Ever since she’d taken that potion… well, Matilde had known it was a bad idea. But she was so curious. At the time, not taking it hadn’t felt like an option. Now, chaos seemed to be insuring inside Hufflepuff house, the nature of which Matilde didn’t really understand. Like the rest of her housemates, at first the girl felt good. All her worries about her friendship with Phelan and the weird things she couldn’t help but know faded away. But not too long after, she had begun to feel miserable.

Trying to take her mind off things, the girl headed to the study room to get some work done, at the very least. It was the last thing she felt like doing.

Matilde chose a desk in the corner of the room. There were many other students already here. She twirled her quill between her finger and thumb, still rather distracted. Then something caught her eye. Like a crow attracting to shiny things, the young witch leaned over the desk to see what it was. A little green bracelet poked out from the top of the bag on the floor in front of her. Matilde felt as if she were in a trace, as she reached down and closed her fingers around the thing…
OOC note: this thread is part of the mysterious potion task. Open to interactions (outside of Hufflepuff for the purpose of the task) react to Matilde’s shenanigans how you will.

Avis bent her head over her History of Magic essay, her eyes starting to blur from the strain of staring at her small handwriting for so long. She’d been in the study room for what seemed like hours and her growling stomach told her the same tale. It was time to pack up.

The Ravenclaw glanced up at the clock on the wall near the door but as she squinted to see the time, movement out if the corner of her eye distracted her. Turning her head slightly, Avis watched in a confused daze as the Hufflepuff next to her reached forward and snatched something from the unattended bag at the desk in front of them. Avis furrowed her eyebrows, giving the thief a sidelong glance. Did she have the energy to say something? What if it was her bag or a friend’s? Avis shrugged to herself, making a decision. She didn’t know the girl and hopefully wouldn’t see her often afterwards anyways.

Pst,” she hissed at the redhead. A few students glanced up at the sound but went back to their studying moments later. “Whose bag is that?” she whispered, carefully molding her face into an expression of mild disinterest. The girl didn’t want to seem too accusatory if it actually was hers, but something about the way the girl had snagged it had put Avis on edge.

The bracelet’s beads dug into Matilde’s palm, and only then did she realized how tightly she was squeezing it. She released a bit of the pressure, but didn’t dare open her hand to take another look at the thing. Only later would she marvel at what was going on in her mind in this moment.

The girl sitting next to Matilde glanced at her suspiciously, then whispered something to another girl. Matilde looked up, but didn’t recognize either of the girls. The one who’d spoken was a dark haired Ravenclaw who must have been a first year. Matilde’s eyes widened when she realized the Ravenclaw seemed to have noticed her little stunt with the bracelet. The Hufflepuff nervously put her hand into her pocket. She considered her options carefully, or as much as she could. With potion coursing through her made her feel as if it were harder to think. Was it possible that she really hadn’t noticed, and Matilde was being paranoid? If she had seen her, would the girl say something to Matilde if she just acted normal? Or she could just go back to the common room and hope she forgot it ever happened. Matilde frowned, locked in her moment of indecision.

This girl was not acting normal. Avis noticed her slip her hand nervously into her pocket and she narrowed her eyes.

After the girl in front of her had offered no clarifying help, Avis supposed she could just mind her own business… but unfortunately, curiosity had taken hold. She turned to the supposed thief next to her.

Just so you know, I saw you take that bracelet,” she whispered, waiting for the girl to defend herself or something. She hadn’t exactly been discreet after all. It’s not like she could play it off. The initial disbelief was beginning to wear off and Avis couldn’t help but start to think what in Merlin’s Beard had possessed her to steal something so small and useless. Then again, she’d never met the second year before. Perhaps blatant lying and stealing was simply just there according to some people’s morals, no right nor wrong about it.

Avis studied the Hufflepuff’s face as she waited for an answer. The girl’s eyes were unfocused and seemed almost… glazed over? The Ravenclaw furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. Something was not right.

The day was narrowing down, and so was Andy's patience. Spring was starting, and on top of Quidditch practices, Andy had homework. A LOT of homework. It almost feels like he is spending more time in the study room than all of his class time COMBINED. As the restless boy trudged into the room, he noticed two girls. One of them had a history of magic essay, and the other one stole something that looked lie a bracelet. There where a couple seats open in the section the girls where sitting in, so he took a seat next to them. Are you guys also tired? I have this pile of homework to finish... Please tell me that I am not the only one who is as tired as me... Said Andy as he opened a book from History of magic and scanned the pages for information, which was starting to turn into a very bad habit. Hogwarts is good and all, but the homework amount is crazy... not even close to the amount that my old private school back in Perth used to give... The only thing that kept the boy motivated was dinner and lunch time, so he started working through the pile of papers, books, and parchment. This is torture...

She had seen her.

Matilde felt panic rising in her chest. What was she going to do? How could she explain this? She could say she was just taking a look at it, she was going to put it back. But was that really true?

The girl was broken from her thoughts by the entrance of a boy, who abruptly sat next to her and the other girl. Matilde stared at him blankly as he began to lament his homework load. She rolled her eyes at the boy, not really trying to be discreet about her intentions. Honestly. So sorry, Matilde is really in a mood Then she turned back to the girl.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she said, rather loudly. People sitting near looked up from their studies, more than a few giving her dirty looks.

“And I don’t see how it’s your business, anyway,” she hissed, more quietly this time. With that, Matilde got up from her chair, grabbing her bag roughly. She stormed out of the room.

Matilde ran all the way back to her dorm in Hufflepuff. Only then did she come to her senses in the slightest bit. Matilde began to cry. What had she just done? Stealing, lying, and yelling at that poor girl who was trying to do the right thing by calling her out. It was very out of character for the usually sweet girl. Was she having a breakdown? This was all because of that stupid, stupid potion.
Matilde exits the thread but feel free to post more if you want!

Avis watched as panic rose in the girl’s eyes, surprised perhaps at her discovery. A boy approached and said something about homework but Avis was too busy trying to figure this thief out. Her curiosity piqued, she raised an eyebrow at the girl’s blatant (and loud) denial.

That’s ridiculous. We both know it’s sitting in your pocket right now,” Avis retorted. She’d definitely stolen it, the Ravenclaw was sure. Her reaction to being caught was exposing her earlier action as theft, not simply borrowing a friend’s piece of jewelry or snatching something from her own bag. Avis narrowed her eyes. A thief and a liar? She didn’t like it one bit.

Her anger flared at the girl’s next sentence. Before she could get out a reply, the Hufflepuff had stormed out of the room, her own bag in tow. Avis huffed, sliding back down into her chair and crossing her arms. Really, she should’ve never meddled but she couldn’t just sit there while someone stole in front of her.

Avis’ stomach growled loudly and one of the students who’d looked over earlier glanced back again. The Ravenclaw shot her a poisonous look and the girl’s face went bright red as she whipped back around in her seat.

Sighing, Avis cleared her desk and stashed her unfinished essay into her satchel. Hanger was taking over.

Slinging the bag over her shoulder, the girl marched out of the room. She made her way to the Great Hall, hoping to forget all about the unfortunate situation in the Study Room after a good sandwich.

And yet, there was still something so odd about the thief that lingered in the back of her mind, something she couldn’t quite put a finger on…

Right when Andy entered the room, the anger started. The girl who "Stole" [in words of Avis]the bracelet stormed out of the room, and so did Avis, leaving Andy and a few other kids to be stranded here. Andy was a but hungry, so heading to lunch was a good idea, but he had homework to do, and lunch ends in a couple hours. He sat down, groaned, and forced himself into finishing every las page until he started begging his body for mercy. He really needed SOME sort of food. As he picked up his empty bottle of ink he used and threw it into the trash and picked up his quill and washed off, he noticed that it was already the end of lunch time, and he had a class in a couple minutes. GREAT. Right after hours of studying, he has to go to his least favorite class. 5 hours until dinner. The most miserable 5 hours of Andy's life. This was not like back at home, where you ask for food, and your private chef cooks it for you...It was really getting close to the class time, so Andy exited the study room, and slowly walked out of the place. What a great way to spend your lunch time...
