There was a good, grown-up explanation spoken in a calm, grown-up manner that somewhat irritated Brie. Why did all her friends tend to get all grown-upy? Omiting the structure for contents, her eyes wandered the Ballroom without any purpose. The Ballerina she admired earlier was doing an awful job at pretending she wasn't eavesdropping.
"No, yeah I know but- ." now her eyes fixed on the floor - more specifically at Avis's shoes - looking in the direction of but not directly at the girl, "you could've owled. We could've done something else." Okay, so she might be a but whiny, but last time she checked, Avis was one of her friends. Friends that literally lived in the same building. Their hang-outs and in a way relationship were built like a game- it was her turn, and she stalled.
Those thoughts weren’t new, of course. They were of an older, festering, almost-one-month-in-making bunch. Yet, somehow, now they didn't hold such power as mere minutes ago. A whistling steaming pot whose central chimney got opened. The steam might still be in it, but it's slowly deflating.
"It might take a while, but I'll always be back. I never forget."
She lifted her gaze, only to see Avis avert hers. The sound of ripping tape ripped through the silence, suddenly the loudest sound in the world.
She blocked the make-shift sticky weapon, scoffing out a chuckle. The steam was all out."Not up for a remach, I see." she nudged the balled up tape with her foot, "Scared your team would've lost?" mused the smaller girl, fingertips lightly brushing over Sebastian's back, keeping him from disappearing under her robes. Speaking of..
"Will you keep yours?" Sabrina nodded to Avis's parcel. She could use hers in a potion, but now that they were named, it felt a bit.. off. "I will, at least up until it's bearable outside," she clarified whilst getting up to her feet, strap of her shoulder bag fixed around her shoulder. Her beatles got placed inside one of her empty robe pockets as she offered Avis a hand to pull her up. "You have a duel coming up, right?" she commented, remembering the pinned up parchement in their common room where she had seen Avis' name amongst the duelists. "I'll come to distract you" she warned - threatened - offered.

For some reason, Avis' logical, understandable explanation seemed to only result in Sabrina's further annoyance, and Avis couldn't for the life of her figure out why.
"you could've owled. We could've done something else." Avis could have given her an explanation for that as well. She could have told the Sabrina that she didn't remember her last name, that she didn't like the Owlery, that she really wanted to do this rule. But that probably wouldn't have helped. Sabrina wasn't looking for some perfectly fit-together puzzle, she was looking for something else. Something deeper. Something that an eleven-year-old Avis couldn't understand or place. Not consciously, at least. And yet, there was a piece of her in her heart - strange, she was used to using her brain - that knew, that knew what she needed to say.
"It might take a while, but I'll always be back. I never forget."
And it was true. True to the highest degree. True to the point where it hurt.
And it must have worked, as Sabina's face lifted a bit, her doubts if not forgotten about then ignored. "Scared your team would've lost?" Avis quickly jerked her head in a confident no. "Oh no, Kāga is undefeated. Even in its little beetle fight rings before being sold in Hogsmeade all the other beetles would bet on it." She spoke monotonously, but a smile played on the edge of her lips, a wry grin giving her away.
"Will you keep yours?" Avis shook her head vigorously. Oh no. Absolutely not. "No no no, what if they crawled into my bed or- She paused, taking a deep breath before changing her voice and clearing her throat. "I mean, Ahem. I don't have the capacity or patience to care for beetles currently, if you would like them you are welcome to them."
To the comment - threat, about her duel, Avis simply grinned. In truth, she would love for Sabrina to watch her, but would never say that out loud.

Avis' slip up has earned her a hearty chuckle from the shorter girl. "Yeah yeah of course," she rolled her eyes at Avis' quick made-up explenation "that's definitely why. Come here you guys, I'll save you from your incompetent owner."
Reaching down into Avis' parcel, Sabrina gently scooted up the two beetles named after one of their biggest predators. Setting them down into her pocket, she let her fingers linger there.
If she wanted to keep them alive and relatively happy until winter passes, she had to visit the Library soon, do some research on beetles. She of course understood them as a potion ingredience, but this was her first time seeing them as pets.
Pulling her hand out again, she pushed and held the door open for Avis. Still in the doorway, she waved the painted ballerina goodbye before shifting her attention back to the other raven. "I have Transfiguration next - reckon I can make it before the professor shows?" she asked, already pretty positive that the answer was no, as the classes has started minutes ago. She was honestly tempted to just skip the lecture all together, preferably with Avis as well, but that would be harder to explain than just running late.

Pulling up the last of the tape, Avis placed the wadded up ball into her satchel to throw away, before slipping over to pick up the wad she had thrown at Sabrina, putting that in her satchel as well. With a final glance at the ground, to make sure there was no loose tape - or worse, beetles, she stood up and flung her satchel over her shoulder.
She was very happy that Sabrina had volunteered to keep her beetles. Avis didn't know what she would have done with them otherwise. Probably dropped them outside to fend for themselves. Beetles were resourceful. Probably. They probably would have been fine. Probably.
She followed Sabrina's wave over to the painting of the ballerina that she had been looking at when Avis walked in. Were they friends or something? Avis resisted the severe urge to point out to Sabrina that the paintings were not in fact alive, no matter how alive they seemed. Probably. Honestly, they could be perfectly alive and Avis wouldn't even have batted an eye.
"I have Transfiguration next - reckon I can make it before the professor shows?" Avis shrugged. "I have not the slightest idea. How fast can you run?" She slipped out the door, offering Sabrina a nod of thanks, and slipped down the hallway. She didn't know about Sabrina, but she planned to make her next class on time.
Until next time!

If not occupied with closing the doors, Sabrina probably would have attempted to bid Avis goodbye more properly - or at least in her usual way. But as it was now, she was reduced only to a fleeting wave and a quiet "Faster than you for sure" as the other girl set off.
Sabrina wondered if somehow Avis sensed her intention and fled before the shorter girl could attempt to fistbumb her or - god forbit - hug her. Maybe. Probably. Next time, she thought, you won't escape me.
Smiling to herself, she swiveled on her heel and basically bolted the other way. One hand on the strap of her bag, other cupped over the pocket her new "pets" were hidden in, she scurried up the stairs, she went through all the rules she could choose from in her mind. By the time she reached the classroom, she had settled on one. Thankfully she didn't arrive terribly late and had the time to find and slid into an empty seat by a window.
She was practically oblivious to the lecture, a plan forming in her mind as she stared out the window at gray sky. After the lesson, Sabrina would beeline to the library, more than beetle related books on her mind.SABRINA LEFT THE THREAD
