23 December 2024, Before the Train Leaves

Colin was ecstatic! He'd sent an owl to AngelFyre to meet him up at the stone outcropping. He had made something special for her and wanted to surprise her! He knew she'd be boarding the train soon bound for Muggledom and all the strangeness of that place, so he'd made a wreath for her to take home, and a Christmas card. He'd been planning the surprise for a while. He laid the wreath and card out on the stone outcropping. Fyre was sure to see it there, but! She wouldn't find Colin. At least not right away!

He found a nice spot a little distance away. There was a dense thicket there, dead herbs and stalks of wildflowers. Colin crouched down there and waited. From here he could see the wreath and would soon find AngelFyre herself wondering at the mystery. He was going to levitate the wreath up and --- he smirked --- dangle it just out of reach! And then he was going to drop it on her head! He could imagine her voice calling for him, bapping him in response to his little prank!

Colin laughed merrily, slapping his hands over his mouth. He didn't want to give himself away before the surprise could be delivered! He wiggled his bare toes in cool earth. He'd also made a special wreath for Clair. Colin sighed. She would just have to wait and find that hanging on Ravenclaw door when she came back to Hogwarts in January! He reckoned she would spend a nice Christmas with her sisters --- and those dratted goats! He frowned slightly at the memory of that especially dratted old goat Cinnamon, the one who had led him on a chase when he visited Clair's farm!

He reverie was broken by a gentle sound, soft feathers rustling. One of the school owls alit nearby with an envelops strapped to its leg. Colin reached into his pocket for an owl treat and retrieved the letter. A faint hint of apples and ink and crisp air greeted Colin's sensitive nose as turned the envelope over. He knew right away it was from Clair. His heart thumped and his eyes widened! Maybe he'd race AngelFyre down to Hogsmeade Station and give the girl a proper kiss for a send-off!

He tore open the envelope, eager to read what his sweet heart had to say! He stood up without even realising it, stepping away from the thicket. It wasn't a terribly long letter, and Colin wondered if it might be some kind of prank. But ...

His eyes scanned over the few lines over and over.

The tears welled up in his eyes and he stood under the grey overcast, his heart suddenly as cold and bleak as the day around him. His hands shivered as the tears dropped onto the parchment. There were no words of a happy Christmas on the farm or a happier return to Hogwarts in a fortnight. No talk of what they might do when she got back or any of the usual stuff.

No.

Colin turned the parchment over.

There must have been a mistake!

There must be more to the letter than just ---

--- goodbye Colin.

23 December -- early morning

She had planned to give Colin the ornament she painted for him at the first of the month much sooner than today, but the month got away from her. This was a particularly busy time of the year at Hogwarts with all of the holiday festivities and celebrations taking place, not to mention the added pressures of finals and projects coming due sooner than most everyone would like, but she managed to get through it all, with her sanity in tact.

Colin had suggested they have their gift exchange up at the outcropping, and that suited AngelFyre just fine. She had packed the evening before so there would be no rush to get to the train. She was looking forward to spending time with Colin there, especially since this time it would be a joyous occasion for them. So many of their hurts and secrets and sorrows had been shared in that place, as had their exchanges on faith and philosophy, but when AngelFyre started to think about it on her way to meet him, it struck her that no celebration of any sort had ever transpired between them up there. Her friend was a wise one to have chosen today to change that.

As she hurried towards the base of the rocky path, Arc flew over and ahead of her, occasionally flying circles around her. He would eventually perch in his favorite tree, about 200 meters away from where she would be, listening and watching for prey. She would send him off to Stenton Village from the outcropping with a letter for home when she and Colin were about to leave. She had tried to cage him once, at the end of her third year before heading home for summer break, but he was a stubborn owl and refused to enter the cage. Even meaty tidbits did not entice him to enter. She had, of course, enchanted the cage with the same spell that enlarged the interior of her satchel and Simon's Majesto 500 tent, but she was not certain if Archimedes recognized that fact or not. To her, from the outside, it looked exactly like a regular cage, just big enough to contain him, but with no room to spread his wings. Perhaps it looked the same to Arc, and being "jailed" was not something he particularly wanted to be, so she would respect that. She had seen other students crate their owls, and thought it might give him a bit of a respite from flying all that way, but flying free is what he knew and what he wanted to be able to do, so she did not press him on it.

She heard him screech and looked up to see another owl flying with speed and purpose towards the outcropping, a message clearly tethered to its leg. That told her immediately that Colin was already there. She smiled and hurried up to the top. The first thing she saw was a lovely wreath with red berries and a note lying next to it. "Oh, how beautiful!" she gushed as she moved closer to it, delight dancing in her eyes. She had expected to see Colin before anything else, and was turning to see where he was while asking teasingly, "Is it a McCoire Christmas tradition to hide when offering your gift or is that a Pure-blood custom? "Come out! Come out, wherever you are, Woofy!" she giggled. "I want to wish you a proper Happy Christm-...." but she did not finish her salutation.

Standing a little behind her and off to the side, in a thicket, was Colin. He was holding the letter that the owl had just delivered to him, and his hands were shaking. He turned the letter over a couple of times, as if confused, and AngelFyre wondered if, for the first time ever, an owl had misdelivered its post.

She took a few steps towards him and was not certain he even knew she was there. There was no indication he had heard any of what she had said, not that any of it was earth shatteringly important, but when she saw a tear fall from his cheek, she closed the breach between them in an instant. Once she drew near enough, she placed a hand on his shoulder, squeezing it gently. Questions and concerns were multiplying by the second, but she kept it simple.

She pulled him back to the now with one word, but it was steeped in some of those very questions and concerns she held as her eyes locked onto him as if emitting invisible tractor beams.

"Woofy?"

The tears flowed down Colin's cheeks. He stood alone. Truly alone in his heart. Some part of him was aware that another person was present. His brain registered AngelFyre's scent and presence. But Colin's mind was elsewhere. Lost somewhere between Scotland and America. His heart was torn open by unknown persons and for unfathomable reasons.

How could this even be happening?

He felt a hand on his shoulder. Warm and strong. And more importantly, here. Now. A part of him rebelled against the touch. In the moment, he didn't even know what he was doing. With a snarl he broke from AngelFyre's touch. His teeth were bared and his nose crinkled. His green eyes flashed with anger.

Yes, anger. But on recognising who they glared at, their ire subsided. All that was left was the hurt. Colin thrust the letter at AngelFyre. "What's bloody in America?" he shouted hoarsely. "They---They took her away!" he cried out between whimpers. "She doesn't belong there!" Colin whispered softly. His legs could no longer bear him and he collapsed to the ground, sobbing. He desperately wished that he hadn't shrugged his friend's hand away. He desperately needed her to center him again.

The letter fell from his hand, teased by the chill winter breeze. "Eyes of Sky," he whispered, his soft voice mingling with the breeze that blew down from the high country towards Hogsmeade and the train would take her away for ever. He wondered if she could hear, perhaps by some strange magic.

He watched dully as AngelFyre picked up the crumpled and tear stained parchment, smoothed it out and read. It felt like the end of the world to Colin, and in a way it was. Just as his world had ended when Jarael disappeared. Just as it had ended when he believed Liam had died. Just as it had ended when Lorcan died. Just as it had ended when Ciarán was so horribly broken. So many worlds shattered.

This letter simply shattered another world.

Why did Clair have to go to America anyway? She wasn't American. He'd loved Clair. He was sure of that. Why would her father take here away? These were mysteries beyond Colin's understanding and the only sure thing now was the pain.

23 December -- early morning

Her hand recoiled when he turned and snarled at her, baring his fangs, along with flashes of pond scum green eyes that were simmering in anger. AngelFyre was not scared at all that Colin was going to hurt her; her reaction was nothing more than a quick, hair triggered reflex. As quickly as her hand moved back to her side, his fit of anger did as well, but the one had nothing to do with the other. Whatever was going on with him, she knew he subconsciously knew she was there and would not have hurt her. In his werewolf form, all bets would be off, and even then, she knew that if it ever occurred, it would not truly be Colin doing the hurting. But this? This was not that.

He thrust the owl he had received at her, and before she could take it from him, he began to go off about something being in America... no. Wait. Someone was taken to America; away from Colin. AngelFyre was wondering who it could be, and her first thought landed on his parents taking his little sister, but before she could sweep past that puzzling thought, Colin just sort of slunk down to the ground, as defeated as she had ever seen him, with possibly the exception of finding him up here after Liam's "death". Her fierce, lupine friend, now reduced to the plaintive whimpers of a pup, called out "Eyes of Sky" in heart rending sobs. The parchment had slipped from his grasp and skittered briskly across the ground before AngelFyre swooped down to retrieve it.

Hearing his endearment for Clair whispered on the breeze, AngelFyre's first thought was that she needed to get him down to the train as soon as possible. Of course he would want to be consoled by his best girl upon learning such devastating news about Ciarán. She knew her own heart would call out to Simon if she had suffered a similar loss. It was strange to her that he was not up and moving as fast as he could to his heart's desire, and then AngelFyre glanced down at the parchment.

There was not much to be seen, as it turned out, but what there was brought her heart into her throat. "Clair?" she questioned. And then a little more forcefully, but there was no question this time, only resignation. "Clair." To herself she was pondering why Clair would be going to the States, but the primary question on her mind was WHY the bloody H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks did she choose to tell Colin in an owl? An owl? Really?

Anger was burbling to the surface, but her anger was misplaced and would not be a help to her friend just then. She knew Clair loved Colin. And Clair certainly knew Colin loved Clair. There had to be a reason for all of it, and AngelFyre was in no position to judge anyone else's heart.

She sighed and knelt down behind him, wrapping him in a hug. AngelFyre rested her chin on the top of his head as Colin stared forward, off into the bare, cold, and vast valley stretching before him, much as his future probably looked and felt to him right then without the prospect of Clair any longer in it.

Contact was all she knew to do for him in the moment, and she prayed he would feel the unspoken message that he was not alone.

Colin rocked gently, but it brought no comfort. The world appeared suddenly dull and empty. As high as Colin had flown when Clair said she would be his girlfriend; he now felt blatched and tumbling into the rocky gorge below the viaduct. His entire body shook as he cried his heart out.

AngelFyre didn't say anything. She reached down and scooped up the letter. Colin didn't care. He didn't look up. He felt lost. Again. How easily broken was his heart! How easily torn. How easily battered. Colin felt a presence at his back. AngelFyre had moved. He felt her kneel down. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders and rested her chin on his head. Still she said nothing. She didn't need to.

Colin stared into nothingness. Not the darkness he had become used to. Just the nothingness of a broken heart. AngelFyre rocked him gently. Colin let her. He knew she would try to heal him. He wanted that. He needed to grieve first. Colin's mind wandered. To the races he'd flown against Clair. To all their kisses. To the times they'd gone on adventures together and the chaos of the balls they'd been too. Fresh tears flowed with each memory.

He began to shiver. Still AngelFyre stayed with him. Questions began to rise in Colin's mind. Questions that needed answers, but he could think of no sensible answers for them. He turned slightly within her embrace. His tear filled eyes sought hers, knowing implicitly she would know the answer. His voice cracked when he was at last able to speak.

"Why, Fyre? Why did Clair have to go? What did I do wrong?"

23 December -- early morning

Her heart broke for her friend at his last question. She quickly moved around to his side and sat down next to him, shoulder to shoulder. It was, in a lot of ways, a child's question, but AngelFyre in no way thought Colin a child. He was in shock and feeling vulnerable, so it was natural to ponder what he might have done to create the situation now confronting him. She knew he thought of her as his personal Seer and had placed a great deal of trust in her abilities, but she was not all knowing. Even if she knew the answers to his questions as to why this had happened... why Clair had had to go... telling him would most likely bring no relief. It was a child's question going out to the person he right now thought most likely to be able to answer it, but AngelFyre had nothing that would bring him any solace.

"What did you do wrong? Colin, you did nothing wrong! She is not leaving because of anything you did, or did not do. The way I read her note, it sounds like her father wants her with him. It probably was not within her power to refuse."

She spoke the latter with no real conviction one way or the other. She had little insight into the personal workings of Clair's family life. Even though she was Simon's best friend, AngelFyre never prodded him for personal information and he never offered much. It was the same with her and Colin's relationship. She did not share much of his personal information with Simon because it was not hers to share. It sometimes bothered her that the four of them had not been better friends as a group. Colin knew she was devoted to Simon above anything in this world, and Simon likewise knew how much she adored Colin, but her two favorite boys had never really connected with one another except quite superficially. It had been the same with Clair and herself. They were friendly enough with each other, but it would be most accurate to say they were acquaintances and not friends.

"I do not pretend to know what Clair felt, or feels, about any of this. One thing I know she cannot be in any doubt about is your love for her." She had to stop there for a beat so that the anger that was rising up in her once again got checked at the door. Everyone knew Colin was crazy about Clair, but was Clair as gone over Colin? That had been a question AngelFyre had long held close to her vest for quite some time. Just because she was not as loud about her feelings as Colin did not mean she loved him any less, and AngelFyre tried hard to keep that in mind. Every relationship was different and every person was different. It was not her place to judge.

"I know Simon loves me more than his own life and more than anyone or anything in this world. I really do know that. Yet, the one area of contention that we have is over his persistent need to know his father." AngelFyre had to be careful here because she had never specifically shared with Colin that Simon was a dhampir or that his father was a vampire. Simon outed himself in the Headliner in October of 2023, but Colin never gave any clue he had read it, or had heard the news.

"He knows I have had visions that reveal there is real danger for him on that front, and while he believes in me and my visions, he still goes to visit each break to get to know him better. That has been hard for me... and for him... because it is the only time he has chosen himself over me. We have sparred more than a bit on it, but the thing is Colin, he has a right to be selfish and follow his desire to know his father better. For 12 years he did not even know he had a father. He lost his mother when he was only three years old, so when he found out he had a father, spending time with him was a way to get to know more about himself."

She reached over and clutched one of Colin's hands in her own, but kept looking ahead, out over the valley and towards the Great Lake. "Maybe that is what Clair is doing. Maybe it is why she left. It must have been a shock to have her biological father come into her life, but it is normal to want to know about him and find out more about one's self."

AngelFyre still had the note in her other hand. It was the signature that angered her the most. It had simply said 'goodbye, Colin'. There was no 'I am Sorry' or 'I will miss you' or 'I will write you'. But the most glaring missing sentiment, of course, was that there was no 'I love you'. That one she struggled with the most. Coming up with any reason for why she could not have tossed that much of a bone to him, even if she was going away, set her nerves on edge.

Maybe in Clair's wisdom, to have told him such, would have kept Colin's heart on the hook and would have made everything about their relationship harder. Perhaps this was the best way she could figure to not have him carry a flame for her in his heart, or the hope for her return. Maybe her clean break shattered her own heart into a million pieces in an effort to be kinder to the boy she loved.

Whether it was true or not, AngelFyre had landed on that as being the best answer to give him. So she did.

His eyes remained liquid pools of green, but that was to be expected. There was nothing to be said to make him feel better and AngelFyre knew that. And deep down, Colin knew it, too. All she could do was be with him and hurt for her friend as he struggled with another loss.

"I am sorry, Colin. If I could make this easier for you, you know I would do it in a heartbeat, but you cannot chase your tail wondering what you did to make her go away. That I can answer for you with no hesitation whatsoever. Nothing. You did nothing wrong."

She then turned to him and smiled tenderly. "You only loved her. Be happy about that, and believe that she was happy about that, too."

AngelFyre spoke at last. A part of Colin, deep inside perhaps, was dimly aware that AngelFyre was a kid, no older than himself. How could she answer the questions that he was asking? She was the same age. How would she know? But that part of Colin could neither answer the question nor soothe the hurt. And thank God AngelFyre knew exactly what to say! She was Colin's personal seer, yes. But she was also much more. A best friend. A sister who truly understood him. Often times better than he knew himself. Some people might think it weird if your friend knew what you were going to say or do before you did it. But not Colin. Especially where Fyre was concerned.

Colin leaned against her shoulder, his head bowed, too defeated to do anything but let her voice enter his heart and begin the work of patching the rents and tears. Of course she was right. Why would Clair ever want to leave Hogwarts? Well, she most likely didn't. She most likely didn't have a say at all. Colin wondered. If that were true, then maybe it was no wonder her letter didn't say much? Maybe she was as shocked to be leaving as he was to see her leave?

She made him smile. Even through his tears. "She cannot be in any doubt about is your love for her." Why was this so hard? It had been hard enough when Jarael disappeared. And now ... Clair disappeared too! Fyre talked a little about Simon. Things Colin didn't know. Well, to be fair, Simon was pretty much a closed book. He knew Simon --- rather he knew of Simon. He was Fyre's boyfriend. He was a broom racer and a fellow healer intern. He was good looking. They'd met a few times and chatted at those times. And that was about it. Colin had never asked Fyre about Simon, and now she was telling him about her boy.

It wasn't long before she connected the dots. Simon had this desperate urge to know his Da. Maybe. Just maybe. Clair's Da had this same desperate urge to know his own daughter? Colin sighed deeply. Not what he wanted to hear at all. Okay. So. Why move Clair to America? She has no choice. Why can't he move to England?

Colin's hand squeezed into a fist. The thing was starting to make him angry. He didn't like that feeling. Colin only ever really got angry if something was really and truly wrong. And the things Fyre was saying made sense. She grabbed his hand. Maybe she wouldn't notice the fist briefly formed. And then she said what he was thinking. It felt perfectly natural. AngelFyre just knew. But more importantly, she was able to say it to his mind in a way his own heart often couldn't. She had the words.

His tears flowed heavier. He really did love Clair! He knew in his heart this was true. But if it were true that her Da wanted to know Clair; then might it not also be true that Clair wanted to know her own Da? How could he be so selfish to want to keep her here if that were true? Colin sniffed and rubbed his nose on his sleeve. Love meant always wanting what was truly the best for his beloved. This is how he knew Ma and Da loved him. Even when there were difficulties. And it was the same with Liam. And AngelFyre.

Still, Colin's heart hurt so badly.

"You only loved her. Be happy about that, and believe that she was happy about that, too," she said. Colin drew a ragged breath. His Fyre had a wisdom his mind could only guess and marvel at. Yet his heart knew she was right. He did love Clair, and, in some way, he always would. He still loved Jarael, and he always would. It's just how his heart worked. Even if he wasn't able to express it just yet. And no doubt some other girl would come to inhabit his heart. And Colin knew without a doubt that he would love her too.

Colin nodded his head against AngelFyre's shoulders as she said those last words. They were what he needed to hear. He just prayed that he would soon meet his for real love. The heartbreak was killing him!

23 December -- early morning

AngelFyre could feel some of the tension leaving him, but she knew he was still processing all that she had said and all that he was feeling. She leaned her cheek against his head, now resting on her shoulder, and sat quietly with him. He was no longer lashing out in his anger and hurt, so his body was naturally stilling itself. Well, as much as his fidgety self could ever really still itself. She had no way of knowing for certain, but she had long figured that Colin was even active in his sleep. In any case, she sat and let him work through what he could for the time being. It was going to be a process... and a sucky one at that... but she was glad to be there at the very beginning of it to help calm him through what she could.

When he lifted his head and wiped his sniffly nose on his sleeve, she reached her hand around and patted him on his back. "I know it will not make up for the loss you have been dealt this morning, Woofy, but I have a little something for you. I painted it at the beginning of the month and kept wanting to give it to you sooner, but I think all things happen for a reason. Today was the day you were meant to have it."

She reached over to where she had set his Christmas box down in the mayhem a few minutes prior. She blew a little of the detritus off the top of it that had been kicked up, and handed it over to him with an encouraging smile. "The good news, or maybe bad news," and she shoulder bumped him as he was opening it, "is that you will always be stuck with me."

When he finally lifted the lid, he would see the Christmas ornament she had painted of the two of them. "I hope you like it, Woofy, and if not today, I hope it will make you smile some day soon. Look," and she leaned over again, but there was no shoulder bump this time. "I even included the infamous fang necklace. I often see it bouncing when we go for our morning runs, so it of course had to be included."

She tried to smile as brightly as she could, hoping to lift his mood a little. And because she knew he was broken right then, she felt what he needed most was some affection, so she leaned in even more and softly kissed his cheek.

As soon as her lips touched his skin, she had the oddest thought of Simon kissing Clair in Madam Puddifoots, under some mistletoe... in March... when it was not even Christmas. Her impish sense of humor had her about to make a quip about this pairing of best friends kissing, at Christmas... without the need of mistletoe... but she wisely stifled that nonsense. She instead said, simply, "Happy Christmas, Colin."

Colin's heart stirred. He knew he couldn't change what had been done. AngelFyre reminded him that he wasn't at fault. Even if Clair's family for some reason didn't like what or who he was, it just didn't make sense for Colin to blame himself. That was the darkness talking again. Maybe that horrid potion he'd given up drinking. Maybe the dubious quality alcohol that even the Hogshead deemed to gross and cheap to flog to their equally dubious quality clientele. Or, perhaps, it was some other power working in the dim fringes of his awareness...

Fyre pushed a nicely decorated box into Colin's hands. "How is it girls always make things so nice looking?" Colin wondered softly. She pointed out the werewolf fang necklace that she'd so carefully painted on the smooth orb. The two figures, himself and herself, were running across the scene as they'd done so many times the last three and a half years. They were some of the happiest times Colin could remember.

His bestie's lips brushed his cheek with a sisterly kiss. A couple months earlier and that would have been a daring and dangerous move! Colin on hag slugs had been the terror of St Mungos, apparently. He thought back to the howler he got from Ma demanding that he get himself checked out and the slugs removed. That was a day of excitement all around! Honestly, how many hag slugs could one boy harbour! He was sure he'd lost half a stone from his already skinny body with two whole buckets full of angry looking recently evicted slugs!

He let out a sigh.

Happy times had become increasingly rare after his first year at Hogwarts. He and Liam had been drawn into an old struggle, the battle between the light and the dark. He knew it wasn't just angels and demons duking it out with cosmic blazing swords. The real battlefield was the human heart, and Colin knew his own had nearly been won over to the other side. He'd been resistant, though, and with Liam and AngelFyre and even his older sister Aoife's help, and not a little hard work on his seanmamó's part, they got him straightened out.

Colin lifted the fang in question so AngelFyre could take it. He smirked. "Ye know Fyre, we met him last summer," Colin whispered. "Auld Threefangs." Colin barked out a harsh laugh. It was most uncharacteristic of his usual merriment. "Me and Liam. Up at Wolf Rock, north of our house." He bounced the fang in his slender hand. "Big dark wolf he is. All brawn, no brain. He snarled at me and I could see the spot where his missing fang would fit in. This fang. I don't know if he meant to reveal himself or not, but at least I'd know the wolf if I ever caught his scent again."

Colin paused. So many things happened that day. "He attacked me. Tried to kill me. He almost succeeded, too, if Liam hadn't sped in to the fray!" The boy smiled fondly. "We totally brutalised him, Fyre! It was actually awesome! Liam gouged out his eye and bit off one of his ears! I got him down below!" Colin's laughter turned merry again as he smirked at AngelFyre. "Let's just say he won't be making any babies!"

His mood shifted again.

"We didn't know it, me and Liam or we'd've turned back for home, but Ciarán and Lorc followed us up to the Rock. I don't kn---" Colin choked up again. "The twins were attacked. Ciarán ended up in St Mungos, and still isn't back to school yet. I don't know who got her. L---" Colin let out heavy puff of breath. "I know who got him. Three Fangs. Must have been before he attacked me. His body was still and cold when I found him. There was so much blood."

Colin looked into AngelFyre's eyes. He knew she would understand. "There's always so much blood, Fyre. Some of the bite marks showed four big fangs. The bite on his neck --- only three. That's how I know it was him. Ci was bitten, but the other --- he was mauled and shredded. Three Fangs wasn't trying to turn him. He wanted to kill, and he did." Colin narrowed his eyes and turned to look northwards, away from Hogwarts down below. "One day I'll meet him again, Fyre. Me and Liam." He kissed the fang that hung round his neck. "He won't get away from us, and when we're done, he won't be sporting any fangs."
