This first week of officially being at Hogwarts had been nothing short of intense. Lark was glad to finally have some down time and head outside to a spot she had become fond of over her summer here. A ways out from the castle rested a large willow tree, its branches stretching over the water and vines tickling the top of the water gently. It was nestled in a secluded spot which meant Lark could escape and collect herself each week she made her way out to the Lake. The perfect spot.. one that she didn't think would be used by anyone else, except... there he was.

Lark had been having some trouble with an assignment for Potions. Coming to Hogwarts, she had thought the class wouldn't give her much trouble but in fact she found herself having a hard time memorizing each and every ingredient, process... almost everything. She had been used to reading on her own time but having to read chapters assigned to them each class at a faster pace had put her in a bit of a funk recently. Since meeting Dale, Lark had fought with herself about sending him an owl to see if he could help out. She had written and rewritten at least ten different letters... gone to the Owlery with two good copies only to talk herself out of it.. that was until earlier this morning. He had responded to her in a timely fashion, which had made her stomach flutter, and offered to meet up at this spot.

After having lunch alone, her friends seeming to be busy that day, Lark had set out to meet the boy. It was a welcomed surprise to see him sitting under her tree. Sure it wasn't her tree necessarily but she had formed a sort of bond with the spot. Thankful it wasn't as windy as her outing with Elzabeth had been, although she had been sure to wear a thicker knit sweater just in case. Lark walked over to where Dale was sitting hoping not to startle him. He appeared to be deep in thought reading a book.

"Hey, I hope ye didn't have ta wait long." She gave a slight wave and smiled down at him. Feeling a heat rise in her cheeks she looked at his jeans and gray polo musing how well the color suited him. "Whatcha readin'?" Lark knelt down next to him before smoothing out the bottom of her overall skirt to sit down next to him on one of the roots that curved over the bank and into the water below them.

Dale thought to back to the first time he had first come down to the great lake, being from a resort town, Dale was no stranger to pretty views, but this one, in particular, made dale awestruck every time he saw it, even after two years of looking at the grand lake. He had discovered his favorite spot halfway through his first year at Hogwarts, he discovered when he went out the castle to explore the grounds when doing so he found a tree situated upon a hill, it had a great view of the lake and great shade for sunny days.

But today Dale wasn't at his favorite hill, instead, he was the opposite side of the lake. Dale had few friends, the few people he considered his friends were Tatiana and Santario, but there was a person Dale almost considered a friend, Lark. He had met Lark when he helped her out in studying magical creatures, he had also scared her a bit when he said he was in the Dark Witch Society, but hopefully, she wasn't scared of Dale anymore. When Dale helped her out, he offered more help if she needed it, saying to owl him if she needed it, and just this morning she had sent him one. When he went up to get his Sunday owls, usually consisting of his mother asking him questions, and his dad giving him updates on any scientific news that had happened that weel, he had found another owl when he saw who it was from his heart lept a little. The owl asked for his help in potions, he replied almost instantly, stating that he'd love to help out. The owl also stated a spot, so after reading the owls sent from his parents, and writing them back, Dale went back to his dorm, packed up his potion notes, and since he was going a few hours, he packed his chemistry textbook to read and study for fun until she got there.

He decided to just skip lunch, he wasn't very hungry and head down to the specified spot. He immediately knew the place she had said, the willow tree was quite big not easy to miss. He sat down and unpacked his chemistry textbook and the potions textbook. He quickly reviewed the materials from yesterday and then read from his chemistry textbook. It wasn't a particularly cold day, but the wind made Dale wish he had brought a light jacket.

As he intently read from his large rectangular book, he didn’t even notice a girl come up to him and say "Hey, I hope ye didn't have ta wait long." The greeting startled Dale, so much so that he almost dropped his book, luckily he was able to catch himself. But he recognized that accent, he looked up to see Lark and said ”H-Hello Lark, you sort of startled me there.” Dale said with a smile and lighthearted chuckle, ah he looked at her a rush of heat came over him, she was wearing an overall skirt over a long sleeve sweater, he had had to say to himself how pretty she looked in the outfit. Thinking that brought another wave of heat over Dale, he quickly calmed himself down, he had wondered why he was so nervous the first time they had met, and Dale now knew the answer, she was pretty, that was it, knowing this, maybe Dale would not be too nervous this time around.

”Oh its nothing, just a chemistry textbook.” Dale said as he closed the book next to him, ”But uhh, you said you needed help with potions?” he said as he picked up his potions textbook.

Setting her journal in her lap, Lark set her hands on top of it and looked at Dale. "Yes, potions! Although you're lookin' over chemistry? You mentioned it before, what does that involve?" Honestly, she had been putting off her potions homework for awhile now. Something about it had just made her want to procrastinate more and more. Dale offering to help was a welcomed offer but it had also meant she needed to buckle down and work. Leaning closer to Dale she tried to get a better look at the book. "Looks like a rather hefty book." Without really thinking to ask she felt drawn to the book and picked it up, opening it carefully to a couple different pages. One of which looked like a bunch of colored boxes with some sort of abbreviations in them. It looked completely foreign to her. A couple hexagonal shapes were scattered on the page as well and.... tons.... of paragraphs of information it almost made her head spin.

"Wow.." She breathed as her golden eyes flowed over each sentence in front of her. It seemed like such a great deal of knowledge in here, intimidating but also intriguing. Turning the pages she came across a strange weaving shape with bars and circles. It had different colors that she could only guess defined specific parts of what each shape meant. "DNA?" Lark said and looked at Dale. Her cheeks flushed as she began to realize how out of touch she was with the Muggle world. The feeling made her frustrated and almost angry with herself for not knowing more.. especially since she felt it made her look ignorant to her peers. Everyone she ran into even from Wizarding families seemed to know at least a decent amount about Muggles and their culture.

Dale watched Lark sit down next to him, he quickly his back and hoped his hair wasn't too messy, it was a little windy today, that that made his messy brown hair even messier. He quickly ran a hand through his brown hair in an attempt to try to calm it, it worked to a small extent. He looked over to Lark, she had put her hand on her skirt and looked at Dale and said "Yes, potions! Although you're lookin' over chemistry? You mentioned it before, what does that involve?" Before Dale could say anything, she leaned over and picked up his textbook, he didn't mind, Dale was glad that his interests interested someone else. "Looks like a rather hefty book." Dale did agree with that, this particular book was the biggest one Dale had brought with him. "I-Its a little bigger than average." Dale agreed. As Lark carefully opened the book to the first page she seemed a little confused, she had opened the page to the periodic table, Dale decided to explain a little to her, "That's the periodic table, it lists all the elements know. It's uhh, more organized than it looks." Dale said with a lighthearted chuckle. She flipped through the pages explaining most of the elements and their properties, she kept flipping until she landed on the page explaining the chemistry in DNA.

"DNA?" Lark asked, he quickly tried to think of a way to explain DNA to someone who knew little to nothing about muggle studies, he guessed it would be best just to keep it as simple as possible, a lot of people get scared when overwhelmed with information, Dale knew this because it had happened to him in almost all of his magic classes. "Well DNA is a very important thing, it is the building block of life, umm this particular book just explains how certain chemical that makeup DNA bond together" Dale was unhappy with his explanation of DNA, it made it sound much too complicated, "Umm, d-don’t worry if you don’t understand, even muggle kids don’t learn this for a few more years." Dale assured the girl, the only real reason he knew so much was because of his dad, he had made sure Dale knew his sciences.

Lark rested her golden eyes on the boy, the wind sweeping his messy brown hair across part of his face, some wisping to one side at another breeze passing. She watched as he concerned himself with his hair. She felt at ease sitting with him outside just talking to one another without any interruptions. There was a little ball of anxiety bubbling in her stomach but nothing that felt threatening. It was more of a nervous excited feeling as she sat next to the boy, not a bothersome feeling that made her anxious or worry. Not like when she had been around the others recently. Something about Dale was calming and reminded her of a warm hug wrapping around her shoulders.

Listening as Dale explained DNA to her, she felt her mind get a bit sidetracked again studying his features. His light brown skin complimented by his deep brown eyes and outfit of the day. The curve of his jawline and angle of his neck as he sat next to her. Part of it she blamed on the more artistic side of her brain noticing lines and details others might not see..still artsy outlook or not he really was quite good looking... Lark began to wonder what he would look like through the years and as he aged, her imagination sort of running wild and causing a smile to creep over her lips. Losing herself in the depths of her mind imaging a whole life for the boy she came across a thought of the two of them older and laughing at a party of some kind.. dancing and.. what had Dale been saying?

"S..s.Sorry!" Lark stammered hoping she hadn't let much time lapse between what Dale had finished saying. She glanced down to the book in her lap still open to the page he must have been answering her puzzled look prior. Her eyes darting up to the boy's again, Lark blushed a deep red all the way down her neck. "I uh.. sorry!" Apologizing, she shook her head not wanting to explain she had been lost in some sort of daze over the boy's looks... he would surely find it silly. Closing the book in her lap she handed it back to Dale.

"I.. what were we saying?" She was beyond embarrassed now and unsure if he would find it a bit annoying that she seemed scatterbrained. This feeling was completely new to her. Elzabeth had mentioned about feelings and how maybe she had a crush on James, but this felt much different. It didn't consume her or make her feel childish. She found herself more so wanting to impress Dale and be able to be on the same level as the boy, whereas James always seemed to be much too far ahead of her to ever let her catch up to him. Dale was patient with her, quiet, observing, softer spoken... his eyes. Pulling herself back out as her mind began to drift back into that scene she had imagined of the two of them, Lark cleared her throat.

"I brought some of my notes, but I uh.. potions yeah." Her voice trailed off as she caught his eye again. "I 'ad some trouble just narrowing down I guess the uh.. timin' of stirring potions. Even specific amounts of ingredients? Mainly with the Herbicide potion we 'ad ta work on." Showing her notes she bit at her lower lip nervously. "I sort ah well.." Nervously she pulled at her hair and combed it with her fingers before pulling it all forward and resting it against the right side of her chest. "Well.. I'm not sure what I did but it ate through part of the table when it dribbled out of the cauldron." Everyone else in the class hadn't seemed to have as much trouble brewing what they needed, but Lark's had boiled over almost and flowed out in a sticky mess and burned holes into the tables they were working at. Goodness, she still couldn't get the look of the Professor out of her mind at the sight of her frazzled hair and sleeves rolled up nervously trying to push back the sloppy mess only to burn her hands. The whole thing had been a frustrating ordeal, hopefully one that wouldn't be repeated with Dale's help.

Dale was happy he could help out someone, his first year and even this current year was mostly him being helped. But it felt nice to finally help someone out, and it seemed like Lark really appreciated his teaching, although he had to admit that he was indeed a horrible teacher, as much as he loved helping people, his ability to explain things he knew was not very good. Most of the time he would just read out the notes he had written down in class, or something out of a textbook he had read. That's why he felt so comfortable teaching people about magical creatures and potions, he had read and taken the most notes in those classes.

As Dale looked up from his textbook when he finished explaining what DNA was to Lark, he expected her to be also looking at the book, but instead, Dale looked up and saw two golden orbs staring into his brown ones. They locked eyes for a second, as they did this he remembered that Lark had freckles, a blush quickly engulfed Dale’s face, and a rush of heat came over him, as he looked at Lark again her face looked just as red as his own, and she apologized to Dale, not just once but twice, after the second time she closed the textbook on her lap and handed it back to Dale. As Dale took the book and put it next to him he thought about why Lark was acting like this, Dale came to the conclusion that she must've zoned out while he explaining DNA, Dale wasn't upset, he understood why she would, most people would actually, biology and chemistry weren't usually what muggle called “fun” but for some reason it all infatuated him, and he understood that very little shared his interest in the sciences.

”I-It’s all ok, I-I don’t think you'll ever have to worry about learning this stuff for a long time.” Dale said with a lighthearted laugh, his face was still a bit red and he was scratching his pointer finger with his thumb to try to refocus himself. It seemed like Lark had beat him at the refocusing thing because she had said, "I.. what were we saying?", Dale remembered the whole reason she came out here was that she needed help with potions. A fact she remembered herself as she said she brought some of her notes, and that she struggled with the stirring and timing of the potions, she had also said that her mixture had eaten through the table, Dale remembered his first attempt at making the herbicide potion, while it didn't chew through table, it would kill more than just plants. "Well" Dale said while pulling out his own textbook, in his first-year textbook he had written down all the precise measurements for all the potions they had learned. "D-Did you make sure you ground up the lionfish spines and standard mixture to a fine powder? As for the stirring of the potion..." Dale squinted down at his messy notes at the side of the page, "In a our standard tin cauldron you would need to stir 45 minutes after adding the spin and mix powder, and then 4 times after adding the last ingredients." Dale explained to Lark. He hoped he didn't make to sound too complicated.

Taking hold of her quill, Lark scribbles notes next to her old ones as Dale spoke to her. She hadn't realized just how much something like not crushing an ingredient as finely or too much would effect a potion. It did make sense now that she thought about it but at the time she assumed she could get by. Next time she would be more careful.

"I think I left the spines too coarse when I added them. May have even 'ad an extra one.. would size matter?" She swished the tip of the quill against her chin in thought. "I might have to be more careful weighing too next time..." Crossing out her previous notation about spine sizing, she adjusted her notes once more before looking over the next set with timing bullet points she had written out.

Lark leaned over a bit and looked at the boys notes as he went over stirring time. She grinned seeing his handwriting. Unsure how he managed to read it although something about it was unique to Dale, messy like his hair yet precise at the same time.

"Four times...." Lark sighed and realized she hadn't written down that last part either. She usually was so thorough with notes but potions seemed so overwhelming. Setting her quill down to stretch her hand she gave Dale a wide grin.

"I can't thank you enough for this! I definitely owe you one. You've helped me twice now an' I havent done anything for you in return." Wondering what she could even offer the boy she scooted back and bit and leaned against the trunk of the tree.

"What sort of things do you like? Anything I could help with? Make?... get?" She had yet to hear from her parents but her Gran would certainly answer if she had to send away for something to pay Dale back for his kindness. She didnt want him to think she was taking advantage.

Dale watched Lark scribble down some notes on her own notebook, he hoped his handwriting wasn't too messy. As she wrote some notes, she said she might've left the spines to coarse and maybe had added another one, most people when first making potions don't realize how important measurements and the size of ingredients are, Dale was no expectation to this, the first potion that he made was nowhere successful. ”Making sure you crush up the ingredients is a very important part of making a potion. But don’t worry, it took me three failed potions to learn that.” Dale said with a lighthearted laugh.

It made Dale feel good helping Lark, he had almost forgotten the feeling of happiness he felt as he saw the smile on the other person’s face as he or she realized where they went wrong and how to fix it. "I can't thank you enough for this! I definitely owe you one. You've helped me twice now an' I havent done anything for you in return." Lark said to him as she moved to lean on the trunk. The thanks made Dale smile, it was true that he had helped her twice, but that was because he wanted to, and felt saying “your smile is enough of a thank you” would be strange or weird, but it would be true, for some reason he caught himself taking many glances at Lark, thinking about what her hobbies might be, thinking about her instead of studying, Dale tried to remember the word people used to refer to this feeling.

But as he was thinking he was pulled out of his thoughts as Lark said "What sort of things do you like? Anything I could help with? Make?... get?" Dale thought for a second, he didn’t need anything really, ”T-Thanks for offering, but really I just like helping people, so I-I really don't anything in return.” Dale assured the girl. This is usually the part where he would say his goodbyes, but for some reason, he really wanted to stay longer and just talk with Lark, he remembered that she was good at drawing, maybe talking about that will let them spend more time together, ”Uhh, I-I remembered that you liked to draw? Maybe one day you can draw a dragon or some other creature for me.” Dale said a little nervously.

Waiting anxiously for Dale's response, Lark felt herself start to worry that maybe she had come off as pushy. Picking at the hem of her skirt again absentmindedly, she sucked in her lower lip.

”T-Thanks for offering, but really I just like helping people, so I-I really don't anything in return.”

Lark blinked at his response. Perhaps she really had come off as too forward. She instantly felt a nervous flip of her stomach. So he would've just helped anyone else, of course he would. It had nothing to do with her, Lark told herself. She already could tell that Dale was extremely kind so it only made sense that he would have just been helping simply to help out another student. Lark felt a little silly almost reading into it just as she had with James. Was this really happening again? If it was... she would be sure not to upset him like she had done with everyone else. Coming to Hogwarts she didn't think that social interactions would be so difficult for her. She puffed her cheeks realizing just how behind the ball she was. Raising her eyes back to the brown haired boy, she was about to apologize when he spoke.

”Uhh, I-I remembered that you liked to draw? Maybe one day you can draw a dragon or some other creature for me.”

Her golden eyes flashed and sparkled as they bore into his. She clasped her hands together and sat upright in excitement. "Oh yes! Of course I would love ta do that for you!" Lark always kept her drawings to herself for fear of being judged or criticized but something told her that Dale would be gracious about her drawings. Plus, if that was what he wanted she could absolutely do it for him.

"I've never 'ad anyone really ask me about that." She felt a blush spread across her cheeks realizing how over-exuberant she had been at his request. "I'm sorry, is just..." Lark smiled brightly. "I'm honored you would even be interested in that."

How different Dale was from anyone else she had met at Hogwarts. Honestly, from anyone she had ever met for that matter. She would be sure to do her best to fullfil his wish for a drawing. Hopefully it would be good enough to show how much she appreciated his company and his help. His company...

Lark swallowed as she looked away and brushed a stray lock of silvery hair behind her ear, a small streak of pale pink spreading from where her fingers had touched before fading as she returned her hand to her lap. Wondering if he was waiting to finish up so he could go about the rest of his day, Lark thought how else to extend their time. Something tugged her insides at the thought of him having to leave.

"Are you hungry?" She hoped it wasn't a sudden question.

Dale hoped that Lark didn’t find it strange that he remembered something so small, it might have come off as wired, after all the only reason he knew Lark drew is because he saw her doodles in her notebook from the day he first helped her. Dale hoped he wasn't coming off as a know it all or condescending at all, he tried to explain things as best as he could, but most of the time when helping other students he would just read off things he remembered reading from textbooks.

Lark sat up in excitement and clasped her hands together, Dale thought she looked very cute with such a bright smile on her face. "Oh yes! Of course, I would love ta do that for you!", Lark said with a very happy tone and an even brighter smile. Her smile reflected on his own face, for some reason just to see lark happy also brought him some happiness of his own, he wondered if this was strange or not.

"I've never 'ad anyone really ask me about that." Lark said to him, Dale let out an internal sigh of relief, he was glad Lark didn't find it strange that he remembered the fact that she drew."I remembered that you doodled a little in your notebook when I first helped you out." Dale said to her. "I'm sorry, is just... I'm honored you would even be interested in that." As Lark said that, Dale smile grew even wider, "Well, if I remember right, then your very good at it!" Dale said with a kind voice. Dale leaned back a little and tucked in his legs to his stomach and then wrapped his arms around his legs, he felt a little cold and it was a comfortable way to stay warm.

"Are you hungry?" The question seemed a bit random, but Dale had skipped lunch, and he assumed that she might've heard his stomach rumble a little. "I skipped lunch so I'm a little hungry. Why do you ask?
