Without skipping a beat, Kaitlyn gracefully shook Lemon’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you, Lemon.” She giggled softly and shrugged. “If you’d like. I don’t mind. Lemon is a unique name. I haven’t heard of any other Lemon’s here.” She smiled at the young Hufflepuff. “Oh, and I’m a second-year Slytherin,” she continued, realizing she forgot to say it. However, in her opinion, which house you were in did not matter. If she wanted to befriend you, she would regardless.

Kaitlyn released Lemon’s hand after a few moments. “If you don’t mind me asking, Lemon…” The hand that didn’t need self-care started to play with one of her pigtails. “… were you doing anything important before this? Sorry, I know that comes off as me being nosy. You don’t have to answer. It’s just …” She lowered her voice to be respectful to Lemon’s privacy “… When that happens, especially unexpectedly, it can stain your clothes,” she warned them.

While she had come there with a purpose, in this case, to fix a relatively minor issue with her appearance … yet it felt very major to her. After all, Kaitlyn prided herself in her appearance. She knew she was pretty … really, the only aspect about herself that she was confident in. Yet, she didn’t want to be rude and wanted to help the younger Hufflepuff. If she could help, she’d gladly do so.

“It’s nice to meet you, Lemon,” the girl said, talking Lemon's outstretched hand and shaking it gracefully. “If you’d like. I don’t mind. Lemon is a unique name. I haven’t heard of any other Lemon’s here.” That was certainly true. They doubted whether there were even many other 'Lemon's in the country. She smiled at them before she continued. “Oh, and I’m a second-year Slytherin." That would explain why they hadn't seen Kaitlyn before in any of their classes.

Kaitlyn began to play with one of her pigtails. “If you don’t mind me asking, Lemon… were you doing anything important before this? Sorry, I know that comes off as me being nosy. You don’t have to answer. It’s just …” She lowered her voice. "When that happens, especially unexpectedly, it can stain your clothes."

What were they doing before this? It had been pushed out of their mind completely. "I was at the library," they answered, trying to remember. "I like the library. It's quiet and the rows and rows of books feel like the walls of a fortress." My fortress, they thought. I'm always safe there. Realising they'd gotten distracted again, Lemon interrupted their thoughts and continued. "I was just going to go back to my dorm before dinner."

Kaitlyn fought the urge to start cleaning her nails. She was having a conversation with someone else, and that meant she needed to be focused on the conversation at hand and not get distracted. That was hard at times. It was also distracting because she wanted to fix her slight appearance issue. But, the desire to be polite won out, so she continued to listen to the conversation as she was supposed to. Her etiquette teacher would be proud.

“Ah, the library. I love going there; it’s so peaceful,” Kaitlyn agreed, smiling again. “And a wealth of information, as well.” She very much doubted that she’d ever be able to read all the books the library had to offer. That didn’t mean that she wouldn’t try, however! Every now and then, she liked to rent books from the library. So far, they’ve been mostly catered to her interests or something she was curious about.

“Out of the classes here that you’re taking … are any of them your favorite?” Kaitlyn asked, her voice getting a smidge louder the more she talked to Lemon. As much as she didn’t know much about them, she wanted Lemon to know that she was a friendly face. Even just for someone to talk to … Kaitlyn would be more than happy to listen.

“Ah, the library. I love going there; it’s so peaceful,” Kaitlyn said. “And a wealth of information, as well." Lemon was glad she understood. They'd described it so... personally. It would have been awkward if she hadn't understood. The girl continued the conversation. “Out of the classes here that you’re taking … are any of them your favorite?”

Lemon thought for a moment. There were so many. Of course, History of Magic is nobody's favourite, from Lemon's point of view. "I think... Charms." They said decidedly. They knew that they were at least somewhat good at the subject: they had gotten 3 'outstanding's and 2 'exceeds expectations' on their assignments. And their Charms professor was definitely one of their favourite teachers: she was so fun and lively, qualities that Lemon admires in a person.

" I also quite like Potions," they added. "And flying and transfiguration and astronomy and... I guess I just like them all." They laughed. "Not so much History of Magic, though. But that usually goes without saying." They hoped Kaitlyn didn't like History of Magic too much, or that she'd be offended by their words. "I mean," they continued, trying to make sure that they didn't offend her. "It's just not for me, you know?"

Kaitlyn stayed silent as Lemon spoke. She gave them an encouraging smile but didn’t try to cut in. With active listening, it was essential to let the other person speak and be heard. More importantly, she needed to show that she was actually listening. After all, she had the feeling that Lemon was pretty similar to her with being shy. She naturally had no idea how others treated Lemon, so she wanted to make sure this was a positive exchange.

Once Lemon was finished, Kaitlyn waited a few extra beats before speaking. “That’s a lovely list. Charms, Potions, Flying, Transfiguration, and Astronomy. Such wonderful classes.” She giggled at the comments about History of Magic and gently shook her head. Her braided pigtails swayed from the movement. “I understand. History’s important, but that class just seems so dry,” she chuckled.

“My favorite is Herbology,” Kaitlyn showed Lemon the dirt caked under her nails. “I enjoy the class and the plants so much, and I even volunteer to help tend to the plants in my free time … at least for the greenhouses I’m allowed to be in. I also like Potions and Astronomy.” She let silence fall between them for a few moments, before continuing. “For my least favorite, I’d say flying. Um, I know you just said it’s your favorite … and there’s nothing wrong with the class; it’s just that I was scared of heights and having control of the broom. Although, I managed to help another girl in my year, last year, fly back to the ground. I think I’m learning, though … slowly on managing to fly a broom."
