Secrets in the Margins

----@Eldred Grayswell---@Quentin Harrington---------------Outfit------------------------- March 2nd, 2025
It took one week and a half for Linnéa to follow up Eldred on her offer to draw together in the library. Between classes and homework, she'd sent him an owl of course to let him know that she hadn't forgotten about him. Linnéa was looking forward to it, but there were more than one reason for that. Secretly, she was scrambling for excuses to avoid seeing Quentin. Not that anything bad had happened, she was just still recovering from the embarrassment that was the kissing party, still not sure how to behave around him after what had happened there. It hadn't passed her by the way he, and most of the guys there- all three- had looked at, and behaved around her housemate, Stelle.
Could she really blame them though? Linnéa could remember how she'd felt around the girl. Nervous, charmed, quite like she felt around people like Sebastian Drake, who was so attractive it felt unnatural. Still, something inside her had hurt that night, not sure what it was. It wasn't like Lin was someone who craved attention all the time- far from- but... she wished someone would someday look at her like that.
Either way, she was happy to hang out with Eldred, and maybe listen to his own love struggles. Way more successful than her own, anyway. She'd sent a final owl earlier that week, inviting him to meet at the library on Sunday. Bringing her old sketchpad and all the tools she would need for the day, she climbed up the stairs form the Hufflepuff common room and headed to the library. There were some students there, even on the weekend, but not her friend. Suppose it was quite early- she had no idea about the Gryffindors sleeping schedule. She was the first to arrive and quickly found a cozy little spot behind a few shelves that wasn't occupied already.
While she waited for him to show up, she arranged all her pencils and brushes on the table with a soft sigh. Her mind was still clouded, but hopefully this would take her mind off of things.

In record time, he arrived at the library after waking up. Due to the circumstances, he was wearing his usual Gryffindor uniform. It was a much more wrinkled on his arms than what‘ he considered comfortable, so he wore it rolled up to his elbows.
The polyester was missing, and the tie was messily tied around his white dress shirt‘s collar. In fact, Eldred had somehow managed to look on this Sunday as if he had been swapped place, with a more chaotic, evil twin brother. Unfortunately, there was no other way, as the student had overslept in a different student‘s bed and missed his alarm. Elsewise, he would have spent an extra hour getting ready properly.
He had assumed, from reading between the lines of the letter, that they were supposed to meet in the morning. So, he had rushed outside with uncombed hair, brushing his teeth quickly, dressing with the brush still in his mouth, and clamped the notebook under his arm to exit the Gryffindor Dormitory.
Eldred was slightly out of breath as he eventually entered the library and walked around students and shelves, searching for Linnéa. He took a deep breath of the dusty morning air and forced his heart to calm down from his sprint. His thoughts were still circling around the image from this morning—Sebastian Drake, sleeping like a rock under the duvet and Eldred's arm. Eldred could barely believe he cuddled up with him the day before!
The 12-year-old missed the presence of mind to fix his hair with the fingers. Normally, he‘d have done it while walking. The long, dark strands from the top of his head hung in his face, partially covering his eyebrows and eyes. They slightly curled to the left and upward, making him look just like his mother had originally intended: like a 'BadBoy‘. The young woman he called his mom had fallen in love with his dad back in first grade at Hogwarts. Before his old slytherin man became the most organized person on the planet, he had been a troublemaker with a trendy, cool haircut from first to third grade.
Eldred found it awful once his mom had finished cutting his hair. Hence he put a lot of effort into styling it out of his face daily, partly using a blow dryer, a brush, and magical hairspray to force it behind the ears and backwards!
With the lack of time and his mind scattered, focusing on everything but his own appearance, he found Linnéa after just a few minutes at an empty table.
Eldred forced his way by utilizing gap between two students to reach her. He sighed deeply, filling his lungs again to calm the loud beating heart.
"Linnéa, good morning" he greeted the Hufflepuff student. Her outfit made his mouth corners turn up, and he smiled warmly. Her light clothing suited her blonde hair. Just like last time, she appeared to him like a princess, peaceful and with clear, natural beauty. He wasn’t shy, and such a look deserved a compliment!
"You look incredibly pretty, the colors suit you exceptionally well" he added, placing his notebook from his arm on an empty spot on the table. There were already her materials on the plate. His gray eyes briefly wandered over them. She was much better prepared than he was - and the boy probably looked today just like the Gryffindor students his parents still criticized to this day: troublemaker with no sense of proper dressing routines.

Secrets in the Margins

----@Eldred Grayswell---@Quentin Harrington----------------------------------------
Linnéa didn't have to wait before her friend arrived, the urgency in his steps in the otherwise quiet library the first giveaway. "Good morning," she replied back, finishing up a note in her calendar before she glanced up at him, doing a double take by the sight. He looked so much more relaxed and disheveled than she remembered him in the courtyard, where he'd seemed very proper and poised. Now his tie was messy, sleeves pushed up to his elbows, and hair untamed. Not in a bad way either. Eldred looked good. Appeared to be glowing a bit, in fact.
"Thanks," she said, blushing a bit at the compliment that sounded way too casual for the words spoken, but she was more curious to hear about what he'd been up to. Was that last nights clothing? Or did he simply not have clothes that wasn't his uniform? That didn't sound plausible. Neither did any of the other indecent images that popped into her mind; The boy had seemed embarrassed by just hearing of just the kissing party, she couldn't imagine him doing anything worse.
"You seem to be in a good mood," Linnéa drawled, glancing up at him with a knowing smirk. Pausing to see if he would fill in the blanks or if she would have to drag the answers out of him. "That wouldn't have to do with the fact that you look like you stumbled out of bed in last nights outfit?"
Hopefully it wasn't the case that he simply didn't have other clothes! Merlin, that would have made her feel absolutely terrible.

Linnea was just finishing writing a note when Eldred sat down. He pulled up a chair and took a seat directly in front of his notebook. As he did, he noticed the growing redness in her face and couldn't help but feel pleased that she‘d accepted the compliment this well.
His own appearance was of little concern to him at the moment. The student sighed and tried to force his body into relaxation, but the tension in his limbs wouldn't ease. Hearing the comment about his cheerful looks, he was suprised!
In fact, he had feared he would come across as gloomy, like three days of rainy weather. Yet, in truth, he indeed couldn’t shake off the nervous happiness from the previous night.
Her question was close enough to what had happened to bring an embarrassed flush to his face. So much so for having control over his body! He probably used up all his battery of self-control yesterday night. Eldred pressed his lips tightly together but still couldn’t prevent his mouth from curling into a shy smile.
“Well...,” he began, and slid his chair closer to Linnéa. When he was right next to her, he leaned in slightly more, enough to allow them to whisper and to seem awfully close.
“I didn’t have much time to pick something out, I went to bed too late and overslept—but well, not my bed... I was in Sebastian Drake’s bed. We cuddled and talked...for who knows how long.”
He had to say it. Someone, anyone, the 12-year-old needed to confide in! Eldred could barely believe it himself that he'd slept in Sebastian Drake’s bed and held the boy in his arms. It had been such a warm and comfortable position. The desire to cuddle again came to his mind, causing his ears to redden.
“We’re friends now... but”—Merlin, it was hard to force the words out of his mouth—“but I think I like him... maybe...”
He sincerely hoped that she‘d take it well. After all, he knew she had been at the Kissing Party and must have seen Sebastian kiss many others. Eldred didn’t want to come across as someone who was superficially chasing after a ladies' man.

Secrets in the Margins

Cuddled in Sebastian Drakes bed? Linnéa gaped at Eldred, blinking in disbelief by the quick progression since their last talk. Sharing bed with anyone that wasn’t a close girl friend at a sleepover sounded so far away in her world, and for some reason it was surprising hearing that Eldred had allowed it to happen, maybe even pursued it himself. Distantly, she wondered if more than just cuddling had happened in bed. The way his ears turned red sealed it for her. His disarranged look suddenly made sense. Well... Good for him. When the gossip finally had sunk in, she had to stiffle giggles to not piss off the librarian.
"Wow! That explains it all," she said without judgement, but not completely without smugness. She had expected some gossip but not for it to be so juicy and unexpected. Eldred admitting to liking the other gryffindor casanova like that was the least surprising thing about all of this. "He is quite charming, isn't he." She mused tapping her pencil on her lips, considering the boy she'd met at the party but hadn't thought much about since. There was no reason to be hung up on criminally handsome players- the only kind of person that would host a party like that. Still, she could admit there was something about him she couldn't quite place.
"Honestly, I thought it was something off about him. Like he's too attractive and charming, if that makes sense? I'm happy for you though. Do you think... he likes you back? Or what do you want from this? Except cuddles." That in itself sounded pretty nice, but unfortunately she didn't know any hufflepuff girls that would sneak into her bed. Or boys, if that was even possible. Obviously not Quentin, he wasn’t even in her house. Her mind instantly drifted to that gorgeous girl, Stelle, and what it would be like to cuddle her. It was only delusional thinking, there was no proof that the girl even was into her! She'd seemed generally uninterested by all girls at the party. Hopefully he wouldn't be disappointed if Drake couldn't deliver.
While she listened to his response, she opened up a new page in the sketchbook and began to roughly draft the first thing that came to mind, in this case, a pair of tulips.
"Do you know what you want to draw today?" Linnéa asked eventually, beginning to pick out the colors she would need for her tulips. They didn't get very far anyway before they were interrupted. First she assumed it was the librarian who wanted to tell them to shut up, but she choked back at surprised sound when she saw that it was Quentin! "Quentin! Oh, hi." She said, a bit awkwardly. Not because they were 'caught', but because she hadn't been expecting, or ready, to see him today. They still hadn't talked since the party, where he'd been acting like kind of a jerk and lustful idiot. As was his right, she supposed, but it didn’t mean it hadn't hurt. And she still had no idea what to tell him. Telling him to not join them however, didn't feel right. Lin decided to suck it up, offering him a small smile.
"Yeah, that's fine if you want. We were just planning on drawing." Linnéa glanced at Eldred to see if he was okay with it aswell.

Eldred could hardly believe it himself, and now that the dam had broken and the first words had been reported, it kept pouring out. He found it so ridiculous that he could share her giggling. Snickering with one hand over his mouth, he grinned, though his eyes looked almost horrified.
“I can hardly believe it actually happened! By Merlin, I wanted to ask for help due to a dead flower, but he was lying there so insanely cute in bed, he thought I was attacking him and pulled me in, and then, well then–” Eldred took a deep breath. The giggling stopped, and he ran his fingers through his hair, embarrassed, pushing it back from his eyes.
“Then he started teasing me again, and I really didn't want to go through that again, him getting under my skin and me sitting in his bed, with a red face to make matters worse..! It was like a knee-jerk reaction, so I just… went along with it and said: yes, I came for cuddles...and …I might have called him sweetheart.”
He let his hair fall back down. It once again was wildly into his face, and the student glanced across the room for a moment. He sat properly in front of his sketchbook, placed his arms on the desk, and buried his face in his hands. What did he hope for from this? He didn’t even know! The feelings were confusing and strange—especially for a boy. This wasn’t right at all, what would his father say—congratulate him? Want to meet Sebastian? Both would be a complete embarrassment!
“I don’t know, maybe a friendship—a real one, not one of those superficial ones. He’s really cute, I mean… not just his face, but what I know about him…” Eldred tried to put his thoughts into words, but expressing feelings was harder than he thought, especially when it came to crushes and silly hearts!
The Gryffindor lifted his head, took a deep breath, and could almost feel how her words and presence helped him relax. The student opened the sketchbook, partly to distract himself. “If I know more, I’ll tell you...” It would be better to drop the topic for now, he figured. At least until he knows better.
“About the drawing…” Eldred took a pen and thought deeply. He let the pen tip rest loosely on the paper, wondering if it would be stupid to draw Sebastian in a pink pajama like a silly, lovesick guy. It would probably look like a weird jellyfish; with Eldred's lack of drawing skills! What else was there? Maybe something she was good at? His eyes briefly glanced at Linnéa.
“Hmm… maybe horses, like the ones you painted…”
Then he heard ‚Quentin‘. Eldred didn’t know what he had expected, but it wasn’t that someone would come by and walk directly up to them, now standing in their front. A sudden pale flush crossed his lips. With his head held higher, he looked at the brown-haired boy and only heard Linnéa’s reaction from the side.
It had been a while since he had made new acquaintances, but never on at a day when he looked like he'd been swapped with someone messy! The situation was so bizarre that he managed to produce a genuine smile - Amused by how ridiculous this first meeting was, he examined Quentin, pale but relaxed.
“Hey, nice to meet you... I’m Eldred,” he greeted the other boy, briefly letting his gray eyes scan him from top to bottom. He seemed friendly, though a bit odd for just approaching two random students like this. It was obvious that Eldred found the whole thing more interesting than uncomfortable.

Secrets in the Margins

Quentin stood in front of the two of them with an awkward smile forcefully plastered onto his face.
“Quentin! Oh, hi.”
Well… that wasn’t great. Her words were friendly enough, but the two of them knew each other well enough that the awkwardness was practically palpable. He was regretting his choice now. He shouldn’t have approached. This was weird. But it was too late now. He already had. Shit. “Yeah, that’s fine if you want. We were just planning on drawing.”
Her eyes shifted over to the boy beside her, probably making sure this was okay. Why was this so awkward? Things had never been like this between them before. Quentin turned to look at the boy before he set his things down. If he was bothered by Quentin’s sudden appearance, he didn’t see it. “Hey, nice to meet you… I’m Eldred.”
Quentin nodded, grinning back. Eldred’s smile seemed genuine and relaxed, not at all like Lin. He recognized the boy from classes, though they hadn’t directly interacted before. He didn’t give off the same sort of vibe as someone like Sebastian. The other Gryffindor definitely had that ‘fuckboy’ persona. Maybe not literally doing anything like that, but he definitely seemed out for attention. Quentin didn’t get that from Eldred, which was probably good. And they did have their sketchbooks out. Maybe they were actually just drawing. Had he been making a big deal out of nothing? Now that they had invited him to sit, or at least they hadn’t told him to go, Quentin started putting down all of his things. A loose quill slipped off the edge of the table and hit the floor with a clatter and Quentin accidentally smacked his head on the edge of the table in his hurry to grab it before the Librarian made another appearance. Ow. Placing it back on the table, he glanced at the others, rubbing his head absentmindedly. “Drawing you said?” He glanced at their notebooks. “Anything in particular? Or just for fun?” He knew that Linnéa liked to sketch, but he knew next to nothing about the Gryffindor boy. The open page in his notebook was blank as of yet. He glanced over at Lin. He didn’t want to just come out and ask her what was wrong. At least not in front of Eldred. He didn’t want to embarrass her after all. But it was obvious that something had happened. He would have to wait and see if he got the chance to clear the air. Until then, well, they would just have to wade through the awkwardness. He pulled out his transfiguration, glancing sheepishly towards Eldred. “Sorted into Ravenclaw but still struggling in this class. How embarrassing is that?” In truth, his muggle upbringing was probably hindering him with this. He’d only known that magic existed for a handful of months after all. “Honestly, without Lin I’d probably be in pretty rough shape. I think we have a future prefect on our hands.”

Secrets in the Margins

It was quite sweet how Eldred was talking about Sebastian and the night that had unfolded. She supposed neither of them knew what the other Gryffindor thought about it, but to her- and to Eldred probably, it sounded like it had been a mutually nice and vulnerable moment. Linnéa sighed with a dreamy quality, her pencil stilling in her hand. Lin was a bit of a hopeless romantic, wasn’t she? Just lacking the actual romantic experience to back it up. ”That does sound like a dream.” She told him with a smile, albeit a tiny bit envious. Lin tired not to dwell on it, her time would come… Someday.
After a conclusion that he most of all hoped for genuine friendship even if it didn’t lead to anything more, which she thought would be kind of a let down, Eldred eventually decided that he wanted to try to draw a horse. Linnéa nodded; it was one of her specialities, after all.
Before she could discuss the topic further, Quentin had approached already. Since her friend seemed okay with him joining- obviously clueless to what had happened the other day- Quentin did sit down beside them, albeit stiffly. If it was because she had essentially avoided him ever since, or because her feeling was written all over her face, she wasn’t sure. Either way, the awkwardness was clearly not just her. Quentin put down his study materials on the table, giving the indication that he hadn’t just planned on sitting here watching them, or to talk about the party. Linnéa didn’t know if she was relieved or disappointed that he still had no idea, but it eased the tension a bit.
”Yeah, we were planning on it. Got a bit carried away talking about pretty boys though.” Or more accurately, a pretty boy. Linnéa smirked in Eldred direction, but at least didn’t out exactly who they were talking about. ”Horses, I think,” she remembered the topic before he’d interrupted.
The two boys started talking about Quentin struggling with transfiguration, and she listened idly. She didn’t care to mention that she found the class alright and had even managed to get good marks in all her classes this far. Maybe it was different from her, coming from a magical family. It would just be bragging to mention it, that was not really her style. Then she heard her being mentioned in the conversation, in a good way, and she stiffed a bit, biting her lip. Her, prefect? Admittedly, that was one of her goals.
”That would nice, but who knows how well I’ll be performing in four years from now!” Of course she would always do her best, but she didn’t want to get her hopes up. "I think you getting into the Quidditch team next year would be more likely." Linnéa knew Quentin was a bit obsessed with the sport, ever since she'd shown him it. Her interest was next to none, but it was such an iconic part of wizard culture, there was no way she couldn't have mentioned it once.

Secrets in the Margins

Eldred thought for a moment as Quentin nodded, his face twisting into a grin, wondering if he recognized the other boy from somewhere. The features didn’t match anyone he had consciously noticed, but the first-year student body wasn’t particularly large either. They were likely in one or two of the same classes, in which Eldred had never taken the time to scan the room. He could imagine it was either Herbology or Astronomy. In both subjects, Eldred was only half-present. He simply despised Herbology, and while he loved Astronomy, the late hours had left him sleepdrunk.
Watching Quentin, Eldred noted that he was carrying more supplies than the Gryffindor. This was not surprising; after all, Eldred had rushed in a sleepy haze into the library this morning. The sudden sound of Quentin's head hitting the edge of the table all of sudden, sent shivers down Eldred's back and his face to grimace. It sounded painful, and a trace of concern crossed his gray eyes as Quentin got up and rubbed his head. Eldred felt a great sense of relief when the other boy continued talking instead of crying or curling up in misery on the table.
At Quentin's question, he immediately heard Linnéa's succinct explanation. His gaze turned to the side, and a grateful smile briefly crossed his lips. Indeed, he was very glad that Linnéa hadn’t revealed the entire truth – or rather, almost none of it. After all, he had only confided in her because he trusted her ability to keep secrets as discreetly as possible.
To elaborate on the blonde's words, he turned back to Quentin and smiled at him calmly. "I want to practice; Linnéa draws exceptionally well, so I thought she might teach me a bit."
With Eldred’s full attention on Quentin, he couldn't help but display his surprise at what Quentin said next—not even out of politeness!
Quentin was in Ravenclaw? Until now, Eldred hadn’t known anyone from the house of clever, individualistic minds at Hogwarts. This information, despite his desire to remain neutral, sparked a hint of negative judgment in his mind. If Quentin kept bumping his head, maybe he’d have to switch houses..!
The fleeting thought stirred a guilty feeling into his stomach almost immediately.
He couldn’t understand the problem with Transfiguration. Thus Eldred raised an eyebrow critically before commenting, “You shouldn’t be ashamed of something like that. Everyone has subjects they struggle with. You wouldn’t look down on a Gryffindor who's bad at DADA, right? That would be pretty mean...” to emphasize his genuinely positive meant statement, he smiled briefly and winked with his left eye.
To the remark about Linnéa becoming a Prefect, Eldred grinned immediately. If one thing was true, it was that statement. He turned his head to her and could see right away that she wasn’t opposed to it! And Quentin on the Quidditch team? Eldred’s gaze darted back to the other boy. He scanned him from bottom to top and rested his chin on his hand, elbow on the table. A dreamy expression formed on his face.
The idea that both of them had a bright future ahead was too good to be true. At least one thing seemed to be going well. “I’m rooting for both of you. Also, Linnéa—” his gray eyes shifted to the side, focusing on the pretty girl. “You don’t need good grades to be a Prefect. You just need to be trustworthy... and you are.” He refrained from sharing his thoughts about his own future. Focusing on himself would have felt impolite and selfish.

Secrets in the Margins

Quentin blinked when Linnéa mentioned that both her and Eldred had been talking about ‘pretty boys’. Though she kept the comment to just that and continued on to talk about what they were drawing. He hoped that his little hiccup wasn’t noticeable, and luckily, nothing was said on the issue, with Eldred mentioning that Lin drew ‘exceptionally well’ and that he was wanting to perhaps get some tips from her. His eyes flickered over to Gryffindor boy, sizing him up a bit. He was still interested in this ‘pretty’ boy that they might have been talking about. He was also wondering if this meant that Eldred was only interested in boys as well.
He was appreciative of Eldred trying to reassure him about his struggles with Transfiguration, though when the boy mentioned something about a “Gryffindor who’s bad at DADA”, Quentin just grinned. From context he assumed that there must be some sort of connection there, but he wasn’t sure what it was. Maybe he would ask Linnéa later. Well, if he could find her again. He tried to bring her back into the conversation, with the Prefect comment, but he frowned when she stiffened as he said her name. Were things between them seriously that bad now? As usual, she tried to play off any compliments, instead deflecting it back towards him with a comment about the quidditch team. Despite things, Quentin found himself grinning at the mention of the sport. That was one thing he’d been worried about, when coming to Hogwarts, that it would be all studies and nothing fun. But quidditch was incredible! It was kind of like football, really, with a few extra concepts and a lot less rules. And it was on brooms in the air. He’d never imagined they would have something as thrilling as that. And he was obsessed. “That would be a dream,” he said in response. Though he’d barely been on a broom at this point.
Eldred was looking at him, resting his chin on his hand, and Quentin thought he might say something to burst his bubble. Something about the percentage of muggleborns making the house teams being much lower or something. Which were all things that Quentin had wondered and worried about. But instead, Eldred surprised him a bit by saying that he was rooting for him. Well… ‘them’. Before he went on to give Lin another compliment. One about being ‘trustworthy’. Quentin glanced between them, feeling like there was something more in that comment, but perhaps it wasn’t meant for him? So instead of questioning it, he just nodded, smiling at Linnéa. Things might be weird between the two of them, but he agreed completely with the Gryffindor’s words. Turning back to Eldred, Quentin nodded. “Thanks, Eldred. That’s really cool of you. But what about you? Any aspirations for school? Prefect? Head Boy? Or are you perhaps exceptional on the pitch? Or a master dueler? What's in your future?”
