Lying was an easy thing to do, objectively. Keeping up with a lie, however, was much harder to do, and it even sounded hard. Memorizing things you lie about, the exact dates and times, the people that were(n't) there, being consistent... that's why being truthful was important, to Gem. Not because it was necessarily the wrong thing to do, no, what was he, Gandhi? But because keeping up with everything, his dignity, (or lack thereof) the acting, it got to a point where it just wasn't an option-- guilt weighed, much like a heavy backpack that you'd keep on only one shoulder because using both straps was something only babies would do.

This is what he thought about, staring at the lake, waiting for a good friend to appear. It was lonely, the water was calm, and while it smelled... not so great, vaguely of shite actually, it wasn't horrid either. He sat near the edge of the bank, his knees pulled tightly against his chest, the tips of his shoes at the very edge of the muddy waters. He preferred his own company, often. It gave him time to think. Right now, he was considering the fact that he'd have to ask if being here was even allowed-- he hoped it was, because it would be weird if he sat here like a duck, no knowledge of the bare minimum of rules...

Being a duck would be so nice, he thought, free, uncaring, no school, just flying, hangin' around in lakes... yeah, that's the life. Do ducks know that they're ducks, though? Do they have a special duck language? What if they call themselves humans in duck-anese? He was so caught up in the prospect of possibly being a duck that he didn't notice his leg slipping down the mud, shouting in complete offense when he'd discovered that his pant leg was covered in mud.
Great, just fantastic. Not even ducks have to worry about dirtying their clothes, god damn-

He stopped himself before he could even think to belt out anymore internal profanity, only because he realized he probably looked like a crackhead rocking back and forth at a Lake, staring at the water like he was playing chess with it-- all because Veronica was taking some extra time. He smiled at the thought of her, though, her soft-looking orange hair, her warm eyes-- she just radiated warmth, no wonder she was a Gryffindor. He was no longer in a state of distress over his pants, and was instead letting his brain distract itself with a nice, fuzzy, warm feeling at the pit of his stomach. If he had his guitar with him, he would sing her a song and show her how to do it too-- so much for that, maybe next time... huh.

Telling the truth is such a simple thing, most people can do it easily. It’s simply easier to say what’s on someone’s mind, rather than fudge the events. Simply telling the truth, no matter how harsh, is always the right thing to do. You don’t have to keep the same story, remember faces or names of people that weren’t there, or about the events that did(n’t) happen. At least that’s what Veronica believed, however she never listened to that. She’d lied about so much in her life that the guilty feeling that one should get is no longer present. It just comes naturally to her. Lying was the only way she could “survive” in her hometown.

Veronica thought back to her home as she was walking through the halls of Hogwarts. She had a small smile on her face as she remembered the good times she had playing pranks on the Muggles back home. She knew better than to do anything dangerous, but she did use a few of the items one of her sisters would send her from the joke shop. However many times her friends tried to get her back, she’d prank them ten times harder.

As she continued her walk, a soft chuckle left her. Her mind then began to drift to Gem, her newest friend at school. He was quite a nice boy. She loved how he seemed to like pranking other students, specifically ones he didn’t quite fancy. I wonder if he’ll ever want to prank people with me. Oh that’d be lovely.

Veronica’s smile grew once she had reached her destination, the Great Lake. Deciding to play a little prank, Veronica snicker up behind Gem, who was sitting on the edge, with a now muddy pant leg. Oh Gem! Already muddy? She shook her head. Taking a huge deep breath, she shouted, “BOO!” When she saw him jump and land more in the mud, she rolled over laughing.

Gem’s apparent lack of attentiveness around him was the causation of the following events; more mud, laughing, and also, lots of cussing. He didn’t expect Veronica to jump out of the shadows, a brief yap of alarm squeezing out of his throat when he slid down the bank, saving himself from a most horrid, mildly disgusting fate in barely the nick of time. He wasn’t sopping wet, but his pant legs and socks were all muddy and gross.

“Oh, come on!” He cried dramatically, scooting himself back up the bank, sulking at the damage done to the newly washed clothes. “God, I oughta throw ye in there, ye bloody mank!” He sniffed, pulling his knees back up to his chest. He looked back at the perpetrator, unable to keep a smile off his cheeks when he saw her face. There she was, in her full glory; bright orange hair, warm green eyes, skin probably as soft as skin could get... was he staring?

He shook his head, looking down at his muddy sneakers, gesturing next to himself so she could sit.
“Well, in spite ov the fact ya ruined this week’s clothes,” he paused to stare at her intensely, mostly as a joke. Mostly. “It’s good ta see ye came.” The more he thought about that, the worse it sounded in his head— it was like he was implying she wouldn’t come. Which vaguely implied she was a bad friend, which she wasn’t. Shit.
“N-not that I didn’ think ya would! It’s joost good. It’s good to see you. Here. While I am. Us. Togethah." He stopped himself, inhaling to try and relax himself. "I'll stop talkin'." He stared at the water, his fingers tapping lightly on his knees, unspeaking-- not one single bit of body language could tell you what he was thinking right at this moment, so much so that not even he knew what he was thinking about.
"Wot... wot 'ave you been oop to? I mean, while we were ehm, separated." That came out awkwardly, but he was already tumbling over his words. "Like... make any new friends at all? I bet ya did, you're probableh one ov the most popular girls 'ere! Don't see why anyone wouldn't want ta be your friend." He swallowed, turning his head back over his shoulder to look at her, appreciate her company a little more.

Veronica fell back laughing when she heard Gem let out a yelp of surprise. She began to laugh harder when she saw how muddy his trousers had become. Her laughter continued to the fact that she was laughing so hard that she began to cry. “Oh, come on” Veronica suddenly found it hard to breathe. She sat up, holding her sides that now aches from her laughs. “God, I oughta throw ye in there, ye bloody mank!” Veronica smiled as a small sigh of content left her lips. “You're completely right mate, but ye won’t, cause we’re friends.” She offered her signature smile, although she felt a pang in her chest when she said friends.

Now fully recovered from her laughing fit, Roni brushed a strand of her hair behind her ear. She made the wise decision to braid her bangs into a crown to keep them out of her face. She could feel Gem’s soft gaze on her petite form, causing her to blush, but she didn’t mind. “Well, in spite ov the fact ya ruined this week’s clothes, it’s good ta see ye came. ” Roni gave him a confused and slightly hurtful look. Did he think I wouldn’t show up? I know I was late, but does he really not have that much faith in me?

Roni’s eyes grew wide when she watched his expression grow in shock, then fear when he must’ve realized what he said. “N-not that I didn’ think ya would! It’s joost good. It’s good to see you. Here. While I am. Us. Togethah.” She stifled a laughed as Gem tripped over his words. “I'll stop talkin'.

Veronica sighed as she grasped both of Gem’s soft hands within her own. “Don't ye dare stop talkin’. I love hearing yer voice, Gem. It’s extremely comforting to me.” She blushed while looking deep into his beautifully dark eyes. “Wot... wot 'ave you been oop to? I mean, while we were ehm, separated.” Roni had to think about that. What have I done lately?Like... make any new friends at all? I bet ya did, you're probableh one ov the most popular girls 'ere! Don't see why anyone wouldn't want ta be your friend.

Now that was a lot to swallow. Gem though she was popular? “M-me? Popular? Psh! I’m no ‘er close. I’m awkward, clumsy, an extreme extrovert, which comes off as overbearin’ most o’ the time.” She began to twirl a strand of her hair, a nervous habit she picked up a few years back. “But te answer yer question, I really haven’t done much since we last spoke. I’ve stayed in my commons most o’ the time. What about you? What have ye been up te?” Roni turned towards the water, pulling her knees towards her chest as she watched the sun’s reflection dance across the surface of the lake.

Gem chewed his tongue, growing a bit shy when she said she liked his voice. Well, shucks. He didn't think his voice was anything special, but if she thought so...

"Awe, I don't fink you're overbearin'." He said, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. It was something his mom used to do whenever he was nervous or upset, take his hands and squeeze them, nice and gentle, so he knew someone was there to listen to him, no matter what. "Yeh, makes sense. Nofin' mooch has happened 'ere, aye? I mean, I guess that's a good fing, but..." He trailed off, hoping he didn't give off the impression he was bored, but... well, that's kind of what he was.

"I 'aven't done much, actualleh." He hesitated, blinking down at the ground for a moment-- something happened, he just wasn't sure if he should share that quite yet. "Sorreh, got side-tracked. Anyway, ehm... no, joost about same as you. Hung out wiv friends, did me work, nothin'... crazy." He swallowed thickly, watching her toy with a piece of her hair. He sat himself up, straightening his back out a little bit.
"Right, okay. I've got a question, and it's a bit weird, and you don't have ta answer it if ye don't want to, but like... is it true that girls... like," He fridgeted, sticking his tongue to the roof of his mouth. "Do they ask boys out by starin' at em' and hope they notice?" He crinkled his nose up a little bit, hoping he didn't cross a boundary. Well, she was older than him, right? She had to have known these things.

Roni loved how he was able to reassure her so easily. “Awe, I don't fink you're overbearin'.” It was strange at how relaxed she felt around Gem. She found it interesting that she could really be herself around him, her quirky and odd self.

As Gem began to explain how the past few weeks have gone for him, Roni got the smallest impression that he was slightly bored with summer. It was a great thing that school was only just around the counter. Out of the corner of her eye, she watched as Gem straightened himself. Sitting straighter, tilting his nose into the air ever so slightly, and puffing out his chest, it was almost as if he were about to take on the biggest man alive.

Right, okay. I've got a question, and it's a bit weird, and you don't have ta answer it if ye don't want to, but like... is it true that girls... like,” She could sense where he was leading with this. “Hmm?” She gave him a quick look that urged him to continue. “Do they ask boys out by starin' at em' and hope they notice?

Veronica bit her lip as she glanced back at the water. He finger twirling her hair began to twirl a bit faster. “W-well...” She blushed darkly as she tried to think of the correct words to say. “Its different per girl, I guess. Some like ta stare at the person they like, while others show their interest by talking ta their crush, or by sending ‘em gifts. Personally I try to do a bit of each. If there is a young man,” She glanced towards Gem, blushing slightly darker. “that is kind, yet doesn’t mind being firm when he has to be, and has a wonderful sense of humor, along with wonderful conversational skills, then they’d catch my fancy. Although, I love a man who is loving, and can be there for me when I’d need a shoulder to cry on, or just relax with.Like you. She wanted so desperately to finish with, but decided against it.

Her mind was beginning to go into overdrive. Have I stared at Gem? Probably...I really like him after all.....But what if he doesn’t like me back? What if he’s asking because another girl has caught his interest....what if I missed my chance to confess? Her face still portrayed its peaceful expression, yet her eyes showed her fear, fear of disappointment, fear of rejection.

Why do ye ask? Some girly catch yer fancy?” Roni felt her hands getting clammy. Why would she ask such a thing? Somewhere deep inside she wanted...hoped....wished....prayed that she had somehow caught his attention.

Gem waited patiently for a response, quite satisfied with the one given to him. He'd noticed how dark Veronica's face was getting, but he didn't know if he should say anything about it-- the reason why felt so obvious, in his face, but he held his tongue. He didn't know if she even liked him, he could've been overthinking and being selfish.

“Why do ye ask? Some girly catch yer fancy?”

Gem stopped, squinting a little bit, mostly in thought. I mean, yes? Yes. Probably. He exhaled, his shoulders tipping forwards and his posture falling flat, just like his expression. Maybe this wasn't the right question to ask right now, he didn't even know how to respond to that because he never actually knew when a girl caught his fancy-- when they were pretty enough for him to go all goo-goo eyed over them? He reached a hand out, drawing a weird stickman running from a blob of... something, in the mud.

"It's a polar bear." He said, glancing up to smile at her. "E' polar bear says tha' I can't tell you whether I fanceh a girl or not or else he'll 'ave to kill me." He raised his eyebrows, cheeks burning a light red out of embarrassment-- he probably looked so stupid right now. "You hear him? Yeh. That's the Polar Bear Oracle, his claws are big and thick, I'd die if he even looked at meh. So, tha' being said, I can't say a single word. I'm cuttin' it close by just tellin' ya about him."

Roni froze. “A Polar Bear?” She snickered. “A polar bear said ye can’t tell me if ye fancy a girl?” She didn’t believe him for a second. Roni rolled her eyes towards Gem. Pulling her knees closer to her chest, she sighed slightly in defeat. Her gaze was fixated on the merky water in front of the two students. “Why won’t ye tell me the truth? Am I not trustworthy?” Now she’d done it, swallowing in self doubt.

He probably believes that I’d get jealous. But what would I be jealous of? She glanced over at Gem. Bloody hell, who wouldn’t be jealous of the lucky girl to catch his fancy. Who am I kidding? He won’t even know what I’m talking about... Veronica sighed. “L-listen...I...” She couldn’t even say it. God he must think I’m such a looser!

Her gaze returned towards the water. She shut her eyes shortly after. “I...um...I’m sorry, Gem. I shouldn’t ‘ve asked. I was curious is all.” It was strange how she felt about the boy next to her. They’d only just met, yet she had a strong warm feeling inside her chest. “Alright, I can’t do this anymore!” Veronica turned to Gem, a fire of determination lit within her emerald eyes. She gripped ahold of his hands, and decided that if she were gonna tell him how she felt, she might as well do it the way she does anything, by singing.

Without you, I feel broke
Like I'm half of a whole
Without you, I've got no hand to hold
Without you, I feel torn
Like a sail in a storm
Without you, I'm just a sad song

She smiled as a dark blush covered her cheeks. She did it, she finally told him. Oh god, I confessed! Slowly her smile gave way to panic. “J-just forget what I just said.He probably doesn’t even feel the same way! I just made a fool of myself!

Gem intended for it to only continue as a joke, but she seemed to take it a bit more personally than that. Not trustworthy? Where did she get that from? He panicked, his voice coming out in sputters.

"No, no! N-no, no. Tha's not wot I m-"
"I...um...I’m sorry, Gem. I shouldn’t ‘ve asked. I was curious is all."

Aw, shite. He'd messed this whole thing up, hadn't he? He toyed with the hem of his sweater again, pressing the cotton between his thumbs fumbling with it so he could listen to her speak-- he really, really needed to learn how to shut his mouth. He felt his mouth open up to speak when she snapped, her voice coming out in a small shout- oh, wow. Was she about to tell him off? That was terrifying to think about.

While he mentally braced himself to get an earful in the most vicious way possible, he was instead greeted by a lovely singing voice. So lovely, in fact, that he didn't even seem to process what she was singing until after she looked upset that she even had in the first place. Her face seemed like a sea of emotions after that, a smile, realization, and then panic. He felt weird, not knowing what to say. He stared at the river, then over at her, then back over at the river before she could return his gaze-- thus resulting in Really Horribly Awkward And Unwanted Eye Contact.

He liked Veronica, he did. He liked her so much, she was pretty, she was sweet, she had a personality with substance-- but he refused to let himself succumb to an empty relationship. She deserved better than some guy who thought she was pretty.

"Um," He blinked back, exhaling quietly. Crap. What was he supposed to say? He didn't have a substantial amount of brain cells, all of a sudden. "I uh... Well, I," He needed to stop talking immediately. Actually, he should stop existing too. Should he kiss her? Wait, what? Oh God, his brain was a mess. He didn't even know how to kiss. "Sorry. I'm really dumb." And now he was being a baby because it seemed like he was fishing for sympathy. "Sorry again. You're really amazing and I like you. I'm just- I don't. UGH," He wanted to rip his hair out with the way this was going. "I'm not mad at you. I'm not, I just don't know how to talk. I'm really bad at it. I'm sorry. I really am." He was going to die.

Roni was at a loss for words. Gem is sorry? What does he have to be sorry about? She looked back down at her feet as they had suddenly become the most interesting thing. “Gem, yer alright. You have no reason to apologize.” She had to force her eyes to look up at the young boy next to her. “I...I need to be honest with you and myself. I fancy ye, Gem Stuart.

Roni had never really met anyone before that she wanted to be around, except for Gem. He was a fantastic person, a bit shy and awkward at times. He was even good looking. Although confessing wasn’t entirely what she had intended to happen, Roni knew she needed to say something before it was too late.

She began to fiddle with the soft fabric of her skirt as she thought about what the next few seconds would entail for their friendship. “I...I understand if you don’t like me in that way, but I wanted to tell ye before it is too late.” She closed her eyes and mentally glared at herself. She knew she wouldn’t be received, just a feeling that’s followed her for a while.

The feeling has honestly stuck with her from a very young age. Especially after her mother seemed to abandon any thought of showing her any affection. It’s going to happen all over again. I’ll be rejected, and won’t know what to do! Roni took a deep breath and laid back in the grass, ignoring the cool feeling of the mud against her legs. She honestly didn’t care how dirty she got.

Roni opened her eyes and looked over at Gem, wondering why he’d been so quiet. I scared him. He’s probably appalled by my confession. She curled up into a ball while attempting to think of a way to move on from this horrid subject. “L-Let’s move on? H-how’s sch-school? I hope it hasn’t been too difficult?
