✽Avery was excited. She was also sad. She had had so much fun spending time with her friends at Beauxbatons that she had forgotten all about the family problems that constantly put pressure on her. It was nice to feel like a kid again instead of feeling like an adult at the age of 12. She walked towards the grounds where she had spent a lot of her time. It was cold, but Avery barely thought about that. All she could think about was the new letter her father had sent.
It had been nearly two months since she had last heard from any of her family. She knew they had been busy, but were they really busy enough to forget she even existed? Or did they just have nothing to say? Avery knew that the second option wasn’t the case. Her father had a lot of explaining to do. He had left her in the dark as her mother dragged her through her life. Not allowing Avery to see any of her family wasn’t fair at all. Especially since her mother probably had some terrible reason for blocking off her family.
She knew it wasn’t a great idea for her to be running around without a heavy cloak on. It was early March, but it still was very cold. There was even snow still on the ground. She knew she had to find somewhere more private to read this letter. She didn't want anyone to give her questioning glances if the contents found in the letter weren't great.
She walked along the edge of the Forbidden Forest until she came across one of her favorite areas. A tree that she always sat at whenever she needed somewhere peaceful to go. It was actually where she had encountered that beast, but she didn't care. All she needed was a sense of familiarity as she dove back into the problems of her family.
She leaned against the old tree. Finding solace in the old bark. It was the only steady thing to her in a world constantly spiraling downhill. That's probably why she enjoyed the trip so much. It was another way for her to forget about the constant unwinding and spiraling of her life. She took a deep breath, pulled the letter out of her bag, and opened it. There was no turning back now. Not now. Not ever.
Avery,
I am writing this letter to update you on your mother. She has been slowly improving after the accident. We still don't have any details about what really happened and you know why. I must write this letter quickly since your mother is about to wake up from her short nap.
Before I have to go, I must warn you. Your mother is not who she used to be. Ever since the accident, something has changed in her, and that change is not for the better. If anything, it is for the worst. I barely even recognize her now.
Oh, she is waking up. I must go. It may be awhile until I write another letter. Once I find the time, I will make sure to write to you. I love you, and I will see you soon. Have fun and be brave for me, okay?
Love,
Dad
Avery dropped the letter. It drifted down slowly until it gently laid on the snow. She was frozen there. Her mother. The one person that she had always went to for advice had completely changed. Avery dropped to the ground next to her letter. The cold of the snow seeping into her robes. She carefully maneuvered herself to where she was staring up at the sky. She knew her whole body would be soaked by the snow, but she didn't care.
The snow was the only thing keeping her from running. Hiding from the constant oppression she had faced ever since she had lost contact with her family. She closed her eyes. It was the only way that the tears wouldn't fall. All she wanted was to have a normal family with normal parents. Like things used to be, but because of her mother, everything had changed.
Avery laid there for what felt like hours, but was only about half an hour. She knew she had to finally get up because the snow was beginning to make her face and back feel numb. That wasn't a good sign. Avery quickly jumped to her feet and began to run in an attempt to get feeling back into her bones.
She got lucky that she was able to feel a slight tingle in her back, head, and arms. She decided that she had had enough of nearly freezing to death, so she picked up the letter and stuffed it in her pocket. Then she slowly walked back to the castle where she decided to go and get cleaned up before heading down to dinner. She didn't want to raise questions as to why she was very wet.
Avery threw her wet clothes onto her bed and changed into a clean pair of robes once she had gotten back. It felt nice to be dry again. Then she braided her hair into a simple French Braid before heading out of the portrait to the Great Hall where she would eat dinner. ✽
