Sabrina ran.

She was still crying, still in pieces over Zyair backing out on her, abandoning her at the ball. The ball. The moment in time she'd imagined when she met the handsome- No! She couldn't think of him like that! Traitorous boy. There, much better.

She found herself outside the castle in what she assumed were the grounds. The only feeling was the pain in her chest. Sabrina was numb, overwhelmed by the undying sense of heartbreak. Her kindhearted feelings for Zyair were gone. Dead.

Her dress was dirty around the hem from where it had touched the ground, but she didn't care. She didn't care about the forming blisters on her feet, because she was too melancholy to feel anything else. Her first crush, crushed by the boy himself. How ironic. It was so ironic, that Sabrina found herself on the ground, sobbing into her knees.

How could he have done this?

How did anyone have the heart- or therefore lack of heart- to do this?

The only thing Sabrina could think to do was scream. So she did. It was a long, bellowing scream. It was for everything she'd lost, everything she'd gained. She wanted to scream to high heaven. Why did she deserve this? Why, why, was the only question in her, the only feeling besides the pulsing pain beating through her.

And all she could think was, why must I suffer this pain?

"I'm still kinda peeved that Emi made me make up with Casey." Scout mumbled, voice soft. Her and Zyair had just spent the better half of the last hour chatting with the two about everything that had gone on the past week, as well as some other sparse information any could remember. This was a big event happening, and Zyair was just glad to be spending it doing something meaningful rather than dancing around and all that. "But I guess there was no way for us to continue this investigation, you know with everything that happened in the last few days and with Casey's stuff- plus Emily trying to unite half-breeds and whatnot."

Zyair shrugs in response, "I don't believe my response will be the one you want to hear, but I think you know what I'm going to say." And she huffs, playfully elbowing him. "Yeah, yeah, I know. 'Forgiveness is good for the soul' or something like that, right? How in the world do you manage to keep so relaxed all the time, I'll never understand it."

As he begins to respond, his words are cut short by an ear-piercing scream, one that's so loud and vehement that the two of them stop in their tracks- a shared glance and then the sound of fabric shuffling as wands are pulled out. Was someone hurt? Did something happen at the Gala? Was this just like back at Hogsmeade, had someone died? Zyair would make it a point to be not caught off-guard this time, pointing his wand ahead of him and taking the lead. If there was another point in chaos, he wanted to be well aware of his surroundings.

The two continue treading through the Grounds, voices and breath stifled as they tried to find the source of the scream. It only took a few minutes of walking in the general direction where it had been heard to find the source, a girl with her back turned to them. Scout stumbled forward, pushing Zyair out of the way to get to her. Oh no, was she hurt? Was she okay?

"Oh my gosh, was that you?" She kneeled down, trying to get a better look at the girl in front of her. "Are you oka- oh..." Her questions slowly stopped when she realized who she was looking at. It was that girl- Sabrina, right? The one Zyair had asked to go to the Gala with him. Oh no, if Zyair had actually said what he had told Scout he said (word-for-word nonetheless), him being here was probably a total mistake-

"Is she alright?" Zyair called, seeming to not have noticed who was on the ground. Scout gives him a look but it only makes him hesitate. He pushes closer to the two girls, freezing when he realizes who's on the ground. He opens his mouth to say something, but ultimately decides to close it. Is there anything he can even say? It was no lie that he had been awfully cruel to her when he (for lack of any better term) dumped her and left her by herself. Honestly, a genuine apology probably wouldn't have even been enough to mend the situation. He messed up.

Scout stutters over her words, but stays kneeled next to the girl on the off chance she is genuinely hurt. "Hey, hey, are you okay?" She asks again, the need to make sure nobody was injured overtaking any nerves she might've felt. Scout would feel worse knowing she might've left someone who needed help just because she was nervous about their reaction.

all Sabrina's actions/thoughts are in character

It was the most Sabrina had ever cried in her life. Her makeup ran, swirling into sad puddles on her face and neck. She was a mess. She was her own mess.

She kept her head down, set on top of her knees. How long she would stay there, she didn't know. Maybe when she wasn't grasping at the lost strings of things in her past. Maybe never. Maybe, for the rest of her life, Sabrina would sit there wallowing with her broken heart. Maybe... this was what she deserved.

She looked up when she heard voices, one happening to be more familiar than anything at the castle. Zyair. And a girl. A girl that she figured to be the one he left her for. They seemed to care that she was sobbing. At least the girl did. Naturally, Sabrina resorted to her old ways, fighting.

"Oh, like you care?" she snapped. She had never interacted with this girl, never laid eyes upon her, but Sabrina hated her with every fiber of her being. Maybe even more than she hated Zyair.

"You didn't seem to care that you were taking Zyair away from me, so why do you care now?"

She got to her feet and pointed at her own face before she began yelling at Zyair. "¿Ves este desastre, idiota? Tú lo causaste. ¡Tú!" You see this mess, idiot? You caused this. You!

Her jaw was shaking, holding back a hurricane of hurt. A hurricane that was built from the ground up by Zyair and his little girlfriend. Hurricanes were fans of destroying things.

"Woah-" Scout stumbled back, eyes wide. She opened her mouth to say something, only to promptly shut it after the girl hurled vicious words at her. What in the world does she even say in the situation? She wasn't even upset, obviously the girl- Sabrina- had a pretty good reason to be mad... but how in the world was Scout at fault because Zyair had been insensitive? She stuttered over her words, trying to force out literally anything to mediate the situation the way Zyair had been so good at doing.

After failing to say anything, she gave Zyair a helpless look, pushing herself up to her feet. A silent but clear 'help me, this was your fault' that could be read on anyone's face, not just someone as vivid as Scout was. Zyair stepped forward, a complex look on his face. He always looked content, Scout wasn't even sure she had ever seen Zyair have so much emotion in his face, even if it was conflicted.

"Sabrina." He spoke, voice even. "You can be angry at me all you want, but you don't get to drag Scout into this mess because of my mistake."

Oh no that was so sweet.

That wasn't even the nicest thing he had said or done to her, but damn. She hadn't ever had someone come to her aid and defend her in such a way, ever. Not when she was in school and getting relentlessly bullied, or when she had her fight with Asteria or really anyone. Even Emily hadn't stuck up for her when she was fighting with Casey. Not that Scout could fault her, Casey was going through a lot and Emily had always been a mediator than anything else. She didn't pick sides, only ending fights when she could.

Scout could feel her face bubble with emotion, tears threatening to spill over but never quite reaching that peak. She was about to say something to both of them before Zyair spoke again, voice still as calm as ever, "I understand I messed up, Sabrina, I'm sorry for leaving you the way I did, if you want to hate someone and be mad at someone let it be me."

"Sabrina, I'm really sorry...-" Scout started, but Zyair cut her off with a wave of his hand. In a break between the conversation, he leaned down and murmured something in her ear. "Go, I'll handle this. You don't deserve this treatment, only I do."

Of course, she wants to argue and shake her head and stay right where she's standing, but she can't take anymore people hating her, the anger, the frustration. Even if it's a cowardly move, her feet stumble beneath her and she finds herself walking away from the situation- sprinting as soon as she's out of direct eyesight from anyone.

She needs a break, she needs a minute. Where to now?

all Sabrina's actions/thoughts are in character

Could you ever forgive? Truly? Or did everything stay buried in your heart, waiting to resurface with the right cue? Sabrina sat on the verge of discovering.

She'd had her heart broken before, everyone had or would at some point in their lives. Her former heartbreak, however, hadn't been from a boy. A boy just like Zyair Ona'je like this year's misery. It'd been from her first year, the first time she tried it out. Illness forced her to redo it, forced her to spend months in pain. She hated feeling that way, powerless.

Power, she'd found, was one of the only ways she felt worthy.

And there she sat, in a ball gown with silver shoes and beautifully styled hair all gone to waste. Things she'd wasted on a boy who never actually cared about her. And who had he really cared for, wanted to have that with? Some stupid British redhead, whose name she determined to be Scout based off Zyair's reply. Just like the girl's name, Scout, had she been scouting out someone to hurt, someone's heart to break?

She'd been successful, whatever the motive.

God, he seemed to care about the Hogwarts girl so much. Sabrina didn't know their history, only how they'd treated her. What did surprise her though was when Scout tried to... apologize. To her. Apologize.

Sabrina tightened her expression, trying not to reveal how dumbfounded she was by Scout's apology. She scoffed when Zyair spoke, speaking for the next time after his real love left.

"You did more than mess up, as you call it. God, you just-" She forced herself to stop. Put her head in her hands for a second before standing up. "You dragged me along, made me think you cared. You didn't! I- I cared about you, Zyair. I thought this was finally the universe caring about me for once, telling me it was sorry for everything but it's still laughing in my face!"

Her hand reached for the pins in her hair and pulled them out. "Are you the universe? Once upon a time I thought you were my own universe. Now you're just another little puppet of the universe, making me care about you then turning around to pull Scout into your arms. So I will hate you, Zyair. I will hate you, and I will hurt, and I will wonder what would have happened if you hadn't so clearly chosen her."

She removed her eyes from Zyair's face, looking in the direction Scout had gone off in. "I'm surprised you aren't chasing her. Again." Her eyes found the pins she'd collected her hands. Pins that had once held together her facade, broken.

But this was how the world worked. And she hated it.

Zyair bit his tongue, letting her get her anger out. It was instinct, to tell Sabrina that he did care for her- it was why he was sitting here letting her get angry, it was why he didn't stand her up- but that was not care, that was selfishness. He didn't want to make her upset, he was a people-pleaser. If he really cared, he would have told Sabrina how he felt initially, and not lead her on for so long.

In his pitiful attempt to keep everything from going south, he had let the world crash and burn.

Throughout his life, Zyair has become a mastermind of being perfectly refined all the time. He keeps himself together, always has the perfect words on his tongue no matter the situation. His face always stays pleasant- he is the definition of a masterful facade. Today- although he had let his emotions stumble- would be no different. He wouldn't let his true thoughts leave his lips, he wouldn't let his face contort into what he was truly feeling.

"I'm sorry for hurting you, Sabrina," he replies, once she's gone quiet, "you're right, you didn't deserve this. I have tried to toe the line between caring for you and accepting my feelings for someone else, and in that, I have only hurt." 'Accepting my feelings,' was not the entire truth, because he still wasn't entirely sure what he felt for Scout, but he knew it was different than how he felt when he was with Sabrina. "I'm not asking you to forgive me, but I'd like to explain myself, at the very least."

Unlike Scout, Zyair never considered himself the kind of person dependent on how others viewed him. He was a people-pleaser, yes, but that was all surface level. Maybe that was why he felt so intensely towards Scout. He cared about how she saw him, he cared about whether or not she liked being around him as much as he liked being around her.

"You're a very good person, Sabrina. I really am sorry for leading you on," he bowed his head, "I have selfishly found myself caring for someone in a way that terrifies me, and because of that, you had to suffer. It's unfair for not only you, but for them as well." Zy knew better than to use Scout's name, she still hadn't signed any of her letters with that name, and he would respect that. "I hope you're able to find someone who is a stark contrast to me."

Sabrina could have laughed in his face. So she did. She laughed, dry and empty and meaningless. She cared too much, so she wouldn't care at all. Oh well, whatever. She'd have to hear a "nevermind" at some point in her life.

So what if it was rude of her to laugh at Zyair? Sabrina couldn't care less. "Sorry? You're sorry? I could say I'm an elephant, that doesn't make it true. How do I know this apology just isn't another one of your lies? You're right, I don't deserve this. I deserved the truth, you could have at least told me you were in love with some stupid girl from Hogwarts or something."

Her arms settled into a crossed position. "Then explain."

Sabrina doubted there would ever be a really truthful explanation for what she'd been put through. Another lie, another day. Another heartbreak, another day. "Where there is love, there is pain" was what her mamá would tell her and her sister as they grew, the Bolivan proverb didn't soothe her though.

Once Zyair was finished talking, she nodded thoughtlessly. "It was never fair. Nothing ever is." She looked in the direction Zyair's beloved girlfriend had left in. "I can't understand what causes people to lead others on, but I'm cutting our paths here."

Sabrina had always hated saying goodbye, even to those she hated.

"Anyone who doesn't lie is far better than you and what you did this fall." A pause, and then the fated words:

"Goodbye, Zyair Ona'je. Learn from the error of your ways, I'll be at home healing."

With her chin lifted high in the air, Sabrina Ortega turned her back on her infatuation and walked away. She refused to take a step back to the summer she had spent in love.

Growing up, Zyair very rarely got in trouble. There was a few years where Eba was still at home, and he was the "younger sibling who got away with everything"- but that ideology died when the twins were brought into his life. Since that point, he's always been the perfect older brother. Taking care of Chi and Mariam, helping his mother cook and clean, studying under Eba and then his tutor, he has always been perfect- and very rarely got scorned.

Despite that, Zyair was still a child. No matter how mature or perfect he was to others, he always felt that childish scorn building up beneath his chest, beneath his facade of sincerity. He, of course, understood how Sabrina felt and why she felt that way, but he also couldn't help but want to scoff internally. He didn't want to be forgiven, and he didn't expect it, but seriously? 'Anyone who doesn't lie', sometimes people had to lie. Yes, that was what Zyair believed was a necessity- lying to Sabrina's face came naturally because he felt like he had to do it.

Would it have hurt her more to tell her initially, or to lead her on the way he did? To hold on to his lies to keep her happy for a little longer, or rip the band-aid off as soon as he realized what he was doing? In his opinion, waiting was the best solution.

But that only begged the question, Zyair, if you knew what you were doing was wrong, do you still think it was best to keep the lie up? He didn't know the answer to that, but from her face... no, he still couldn't decide on a definitive answer. He would've lied to Scout-

Would he?

...

No. Would he?

He found himself standing idly, mouth agape, in Sabrina's wake. She was gone, but the question she sparked in his mind still remained. If it wasn't Sabrina, someone who- though he respected- he didn't care for in a way he did for Scout... would he still be able to make the same decision? If it were Scout in front of him, tears streaming down her face, would he still have been able to keep up the lie? Would he have felt more comfortable telling the truth to Sabrina, if he hadn't felt that way about Scout?

Was he only telling Sabrina now, because he knew that if he didn't, it would hurt Scout?

Why was he thinking like this? This was Zyair Ona'je, the perfect, complex, young man. Handsome and kind, calm and collected, he always had confidence in what he did, always aimed to do perfectly the right thing. But then a young girl with red hair and a fiery personality appeared, and suddenly he doesn't know if he's doing the right thing...? If he had never met Scout, he wouldn't have hurt Sabrina. In fact, if he hadn't met her, he probably wouldn't have even cared to engage with Sabrina the way he did.

Or maybe nothing would've changed at all? He's not sure.

But he did an awfully horrible thing today.
