She Wolves
A year ago, her mind was swimming with the nerves and excitement that was attributed to being first years, finally entering their magical education at last. They all had had stars in their eyes, newly polished wands ready for their first flick, and Illowy was no exception. However, that all felt like a lifetime ago. Eleven year old Illowy never had the need to question herself, question her belonging, or even her ability. A year of bullies, a dementor attack, fire outbreaks, and baring witness to a werewolf attack was bound to change a person, as well as change their priorities.
No longer having her art or music as her core focus aside from her studies, her attention was brought to much more important things; strengthening her magic, and looking out for her cousin. Ever since the accident over the summer during Kyle's transformation, the girl had found herself with her nose constantly stuck in books over werewolves, lore and and an array of other topics mostly concerning transfiguration and magical medicines.
Today was no different in that respect as the girl sat out by herself, having made herself quite comfortable by the Great Lake. With her, she had a couple different books open and marked with scraps of parchment, and her sketchbook in her lap with a pen; though the sketchbook had long since been re-purposed to hold the snake's countless thoughts, questions and theories. Her pen twirled nimbly through her fingers as she thought, pouring over one of her books.
The only thing to break her attention was a flash of red hair that caught the corner of her eye, spotting a Gryffindor girl. It only took one flick of her pale eyes up and down the lass to recall her from that night last year when Kyle had been lashing out at everyone within spitting distance. Kyle had gotten the girl pretty good that night, and of course Illowy didn't condone his behavior in the slightest. However hindsight was 20/20 and she couldn't find it in herself to be angry at him about it now.
In the same breath, she could still find fault in the behavior of the others. If they'd just left him alone and just backed off in the first place like he wanted, then maybe everything wouldn't have gotten quite so out of hand. After all, there was no reason it ought to take a Slytherin to break up a pride of Gryffindors.
A rabid animal. That was what the ginger girl had called him. Yelling and screaming until half the school was looking at them. How the bloody hell was that suppose to help anything at all?
Illowy didn't let her gaze on the girl linger long as she dropped her eyes back to her book, tucking a bit of long, dark hair behind her ear as she tried to find her concentration, and the line she'd left off at, once more. Hopefully she'd be lucky and the other would take a sharp turn some other direction.

I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

[quote]Second year. Second year. Marla Quinlan was in her second year of Hogwarts. And oh, how it flew by so fast. Even between having to clean up blood from the infamous toilet bomb, getting clocked in the face, and smacking someone in the face with a broom... Which all featured Kyle Derook. She was noticing a pattern. But in the midst all of that mess, it really wasn't too bad. She had met Ruby Cazares, someone who she had truly bonded with from the minute they met. She found a passion for her schoolwork, took stride in something other than scribbling marker on the walls or inconveniencing people she didn't like. And it felt good. She had a purpose. She wasn't aimlessly walking around a mansion looking for something to do.
Smiling to herself, Marla skipped out into the sweet outdoors for once without a book. Crazy, right? Maybe the fact that she had spent a whole year away from almost any of her family was rubbing off of her because the Gryffindor was practically bouncing off the walls. How could she not? She was proving her family wrong. She was able to make her way through school with an O average without any help. Not to mention, she was a prefect now. And they just thought she was some worthless speck on their questionable family tree.
Triumphant she was, for a look ever so smug was plastered onto her face as she plopped down near the glistening etchings of the lake. Even with being so small and sitting down, Marla held herself up high. At this very moment, she felt as if she could take anything the world had hurdling towards her. Whether it was some annoying kid, or a literal asteroid about to destroy Earth... She could definitely not handle it.
Aaand something else that she couldn't handle, looking up to see a familiar pair of piercing, bright blue eyes. The self-approving glint in her eyes was gone in an instant as she gazed at the pale figure. A fiery storm was raging in her eyes as she stared intently upon Marla. The color drained from her face as she finally recognized her. She was there. That– that day. A chill went done her spine as the air around her became icey cold, her eyes wide, resembling a deer in the headlights. Whoever this girl was, she cared about Kyle. And he cared about her. Even though it was just under a year ago, the girl definitely seemed to not be over Marla screaming all of those horrid things at him.
She scrambled to her feet, fists clenched so tight that her knuckles were white with a purple tint. Her lip quivered as the Slytherin marched closer. Should she say something? What if she was just passing by? Yeah, no. It was pretty obvious she was marching towards Marla. What to do... What to do... In a panic and awkward flurry, she started walking towards the pale girl as well.
"Can I help you?" She asked flatly, in an attempt to show no emotion. This girl was probably out for blood, but just in case she wasn't, it couldn't hurt to play it cool, right?

The girl shifted uncomfortably, as if physically feeling how torn she was between giving the other a piece of her mind, and simply letting it go as it was. After all, there was no reason to dig up old bones. At least that was what she tried to tell herself before giving up as she closed her book and gathered her things in her bag and got to her feet, starting towards the lion.
Though her expression was anything less then stone, and eyes full of intent, her mind was churning, wand twirling effortlessly through her fingers. At one point, she had truly made up her mind to simply drop it... that was until the other got to her own feet and started towards her as well. The advance was all the girl needed to switch her mind back to confrontation.
Cold eyes analyzed the girl, taking in everything from her forced, blank expression, to how her fists were clenched, to the tone of her voice that solidified in Illowy's mind that she'd already managed to get under the other's skin.
Sharp, blunt, and to the point; typical Illowy style. She and her cousin were the same in a lot of ways, mostly in their temper and sharp tongues. However, Illowy liked to think that she was a lot more eloquent in expressing her rage then Kyle. Though if anyone ever actually watched the pair of them in one of their full on fights, it was clear the pair were two side of the same coin.
Illowy couldn't help but harbor some resentment towards Marla for that night; partially for not maintaining control over the situation, and partially for not just leaving him to himself when he asked. Surely, how many times had he demanded to be left alone before the snake had come along. Just as well, why did it take a Slytherin of all people to break up a fight between Gryffindors? Of course, she certainly didn't agree that Marla needed to be hit over it, no one should have been hurt over it; but Illowy couldn't help but feel slightly that they'd brought it on themselves when they realized Kyle's rage was more then usual. At the very least, one of them could have gotten a teacher. The teachers knew about Kyle, they could have handled it.
That must've seemed to simple though.
"Marla Quinlan, right? I don't forget a face." the brunette have a slight tilt of her head, watching the girl keenly.

Illowy's twirling wand came to an abrupt stop, as though she'd finished thinking through this bought of mental chess already. A cunning smirk tugged at the edge of her lips, "Not right now." she assured, eyes flickering up and down the girl, "Mind, if I ever find myself in need of being cornered for a puerile, empty-minded tongue lashing, I'll be sure to give you a call.""Can I help you?"

[quote]Illowy Magnard was a familiar name, and a familiar face. She would remember those icy blues anywhere, whether she simply encountered the girl while walking through the halls or if they were the last thing she was to ever see. Her lip twitched a scowl threatening to form on her face. God, and on the one day that she was feeling relatively okay. She rolled her eyes, pursing her lips. It was obvious that Illowy Magnard wasn't here to get buddy buddy.
Confirming her suspicions, Illowy made a remark, that frankly, flared the girl up like a fire. She was bringing this up? Now? Her eyes went from a golden brown to nearly black, a crimson glare of anger reflecting off of the pupil. So, she wanted to play that game? Marla was no stranger to it. "Ay, says the useless little shite," She spelled out every syllable slowly, stepping closer, a spark in her eyes that certainly wasn't there previously. "What in the world did ye' do tah help that was...So immensely more mature and honorable of yeh? Please, enlighten me," She asked, her words sharp and aggressive, in an attempt to hide the cracks as she recalled that day. The incident was nearly a year ago, and even the thought of it still put goosebumps on her skin.
It was nearly a year ago, and the fact that this girl was relighting an old flame didn't do her any justice. She clicked her tongue, looking at the ground. It brought her more relief than she could imagine that there were no tears welling in her eyes. Whether it was because she and Kyle made up, or because it was so long ago... That didn't matter. Marla Quinlan had dealt with a hell of a lot worse than a petty Slytherin who thought she was better than everyone who existed. If anything, this would be a positive experience to put the snake in her place.
Marla wasn't exactly surprised that Illowy had remembered her name. After a while of being in school, she had remembered the girl's name due to being in a few classes with her. She crossed her arms, mockingly tilting her head in the same manner as the girl. "And you're Illowy Magnard? You are a bit shabby... I'm surprised I didn't forget you." That...Was a lie. While she was so pale that she could pass as a corpse, that certainly did not mean she wasn't beautiful. In fact, she reminded her of a porcelain doll.
"What the hell do you want?" She asked bluntly, feeling her face heating up with loathing. She took a sharp inhale, grabbing her arm tightly, as a reminder to not lose her temper. "Ah know ye didn't come ovah here to be my friend. Spit it out already."

Illowy was a book worm; and as a girl with libraries here as well as home at her disposal. Which left her armed with many different skills. Among them was her honed ability to read people like one of her books. From the girl's stance, to how her muscles tensed, how her accent thickened, to even the slight way her lip curled as she growled her pitiful insults, nothing was left analyzed.
Thus far, Illowy's conclusion of this girl was that it was easy to get under her skin and she used her physical stature to intimidate. The snake had no illusion that if the lion wanted to lay her own flat, she very well could. After all the girl was rather small and thin, courtesy of years of dance and ballet; but Illonwy was a Slytherin, she was clever and cunning, and words could hit deeper then a blade, "What did I do? Well, I ended the fight didn't I?" she smirked, "While you were off shooting your mouth off with insults, much like now, I was the only one behaving calmly and rationally until everyone went their separate ways." her tone remained cold, though with a slightly mocking rise to it, as though she knew something Marla didn't.
The girl continued with her questions and petty insults, all of which hardly even fazed the brunette, "Its a cryin' shame. Some people truly don't change. Or frankly learn to control themselves." she spoke, giving a gentle tilt of her head and a raise of her brows, her gaze drifting off to the side a moment as she shrugged, "But either way," she continued, bringing her icy hues back to the girl, "you're not wrong. I've no interest in your friendship, not that you'd have much to offer anyway. I just want to give you a sweet tidbit to take along with you."
Her smirk tugged a bit at her lips as she dared to take a step closer, "D'not fuck with the people I love." she allowed her own accent, typically kept in check from getting to thick, to slip onto her tongue, "Especially, Kyle. Because you will regret it." Illowy tone fell low and dark, eyes practically trying to pierce into the lion's very soul before she took her step back once more, "Am I understood?"
