After the bloodbath that took out Draven, things looked to be on a cool down with only three of the five duellists casting spells. But things were far from calm. Julian, still lying on the piste, seized the opportunity to right himself. The badger wasn’t looking too hot and had probably anticipated that his indisposed state would be taken advantage off. Instead, the snakes would accurately predict the actions of the badgers which led to Julian remaining safe for the time being. Matthew knew he was going to be next after Draven, and he wasn’t going down without some fancy footwork. The snake would stare down the wands of Jake and Hades before gracefully avoiding both of the Knockback Jinxes that they sent his way. Archer, proving that he was indeed the snakes’ secret weapon, would show his prowess again by striking Hades on the chest with another Knockback Jinx. Jessamine was impressed. The snakes were putting up quite the fight.

By some miracle Archer was not just still standing on the piste, he was standing unscathed. Raising the guardrails across his mind his finger found release in the familiar flicks of his wand and the destruction such a small movement caused, even to his upperclassman. Fate could pair him up with whichever opponent of her fancy, he could still submit to weakness another day.

Whether out of sportsmanship (in his state though, such a consideration was probably unlikely) or his knowledge of the tricky shot Archer would refocus fire on the previously paralysed death god. While his casting proved to be not as skilful as last time’s it still sent Hades back with pinpoint accuracy. It should have been barely a dent if he was really going to live up to his reaper name.

So Draven was gone. Matthew had dodged the spells this round but Archer didn’t have to do calculus to figure out soon enough he will too. Observing the scene as he always would he offered his only lasting teammate no concern, at most a curious cock of the head in his direction and nothing to say.

In this round, Hades had decided to use the Flipendo towards Matthew, but he could see how his target dodged the spell as if it were nothing, something he did not find bearable. He had a frown on his face, a confused expression perfectly described on his face. That’s how things were going to be, huh? Hades thought, shaking his head.

Archer was the one who cast a spell on Hades, noticing how the spell hit his chest but didn’t fall off, he just staggered back a little. He quickly regained his composure and looked at his rivals and then his teammates. He looked at Julian “I hope you’re okay now.” he said, clicking his tongue as he prepared for the next round.

Matthew was quick! Though both Jake and Hades had aimed at him, they hadn't been able to hit him, as he deftly avoided the spells. Jake was stunned for a moment...Maybe that was something that being younger gave him an advantage on, because he was definitely nimble as he avoided two spells at once. Julian however was back on his feet, and Draven was already out of the duel. With that, it would be a three on two advantage for his team. And the two Slytherins left were the two youngest at that.

Jake watched them to see if they were going to keep fighting, but they didn't show any signs of giving up. Instead, Archer was able to return fire and even hit Hades, just like Julian had been knocked down before. Jake was impressed....Being older, the Hufflepuffs may have been harder to knock out of a fight, but if the Slytherins kept this up they would wear them down. The dueling time limits had gotten longer...they only needed to chip away. They were putting up more of a fight than Jake had expected, and he kept his eye on Julian to make sure he was alright as he stood. He nodded again, and gripped his wand. He couldn't take the Slytherins lightly. They were clearly good at this and as Jake had seen before, those who thought they were definitely going to win were often the most surprised when they didn't.

Action: As Strategized | Calming Presence Is In Affect For Allied Vipers | Banner Credit to Prat Pass

While avenging his teammate was a clear goal Matthew desired to achieve he was against odds that far outweighed him and brute strength wouldn't be enough. He had to be tactical,
cunning, the snake he always denied writhing under his skin desperate to come out, to finally be seized and utilised. Well carpe diem, he supposed. If they want him to be a Slytherin he would go all out.

Flipping his cherry would wand in his hand he would give the intimidation affect of levelling it against the already prone Julian but in truth it was all a guise. Grounding himself against the wood below and feeling the air ease around him with a calming wash he secretly prepared to dodge knowing that he was the next likely candidate for their barrage.

While only two spells would have to be dodged Matthew was still at risk of taking a heavy hit and he had to draw on every fibre of his being to not give in to the fear of what was to come. When the spells fired he shaped the very air around him cutting through it like a warm knife in butter and letting the elder boy's attempts fizzle into the walls around them. Safe, be thought to himself. But for how long.

Julian might have been a little speedier at getting up, if he hadn't noticed -- out of the corner of his eye -- a cherry pointed right in his direction. He was forced, then, to brace himself to roll away, rather than continue pulling himself to his feet.

The impact never came, however. Whether it had been a crafty bluff or a change of strategy borne out of necessity -- it wasn't long before Matthew found himself on the receiving end of both Jake and Hades' spells -- the damage was done, and by the time Julian was upright once more, he'd missed a whole round of spell-casting.

It was obvious that Archer wanted to continue his perfect precision streak, and while the snake still had decent aim, it seemed like Julian was catching on to his casting tells. Archer aimed his trustworthy Knockback Jinx at him, but the badger was only clipped on the shoulder. It was surely a sturdy hit, but Julian found himself still standing. Jake, acknowledging the threat of the second year, chose to remove Archer entirely from the next round. Perhaps the snake was too focused on Julian that he didn’t see Jake’s wand pointed at him, conjuring a blindfold over his eyes. His vision would be cut off, replaced by the darkness of black cloth. Unfortunately for the snakes, Matthew was having an even worse time. He wasn’t only facing two badger enemies, but also the enemy of self. The snake narrowly avoided Hades’ Knockback Jinx, but his dip to dodge put him in the path of Julian’s. On it’s own, Matthew would have been much like Julian, suffering but still standing. However, his own Knockback Jinx, meant for taking down Julian, exploded in his face and sent him flipping over into unconsciousness. Jessamine stopped the duel once more until Matthew was taken off the piste. Restarting it felt like she was enacting punishment on the lone snake, but the duel had to go on.

The duel was getting more interesting. He and his teammates tried to eliminate the weakest, and they did. He watched as Jake and Julian performed their spells, impacting Matthew and Archer. Each cast a different spell, the first being a Flipendo and then a blinding spell. But the thing was not so really... For in the midst of both spells, it was his turn.

Unfortunately, his spell was dodged by Matthew, but when Matthew tried to carry out his attack on Julian, it seemed that the plan backfired, as the spell hit Slytherin’s boy. He was surprised to see how all this was happening, and had to wait until they had to withdraw his rival before continuing. Quite unexpected plot twist, he thought.

Jake winced as Matthew hit the ground. It was great for their dueling team, but not great for his conscience. Even when a younger student was very good, which he was (he had even almost taken out Julian!), it still didn't feel very good to knock out somebody four years below you. It felt pretty awful actually....

Sure, Jake wasn't about to give up...But that didn't mean he was about to like it. Archer was blindfolded, and that was his fault too. He had done what he would do in any duel, not wanting to take his opponent's lightly just because they were younger. But having a three-on-one advantage wouldn't feel good against somebody his own age, and against a second year? one who was blindfolded at his own hand? It felt almost laughably unfair...Half of him hoped the boy would give in...but if he didn't, Jake knew he had to keep dueling. The boy was brave, but could he really win against all odds? Jake remembered being in a similar situation once though...fighting a duel that had felt unwinnable when his team-mates dropped. It had felt like a victory just to survive it. He watched Archer to see if he wanted to keep fighting. He took a deep breath and got ready for what would happen next, trying to silence the guilty voice in his head that didn't want to see it.

As darkness descended over him Archer didn’t even have the chance to bid goodbye to Matthew, taken out by two flipendos which he had heard clearly enough. The blindness settling over him, Archer gave the small reaction of grinding his teeth, but no further evident frustration as he stood his ground, even if the Vipers only had him remaining.
