Eldred made an effort to regain control of his cheeks and ears while Sebastian went to fetch water. Fortunately, he managed to calm them down somewhat. His cheeks turned from red to a light pink, and his ears faded into a peachy color.
Taking advantage of the brief moment of peace and solitude, Eldred processed his emotions. The idiot wasn‘t worth breaking his head over! He didn’t deserve it; anyone could be born good-looking, that didn’t mean anything. The boy scrunched his nose and decided to focus on the task at hand.
Eldred reached into the soil and first tried to scoop out a little bit and drop it into one of the pots. It missed the pot more than it went in. Before Sebastian arrived at the table, Eldred grabbed the bag entirely and tried to pour its contents into one of the pots. He tapped it lightly, shook it up and down, and tried to rattle the soil out as elegantly as possible, without making his gloves dirtier.
Then, Sebastian leaned in close. It almost broke Eldred's concentration. Thank Merlin, it only almost did and not fully!
"Yeah, I know that."
He responded a little more quietly and continued to focus as much as possible on the task. The bag was shaken up and down again. A clump seemed to be blocking the hole at the bottom.
"I don’t mind dirt!" Eldred defended himself and mumbled quietly.
To emphasize the point, he shook the bag hard! The clump fell out, across the pot, and onto the table. It broke apart into a pile of dirt. Eldred inhaled sharply, his eyes wide open, and the now freed end of the sack let the full force of its contents spill.
Soil emptied across the pot, filled it, and left the rest gathering next to the pot on the old tabl, all the way to Eldred‘s sleeves.
It was all a mess. A few students giggled quietly and then quickly refocused on their own pots. Others glanced up and then immediately looked back down.
Only Eldred stared at the mess, perplexed.
"..you know." He took a deep breath, and in a moment of unnatural calm, he turned his head toward Sebastian. All the redness had disappeared from his cheeks and ears and was replaced with a pale color
Eldred smiled.
"...I might not be good at gardening…"

"Mhm. Right..." Sebastian said with a hum, clearly skeptical when the other boy said that he didn't mind dirt. Everything except his words spoke for it. As if to prove his point, Eldred shook the bag of soil and ended up making a total mess all over the table. "Well, at least the pots are filled." He shrugged, smirking and biting back a laugh, compared to the students around them who watched the scene and burst into quiet giggles.
Luckily it was already quite dirty, but it ended up on their robes as well. In the beginning he'd hated these generic school robes, finding them far too bland for his tastes, which usually was nothing less than famous designer brands, but right now he saw the purpose beyond style--- or more accurately: the lack thereof.
It didn't matter so much that his robes were now speckled with soil. At least his fancy clothes didn't get ruined, he thought and started brushing off the excess dirt on the table while Eldred was fighting his demons. In this case, dirt and pots.
After all this, the boy could admit defeat and that he was not that great at gardening. Sebastian was inclined to agree with him. "That's why I'm here." Sebastian smiled back and took a step closer until they were standing next to each other, brushing shoulders. Using his gloved hands to smooth out the surface in the pots, he brushed the rim of the pot clean and started digging carefully measured dips, leaving the simple task of just putting the roots inside for the other boy.
"Whatever would you have done without me," he pretended to swoon over himself. Just to tease, of course.

Eldred set the now empty sack on the table and pulled both hands off the surface. The fact that the Man-Drake didn’t laugh surprised him. He had already prepared himself for the other person to laugh loudly at him.
The fact that there was also decency hidden behind the pretty face bothered him in a strange way. It made Eldred wish Sebastian had laughed. Maybe then he wouldn’t feel so confused about the entire situation. Sebastian’s behavior was simply contrary to what Eldred expected from an arrogant asshole. How annoying. Did something have to be hidden behind that handsome face, something that isn’t just superficial nonsense? By Merlin, he is annoying.
The boy squinted and peered from the corner of his eye at the other. He silently observed as Sebastian wiped the dirt off his school uniform. Unconsciously, Eldred pulled his hands toward his own and started shaking off the bigger clumps of dirt too.
Eldred had no trouble admitting fault or his weaknesses. His self-confidence was strong enough to consider it an important part of his life. That’s what his mother liked to say, when she had long, melancholic talks about her next book.
Somehow it felt reassuring that Sebastian casually confirmed Eldred‘s weakness. It wouldn’t make sense to lie to Eldred and appeal to him based on good faith! The boy didn‘t appreciate liars. Then the other stepped closer, and suddenly Eldred felt his shoulder brush against his.
It made him a bit nervous all over again Uncomfortable , too, but Eldred remained calm, attributing it to the discomfort that came when hugging a stranger.
Of course, they weren’t hugging right now—but it was similar, right?
He didn’t need much explanation to know what was going to happen next. As attentively as possible, he watched as Sebastian’s movements seemed far more elegant and precise than his own. When the hole was uncovered, Eldred only placed the two roots in both pots and shoveled them over.
That should mean they are done with their task!
Eldred looked at Sebastian. His eyes landed again on his jaw, nose, mouth, and eyes before he heard the words. Of course, they were arrogant, but Eldred didn’t want to fall for the whole cat-and-mouse game. He didn’t want Sebastian to annoy him that easily.
Still, his ears turned red because inside, Eldred’s feelings swirled, mixing anger at arrogance with relief that the Man-Drake had somehow saved him—at least with gardening. He still got dirty, after all.
“Yes, yes. Of course. Oh, my hero, can I still get an autograph?” Eldred rolled his eyes, but a smile spread across his face. „Thanks“
