Time: late afternoon
Weather: Cloudy
Pronouns: She/they

It was a Monday afternoon and Lemon was strolling around the library, running their fingers along. their spines with her eyes closed. The library was almost completely her own now, except for the librarian and a group of 5th years studying together in a corner. The quiet allowed her to destress from the day, and focus on their senses.

Lemon is autistic and finds day-to-day life to be incredibly stressful and noisy. When they're in the library, they can unmask and enjoy the small moments that bring them so much joy.

It was now 5:00pm, and Lemon had planned on returning to her dorm before dinner, to drop off their things. She had also planned on using the bathroom before dinner, so that it wouldn't be so crowded and noisy. Glancing at the group of fifth years in the corner, Lemon left their bag on their chair in the library and walked down the corridor, towards the bathroom.

The bathroom was deserted, just as they had hoped it would be. Walking towards the stall furthest from the door, the faint hooting of owls could be heard, an orchestra of different pitches and tones.

However, Lemon was in for quite a shock. As they pulled down their pants, they saw something red. They froze. Blood.

They didn't know what to do. What was there to do? They felt their heart racing and breathing become faster and faster. Their entire body was shaking. Lemon couldn't understand why they felt so... scared.

It was a brisk, chilly day outside of Hogwarts, and Cynthia was feeling peckish. She travels down to the dining hall to grab a bit of bread and butter, and then proceeds to duck out, roaming the halls.

I hope I don't run into Filch.. She thinks to herself. Filch never seemed to enjoy her presence, and she wondered why that could be. I wonder why he doesn't fancy my company? I thought I was quite decent to be around.. Cynthia frowns slightly as she eats her bread, savoring every bit of the salty flavor. Must be seasoned well.

Cynthia was humming softly, strolling down the halls, playing with her long pink hair. She stopped by the lavatory for a pit stop. Her plan was to do her business, and then go to see hagrid to ask about types of hippogriffs. Though, she usually wandered astray from her curiosity.

She enters the bathroom, nearly deserted. Cynthia hears panicked breathing, almost as if someone had hurt themselves by falling in some manner. Her eyes widen, and she calls out to the person softly, her quiet voice echoing through the bathroom. She keeps cautious, in case it is dangerous, or not even a person at all.

She spots shoes under one of the stalls. Curious, she knocks on it. "Hello? Are you okay? Do you need help with anything?" She tilts her head, eager to help whoever needs it.

Suddenly, Lemon heard a knocking on the door of the cubicle they were in. They'd been too panicked to hear the person walking in to the bathroom. The person spoke softly. "Hello? Are you okay? Do you need help with anything?"

She felt relieved to hear a kind voice. She could recognise the voice vaguely, and knew that it belonged to a girl in Hufflepuff in the first year. Lemon had lots of her classes with the girl and would hear her voice when they were lurking in a corner of the common room, reading or doing a puzzle.

Lemon went to open their mouth, but realised that they didn't know what to say. They weren't ashamed, but how does one say something like that? Should they just say it outright, or hint at it? In that moment, they wished their social skills were better, because surely someone neurotypical would know what to say.

As the silence grew longer, Lemon became worried that the girl might just leave. They had to say something, and quick, but they still didn't know what to say. Maybe that's just what they should say.

Opening their mouth again, Lemon felt their voice trembling before they could even speak. "I-I'm not sure what to say." They immediately felt like they should've said something different. Maybe the girl would think they were just trying to mess with her, and leave. "Please don't leave," they whispered to themself.

Kaitlyn skipped to the bathroom before dinner. It was a particularly rough day for her earlier. Dirt was caked under her nails, which was normally not much of an issue. She liked Herbology class and found it very interesting. If she needed to get her hands dirty there, she had no issue with it at all. But, she broke a few of her nails later in the day in Potions. Thank goodness it didn’t ruin her work, but it was still upsetting. That, sadly, she couldn’t immediately fix. She needed to keep up her pristine appearance, after all.

So, a trip to the lavatory was sorely needed for the young Slytherin girl. She slipped into the bathroom and dropped her satchel on the counter. She found her cuticle cleaner and a nail file in no time. Just as she was about to start her work, she heard the quiet sound of panicking. Kaitlyn noticed another girl approaching one of the stalls and attempting to talk to whoever was behind it. She glanced in the mirror in the direction of the indicated issue and gently tilted her head.

Figuring that her attempt to fix the appearance of her nails could wait a little longer, Kaitlyn turned on her heel and approached the stall. If there was one thing that always upset her, despite her shyness, it was to see someone crying. “Hi,” she said shyly to the girl outside the stall and the person within the stall. “I hate to intervene, but I’m here to help if needed. No one will judge you,” she added.

This time, Lemon heard another voice outside of the stall. They spoke in a kind voice. "Hi. I hate to intervene, but I'm here to help if needed. No one will judge you."

What to say? How many people were there outside now? They couldn't say anything, the words couldn't come out of their mouth. They had forgotten how to speak. Her head felt heavy and dizzy now; they were trapped. Trapped in her mind, trapped in this stall, not even able to ask for help, to talk to the people gathered outside. The girls outside the stall were a world away, and Lemon was stuck in their own one.

Just say something. Anything! Her voice trembling, she attempted to speak, and managed just a feeble whisper. "I need... help. It's my first time." Were they being clear enough? Oh, why couldn't they just tell the girls what was happening? Why did they feel so afraid? They both seemed to want to help, so why couldn't Lemon just tell them? Words had never failed them before, they had always been the one thing they could rely on. No one would listen when they wanted them to, but when the girls were waiting to hear their voice, it died on them.

In the silence that fell, Kaitlyn considered rushing to her satchel to offer a handkerchief. But, she quickly decided against it for now. She had no idea what was going on or even if they were actually crying. They sounded upset, after all. She figured this person would need someone to talk to for now, especially since they were in the stall. Then, she’d proceed from there. Even though she had no idea who the witch was in the stall, she figured she could still offer help.

If they needed it, Kaitlyn was always ready to listen. While she was shy, she tried her best to help. Her muggle Catholic all-girls boarding school taught them the art of active listening. She was likely nowhere near the best, but she tried as well as possible. From the few times she used it here at Hogwarts, she could tell those students seemed appreciative of her efforts. Perhaps this person in the stall could benefit? Maybe. She really had no idea.

The silence was broken by their shaky voice again. Definitely scared. Kaitlyn blinked, processing what they said. It was their first time. Closed stall. Frightened and shaky voice. Ah, right. She could remember her first time at her muggle school, too. She was also very frightened by it. “Your first time,” Kaitlyn repeated quietly and nodded. “Hey, I know how scary it is. It’s going to be all right. Just …. give me a second.” She dashed away from the stall to her satchel.

A few moments later, Kaitlyn returned to the stall with a fresh tampon package and slid it under the door. “Here, put this on,” she whispered. Giving a few moments pause, she decided to try to help their frightened behavior. “You’ll be ok. I’ll stay here, don’t worry.”

To their relief, the girl outside seemed to understand. “Your first time,” she repeated softly. “Hey, I know how scary it is. It’s going to be all right. Just... give me a second," said the voice of the girl outside the stall. Trying to slow their breathing, Lemon could hear footsteps walking towards the sinks, pause for a moment, and then the footsteps came back towards the door. Something slid underneath the door and they could hear the voice again. “Here, put this on." They picked up the item gingerly. “You’ll be ok. I’ll stay here, don’t worry.”

Still slightly trembling, but no where near as much as before, Lemon thanked the girl in a voice a little louder than before, just louder than a whisper. "Thank you." They unwrapped the package slowly and did as the girl said. A few moments later, the door to the cubicle creaked open and Lemon appeared standing even smaller than usual. Arms and legs both shaking, they walked towards the sinks, turned the tap and let the eerily cool water run over their hands.

After they'd turned the faucet off again, Lemon turned to face the girl. They smiled weakly at her, and said again, "thank you."

Kaitlyn waited by the stall, gently leaning her body against an empty one next to the one they were in. A small smile formed on her lips when she heard the thank you from the other side. True to her word, she stayed where she was and didn’t move. She never helped someone else like this before, so she hoped to be doing it correctly. While she was young, she still wanted to make sure she was at least nearby if anything else happened. She knew how difficult it was to talk about it to others, remembering how she couldn’t tell her friends about it at school. Rather, she called her parents in tears. Here at Hogwarts, that sadly wasn’t an option.

When they left the stall, Kaitlyn smiled at them but didn’t say anything at first. One of the rules of active listening was to give the other person space to not just think but also to say what was on their mind. They were clearly scared over what happened, which meant that Kaitlyn needed to show even more empathy than normal. She let them wash up at the sink, playing with one of her braided pigtails.

After what Kaitlyn deemed a respectful amount of time, she slowly walked toward her satchel still on the counter. She smiled at them again, when they properly thanked her. “You’re welcome,” she finally replied, letting her quiet voice be heard. “I’m glad to have helped you. I’m Kaitlyn,” she continued, as she picked up her cuticle cleaner.

The girl responded with, "you're welcome. I'm glad to have helped you. I'm Kaitlyn," and she picked up a cuticle cleaner. The shock starting to wear off slowly, Lemon stood awkwardly by the sink and held out their hand. "I'm Lemon, like the fruit. First year, Hufflepuff. Trust me, I usually talk much more, and I've been told my 'inside voice' is like a speaker." Lemon smiled and laughed softly. "You can call me Em or Emmie, it's probably easier and not as confusing to other people if you're calling out to me in public, fewer weird looks."

They looked at the girl's robes, Slytherin. They'd always thought people in Slytherin to be rude or mean, but this girl was neither. She was softly spoken and her face formed a smile so naturally that it was as if it was the only thing her mouth was designed to do. Her brown hair was tied perfectly into two braided pigtails. She looked friendly, like someone worth getting to know. Lemon could tell that she prided herself on her appearance, for she looked so incredibly put together, not a single stray hair in sight.

Her green earrings gave a glimpse of someone unique, someone incredibly interesting if only one were to dig deeper beneath the surface.
