The boy, Nikolas, clasped her hand firmly and shook, a bright smile on his face. 'Ugh.' Kaylyn thought, wanting only to roll her eyes and let out a groan. He's so cheerful. Does he realize how ridiculous he looks with that smile of his? Luckily for Kaylyn- and the boy, for that matter- she knew better than to outright say that, at least on her first encounter with someone. "Yes, Nikolas." She replied coolly, veiling her distaste for Nikolas's behavior behind an even, almost happy, tone. "Let's do well this year. After all, we are Ravenclaw. We have a reputation to uphold."

Her disgust, however, only grew further when Nikolas immediately began sharing personal information about himself, something Kaylyn had been taught was not something for your first meeting with someone. Who wanted to know right off the bat how Kaylyn's magic had been discovered? Clearly, this boy's parents had neglected to teach Nikolas that was not something you asked about when you've just met a person. No matter, Kaylyn could just inform Nikolas of this herself.

"It is a bit rude, actually, at least, that's what my parents have taught me. Personal matters are not first meeting material." The condescending tone in her voice could not be missed, not even by the most socially unaware person. "But I suppose I can tell you. I was ten, and I was upset by my score on a test. I accidentally blew up all the pencils in the classroom." Kaylyn's ears went a bit red- this was not a story she enjoyed telling people- and she decided it was best to change the subject to avoid further embarrassment. "So I suppose you are not from England, given your rather strong accent. Ireland, perhaps? Maybe Scotland?"

"Oh, well I didn't know. Sorry fer comin' off rude then. I'm the first in my family tha's a wizard so I don't know the formalities. People in my town are usually blunt an' to the point." he would say. Though we would listen to her story. "And ah, fire. Fire was common fer me growin' up too." he would say.

As he was probed for his origin, and she got it correct, he would beam. "Yep. Ireland. Limerick, to be exact." he would say. "Lovely place. Lot o' old castles. If yer into tha' sort of thing." he would say. he would then cease a few minutes talking, and take a few nibbles off his chicken, and more potato.

After finishing his few bites, he would turn to her again. "So, what subject are yeh most lookin' forward to studying? fer me, so far, definitely astrology. Though I fear history class, was always bad at it even in muggle school. Tha' reminds me...I need to send an owl soon...Me pals at school would be wondering where I am this year." he would say, thinking aloud on the last bit of his sentence. His gaze fell an his smile faded a bit as that reality sunk in. He was a muggle no more. All his friends were at his old school.

'This boy talks a mile a minute' Kaylyn thought, a glaze sliding over her eyes as she listened to Nikolas's seemingly endless ramblings. She had asked a simple yes or no question and he'd somehow turned it into a five paragraph essay. Insane. Despite the growing dislike for her bubbly, happy House mate, Kaylyn kept a pleasant smile on her lips, repeating her parents advice over and over in her head.

'You only have one first impression. Make them see you how you want to be seen.' The words ran through her mind, drowning out the voice of Nikolas and bringing a genuine smile to Kaylyn's lips. "Mhm. Ireland." She hummed absently, trying to remember what exactly Nikolas had been saying. She needed to make this impression a good one, make it known she was an intellectual with high goals. 'Ireland, Ireland, Ireland. What to say- perhaps mention that's where you were born? Yes, that should work.'

"I've heard Ireland is beautiful." She said in a matter-of-fact way, nodding her head. I've never truly been- but I was born there." She smiled slightly before eating some of her pork in tiny, polite bites. Once she'd finished chewing and swallowing and had run her tongue over her teeth to ensure no bits of meat were stuck, Kaylyn allowed herself another smile. I'm excited for all the subjects. I suspect I will excel in them, though we will have yet to see. Kaylyn shrugged as if the matter of her performance in classes wasn't important to her before nodding and offering a sympathetic pat on the back as if she truly cared about the fact that Nikolas had left Muggle friends behind.

"I'm sorry." Her voice was soft and sweet, almost completely covering the exasperation lacing her tone. "Leaving behind all of your friends must have been so difficult. I can't relate much, but I do miss my mum and dad and Amelia quite a bit."

"Well, lass I hope yeh make it out there some day. It really is beautiful. As fer me mates, well, if I simply tell 'em I got good enough grades tha' I got to go to some school in I dunno...Sweden they'd believe it." he would say with a nod. He would return to his food, and would also taking nice, polite bites despite coming off as very brutish. As she proclaimed she will excel in everything, he would chuckle, though not in a way as to demean her. More inspired by her confidence. "Well, with an attitude like tha' and the hard work to match, I'm certain yeh will be. Yeh seem the super smart sort, anyhow. Would be lucky to 'ave a study partner like you. But we'll see what happens once classes roll around, eh?"He would say.

He would return to his food a moment, finishing all that was on his plate and downing the pumpkin juice that had appeared before him. He would wipe his face clear with the towel provided and let out a satisfied sigh. "Whoever makes the food did wonderful work. I think I read somethin' about house elves. Whate'er they are, cheers to them."he would say. His gaze would travel to the ceiling, catching the stars and the moonlight. "E'en though the ceiling is enchanted, it's still pretty. They didn' explain much how they enchanted it, but I wish I knew."he would say, not necessarily to her, but more thinking aloud.

Kaylyn was close to rolling her eyes at the boy, exasperated by his lack of awareness of how done she was with this conversation, but something he said stopped her. She was midway through placing another piece of pork in her mouth when he offhandedly complimented her, saying she seemed super smart.

An unexpected warmth crawled along Kaylyn's cheeks as she processed his words, trying to figure out how to respond. She'd never been genuinely complimented, not really. Anytime her classmates had called her smart it was in a judgmental manner, but Nikolas, even if it was due to his ignorance of Kaylyn's feelings for him, had called her smart with no ulterior motive. "Oh." Kaylyn said, placed her fork down and staring at her food, guilt weighing down on her. He was so nice- how could she treat him so horribly? "Well, I thank you for your confidence in me. It's much appreciated."

Kaylyn tried for a smile but it faltered and fell off, leaving the girl feeling vulnerable and unprotected. She had to regain control of this spiraling situation, and Nikolas had just provided the perfect way for her to do so. "Oh, yes, the ceiling!" Kaylyn's voice was loaded with a bit too much enthusiasm, and she told herself to tone it down or Nikolas might grow suspicious of her. "I read through all of Hogwarts: A History and A History of Magic, and, well, basically all books that even briefly mention Hogwarts, and nothing actually explains how they enchant the ceiling. I'd love to be the woman who figures it out. Do you have any goals or aspirations for while you are here?"

"Of course, lass. I can't wait to see how well you do." he would say, adding onto the compliment, his gaze still affixed to the ceiling. As she mentioned she'd read ahead, and wanted to figure out how the ceiling worked, he would grin wider. "If you figure tha' out I will happily pay several hundred galleons to learn tha' secret." he would say, absolute seriousness in his tone.

As she questioned him about what he was looking forward to learning, he would look to her. "I dunno. Every area of magic I can? I wanna be the best wizard I can be; a goal I set fer meself. Though If I 'ad to choose a single subject to be interested mostly in...hmmm....either charms, potions, or transfiguration. Maybe. But then again, it's still all up in the air." he would say.

He would look at her. "And what of you? what's your ultimate 'I must learn or be this before I graduate from Hogwarts' goal? I reckon you may have one; yeh seem to have really spot-on ambition too. Bloody 'ell, I reckon you could probably end up a prefect or head girl a' some point." he would say, yet again paying her a genuine compliment.

Kaylyn tried her best to raise an eyebrow at Nikolas's words, but ended up with both eyebrows reaching for her hairline. 'How is he so nice? We're competition!' She narrowed her eyes, eyebrows dropping back to their regular position as she tried to figure out if Nikolas had an ulterior motive to his kindness. "Yes." Kaylyn replied hesitantly. "Thank you. And you will be the first to know should I ever find out the secret behind the ceiling.

Kaylyn tilted her head curiously as Nikolas continued speaking in his rather exuberant way, the annoyance she'd felt towards him ebbing away. 'Maybe he really will be quite a competitor for top of the class.' She mused eagerly. 'I'll beat him, of course, but it'll be nice to have at least someone who makes my efforts worthwhile!' A grin spread across her face and she clapped her hands together. "What a lovely goal! Maybe we'll be competitors for top of the class. That would be nice, I adore a good competition."

Her eyes sparkled with pure delight, something that hadn't graced her face until now. She really did love competing with others, the thrill of winning after a long race neck-to-neck was so fantastic. And the gloating afterwards was even better. "I just want to graduate at the top of my class. What I do to get there doesn't matter much to me, so long as I'm the best. Or among the best. But yes, thank you. Being Head Girl would be a dream come true."

Nyalah slid into an open spot towards the end of the Ravenclaw. She looked around her and just surveyed all the students. She saw other first years chatting and getting along and sighed. She wasn't the best at making friends. After all being anti-social will do that to a person. She sat quietly as the food appeared. She looked at all the food and grabbed a few things.

Nyalah just picked at her food as she stayed quite and listened to the loud chatter of the Great Hall. She could pick up bits and pieces of conversation from other houses as some of the students were almost shouting to one and other. She could pick up almost full conversations by most of her fellow Ravenclaws though. She continued to pick at her food mostly just pushing it around her plate.

She was eager for adventures to begin. She hoped that somehow eventually she would make a friend or two. It was likely that she would spend the majority of her time outside of classes in the Ravenclaw common room or the library. However she truly hoped she would befriend someone. She didn't want to spend her entire Hogwarts career as a friendless recluse after all.

"Competing for top o' the class?" He would ponder. It seemed like fun, though he knew he had a lot to make up for, being muggle-born. But he was also certain anything is possible when you put your mind to it. He would look to Kaylyn and grin wide. "All right. Seems like a fun challenge. You're on."He would say with a grin. "Friendly competition is always good. B'sides, I want to see how much I can learn in a year, knowin' really, well, nothing. But don't let that stop you from correctin' anything I'm doin' wrong." he would say, knowing full well he would not know a lot and would have to pay extra attention in classes and on assignments.

He would glance up as he heard even more students being assigned their house. As he heard the reverberating shout of another Ravenclaw, he would glance up, seeing a girl coming to join them at the table. He would wave to her, and grin. As she sat alone, he would lean over and speak. "Welcome to Ravenclaw." he would say, even though he himself was sorted mere minutes ago. he would then grab his glass of pumpkin juice, and take a sip, his eyes lighting up. He had never had it before. "Oh tha's just lovely." he would comment, to no one in particular.

Sitting down at the Ravenclaw table, the room, the table, everything, was so loud and cheerful. I can't help but feel excited and happy as well, there's only one problem, I've been sitting here for a couple minutes, and so far no one has looked at me. I eat silently, but soon loose my appetite. I put on a smile anyway. I give a heavy sigh and my ginger hair falls in front of my emerald green eyes, "Why was I even put in Ravenclaw?" I wonder aloud, I shake my head and my hair falls away from my eyes. I look up when I hear laughter and see a girl with beautiful silver hair and funny, timid kid with curly hair. They're eating those jelly beans that I've heard about. I always forget what they're called. I watch them silently, taking in they're conversations and the laughter they share. I smile and feel happy for them. I open my mouth to introduce myself, but I can't make any noise. I bite my lip and ruffle my hair. A nervous habit I have. I don't want to interrupt, and I look around for other 1st years that I could talk to. I tap the shoulder of someone who looks like they're a first year and hold out my hand as they turn around, "Hey, i'm Aaron, Aaron Flynn."
