The journey to Hogwarts had been one of much amusement. Beatrice had watched on as she had passed sights like no other: rolling expanses of greenery and foliage, covered with crowds of grazing livestock in all shapes and sizes. Tendrils of evergreen grass swayed in the light midday breeze, warmed ever so slightly by the beginnings of autumn. Sure, she had seen such sights as her family travelled to their holiday cottage up in Scotland, however - as far as she could recollect - these memories didn't seem to add up to the captivation of such a ride.
Unknowing of anyone or anything in the Wizarding World, Beatrice had been in two minds whether to commence her first year in a School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. For, she'd been educated in Muggle systems for the whole of her life, she was oblivious to the different variations of wands, to the different types of curses, to the history of the Wizarding World. But, after kind words and guidance from the large-spined book that she'd bought from Diagon Alley, she felt as if she had a confidence in herself - as if she was confident into coming to Hogwarts. As her mother had said on her sending off: “Keep your head up high, duck! Be strong, and pride your background.” Books didn't make friends, though. Beatrice had spent the entire train ride indulging in the sweet taste of Chocolate Frogs, from the sweet trolley, and eagerly gazing out of the coach's glass panes, in desperacy to catch a glimpse of them tall, towering spires - rather than making friends like the inhabitants of other carriages. Despite travelling a gruelling 4-hour ride from Harrogate to King's Cross, Beatrice was as happy and as enticed as ever. As the train drew into the station lay-by, the squealing of the brakes was only fuel for her excitement. Her stomach had felt as if it was somersaulting, yet in an extremely higgledy-piggledy manner.
As other students flooded off the train, she followed on. Her new robes, once washed and fragant of her mother's washing powder, swished by her sides as she stepped onto the platform. Tassels of her brunette hair had tumbled from her messily-made ponytail during the expedition and had framed her natural complexion with a contrasting tone. Confusion and chattering bubbled in the air, mingling with the scent of fresh pine. Teachers attempted, in vain, to corral the students in rows - or into any order for that matter. Students, buzzing with excitement, exchanged greetings and conversed merrily.
Soon after, a voice of reason had arose. A bellow, a half-hearted shout: “First-years this way!”
Beatrice, afraid of getting into mischief upon her arrival, politely excused herself to the front of the house. Slowly but surely, the communion of youth were led through the the vast expanse of pines. It seemed as if the trees folded down, giving room to far and billowing sheets of water.
“Watch your step!”
Peace; the lake was a definite opposition to her current state. She felt confident, she felt swells of elation rise in her chest, she felt eager.
“Mind this branch, you might trip!”

The train ride, for Jamie, was uneventful. All the monuments and incredible sights they saw on the horizon were great; Jamie was not interested. He had completely zoned out, only able to think about the ceremony. He remembered his father's words:
"You'll be in Gryffindor. I know you will."
After he had been presented with a golden lion with two rubies as eyes. It was hung on a black rope and fell loosely from his neck. Now it just put the pressure on him to be Gryffindor.
Jamie noticed the dark enclosing on the train and started to feel his first emotion of the day: nervousness. Pursing his lips he attempted to forget it and think about quidditch. But he couldn't.
Even before the voice had told the first years to come, Jamie already knew where to go. It was almost pitch black now, and even though he was now terrified, he still adored the dark.
There was a strong wind and wispy hair had been blowing across his face ever since he stepped from the carriage.
They lay at the bottom of the beach ready to be rowed. One nominee for each. As Jamie was the strongest and fittest of all his friends he knew it would be him. Hogwarts was now an illumination in a pitch dark night.
Jamie just wish his nerves were gone so he could appreciate it.

Majestic was the only word Beatrice can kinder to describe the sight of Hogwarts. Numerous amounts of lanterns glowered up the ascent of the cliffed peak, lighting a crooked stairway. Stars cast their moonshine over it's stony towers, revealing the true extent of their height. It was the only illumination within the encapsulation of darkness. It was hard to believe that one would desire to make such a spectacle invisible to a great majority of the world: Muggles. Nonetheless, she could help but cherish such a view - feeling vaguely disappointed that her parents wouldn't be able to mirror her thoughts.
Snapping from her mesmerized state of mind, the same gruff voice from earlier had called out to the students as they headed towards what seemed like a docking point. Wooden pinnaces bobbed, submissively sitting at shore without a rope to bear them. Candles, protected by a thick-rimmed glass lantern, were attached to the boats to allow clarity in the twilight. A sweet, salty lacquer hung in the air.
“Two or three people per boat, please! One person will need to nominate themselves for rowing!”
She would've thought that the boats would've been charmed to avoid effort, yet brushed it off gently.
Invited by a duo of bubbly girls, Beatrice had put herself forward as rower of the boat. She didn't mind - she had been quite a good swimmer in her early years and had rowed a couple of times with a Muggle youth organisation. The craft wobbled under Beatrice's hesitant step, causing the lantern to teeter unsteadily, yet soon straightened, allowing for the other two girls to take a seat behind her. A light breeze whipped up gentle swells across the lagoon as she begun to haul the oars into place. Tucking her robes beneath her to avoid any annoyance, she glanced around at the surrounding crafts, watching as other students stepped into their own boats.
Soon, she found herself gliding the boat across the channel. With every row, they gently preceded. She was in no present rush, gazing at the surroundings finding the scene around her wondrous and enchanting.

Even though the limit was three per boat, Jamie and his friends didn't care, so there ended up being five. As Jamie had expected he had been pushed forward to row the boat. Irritated that he had to row four heavy bodies plus himself, Jamie almost capsized the boat as he sprung into it. Looking around he saw others attempting to get into the boat without getting wet. Jamie already knew it was no use so he and friends were one of the first to get in.
Pushing away from the dock, Jamie already felt the wait of the others in the boat. Finally the others had stopped having an argument about who was rowing and had started floating towards Hogwarts. The young man who had been directing the first years gave Jamie a long, disapproving stare. But Jamie knew he wasn't going to stop then, the last boat was now fifty feet from the shore.
Looking up Jamie saw Hogwarts, illuminating the sky. The candles at the end of the students boats were useless; Hogwarts was all we needed. Constructed with intricate detail, if muggles knew and we're able to see Hogwarts, there was no doubt it would be one of the wonders of the modern world. If the sun had been out the boats would have entered the shadow of the castle hundreds of meters from the actual school.
Jamie looked at the other students and smiled when he saw wonder and shock on their faces.
There was one face that he saw that he remembered. A face of a girl. A few freckles on her face. Brown wavy hair down to the bottom of her chest. Middle parting. She looked over at him. Jamie blushed and instantly looked down.
Jamie felt strange. He had never felt like this before. Maybe he liked her?

Another young boy inhabited the wooden pinnace beside her. It looked as if, without magic, it would teeter violently. In total, five students sat within it's dry interior - five! Their total weight would surely sink the tiny, rickety craft. She could hazard a guess that such boys would be the trouble-makers of her year, the source for all things malicious.
Her eyes scoured their beaming faces - until she came to one: skin light hers, a natural beige, contrasted by a vaguely similar head of dark-coloured hair accompanied by two orbs of grey-like blue eyes which lay within their irises. He was somewhat attractive, in Beatrice's opinion.
She watched as he diverted from maintaining eye contact. Likewise, she had turned her attention onto rowing once again, feeling a hot flush of embarassment smother her cheeks.
Had she done something funny? Had she done something embarrassing or offensive? Or - did he just like her?
She could hear the jeering of the girls behind her - they had obviously noticed the boy looking at her.
The burning of her arms from the exertion of rowing was enough to distract her - but it was ever so rewarding, as every push led to a closer view of the magnificent school. The water gave off a euphoric scent. It reminded her of the seaside, playing on the beach by her parents, her twin sister and her young brother. Even sitting in the boat, she could feel the pesky sand rustling between her toes. She had no doubt that she would sleep soundly tonight.
She was torn what to think about the boy. He seemed adventurous, rebellious, he would certainly a force to be reckoned with.
As they approached the castle, moving ever closer, their pinnaces entered a tunnel system. Beatrice, intrigued by the aspect of going to a School for Wizarding, had researched through the numerous books that she had bought from Diagon Alley. She could recall from books that this was the underground docks of Hogwarts.
Behind her, the accompanying girls squealed. Their shrieks bounced across the walls of the containment, causing a fractured echo. Beatrice let out an laugh. Her mouth turned up into a smile, and her eyes squinted in joy. All feelings of nerve escaped her.
A few minutes later, the ovaluar tunnel opened out into a massive, square room. Drawn to the docks, it took no rowing to enter the harbour. One by one, students were assisted out of their boats by the Prefect from earlier, who ordered them into lines by the stony walls.
“Don't stand there, Rotherham - stand by the wall!”
“Stand by the wall!”
She shakily stood, glad to be on the smooth and flat land, moving towards to entrance of the school. She glanced behind her hastily, desiring to see at least a glimpse of the boy from before.

Jamie didn't know if he liked the girl. He'd never liked anyone before. Since he'd first caught glance of her, his friends had been snickering and now he had two permanent patches on his face.
He looked around for her but she was nowhere to be seen. Jaime didn't know what to think of this. But anyway, he needed to concentrate on the sorting ceremony. But once again his mind was brought back to the girl. What house would she be in? Gryffindor? Or one of the other houses. Jamie hadn't been paying attention he realised the were already in the great hall. There were hundreds of students, thousands of candles that floated in midair and no ceiling, just the sky. There was no food either. No food! Jamie was so shocked, he walked straight into someone. The person turned around and Jamie felt sick, yet exited. It was that girl again. He blushed scatlett and muttered an apology under his breath. Jamie knew she hadn't heard him but he turned away anyway. Suddenly he heard his name.
Jamie Matthews - Dabbard!
Jamie turned around shocked yet not scared anymore. The whole school was looking at him. Better get it done and over with Jamie though and raced to the stool.
Hmm. Well this shouldn't be to hard for me. You don't value knowledge, and your not the best at getting to know people. To be honest in your head is just: brave, daring, resilient. Well I can't see any other option so...
GRYFFINDOR!
Jamie relaxed, and went over to the Gryffindor table, relived.
Then he realized everyone could hear what had been said. He looked at the girl and saw disappointment.
She wasn't going to be in Gryffindor.

Beatrice had been minding her own business, chattering to the two blonde-haired girls - whom she had paired with on the boats - whilst they were on the way to the Great Hall to commence the Sorting Ceremony. They were telling her how they had heard that, last year, a second-year student had fell of their broomstick and remained in the hospital wing for numerous weeks with a three fractured ribs and a broken femur. She felt herself wince in pain from the sheer thought of breaking a bone.
When, out of nowhere, she had been knocked slightly off balance. Beatrice had whipped around, partly in shock, desperate to check if the person who had knocked her was okay. To her surprise, she was met with the face of the boy she knew earlier. But, before she could ask if he was okay, she was interrupted by the holler of the Sorting Hat. It's gruff, harsh tone, calling the name of the boy;
“Jamie Matthews-Dabbard!”
So that was his name, and Gryffindor was to be his house for his years at Hogwarts. She had no time to recollect her thoughts, as after the next couple of students, it was her turn.
“Beatrice Annalise Codde!”
Her nerves had got the better of her: her feet felt as if they were rooted to the ground, her head seeming to be heavy. The entire hall was looking at her. Her heavy steps, she approached the three-legged stool and perched atop it. The hat sat on her head, a weight that held over her eyes.
“A Codde? Ah, I knew your great-great-grandmother. Yes, yes, Miriam Raynott. A good witch, she was.
Let's see. You have kindness and of patience plenty to spare, yet a lull for adventure and a vast extent of courage. A hard-working and dedicated young women, you are. Yet, you are quite athletic and daring.. I would say Gryffindor, but you fit in well in..
Hufflepuff!"
The cheering and the swells erupted at the Hufflepuff table, and Beatrice never felt so welcomed in her life. As she moved towards the Hufflepuff table, she glanced over at the Gryffindor table - the house she could've been.

well, it turns out there was food Jamie thought as he climbed the stone stairs to the boys dormitories. Stuffed he had a laugh with some of the boys in the dormitory. It turned out that the others were very much like him.
But either way everyone wanted to sleep, so Jamie slipped his pyjamas on on got into the bed.
The ceilings were high in the dorm and the walls were stone with beautiful red and gold tapestry and bed lining it. The beds had four poles on each side of them keeping them up. A carpet lay on the floor swallowing most of the wooden floorboards.
Jamie couldn't sleep. Once he realised that he had school tomorrow, Jamie moved and saw defence against the dark arts first. With Hufflepuff. Maybe he would see the girl again. He knew her name now. Beatrice Codde. He wondered if she'd be in the same class. Jaime hoped so. By now he was pretty certain that he liked her but was still confused. She was good looking and must be pretty nice to be a Hufflepuff. Maybe he might never see her again. Jamie didn't like that idea and focused on going to sleep.
