It was a late Sunday morning. By now, even those who had slept in were preparing for the day. Elisa had already finished breakfast, and was heading with a determined pace towards the library, a place she frequented way too often. Today, she had a few sheets of blank parchment neatly tucked in her satchel, along with a bottle of ink and a quill.
Arriving upon the heavy oak doors of the library, she went in and strode towards her usual corner, where a desk and stool were, unoccupied. Sitting down and rummaging in her satchel, she took out a heavy leather book - her history textbook. It was time for an essay.
Elisa carefully dipped her quill in the ink bottle, staining the tip of the owl feather with dark blue ink. She let it hover a little while in the air before setting it lightly on the yellow parchment. With every movement of her hand, the quill traced loopy, neat letters. Soon the first page was scribbled with rows and rows of words.
Taking a little rest, Elisa laid down her quill and looked up. Just then, she saw a young girl walking through the rows of bookshelves, carrying in her arms a massive, leather bound book. Elisa only needed a glance to tell which book it was, and when her brain did reach the conclusion that this was, indeed, the book Elisa had just finished reading, her facial features presented a mixture of awe, puzzlement, but also a twinge of eagerness and some sort of excitement. She'd have to ask, because - how could such a young girl read such a complex book?

Jade had woken with the sun that Sunday morning, feeling especially energized and ready to tackle the day. The fresh coat of snow covering the campus refreshed her, as snow always did. Winter was one of her favorite seasons, and Jade always enjoyed the snow. She had dressed quickly and then headed down to breakfast. It had been rather early, by most people’s standards, so she had eaten alone, seeing that none of her friends were awake quite yet.
After eating breakfast, Jade had made her way through the halls of Hogwarts towards the library. She had no homework to catch up on, but there was a book she had been wanting to check out for days now, and she finally had the time to get started on reading it. It hadn’t been available the last time she had checked, but that had been over a week ago. Surely the library would have it by now. Hogwarts should consider getting more copies of some books, Jade thought idly as she entered the library. That way we’d have to wait less to read them.
Jade made her way towards the shelves where the book was supposedly stored, skimming the titles until she found it. She found it! It’s here! She thought excitedly, grabbing the book from the shelf. It had an ornate, leather-bound cover, and was rather massive. It was rather awkward to carry, but Jade made due as she walked between the shelves, looking for a place to sit. The library was almost entirely empty this morning, and Jade was able to find a table that wasn’t already occupied.
Smiling to herself, she placed the book down on the table. It made a loud thud as she put it down, and Jade cringed sheepishly. Even though no one was here, she felt embarrassed about making such a loud noise in the library. It’s fine, she told herself, taking a seat. No one even noticed, probably. To take her mind off her mild embarrassment, she took a moment to admire the cover of the book. It was a gorgeous cover, leather-bound and everything, with ornate gold letters spelling out the title. The book was about some more advanced arithmetic, something Jade had been wanting to catch up on. Hogwarts didn’t offer math classes, but Jade wanted to continue her learning. And now I finally have the opportunity. She smiled and opened the book to the first page, beginning to read.

Elisa finally decided that she would have to find out who was this first year planning to start reading a book like this one. As far as she knew, the subjects this book treated were very advanced for a first year, even so for a second year like her. For the first time, curiosity won over shyness, and moments later Elisa found herself striding quickly through the rows of towering bookshelves. She was wondering whether to turn left or right when the familiar thump of a book on a table alerted her senses, and following the sound, she turned the corner to find the girl with the large book sitting by a table.
Hands behind her back, Elisa took a deep breath - she would find out why and how this girl was reading this book, however embarrassed Elisa might be to walk up to a stranger. "Hey there!" she started, grateful that her voice was steady, "I hope I'm not interrupting anything. I was just- sort of curious about... this book you're reading."
"I mean-" Elisa started again, finding the explanation that she gave to her visit very unclear, "I've read this book too, and it's about rather complicated arithmetics- it's pretty advanced for a first year..." She gave the girl a look of praise and admiration, thinking that it could replace some lengthy verbal communication. No, Elisa had never been the best at social interactions.⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤

Jade had just begun to read when she heard someone speaking to her. A bit surprised, she looked up from her book to see an older girl standing by her table. "Hey there!" The girl said. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything. I was just- sort of curious about... this book you're reading.” Jade frowned slightly as the girl said that. Why is she curious about it? There wasn’t anything special about the book. Jade just wanted to keep up on her more mundane Muggle skills, though some of the other students would probably be surprised by that. Am I not supposed to be reading this kind of thing? She wondered with a hint of panic. But, no - if I wasn’t, someone would have told me by now. “I mean - I've read this book too, and it's about rather complicated arithmetics- it's pretty advanced for a first year…” The other girl continued, helpfully clearing up Jade’s confusion on the matter.
“Oh, um, I just wanted to - keep up on my skills, you know?” Jade said, a bit haltingly. “I, uh, used to go to Muggle school, so arithmetics was a regular part of the curriculum there. Hogwarts doesn’t teach it, so I wanted to try to keep my skills fresh.” She knew she was rambling a little, and could feel herself getting a bit flushed due to embarrassment. “I don’t know if this book is ‘at my level’ or whatever, but it’s one of the few ones I could find.” That wasn’t entirely true - she was fairly certain the subjects covered in the book were pretty close to what she had been learning in school. But… a part of Jade felt like downplaying her abilities, for whatever reason. Maybe it was because the older student surprised her, maybe it was just her general anxiety.
“So… why did you read it?” Jade asked hesitantly, attempting to turn the conversation towards the other girl before things got overwhelmingly awkward.

"You know- the subjects treated in the book are advanced for both of us - or at least others our age", she said. Then, as though wanting to prove the authenticity of her words, she added, "Actually, my tutor was the one who recommended this book to me. He said that it was equal to what we learn in third year if we chose arithmetics in our options at Hogwarts. You must've been really good at muggle school then!"
Elisa offered a kind smile at the first year, hoping that it would make her less anxious. Then came the question, "So... why did you read it?"
"Oh- not so different from your reason for reading it, I suppose", Elisa answered, "Like I mentioned earlier, I have private tutor at home and he taught me the basic arithmetics when I was small. Now, since I'm at Hogwarts, he teaches me only during the vacation periods - Hogwarts doesn't teach arithmetics until third year. Last summer we covered a bunch of subjects in it, and uh..." She hesitated. She didn't want to be seen as a show off. "It wasn't too difficult for me so we moved on to harder things. And that's how he recommended this book to help me revise... And that's also how I was so curious why you were reading it, given its advanced level." Elisa hoped her explanation was clear enough and not too much of a ramble.⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤OOC Notes: I'm assuming Jade has a very advanced level in arithmetics. "You know- the subjects treated in the book are advanced for both of us - or at least others our age,” the older girl said. Jade nodded in acknowledgement, she knew that the book covered relatively advanced materials. “You must've been really good at muggle school then!”
Jade nodded again, a bit shyly. “I… was more advanced than other people my age,” she admitted, still feeling a bit hesitant to admit her abilities, even though it seemed like this girl was also advanced and therefore wouldn’t think Jade was showing off. “I suppose I just wanted to make sure I stayed on top of my learning. I don’t know how useful this sort of thing will be, in the wizarding world, but it seemed a bit silly to not work on my Muggle skills as well.” Jade realized she was rambling a bit, restating things she had already said, but it wasn't like she could take the words back and say something more put together.
She paused, something the girl had said earlier coming to her mind. “I’ll admit, I didn’t realize Hogwarts had an arithmetics class…” Jade wondered if the Hogwarts class would be similar to math class back in Muggle school, or if there would be a more magical aspect to it. Maybe there’s a… connection between magic and numbers? Somehow? The idea seemed a bit far-fetched to Jade, but… who knew. Maybe magic had secret mathematical depths to it.
She considered asking the other girl if she knew what the class would be like, but then realized that she probably wouldn’t be able to compare it to Muggle school. She had mentioned a tutor, which meant she was probably a pureblood, or at least had some sort of wizarding heritage. Private tutoring wasn’t very common amongst Muggles, but it seemed to be very popular among wizarding families. Still, it’s worth a shot… “Do you know what’s covered in the class?” Jade asked. “It sounds interesting.”

Elisa tilted her head slightly, thoughtful. After a moment of hesitation, she looked back at her interlocutor, her gaze seemingly still distant, lost in an array of thoughts. "No... I actually don't...", she articulated, frowning slightly. Then, pulling herself from her endless pondering, she focused her eyes once more and, this time more seriously, answered, "No, I've never considered what we can actually learn at Hogwarts, now that I think of it. Since arithmetics is only taught for third years and above, I've always supposed it would cohere to the subjects taught in muggle middle school..."
"I wonder how I never thought about that", she continued, smiling to herself, "I guess I'd have to search that up to satisfy my curiosity, now that you've raised the subject."
Finding herself incapable of coming up with a new conversation, she grinned at the girl as friendly as she could, and nudging her head towards the way she had come, she took her leave. "Well- I won't bother you further with your reading then - I have an essay to finish myself."
"If you ever want to hang out together, I'll be in the library! The name's Elisa, by the way, Elisa Wagner", she continued, leaving her name for the girl. Jade listened patiently as the older girl spoke. The whole interaction was rather… unexpected, but she was finding it oddly enjoyable to talk to someone else about a subject she found interesting. It wasn’t every day she met someone who was interested in talking about muggle subjects in a magical school. “Since arithmetics is only taught for third years and above, I've always supposed it would cohere to the subjects taught in muggle middle school..." The girl was saying.
“I suppose that makes sense,” Jade agreed, nodding. “Though Hogwarts is so weird about some Muggle things, I wouldn’t be surprised if the class managed to be different somehow.” In all honesty, Jade wasn’t entirely sure how much the wizarding world understood about Muggle school. Most people she encountered seemed to find the concept odd or out of the ordinary, so she wasn’t sure how a Hogwarts professor would view it.
"If you ever want to hang out together, I'll be in the library! The name's Elisa, by the way, Elisa Wagner,” The girl - Elisa - concluded.
“Oh, I’m Jade. Jade O’Reilly,” she said, caught a bit off-guard by the sudden introductions but not really minding. “See you around!” She said, waving as Elisa left to continue her essay. Jade returned her attention to the arithmetics textbook on the table in front of her, smiling to herself as she began to read through the problems.
I think I may have just made a friend.
