Invitation and Persuasion
Gideon Athanatos was not pleased.
The Hufflepuff had endured the tedium of introductions, finding that he already knew most of his cabinmates: his younger brother Aamon and his elder brother Mathias as well as his future sister-in-law Winnie Harper were there as well as a few random-seeming students. The girls did not appear to be particularly interesting, Avis Marlong and Nabi Park. They existed within proximity of the Athanatos but he was not entirely certain if they would at any point enter his orbit. Matthre Campbell, on the other hand was a new plaything that did not know better.
Giddy had surveyed his cabin mates with mild amusement and muted disdain, they seemed dull. After sewing a hint of chaos into the cabin, they had all departed for the welcoming tea. Tea? It seemed like an uptight choice but this was the French. After they left, Gideon settled his trunk full of secrets and silk into the very room he had handpicked for its strategic advantages—
And yet, for all his careful maneuvering, for all his expectations, there was one unforgivable oversight.
Taylor Athanatos, his younger cousin was not there.
A mistake. An annoyance. A miscalculation that set a cold, slow-burning irritation curling under his skin. They seemed to find it necessary to room him with his other, less interesting family members, but they sent her off to thrive on her own.
Of course, it wasn’t truly a problem. Not in the grand scheme of things. He was not concerned about her ability to thrive, she was an Athanatos afterall.
But Gideon did not like to be separated from the things that were his.
And Taylor, whether she realized it or not, belonged to him.
Not in the obvious way, no. Not in the way that would make their family stare and whisper. But in the way that set his teeth on edge when he saw her with others. In the way that made his fingers tighten at his sides when she spoke of other men with amusement in her voice. After her father died, she was sent away to the furthest reaches of Russia to live with her aunties. He disliked how this geographical barrier prevented him from seeing her at his whim.
It was a problem.
And Gideon did not allow problems to linger.
The halls of Beauxbatons were too bright, too delicate, all lace and gold and soft watercolor skies. He hated it. It was too pretty in the wrong ways, too curated, too clean. It was even decorated for the holiday. They were trying too hard he mentally commented, all these hearts and flowers. This desperate attempt at romance.
Taylor did not belong in a place like this. Surrounded by flowers and pathetic suitors offering her sweets and blooms, silks and gems, as if she did not already have both in abundance at home with him.
And yet, when he found her, standing at the edge of one of the wide, arched balconies, looking out over the gardens and courtyards below, Gideon felt something tighten in his chest. She was not dressed in pink frills, daring to consume the holiday with the same desperation as her peers. Dark lace, long sleeves, a feminine silhouette
She was breathtaking, wasn’t she?
Not in the way others saw her, not in the way they whispered and admired her from afar. But in the way she had always been—untouchable, untamed, completely oblivious to the storm she brewed in him.
Gideon approached with deliberate ease, his footsteps barely a whisper against the polished floor. He was not slouching, wearing a velvet jacket and dark trousers on a deep plum color. The silk shirt beneath, a shock of teal. His blonde hair tousled, adding an additional inch and a half to his height.
"Did you miss me, Taylor?"
[Godmodding approved] She turned at the sound of his voice, and there—there it was.
That little flicker of recognition, that moment of relief, of ease, the way Taylor's expression shifted ever so slightly when she realized it was him.
Not Mathias.
Not Aamon.
Not Vladimir.
But him.
He was seeing what he wanted to see, but reality did not matter when the universe he desired could be one of his own making. He considered roaming the gardens, finding mischief and entertainment among the blooms. But there was a social engagement to attend, as uninteresting an affair as it would appear.
"I was beginning to think I’d have to suffer this trip without you," he continued, his voice light as he spoke. His mask firmly in place.

Taylor had barely arrived in Beauxbatons. The journey was long from Koldovstoretz and while she slept most of the journey, she barely had time to shake the travel from her limbs, before she felt it—the familiar, lingering sensation of being watched. Not in a general, oh-how-pretty-she-looks sort of way. No, this was different. This was Gideon. Not that she was certain, she lacked some magical Gideon-sense that pinged when he was near, it was just a feeling that she had on many occasion when she visited her Uncle Thaddeus' palatial estate.
This feeling meant that she had approximately fifteen seconds before Giddy materialized out of thin air like some smug, velvet-clad omen of mischief.
She counted down in her head.
Fifteen… fourteen… thirteen…
"Did you miss me, Taylor?"
Boom. Right on time.
Taylor sighed but turned anyway, unsurprised to find him standing there like he'd been carved into the palace walls, all smooth arrogance and carefully casual menace. She saw him for what he was, a monster, but she did not recognize the terror that others felt towards him. He was a menace like a gull stealing a sandwich, not a monsoon than threatened to drown a small village. Gideon loved his mischief and while he hovered a bit too incessantly, Taylor was never lonesome and never bored.
Her older cousin's blond hair was slightly windswept, like he’d been running his hands through it impatiently, and his blue eyes— sharp, always watching—gleamed in that way that made Taylor feel like Giddy was three steps ahead in a conversation she didn’t know they were having yet. Many of the Athanatos men were more read and intelligent than they let on. Thaddeus invested greatly in them, not so much in the women.
She was placed in a small cabin with several people that she did not know. She had left her things there and immediately departed to explore her new environment. This would have been a lonesome week if it was not for family.
"Giddy," pronounced more like Gee-dee she proclaimed. She tilted her head, lips curling into a smirk. “Oh no, not at all,” she replied dismissively, waving a hand. “In fact, I was just thinking how nice it is here. So peaceful. No loud cousins. No troublemakers. Just quiet.” She sighed dramatically, placing a hand over her heart. “Bliss.”

"Giddy," Taylor announced, her heavy accent butchering his moniker Geedy. Not that he cared, it was not the proper pronunciation of the his name that Gideon cared about, but rather the tone and the energy behind his name. There was always an energy there. An excitement for what he represented, an escape from monotony. An excuse to be her true self in a world with so many limitations.
Taylor's excitement over his (expected) presence was palpable. “Oh no, not at all,” she lied. “In fact, I was just thinking how nice it is here. So peaceful. No loud cousins. No troublemakers. Just quiet.”
Just boredom rather. There was nothing of actual interest in the gardens either unless his cousin had become some voyeur and had spied a pair of young lovers in the rose bushes. He shook his head in denial.
Bored.
She was utterly, completely, unequivocally bored.
“Bliss.”
"Mispronounced bored... Boar -deh." Gideon’s lips quirked, but the amusement didn’t quite reach his eyes. “And yet, here you are. Alone. On a balcony. Pining for something.” Him he hoped as he glanced onto the manicured grounds with a sense of deep boredom and mild frustration.
While circumstances might have separated their cabin, it hardly meant that they had to spend this week apart. He would look past her at the grounds, perhaps recognize some of the students ambling towards the tea party.

She was not going to get tangled up in Gideon's shenanigans already. Maybe, no most certainly, before the end of the week. But now, so soon after she had arrived. Not a chance!
Her defiant mindset would not last for long. It was as if she was in a debate with someone that already knew what she was going to say and had a counterpoint already loaded.
"Mispronounced bored... Boar -deh." Gideon quipped. She glowered at him for making fun of her accent. She could not help it that English is a weird language. She spoke several, it was hard to even remember which words belonged to which tongue.
“And yet, here you are. Alone. On a balcony. Pining for something.”
Gideon was making fun of her. Her frown persisted. Maybe a handsome Russian man, one that her aunties would approve of. Manly and strong. A powerful wizard perhaps. Would she find one of those here? Probably not, but she longed for a love story of her own.
Taylor scoffed at the absolutely true assertion. “Pining? Pffft. I do not pine. I bask.” She gestured grandly with a sweep of her long, slender arm at the scenery. “See? Basking.”
That was very much what she was doing right now. Basking. In what, she was not sure. But she was very much basking in it abundantly.

Bask. Apparently that was what this was. Heh. She was doing it all wrong then.
Gideon hummed, stepping beside her, his hands clasped neatly behind his back. He was completely at ease. Totally in control. “Mm. Basking. And yet, somehow, you look bored.” He observed.
He leaned down, she was so much smaller than he was, and whispered in her ear. “Contemplating how bored you are?” His warm breath causing her blond hair to move ever so slightly as the air heated the shell of her ear.
He grinned. “Contemplating how much you missed me?” Admit it Just say yes and put an end to this silly little charade.
Not that she would admit anything of the sort. He shook his head, nothing here was unexpected as his metaphorical claws would finally attempt to take hold. Gideon's smirk widened as he announced his purpose at last. “I came here to collect you.” He did not know that she was here, or anywhere in particular, only that she had likely gone to the international event like the rest of them. Happening upon her here or anywhere else for that matter was an eventuality.
Now, they had an event to attend, or at least make an appearance at. Then there was mischief to be had, just the two of them.

“Mm. Basking. And yet, somehow, you look bored.” Gideon commented, prodding at Taylor's simple facade.
Taylor huffed, crossing her arms. “Not bored. Contemplative.” That was the right word wasn't it? Contemplationitive? She was not sure. What is it that they say, use it thrice and it is yours? Yes, she was 'contemplative.'
“Contemplating how bored you are?”
Gideon pushed. He was used to getting his way and terribly insistent. "Yes, I mean— no." She stumbled over her reply and a sly grin (godmodding allowed) would eclipse Gideon's face.
She had not left the bait out on purpose, but like a starving man who happened upon bread, he snatched the morsel immediately. “Contemplating how much you missed me?”
She didn't reply to his inquiry, much to his likely disappointment. She missed him and he knew that much, but preferred the hard to get dance. Instead, Taylor shot Gideon a glare. “Why are you here?” These games had a reason, they always did, even the seemingly senseless ones.
Gideon's smirk widened in response to Taylor's direct line of questioning. “To collect you.”
“Collect me? Nyet.” (No) Taylor turned her back to the view, lifting her chin stubbornly. “I have just arrived, and you want to steal me away already? No. You go enjoy your plotting, I will stay here. Maybe make new friends, enjoy not being involved in loud cousin nonsense.”

“Collect me? Nyet.” (No)
Taylor had denied him. Or at least she said so verbally. She was really not in a position to say no, the power dynamics simply did not allow it, but she enjoyed playing hard to get and if this little dance made her happy, then so be it. Then he would collect her and do with her as he pleased.
“I have just arrived, and you want to steal me away already? No. You go enjoy your plotting, I will stay here. Maybe make new friends, enjoy not being involved in loud cousin nonsense.”
She went on, her heavy accent making the weight of her words seem heavier, sterner than they actually were. She was perhaps missing the point. Cousin nonsense as she put it was the point wasn't it. Thye needed to get involved in nonsense. She needed to at the very least. The nonsense would make those inhibitions a bit weaker. To make those sharp lines of black and white a bit fuzzier. Grey even. To make those mores more of a suggestion than an expectation.
Gideon tsked, shaking his head. “Ah, but you see, my dear Taylor, you are the nonsense. And your presence has been sorely missed.” He sighed, as if greatly put upon. “I am beginning to think I’d have to endure this dreadful trip without you.” He was the true picture of suffering here.
"Do I seem like the type to enjoy useless frills?" This time his hand was over his heart in this mock play.

Gideon was like some sort of demon prince trying to convince the hero to make a bad decision, to betray their friends with sweet words, cunnin responses and perhaps the offer of a fantastical reward. There was a reason those demons were so very successful, with their wit, wealth and power.
Compliments aside, Taylor snorted. “Yes, poor Giddy. Suffering. You, who thrives on dramatics, suffering in a castle full of wealth and charm? Please.”
“I am beginning to think I’d have to endure this dreadful trip without you.”
Yes, poor-poor Giddy, Taylor was giggling. This was just too much. So much drama.
"Do I seem like the type to enjoy useless frills?" Was that a serious question. Her lips tightened together as she tried to hold back a rancorous laugh. Hoe was that even being said with a straight face? Between his silken trousers, his plum velvet jacket, his teal man-blouse, the Athanatos was walking around like a parrot made of diamonds exploded on him.
When she could recover from the laughter that bubbled through regardless of her efforts at suppression, Taylor would arch a brow and point to his jacket. “You are wearing velvet, Giddy.” Or Gee-dee as she called him.
Taylor rolled her eyes, unable to help the remaining small bubbles of laughter to slip free. Fine. He was funny. Annoying, but funny.

She pointed out the fact that he was wearing velvet. Silk also as well as an array of expensive and rare threaddings, all done painstakingly by hand by someone significantly less important than him.
He looked down at himself, as if genuinely surprised. “Ah. Touché.”
Her laughter echoed his success, it was his victory song. Now, before Taylor could cut him loose, he struck.
“Come with me,” he said smoothly, bring them back to the initial point. “The tea party.” He gestured vaguely, “some Beauxbatons nonsense. Tea, pastries, polite conversation. You know, all things I am known for.” He gave a moment's pause to circle it back to their shared moment of humor, a tether manufactured between them. "I am dressed for it apparently after all."
His expression was all innocence. Too much innocence. “It would be a shame to waste an afternoon sulking on a balcony.” He prodded, taking their conversation in reserve, through the cracks and the facets a final time to solidify his hold.
He smiled knowingly, unbothered by her faux outrage. Her alleged 'contemplation.' “Come now, Taylor. Do you really think you’ll enjoy their company more than mine?” His voice dipped, just slightly, just enough to make her roll her eyes again if they needed the exercise.
His smirk deepened. “I will win, you know.”
He held out his arm, a ridiculous, theatrical gesture, as if he were escorting a princess instead of a girl who would absolutely try to throw him into the nearest fountain if he got too smug about this.

He was dressed for it. The laughter replacing the independent pretense.
“I am not sulking! I am contemplating!” The protested, using the word yet again.
Gideon would only smile knowingly, unbothered by Taylor's outrage. “Come now, Taylor. Do you really think you’ll enjoy their company more than mine?” She had no idea who -they- would be, as he mentioned. The nobody else that was standing around them. Her imaginary suitors, if them, then no. She would certainly have a better time with them than with Giddy.
Taylor rolled her eyes at him but did not answer. In fact, she hesitated. Not because she didn’t want to go, but because she didn’t want Gideon to know she wanted to go.
His smirk deepened. “I will win, you know.” But he already knew.
Taylor sighed, long and exaggerated, before throwing her hands up. “Fine! But if it is awful, I am blaming you.” it was not much of a thread, just a delusion of power she did not actually have.
He held out his arm, the crook being offered in a galliant sort of way. Shame he was not her prince.
Taylor stared at his offered arm. Then at him. Then back at his arm.
With a defeated sigh, she took it.
“Pastries first,” she warned. Her need for carbs trumped all else. “Then nonsense.”
