Failure of innocence PV Finished

@Alaric Equinox

Kaegen had a plan. And oh, what a wonderful plan it was. It made his twisted little heart spring with what he could only equate with joy. No longer would he not be a superpower. Hogwarts would learn to fear him. He would no longer have to feel the pangs of fear that followed him everywhere. If he was strong enough, he wouldn't have to worry about the shadows on the wall. He could be free, he could be safe. And all he needed was more power. All he needed was more power, and hate.

Hate to keep him moving forwards, hate to get him out of bed in the morning and hate to force himself to sleep at night. Hate to keep his mouth chewing and hate to make him hand in his lessons. The little boy was anything but normal, he was about as similar to the other students as a wolf in a flock of sheep. His hate blasted off of him in ice cold waves, shadows huddled around him, as if for safety, lashing out like dark tentacles on the floor and walls, dimly lit by torches that flickered and faded as he passed them by.

Many students had concluded that there was no way he was a half-vampire, based solely on the fact that he was far too terrifying. There were a few other half vampires in the school, and none of them were comparable to the sheer waves of murderous intent that emanated from this boy. They had heard stories, tales and legends of what he had done, and labelled him a monster, the monster of hogwarts. The castle was practically empty for him, it wasn't hard to sense him coming, and so the students made sure they were never there when he was. It was an arrangement he appreciated.

But now he had to gather supplies, now he had to venture forth and complete his newest project, and there was no way he was going to pull it off without the help of a professor. His tired eyes narrowed, as he began to climb the stairs to the astronomy tower. He hated stairs. The boy's skin was stark white with a sickly tinge of grey, reminding some of a sickly wonton wrapper. His hair was a knotted, pitch black mess, darker than the fraying, faded robe he wore.

His eyes were a stormy dark grey with rings of bright red that circled his pupils, eclipses that glowed and burned with a cold fury. His long spidery fingers peeked out from the too-large sleeves, dirty nails closely resembling the dark shadows that lay under his eyes, haunting reminders of far too many nights spent wide awake.

Anyone in the professors office would first feel a chill in the air, and then a feeling of foreboding, of fear (unless said prof has the fearless ability, ofc) that would ultimately vanish as soon as it had arrived. Kaegen stopped right outside the door to the office room, and started taking deep breaths. He had to appear normal. His hand reached up to scratch at the scar tissue around his neck, further irritating the skin. The side of the neck was the only part of his body with any color at all, and even then it was a tiny little bit of pink.

It had taken him 2 minutes to calm down, to take away his castle walls of fear and lower his shield of hate. It took him a further minute to make sure he was still in control. His hate kept him focused, without it he was much more unstable, and he knew it. Raising a hand, Kaegen knocked on the door, and waited.

And we might possibly be getting someone else popping in later, just a headsup. I'm not sure if they're still interested in joining tho

This was a rare day when Alaric was actually in his office as when he had made his way up to the classroom he had found that the sun was just too bright for him. Not bright enough to harm him but bright enough to be a general annoyance, then again that was the risk he took when he made the walls of the inside classroom invisible. Could he simply make them visible? Sure, but redrawing their perimeters was a pain and he didn’t feel like doing it over and over just because the sun was doing what it did on a daily basis. So in spite of the sun, he would gather up the homework he needed to grade and head a couple of floors down to the actual office that he really didn’t’ like being in.

It was small, drab, and stuffy and it reminded Alaric more of being a the dungeons than being inside or a tower. He tried to spiff it up a little bit with a desk made out of rosewood, although not as ornate as the desk he kept upstairs. On his desk beside his quill, inkwell, and homework was two bowls one full of bloodpops and the other sherbet lemons. Although he himself drank ministry provided blood when students weren’t around he wanted to make sure that he always had pops on hand for his students who were much like himself. For those that were not he wished to give them an option as well, fair was fair. Shelves behind him from floor to ceiling contained parchment scrolls of constellations and other star charts, because of all of the parchment it was all his office smelled like.

He looked over the current piece of homework in front of him and frowned it was like that particular student had not even tried. Did the students think astronomy would be an easy pass class? They would find themselves most certainly mistaken. As Kae ascended the stairs Alaric would feel nothing he had learned at a very young age to conquer his fears and not let anything bother him. Years of being bullied and tortured in the sun by some of his classmates taught him to toughen up. Eventually, they were the ones who were afraid of him and left him alone, which was all he had truly wanted in the first place. The only thing he had changed about his appearance was making sure his complexion was actually a milky white and not the corpse-like appearance that all Dhampirs were cursed with. He didn’t judge his fellows in the least, only himself, so he paid a lot of money for the best cover-up and sealer and painstakingly applied it every day to the parts of him that showed outside of his clothes.

He was taken aback when a knock reverberated through his door and it almost took him a second to realize that, yes, someone was knocking on his office door. “Come in” His warm, velvet voice called out as he flipped the papers over on his desk so their contents could not be seen. Clasping his hands on his desk he trained his dark, vermillion eyes on the door wondering who was calling upon him.

Something was wrong. Kaegen slid open the door, and stared at the professor. A fool, a dangerous, terrifying fool. The little ravenclaw's heart threatened to speed up too fast, but he took a deep breath, and stared holes in the floor. Stay calm, be ready. Just speak to him, get what you need and leave. Don't think about what he is, what he's done. He's just a taller person, just a bag of meat, just a fleshy, delicious, dangerous, terrifying professor.

He couldn't rely on hatred, he was trying to keep a low profile, to move about and get what he needed from the professor. In case of mind reading, he tried to block out as many thoughts as possible, although it made it look like he was either severely focusing on something or about to cry.

"I need a tube. And a tripod. School..."

He was being even quieter than he usually was, and his head refused to work right. It kept thinking of things that he didn't want to think of, focusing on worrisome things like death and blood and the shadows that he could use to escape.

"About 3 inch diameter. Please."

Kaegen's spidery fingers shrunk upwards to hide in his sleeves. He needed to get what he wanted and then leave, go far away from this cursed place.

Alaric’s dark vermillion eyes focused on the boy’s skin tone a boy like him? He was not completely sure, but he also typically had great instincts about people. He tried to peg down what was going on with him, was he just deep in thought or was he upset. This child was hard to read, and it was then that he spoke. Seemingly asking for a tube and a tripod. The boy was quiet, and it brought a look of concern to his face.

“Might I ask what you would like these items for Mr…?” He was polite his voice curious as he asked his question. He was interested to see how this student would respond to his inquiry would he get a sarcastic no spit at him like venom? Would the response be a timid I’d rather not? Or would he manage to get some truth out of the child? He seemed to doubt the latter normally people who acted like this when asking for something was not necessarily going to be truthful about why they wanted.

If this was something for school surly it could be granted by the professor of who’s class it was that he needed it for. If it was not for school work he wanted to know exactly what it was going to be for because giving out equipment was not something he was going to do for just any student.

Polite and soft, of course he was polite and soft, all the professors always were. It was like clockwork with them, always professional, never real, or feeling. They existed to cause harm, to teach their students how to avoid the very harm that the professors brought about, just to see who would survive. Kaegen's spidery hand reflexively moved up to scratch at the scars on the side of his exposed neck. Scarfless. He felt naked and cold, especially now that he was face to face with a professor.

Kaegen didn't remember the professor's name, he was too generic to be of much note. Soft spoken, referring to his students as mister and miss and pretending to care about things. His physical appearance may have been slightly different, but Kaegen wasn't even sure about that. What had the previous professor looked like? The color orange came to mind, but he had already spent too much time worrying. He had to act, to get what he needed.

"I know you don't care, and I know magic comes easily to you. I'm just a face moving through, I would very much rather you just magic me a pipe and tripod than actually pretend to be interested. You don't belong in this world, you have your own, and the veil between the two is too thick to be pierced by general conversation. I ask nothing more than 3 minutes of your time, and the energy it takes you to wave your wand twice, and say two to four words."

He wanted to get out, he didn't like this man, didn't like how seamlessly he blended in with the other professors. Kaegen tried to focus on something nice, but found nothing. He wanted to climb back into hate's comforting blaze, but he knew he couldn't. As soon as he did that, the professor would know, would be able to see the shadows snake around the boy, would be able to see the lights flicker, feel the temperature drop. He would have to clutch fear, and determination, and pray that this would be over soon.

Alaric scrutinized the boy in front of him refusing to give him a name and going out of his way to make presumptions. Alaric was not used to such demands made of him by children especially demands that edged on hostility. His pupils dilated reducing the dark vermilion to a thin ring around the abysmal black pools. He would choose his next words carefully as he was still a professor in this school. “No.” It was simple and resolute before he continued.

“It’s ironic that you would think Dhampirs are so keen to magic.” He was very much calling himself out right now. He knew his magic proficiency was not the best it was one of the other reasons that he taught a subject that required very little to no magic. He was not like the other professors he still was required to speak incantations and use his wand. “Do you really presume to think you can waltz into my office and make demands of me? Is it because I am new? Or is it because we are the same race? You will get no special treatment for either account.” He had levied an intense stare at the young boy, and it would be quite clear he was not going to give in. If there was one thing Alaric was good at it was recognizing his own kind. He had spent a long time trying to find people like him.

This would not due either a standoff between an adult Dhampir and a child Dhampir. Alaric remembered being in this boy’s situation, but at the same time, he knew very well he couldn’t give in to these demands. Once you invite that in it becomes expected and you become far more susceptible to it. This boy could try to use everything he had against him but he would find himself coming up far shorter than he intended.

Kaegen's eyes narrowed. He had already lost, it was a pity, but irrelevant. He could find someone else to provide him with what he needed. This professor clearly wanted to make Kaegen's continued survival far more difficult. That was fine. He initially didn't understand what the professor was talking about. Dhampir taking naturally to magic? Was the professor half vampire? How would you even tell? He chose to keep his mouth shut for this first remark, sullenly listening to the older man rant about how he wouldn't listen to demands.

"A crumb to a mouse is gold. You and I share nothing, not race, not worlds. Your presence in this place will fade like the presence of those before you. I suppose it was naive of me to expect help from an enemy."

He hated this, he hated the man in front of him, he hated this school. He hated how he was alone, he hated how he couldn't talk well, he hated how small he was, he hated his own weakness, his pain. And that burst forth, it burst forth in tangled shadows, writhing and lashing in some unseeable agony by his feet. It was a tangible pulse of cold that shot forth from the frail corpse like frame. Fearless though the professor might be, he would still feel the temperature drop.

He would still see the ring of red that circled the little ravenclaw's eyes suddenly start to glow with hardly concealed malice. He would see the torches on the wall flutter in fear, see the light levels drop noticeably.

"A choice has been made, a line's been crossed
A log into the rapid's been tossed.
Not soon forgotten, on either side
Through famine or plenty, fate won't be defied."

A horrible grin cracked the little ravenclaw's face as he turned to leave the room. He was tired, and getting rejected hurt. He was too tired, his nerves were much too thin, and the hunger was roaring like a fire inside his mind. As soon as he left, assuming he wasn't stopped, the room would return to it's normal self, torches crackling merrily with no recollection of the little boy who had made them flicker so frightfully only moments before.
