handle another.

"Is there a certain method to picking herbs?" she wondered aloud before she would make her way to the table. She turned her attention back to her teacher. "Should I just pick what I like the looks of? Should I pick based on smell? Do different herbs do different things for the candle?" She realized she was asking a lot of questions and perhaps making this simple task a lot more difficult than it should be. Victoria was completely oblivious to the fact that this was supposed to just be a simple and fun task rather than a complicated assignment.

A Room of Fire Finished
Forcing herself to just relax a little bit and enjoy the task at hand, Victoria began to methodically pick out the herbs that she wanted to make her candle with. Picking up a handful of green sage, she carefully smelled the herb, weighing the scent in her hand as she decided whether she wanted to use it or not. Perhaps something a little more fragrant would do better. Moving down the table she found a beautiful purple herb and brought this one up to her nose. Ah lavender. Yes, this was certainly the herb that she would go with. Pulling a handful of the flowery, light purple herbs off the table, she made a last minute decision to go back to the further end of the table and mix sage in as well. Finally having the herbs that she needed, she skipped back to her fireplace, ready to get to work.

Sitting down of the stone closest to the fireplace, she set her herbs down beside her on another stone. Thinking for a moment, she debated what the best way to do this would be. As she looked around the room at what other students were doing, she got an idea. Victoria took the herbs that she had brought over from the table and wrapped them into a bundle using one of the pieces of lavender. When she was satisfied that the bundle would stay together, she began dipping it into the wax of a cauldron that she had found hanging in front of her fireplace. As she dipped the herbs down into the wax, she found the she dipped too far, accidently inserting two of her fingers into the sticky substance. Initially gasping at the heat, she soon realized that the wax wasn’t too hot but was rather soothing to the touch. Rubbing her fingers together, she pulled the wax off, tossing it back into the cauldron to melt again with the rest of the wax.

Pulling the herbs back up out of the wax, she wiped the excess wax from them and then dipped them back down again to cover her soon to be candle. After a few more times of dipping in and out of the wax, the candle began to take its shape, the herbs hidden deep within the wax. It began to concern the red head that the herbs were no longer visible, and she hoped that as the candle was burning, the smell of the lavender and the sage would be present. Taking her time to finish the candle and get it right, she dipped it down into the hot wax one last time, bringing it back up into the cool air and inspected it. As she inspected it, she once again pulled off the excess wax, shaping it in the most perfect candle she could prepare.

Satisfied with her efforts, the girl smiled at her creation, admiring the work that she had done. Careful to put away extras of ingredients where she had originally found them, Victoria picked up her bag and her candle and headed towards the Professor. “Here you go,” the girl smiled, handing the professor her newly created candle. “It’s lavender with a touch of sage. I hope you like it!”
