The journey to a new home.
She could not believe it. Fyriel was truly packing for her first year at Hogwarts. She had hardly been able to sleep the night before the trip. All night she wondered what house she would be sorted into, if people would be nice, which classes she would be able to follow as a first year and so on. "Don't forget your toothbrush and something to read on the train!”, her mum pointed out from downstairs. "Yes mum", Fyriel answered hastily. Waking up from her daydream, she jumped out of the reading chair and continued packing for Hogwarts.
As Fyriel walked down the stairs to load her travel bag in the booth of her dad's car, she tried to remember what she had forgotten. It was no use, as she could not recall. Undoubtly she would think of it once it was too late. She reached the dining room and there stood every family member waiting to say goodbye. Her mum was trying to hide the tears in the corners of her eyes. She heard her dad mumble something through his teeth to her sister. Her sister instantly darted to the pantry and returned with a small parcel. It was square-shaped and wrapped with red, shiny paper and had silver dots spread across it. Fyriel enthusiastically accepted the parcel. She impatiently tore open her gift and inside she found a furry, stuffed animal in the shape of a badger. The badger had shiny, black eyes and a striped scarf in Hufflepuff colours. When Fyriel first heard of Hogwarts and the different houses she could be sorted into, she immediately desired to be a member of Hufflepuff. She looked over to her mum, who had a smirk and held two thumbs up. "We will be crossing our fingers for you dear.”, her dad said. "Will you let us know which house you are sorted into as soon as you can?", her sister asked quietly. Fyriel replied, "Of course I will! The first owl I'll send will be for you, Liv."
Fyriel sat in the back of her dad’s car, nervously picking on the rim of her jumper. It was fuzzy with faded red and grey stripes. She was very fond of it, she found it a few weeks earlier on her weekly trip to a vintage boutique. Fyriel always went there to wind down after a rough week or if she wanted to find hidden treasures. She also wore a blue, worn-out pair of jeans and bright yellow sneakers. Next to her was the badger she got from her family. If she were going to be homesick, she would be able to use it as a comforter. She really wished she wasn’t going to be homesick. "Don't sit in the library every day", her dad said to her while driving to the train station, "You can explore the castle and make some new friends, maybe you could ask them over next holiday." "Yes dad", Fyriel sighed. She couldn't help but wonder if she would not make any friends at all, but kept that to herself. The car slowed down because the traffic stopped for a red light. It was pouring rain, which was usual at this time of year, and it made Fyriel smile. She always felt comforted by the sound of raindrops hitting the windows and car tires rushing over wet roads. If she weren’t so nervous about her first day at Hogwarts, she would have probably fallen asleep in the car. "Here we are dear, do you want me to come with you to the platform?” Fyriel's dad asked. "No dad, I will figure it out, besides you know how you get when you have to say goodbye. Better to get it over with in the car.", she replied with a grin. "Alright Fy, make sure you don't forget your travel bag. Do you know which wall you need to go through? I can come with you if you wa-". "Yes dad I know which one, you've explained it a hundredth times. Don't worry about me, I can always ask if I see another witch or wizard.”, she cut him off. "Time to go then", her dad answered with a sad look in his eyes," Here goes my little girl off into the big wizarding world. You know I love you?" "Of course dad, I love you too", she muttered out with a quiet voice. She wasn't used to hearing that from her dad. She always knew but they never said it aloud.
Fyriel looked around King's Cross Railway Station and there were heaps of people. She felt a bit lost and perhaps a little embarrassed. She was sure she could find the platform on her own but now she began to have some doubts. "Onwards we go", she said to herself determined to find a way. Between trying to read all the signs and not being trampled, she was doing rather well. Fyriel already spotted a sign that read >>Platform 8-12>> . "Then that's where I'm headed", she thought with confidence. In-between platform 9 and 10 she saw the red brick wall that she had to run through. Abruptly she felt a tingle rising up her spine. "It can't be that difficult. Just like dad explained to me", she thought. "Run towards the wall and keep going until you arrive on the other end. Hurry out of the way before someone bumps into you from behind.", she remembered him saying. She tightened the grip on her travel bag. She took a deep breath, then looked at the intimidating wall in front of her and hoped she picked the right one. One step forward, two steps, three... and off she went. She sprinted as fast as she could and lunged into the wall. Before she caught on how far she had gotten, muggle London had already disappeared from view. Out of breath, she stood on the other side of the London she knew so well. Soon she realized she was still standing behind the wall and quickly took a few steps aside so she wouldn't be run over by the next witch or wizard.
There it was. Even bigger and more monumental than she could have ever imagined. The Hogwarts Express. About 19 ft. of red and black steel, fluffy clouds of magic puffing out of the chimney and humungous rail wheels. Fyriel was very impressed with her type of conveyance. She was ready to start her new adventure in the wizarding world.
