Lost And Found
Backdated to: 07 september 2024
It was the Saturday morning after the Sorting Ceremony, and Syrah was walking along the second-floor corridor, her hands full of books she had borrowed from the library, though she wasn’t exactly sure how she had ended up there in the first place. Her goal had been the library.
The noise didn’t bother her, but it certainly didn’t interest her either. She was walking slowly, her eyes slightly narrowed as she tried to make sense of the stone walls around her, each hallway seemingly identical to the last. The books she carried were clutched tightly in her arms.
Her black robes dragged a little as she walked. She brushed it away impatientlys.
Syrah didn’t want to ask for help. She never did. It wasn’t because she felt too proud to admit she didn’t know where she was going; it was simply that she didn’t see the point in involving others. The students milling about were of no consequence to her, and their pity or mockery would be a waste of time to endure. She preferred to figure things out on her own.
Where did I go wrong? she thought, shifting the books from one arm to the other. She really hadn’t meant to get lost. She had just been thinking about the Sorting, and how... unimportant it had felt in the end. What difference did it make? She hadn’t been excited.

Lost And Found
Rachel had been walking to get a better view of the school after all, she had only just gotten there the night before. Her hair more of a mess then ever. The place was huge; much bigger then even her books seemed to assume. The hallways seemed to go on forever, and the entire place was covered in paintings that moved near constantly.
That mixed with the constantly moving stairs made her feel like shed get lost just exploring one floor, much less getting from class to class in a decent amount of time.
Rachel started to quicken her pace between a brisk walk and a skip, because walking felt like she was getting nowhere. She wasnt really paying any attention, the air around her cold, and empty. This pace only went well for a while before she tripped as she turned the corridor, only being able to stop as a huge crash of books hit the ground. Her face lit up with embarrassment as she heard the crash nearly stopping in her tracks.
"Oh my gosh. Im so sorry- I didnt know you were there- Here let me help!" She reached down to pick up some of the books. "Were..you carrying **all** of these by yourself? I can help!" She hid her nerves behind a smile.
"I.. Cant believe how big this place is. It seems like anyone could get lost here in moments. Im trying to spend the next few days just getting to know my surroundings before classes start..i wouldnt even begin knowing were to go." She said as she lifted back to her feet with the books in hand.

Lost And Found
Syrah stood still, her posture rigid as the girl hurried to gather the fallen books. She watched in silence, annoyance passing through her eyes. It wasn’t that she couldn’t have picked them up herself, she just hadn’t expected someone to come barreling around the corner like that.
Her fingers tightened around the books she was handed, hugging them close to her chest. She glanced down, noting the slight bend in one of the corners. A sigh almost escaped her lips, but she caught it.
“Careful next time,” she said, her voice steady but not unkind. There was no point in lashing out; she’d only look foolish for standing in the middle of the corridor like a lost child. Which, in a way, she was.
She was definitely in the wrong place, and she hated that she’d have to admit it. But after wandering in circles for what felt like hours, it was clear she wasn’t getting to the library on her own.
Finally, she glanced at the girl from the corner of her eye. “You wouldn’t happen to know the way to the library, would you?” The question came out stiffer than she intended, but it was the best she could manage.
She waited, her fingers nervously tapping against the spine of a book. Her shoulders were tense, her head slightly bowed, not enough to look defeated, but just enough to avoid the other girl’s gaze.

Lost And Found
As Rachel noticed the other girl's tension, she assumed the girl was shy. A soft breeze from down the hall, as a slight bit of light gracefully shone in from the top of the corridor. The light lighting the floor's cracks and clearly began to show the lining of each brick which had began to crack overtime.
"Well.. Im not positive which hallway exactly, but i do remember it being on the ground floor next to the grand hall. I had noticed a sign for it after the feast as we were going towards the hufflepuff dorms." She explained, trying to be as helpful as she could. "I'll go with you! This will give me a chance to check out another book on mythical creatures. I just love them!" She said gleefully starting to make her way towards the stairs basically uninvitedly.
"Can you believe how big this place is? I wonder how long it will be before **I** get lost. At this point its the blind leading the blind!" She giggled trying to make the other girl laugh. "Are you alright? You seem a bit.. Nervous..no thats not it. I cant get a good read on it.." She said stepping ahead. "Do you want help; if you want i can carry a few for you! They look..heavy." She said turning back to look at the other girl with a gleeful smile.
"Sorry if im being a bit yappy- oh crap i forgot to introduce myself didnt I, Its Rachel. Rachel Blank, im in Hufflepuff. But you probably noticed that.. I mean.. Yellow band- sorry. I like your hair. Its Pretty! So what kind of books do you like to read?" Rachel said continuing her rambling, her thoughts hopping from one to another barely giving the other girl time to breathe. She was just excited to talk to more people, she didnt assume shed be hanging with anyone else much less having a conversation. She spun back to look in front again her hair swaying in the wind the action caused as she waited for a response.

Lost And Found
Syrah stared at the girl, eyes narrowing slightly as the girl prattled on, her words tumbling out like an overflowing cauldron. She watched her skip ahead, the yellow band on her robes catching the light. It was almost blinding. Of course, she’s Hufflepuff. Figures.
The thought almost made Syrah smile, almost.
She kept her eyes on the cracked stone floor, counting the bricks as she moved, hoping the girl would take the hint and stop talking. No such luck.
Words tumbled from the girl’s mouth in a never-ending stream. How could someone have so much to say about absolutely nothing?
The comment about getting lost earnedannoyance across Syrah’s face. “I’m not lost,” she said, the words sharper than she intended. “I just… took a wrong turn.”
Her patience finally snapped when the girl tried to read her.
“Nervous?” Syrah’s head shot up, her cold blue-gray eyes narrowing. “I’m not nervous,” she said, voice sharp, the words biting. “Just because I’m not yapping like a crup on a sugar high doesn’t mean I’m nervous.” She looked away, shoulders stiff, her gaze drifting back to the floor. “Some people just know how to keep their thoughts to themselves.”
The girl barely faltered, launching right into another topic, Hufflepuff. Syrah rolled her eyes, her shoulders sagging with irritation. “Yeah, I noticed. Yellow isn’t exactly subtle.” Her tone was dripping with sarcasm, lips curled into a faint, mocking smile.
The questions kept coming, one after another, never leaving enough space for silence. Syrah didn’t bother answering.
When the girl finally took a breath, Syrah’s lips twisted into a irritated frown. She shot a glance toward the girl, her voice icy but controlled. “Syrah.” The word came out flat, almost dismissive, as she ignored the question about the books. Wasn’t it obvious? She was carrying nothing but books on dark arts, rituals, and old magic. What else would someone with common sense expect her to read?
She just wanted to get to the library. Was that really too much to ask?

Lost And Found
The air around seemed to fill with extremely clear tension, nearly enough to be cut through with a knife. Unfortunately for Syrah, Rachel was clearly either oblivious or ignoring it.
"..you realize youre on the wrong **floor** right? I mean its okay to be lost. Its a huge place, you dont have to be upset about it. I swear i wont think any less of you." Rachel smiled at Syrah once again, finally noticing an annoyed expression.
"I know. I feel annoyed the the huge walking too. You know. You kinda remind me of a Hippogriff. That a complement, theyre top 10 fav beast ever." She said as the she walked down the corridor slowing slightly to let the other catch up. Walking passed another window, a arch of light shone onto the cracks yet again a cobweb or two nessled into the corner of the floor and ground.
"Nervous was the wrong word.. Im not good with words really. Maybe uh. Prideful? No.. Thats not it either. Independant. Yeah i think that fits the best, maybe not the perfect word but.. Anyway." Rachel started to look at the books themselves,
"Defense against the dark arts a favorite with how many dark magic books you have. I can really apprecate it; Its one of my most looked forward too classes." She said looking at one of paintings.
"Dont you find it cool that the paintings move all on their own!!" She smiled tilting her head a bit. "You know. Youre kind of a quiet type... I can respect that. I dont mind talking enough for the both of us. " She continued making small talk as she walked. Mostly talking about nonsense, but every now and then asking a few questions here and there. Clearly trying to make pleasant conversation.
As she walked, she started to walk with more pep starting to skip again, making sure to watch where she was going this time.

Lost And Found
Syrah let out a quiet, sharp breath through her nose. The comparison to a Hippogriff caught her off guard. What in Merlin’s name was that supposed to mean? Her lips twitched, and for a brief, fleeting moment, she was almost amused. "Dont you find it cool that the paintings move all on their own!!"
Syrah barely suppressed an eye roll. Of course, she found it cool. Who didn’t? But she wasn’t about to feed into this girl’s endless chatter.
The Hufflepuff showed no sign of stopping. She just kept going, her voice light and cheerful, bouncing around the corridor with a sickening amount of enthusiasm. Syrah’s shoulders tensed. It was like being pecked at by a hyperactive Pygmy Puff.
"You know. Youre kind of a quiet type... I can respect that. I dont mind talking enough for the both of us. "
Syrah’s lip twitchedr. “Clearly,” she drawled, her voice flat. “You’re doing a remarkable job at it.”
Rachel’s voice bounced off the wallss. Syrah clenched her teeth. She’d been called many things, cold, unfeeling, distant, but never “quiet.”
Quiet suggested meekness, a lack of confidence. It suggested that she was timid, afraid. That wasn’t it at all. Quiet suggested she had nothing to say. The truth was, she simply had nothing she wanted to share. Not with her, not with anyone.
She felt the girl’s gaze on her, curious and bright. And it took every ounce of Syrah’s patience not to snap at her. Why did she care so much? Why was she still talking?
“If you’re trying to fill the silence,” she said, her voice smooth and icy, “you’re succeeding. Spectacularly.”

Lost And Found
The footsteps the girls took started to become more prominent for a few moments as the chatter started to dwindle, it paused for a full 30 seconds before starting up again.
"Thank you!" Rachel said gleefully, making sure to match Syrah's pace to a tee. Before continuing on about some chapter in a book she had been reading. Her mind was wondering a lot, talking about dragons and their favorite den sites, then moving on to why sphynx's asked so many questions, then somehow making it to kelpies and why you should never touch one cuz they will trap you on their skin. It seemed to pick up again worse then ever.
Now Rachel didnt realize how annoying she was likely being; she thought for sure the other was just shy, perhaps wanting a new friend but not knowing how to speak; and when i tell you she absolutely gonna make sure that Syrah knew Rachel saw her as a friend. She was gonna. Though she was most likely unknowingly doing the opposite.
Somehow the conversation managed to work its way into dark magic.
"Say. You like dark magic, right. Whats your favorite spells?" She said taking a while to look at Syrah again. They had finally gotten to the stairs by this point, Rachel obviously let Syrah go first to be polite. The stairs were creeky, yet sturdy. This didnt stop Rachel from lightly gripping the rails just to keep balance, she was still getting used to walking in such long robes. Keeping an eye on the ground as they walked, she didnt wanna miss a stair and end up falling again; she didnt think even she would forgive anyone who fell ontop of her down a flight of stairs. The sounds of the footsteps filling the air a bit more as she listened.

Lost And Found
Syrah’s eyes flicked sideways at Rachel, her expression as impassive as ever. s. It wasn’t that she minded people talking—Baba Zoya talked all the time, and Syrah never got tired of her stories. But this? This was different. Rachel’s voice was too cheerful, too persistent, too...much. It buzzed like a fly she couldn’t swat away, bouncing from one topic to the next without a breath in between.
Syrah’s silence wasn’t because she was shy. Far from it. She could talk for hours with Baba Zoya about old folktales and spells or with Nicolai. She used to chatter endlessly with her mother about the garden, the flowers, the birds...until her mother stopped answering.
It was just that Rachel’s words meant nothing. They were filler, noise with no purpose or meaning. Dragons and sphynxes and kelpies, Rachel’s words jumped around without a care, refusing to settle long enough for Syrah to catch on. It made her head spin. If she opened her mouth, she feared something sharp and unkind would come out, so she kept it shut. It was better that way.
Then Rachel asked about dark magic.
Syrah’s steps faltered for just second before she continued down the stairs. It was rare for anyone to ask her about that so bluntly.
Her fingers tightened slightly around the worn covers of the books she was carrying. The spines were cracked from use, titles embossed in faded gold lettering: Hexes and Curses: A Historical Perspective, Shadows of the Arcane: An Advanced Study of Dark Spells, and The Art of Blood Magic. She hadn’t exactly been subtle.
Favorite spell? The thought almost made her scoff.
How could she have a favorite spell when she barely knew any?
Sure, she’d read about them. In great detail, in fact. She could recite incantations, list ingredients for potions that would make even seasoned wizards raise their eyebrows, and explain the complex theory behind curses that were forbidden to even speak of. But knowing the theory wasn’t the same as casting them.
A small, bitter feeling twisted in her chest. She didn’t have a favorite spell because she hadn’t earned the right to one. Not yet, at least. Baba Zoya always said that power meant nothing if you couldn’t wield it. Words and wand movements were just that, words and movements. Without the magic to back them up, they were as useless as ink on a page.
Syrah’s voice cut through the air, soft but firm. “I don’t have one.”
Syrah’s eyes flicked to the side, catching a glimpse of Rachel’s expectant face before snapping back forward. “Just because I read about it doesn’t mean I have a favorite,” she replied coolly. “And even if I did, I wouldn’t be stupid enough to try it.”
Her tone was sharp, almost accusatory.
They continued down the stairs in silence, their footsteps echoing off the stone walls. Syrah’s eyes drifted to the cobwebs nestled in the corners, their delicate threads shimmering in the pale light.
After a moment, she spoke again, her voice quiet, almost reluctant. “The theory is... interesting,” she admitted. “The way magic can be shaped, twisted... It’s like a puzzle. If you understand how it works, you can do almost anything.”
She didn’t look at Rachel as she spoke, her eyes fixed on the path ahead. It was the most she’d said all day, and she already regretted it.

Rachel listened; truthful she had no clue about anything related to dark magic. Or the diffrence between dark, and light magic, she assumed it was magic that happened in the dark, perhaps Astrology spells, maybe something like moving shadows. Either way; the "Im not stupid enough to try it" made her question what it was even more.
"..So you like puzzles too?" Rachel said starting to think more rather then speak. Weither she had run out of things to say, or if by some outside force had changed it. "Though i think the ones we like are diffrent. Im not exactly **good** at them as much as i just like them." She said continuing down the stairs. It had finally caught on she probably had been talking too much, and she wanted to give Syrah a chance to speak.
Though something sent her back to her childhood; when she was way younger and her mother actually had time to spend with her. They would put together puzzles; sitting down with some hot cocoa during the winter next to the fireplace. The soft crackle of fire as she put the pieces together. But it wasnt just jigsaw puzzles, sometimes they would think up riddles and ridiculus questions with ridiculous answers. That all stopped once they had moved to England.
The smile washed away from her face for a bit before she shook it off and continued walking. It felt like the staircase had been going forever, and silence filled the air for a good while except for the quiet footsteps till they reached the ground floor.
"I think i see it over there." she with an unreadable expression; her eyes shifting from the ground to the left of them. A old weathered sign "Library" hanging from the roof.
