Lesson in Ignorance
@Aurelia Valentine
Speech
"It's hardly fair to call someone a bad host, considering they never intended to host," He began, gesturing around himself, pointing out how isolated the area of the library they sat in was. "I sat over here so I could sit alone, and you chose to sit opposite me, I would not describe any of this as 'hosting'." He continued, leaning back to relax into his seat, firmly believing if one of them was to leave this corner, it would not be him. He'd arrived first, and he certainly intended to leave last, though he was certain that he had made that much clear already.
Edwin had grown up never getting anything but his way, so having someone push back against him, even if wasn't on some grand scale, and only really a difference of opinions, but the experience was a fresh one however trivial it may be.
Whilst he hadn't intended to offend with his name calling, more providing an honest assessment of how the girl came across, her lack of reaction was disappointing regardless. Her fake distress elicited no reaction from the Gryffindor, staring at her performance with a blank face. When her fake sadness finally concluded, he asked simply. "Are you done with all that, now? You'll get more people to come over here if you continue like that." More people wandering over would be disappointing for number of reasons, him appearing as a bully if people were to buy her performance, or worse, joining them in this corner.
A shift in Edwin's mood came from her explanation of her upbringing, perhaps for the first time her words not frustrating Edwin, but instead genuinely intriguing him, as well as causing the corners of his lips to turn upwards slightly, betraying that he found the image of her screaming at some professor to be actually amusing. It did, however, momentarily stump him, unsure of whether she should be pitied for being raised away from magic, or some other sentiment.
"That's interesting," He eventually began, a tone of uncertainty to his words. "Were your parents hoping you were a squib, or something? I can't imagine why you'd be willingly raised away from magic, considering how convenient it is. I mean, sure, there are them technology stuffs but magic is free. I've seen the prices of some of them things, and those are not cheap, I'll tell you that much." Whilst the words were maybe insensitive, there was no malice to his tone, only a genuine curiosity and ignorance.
"They don't need to approach werewolves whilst they are transformed to gather the information, there are werewolves, at least I assume there would be, who would willingly share information with those who approach them. After all, why would werewolves want to risk misinformation being published? Sure, werewolves likely would be uncooperative with the ministry, as you say, but that doesn't meet they wouldn't cooperate with other wizards. Besides, the rest of your point isn't entirely accurate, is it? To say the ministry didn't let them prove themselves is false, considering how much of the anti-werewolf discrimination was repealed following the Battle of Hogwarts back in the day. That wouldn't be ministry discrimination anymore, that's just discrimination by the public."
On another day, perhaps they would be able to see eye to eye, give a little bit on the argument in either day, but given how they had met, Edwin was very much unwilling to budge from his stance on this particular day.
"My parents told me stuff, sure, but I don't think anything that isn't public." He explained. "I want to read about it, because the article will likely include statements, probably from SCAR themselves, the people rumoured to be behind it."
Edwin simply shook his head at her continued attempt to explain, and justify werewolf behaviour. "Blaming children that are sneaking out and anything along those lines is stupid, why is a werewolf allowing themself to freely turn whilst around anything resembling civilisation? Hunters, sure, that makes sense, but making any justifications as to why kids are, and could be turned is a weak argument. If you were a werewolf who lived near a town, and you knew there were children in that town, would you allow yourself to turn without locking yourself in a basement, locking yourself to something, trapping yourself in some manner?"
Edwin scoffed, and waved off the comments about owls being intercepted, opting not to point out how unlikely that was. Dozens, and dozens of owls arrived to Hogwarts each day, the odds of just the right one being intercepted was next to zero.
"Stories will be embellished for the sake of retelling, sure, but at the core the story will have been the same. Those stories all have similar events, and that is werewolves who haven't properly looked after themselves, knowingly endangering the public." He nodded at part of the rest of her assessment. "Of course they don't want to be werewolves, who would? But the core point that I've made throughout all of this is that so many werewolves don't take the right steps to prevent them attacking people."

❝GOING ROUND 'N ROUND IN CIRCLES❞ |
| ?????????? |
𝐄 dwin Westbridge is right, of course - he never intended to host. In fact, when Aurelia Valentine arrived at her favourite spot, someone is already occupying it, and that was him. Completely deluded about - in her opinion - her rights on the spot, the young badger started riling him in order for him to leave. Appear as unbearable as she could potentially be. Which, of course, did not happen. His stubbornness actually rivalled hers; tricks recorded in her book came out completely useless. A frustrated sigh escaped her lips, her eye twitching from overwhelming irritation. There is a charm in this specific spot. Just beside this desk, there is a large arched window decorating the wall, enabling one to overlook the Hogwarts Grounds. One could watch squirrels stuffing their food in one of the tree cavities during autumn; watch other students perform pranks or them utilising banned prank products bought from Weasley's Wizard Wheezes; or even watch staff patrolling and issuing detention left and right. One point that should be considered is: from this angle, one could observe students and their activity in the Hogwarts Library, whether they stash books from the shelves or are returning them, or actively crying from the homework piling. This spot enabled Aurelia Valentine to observe every angle possible this position provided. There is a desire buried in her old soul to never participate in the outer and inner workings of society, something she is unaware of yet. If only her job in this world is for her deep brown eyes to scour the surroundings and absent-mindedly registering information without any consequences possible; her delicate face buried within her Hufflepuff scarf as she peeked, or arms cushioning her head, her long, wispy curls splayed around the desk as she watched. It is difficult to mind her own business, especially when there is nothing to study about anymore. Aurelia never met Edwin before. This is the first time she met and saw him, she has no idea if he attended the same classes as her. It is a wonder if the young Gryffindor frequented the Library too, as if he did, she would have observed him before. That, or he usually settles on the floor above them or on the opposite side, where her vision blurs to comprehend house colours from afar. It is fascinating how a few minutes before, she never knew he existed. Just before the raven-haired badger registered the fact that he was sitting on her favourite spot. The age of technology, or Information Age, of course, proved convenient but expensive. Not everyone in the Muggle World has access to it. The initial payment for one to have it sometimes is insufficient, as keeping it well-maintained, plus utilisation of it even for a minute, is quite expensive. She agrees that magic is more convenient, the spells necessary to learn are almost free to acquire; it would be foolish to state that her workloads had not been lighter ever since she learnt that she is capable to wield a wand. “It is not a choice my Mother had at the time,” Aurelia simply answered, concluding the conversation about her upbringing. Someday, Edwin Westbridge would understand that people like him always repel the opportunity for werewolves to speak up about their situation in the highlands - or wherever they were cornered to inhabit, and the outcome of their participation in society. They are already painted as evil, as murderers, as blood-thirsy, as soon as they reveal the entirety of their being. Someday, the young Gryffindor would understand that better access to Wolfsbane Potion would create a significant decrease in werewolf attacks each year - that locking and trapping themselves in some basement would be inherently unnecessary. “We keep going in circles,” Aurelia begun, her face relaxed in surrender as her gaze shifted the to books littering her side of the desk. “How about we tolerate each other's company instead if no one is willing to leave the spot? Of course, it would be best if one of us left instead, then we do not have to pretend that we do not exist to each other's lives.” Focusing on her academic work and completely ignoring the entirety of the young Gryffindor's presence in front of her, she picked up her muggle ballpoint pen and started scribbling furiously on her parchment, the large array of which was still unrolled and collected underneath the large arched window. A thought swirls in her mind as she continued her work, if ever people like him always discourage someone to participate in the workings of society. Their discussion exhausted her desire to even advocate about the minority if people like him existed - too close-minded to consider and acknowledge. |
