It was so peculiar that Mahlioz's life was feeling almost normal. Just two weeks ago their dorms had gotten flooded, and before that they'd learned Astra had maybe tried to kill someone, and before that there had been the whole Hogsmeade thing, and before that there had been the move.

But the last two weeks had been uneventful. Mahlioz had focused on studying, on being a little more... present. On taking advantage of Hogwarts while she could. Because it was finally slowly dawning on her how ridiculously dangerous this place was, and it was too late for her to stop loving the castle, so she might as well make the most of the good things before it was too late. Because it would be too late one day, wouldn't it? They couldn't go on being unaffected and naive like they had been forever.

At least, thanks to the return to a relatively normal life, they noticed that the move had a little less effect on them. They weren't all the way sure why. When she thought about it, she missed her old home so much it hurt, and the fact that she would have to be returning to France for the summer was a painful thought. But it wasn't like before anymore. Spending the winter holidays here had done them some good. They were more... okay, now.

Mahlioz was walking through the corridors rather aimlessly, repeating bits and pieces and dates from their History of Magic homework in their head. She was however taken out of her thoughts by the passing of an older year she recognized. She had seen them around - and weren't they a prefect? They had been there at that Christmas event with the decorating. And the worked on the Headliner too, Mahlioz had edited some of their articles. She couldn't remember their name but she could absolutely remember something about the fact that they were nonbinary. They were older, and genderqueer - they had to know things, didn't they? They were more experienced.

Could they help Mahlioz? With this stupid crisis she'd been having since first year? Was she allowed to ask, or was that weird? Maybe they were busy, maybe this was stupid - too late. She'd gone up to them and hesitantly tapped them on the shoulder.
"Uh, hi. I - uh, sorry, I'm. You're..." Oh gods, how to do this. "You're, like, trans, right? Nonbinary?" What a way to begin a conversation. "I'm, er... I'm wondering if I could ask you some questions? If you're free, of course. About gender? I'm just. Really confused. And I was thinking you might be able to help me? If you don't mind."

Agh, talking to new people. Why hadn't Mahlioz just decided to talk to one of their other genderqueer friends? Reltyl - well, Reltyl wouldn't talk to them - or Qrow, or that kid from a while ago, Pax... But perhaps it was something to do with the age, the fact that this prefect probably knew much more than them from experience. Or maybe the fact that they didn't know each other helped the situation, made Mahlioz feel less judged. She wasn't sure. It was all confusing enough.

Whether this older year could help untangle some of that confusion was yet to be seen.

Dori was on a late morning galivant. They had significantly decreased their responsibilities having stepped down from the broom racing team and the healing internship. This had left them with a lot of free time for doing things like- going on walks, or painting, or just being a person again. Or, their favorite, spending time with Elsi without having to worry about the impending doom of homework or adulthood. They hated to admit it, giving themselves more free time to think did help them- well... have time to think and somehow that prevented the hours of catastrophizing because they had brought themselves back down to a baseline where they could exist once more.

This was how they found themselves wandering the corridors on this Sunday morning. Elsi was unavailable, sadly, so they had to find something else to occupy their time. But, the something else seemed to find them instead.

A tap on their shoulder caught their attention as they turned around to what looked like a- mildly confused child. But one that Dori recognized from the bauble decorating event that they ran. "Mahlioz! Hello!" Quickly the Slytherin seemed to stumble through a rather interesting request, and one that Dori was happy to get. With a gentle sort of herd, they guided them to the side of the corridors away from the main traffic. "Oh yeah! I've got the they/them and the bisexuality, I'm here and queer in multiple ways!"

They tried to corral their smile into something comforting, but also encouraging. They knew about confusing, they knew about how isolating and lonely it could feel, and if they could prevent that feeling for someone else- even just a little, they would jump at the chance. "I can sure try! I might not have all the answers, but I can at least talk about my own experience? What 'cha got for me?"

They didn't think this could be too hard- right?

Mahlioz reddened when they recognized her - dang it, they knew her name, now she felt even worse for not remembering theirs. But at least she wasn't bothering them, and they were really nice. They clearly knew who they were and were proud of it. Will I have that someday? They seemed happy to hear her questions, not judgemental in the least - thank the stars. Mahlioz was already nervous enough, half planning to run away right now so they wouldn't have to deal with their problems.

But they were here, and the older year was reassuring, and they wanted answers for gods' sake. They took a couple breaths, trying to reorganize their thoughts and questions in a way that wouldn't make them absolute gibberish. "Okay. Well. Um." Great start. "I've been, uh, doing some research. About gender. And there's, like, a lot of them out there, right? I don't know if you've, uh, been on the muggle internet before, but. It seems like there's every gender possible listed somewhere on there."

A breath in, a breath out. Was talking to people supposed to be this hard? "It's very... overwhelming. I mean, I find stuff that fits a little, and some stuff that should fit but that doesn't really, and... well, I guess my question is how do you choose? No, wait, wrong wording. I know you don't choose your gender, but like, you choose your labels, right?" Oh gods, she wasn't even sure where she was going with this anymore. Time felt like it was speeding up, she couldn't think, her face was getting hotter by the second. Pause. Just wait. You can do this, come on.

They cleared their throat. "How do you decide exactly what to pick? It's already hard enough to find a word that fits, but like... if it's something really obscure, no one will know it, and then what's the point? But at the same time, choosing something too broad is vague and not, like..." Not perfect, like they always wanted everything to be. "I don't know. I'm sorry, I'm not making very much sense. I'm very confused." You said that already. She stuffed her hands in her pocket in order not to fidget from nervousness.

She had no idea whether this prefect would know how she was feeling at all. They were nonbinary, but did they have more obscure microlabels or were they just content with that? Microlabels were cool, honestly - she loved learning about them and admiring the pretty flags, but. Were they worth anything? No one else knew them, no one else cared. If she chose a microlabel, it would never be recognized. She would never have anyone to bond with over her specific type of queer. Yet it seemed like only they could really get into the intricacies of how she felt.

Gods, they hoped they weren't scaring away the older year. Maybe they were reading into it all too much. "Also, how the heck are you supposed to come out? Especially if you're not changing your pronouns. Do you even come out then? Are there rules?" She hoped there were rules. Rules made things make a little more sense.

Dori was patient, endlessly patient, as they watched Mahlioz verbalize everything they had asked themselves one summer as they scrolled through various websites and YouTube videos and stupid quizzes about being trans. They had felt so alone, with no answers, and feeling incredibly lost. There wasn't anyone Dori had known at school that was trans, and honestly- they didn't know if they would've approached them. This made them so determined to have this at least go decently well. As Mahlioz spoke, Dori spotted an empty bench and continued their gentle herding of the small teenager child to take a seat.

In their head, they made a little laundry list of the questions that they were really asking. "First off, take some deep breaths. You're doing great, you're less confused than you think you are but it does feel overwhelming." They sat back on the bench and stared up at the ceiling, trying to remember what it felt like. "Before your time, since I'm so old and ancient, I actually shaved my head in the abandoned bathrooms because I was freaking out so bad about my gender and my life. And by shave, I mean I took shears to it and my friend had to come in and help save my head. I looked awful." They couldn't help but laugh about it now. "All this to say, if you haven't cried yet you're doing much better than me. And if you have, that's the pretty standard experience."

Laundry list, the internet. "I'm a muggle-born, so yes I know the internet and I spent an entire summer, no summer camp or anything, googling and youtubing and reading. I was shut up all summer. There really is- so much. And a lot of it sometimes feels like its for people who aren't trans, rather than people who are if that makes sense. I uh- it's hard to decide. Honestly. I'm not even sure if non-binary completely fits me, but it fits well enough." They shrugged and rubbed their head as a little bit of a comfort stim. "It's not to say you can't find something that's perfect, but every experience is so unique that it's hard to find a perfect one for everyone. Like, I'm not a girl or boy, I'm not one some of the time more than others, I'm not- both, and I'm not either. You know? I'm just- Dori." They smiled to themselves, they had come so far.

"But you're right, you do choose the label. You're trying to match the way you feel to a word and a flag really. I get wanting to feel understood, I really do. You want to be able to point at something and go- this! This is me! This is a definition and other people, I'm not alone. But... understanding myself is more important than people understanding a definition about me. I use non-binary, because that's what feels best to me. But at the beginning I felt like I had to cling to it and scream about it. I have all the things, the flag, pins, everything. I don't need that as much now. I know what feels good for me, and eventually I stopped thinking about things in terms of how it would affect how people thought about me. How would I look the most non-binary, how could I make people double-take and reassess what they perceived me to be?"

"Don't get me wrong, I still really struggle with things like make-up and clothing and jewelry, it's kind of a never-ending internal war. It has gotten easier, though." They finally looked over at Mahlioz, after focusing on an incredibly fascinating brick in the wall. "There are no rules for coming out, you do it how you want to. I was actually more worried about my dad's reaction, since I took his name: Dorion. But, he cried, my mom cried, I wanted to be anywhere but between my two crying parents. I can acknowledge that I was lucky though, they have been incredibly supportive. Got me binders, whatever gender affirming things I felt like would help. They're helping me look into magical gender intervention stuff- as much as they can." Wow- they had talked a lot. Their mouth was honestly kind of dry. They pulled a water bottle out of their bag and took a sip.

"Also, you can change your mind. If you want to change your name, what pronouns you use, what specific word you want to use to label yourself, whatever makes you feel happy and comfortable. I come out every time I introduce myself, really. Hi I'm Dorion Anderson, I use they/them pronouns, and I'm a sixth year Hufflepuff Prefect." They mimed shaking someone's hand. "But, again, it's up to you. If it's important that the people close to you know your identity, then tell them, but otherwise they don't have to know if you don't want them to. There's no shame in that."

They sighed, or took a deep breath, they couldn't really tell. "I just- talked a lot. Was literally any of that helpful? It's ok if it wasn't, you can tell me. I've never really talked about it like this before so, this is kind of new to me too. At least- like this side of it." Dori's face changed to something sheepish, their cheeks coloring a light pink as they felt slightly embarrassed about their huge gender ramble. But hopefully it helped Mahlioz a little bit, or made her run for the hills away from Dori which would be a fair reaction.

The older student was gently moving the two of them off to the side of the busy corridors towards a bench, which Mahlioz would have been grateful for if she had at all been paying attention to anything other than her words. But when they stopped talking, finally letting the other get a few words in (which was the whole reason they had come to ask for help in the first place), it seemed they weren't the only one with a lot of feelings and a lot to say on the subject.

The prefect began by reassuring her that she wasn't as confused as she thought she was, which in and of itself was confusing enough, but also that it was normal to feel overwhelmed or to cry. Mahlioz let out a half laugh at their hair-shaving story. "I mean, to be fair, it looks really good now." Had they cried about their gender yet? They couldn't even be sure. They had certainly cried a lot in the past year, sometimes while thinking about gender, but it was often a big jumble of everything wrong instead of just one thing. They weren't even sure they felt dysphoria or anything like that. Did they deserve to feel this way about gender if they didn't even feel dysphoria?

As the older year continued to speak, Mahlioz listened as attentively as she could, nodding at everything that made sense (which, surprisingly, was actually quite a bit). And she finally managed to catch their name, Dori - oh thank the gods, they could now pretend they knew all along. But the two students differed in the perfection sense. Mahlioz couldn't really understand how they were comfortable going with a term that they weren't even sure fit them completely. It was true, though - it was hard finding a term that felt exactly perfect. At first agender had felt right, but it wasn't that, not exactly - there was some gender there, just not very much, and even then it was more complicated.

Then Dori said something that hit Mahlioz like a train. Understanding myself is more important than people understanding a definition about me. They had learned this lesson before, hadn't they? Last year, at the very beginning, with the whole pronouns thing with Pax. They had forgotten. She laughed at Dori's "how could I make people double-take and reassess what they perceived me to be" because wasn't that the dream, but she understood what they were saying. This whole thing wasn't for other people. It was never for other people, it was to understand herself. They didn't need pins or flags or even terms to be content with themselves. They just wanted to know who they were. And if that was to be with really specific microlabels or with no label at all, so be it. She didn't need anyone's approval but her own.

The slightly more disappointing news was that there were no rules for coming out. She had kind of expected that, but it did make things a bit harder. Though it was nice to know Dori's parents had been so accepting - Mahlioz had no idea what her parents would do. They had been accepting of Reltyl, right? But she didn't want them to think she was copying her sibling or in a phase or something. Ach, just the thought of coming out was terrifying.

Mahlioz continued to listen intently, just catching Dori's full name - Dorion Anderson, right, they would remember that from now on. "But, like - I don't have to change my name, right?" They rather liked their name - it wasn't even all that fem to begin with. "Wait. You don't have to come out if you don't want to?" In retrospect, that made a lot of sense, but Mahlioz had been trying her best to speed up the whole figuring out of her gender just so that it wouldn't be awkward for anyone else trying to refer to her.

Look at that, she was yet again seeing her journey in terms of other people. She was kind of worried now that she had been lying to herself all along. Did she really like her name, or did she want to keep it out of ease for those who knew her? Did she even like she as a pronoun? No, that was silly, of course she did. But now they were questioning everything.

The third year nodded slowly one last time. "No, it was definitely helpful. I'm not sure if I have any less questions than before, but like... honestly, I think you answered some I didn't even realize I had. Thank you." They took a breath, trying to register everything. "Do you mind if I ask a more personal question? You don't have to answer if you don't want to. But uhm. When you were little, did you feel different from the other kids? Like, not... whatever your agab was? Because when I was younger I was kind of proud of being a girl, you know? And I'm worried, that... maybe, like, it is just a phase for me. My sibling never wanted to be a boy, ever since they were tiny - they're enby too - but I'm worried that I might be faking it or something. I didn't always dislike being called a girl. I've heard so many trans people say - y'know, like, that they've always known, but I really didn't. Is that... okay?"

Oh gods, they hoped Dori was okay with them asking even more questions after the older year's very extensive reply. "Sorry. But thank you. Seriously. I... understand a lot more now. I don't think I know exactly what I am yet but I'm definitely closer to it." To feeling better in her skin. "Thank you."
