“Mom, I’m Sick”

I don’t want to go to school
I know, this fever is so cruel!
Oh, wait. It’s playing hide and seek?
No, Mom, it’s not some new technique
I’m actually sick, I would never fake
I feel it in my bones–they actually ache!

It’s Tuesday and now my elbow is bent
My knee has a dent!
I think I have fallen from a height
I still just don’t feel quite right.
No don’t call a doctor, I’ll be fine here
It’s best if you just steer clear!

Mom! Mom! Come downstairs!
I can’t go to school: look at my hair!
It’s all falling out, I know: it’s outrageous!
Something is happening, it might be contagious
Keep your distance, stay away!
But once you’re gone, I’ll be okay

Now it’s Thursday, I’m not going back
Look at that, my fingers are black!
My tongue is swollen,
My voice has been stolen!
I’ve suffered through measles and mumps
Rashes and bumps

Friday’s the last day of the week
And still I’m in bed, feeling weak
We’ve tried all sorts of remedies
But still, look at all my extremities!
I’ve fought this illness with all my might
I think I see a bright white light!

Today is Saturday, you say?
Well then, I’m going out to play!
Don’t bother checking, I feel just fine
See, look, I won’t even whine
I know it’s strange, but now I’m alright–
No, please don’t make this a fight!

Mom says that the line is ringing
I can hear the telephone singing
I say “I can’t come out today
My mom won’t even let me play!
She says I’m grounded for lying…
I know, it’s mortifying!”

Next time I want to be sick
I don’t think lying will do the trick
Next time I’ll try something new,
Wait, I’ve just had a new breakthrough!
