The ballroom, a huge, grand affair, with dance floors perfectly polished, and tables neatly up against the side of the wall. It was a perfect place to hang out, for clubs or as little friend groups, to play games or practice dancing with a sweetheart. Usually, it had one or two students inside, at least, and the atmosphere was enchanting. Today, none of that was true. Today, the atmosphere was one of fear. Nothing about the ballroom had changed. Nothing except for the fact that it was inhabited now by a solitary little third year.
He was sitting down in the middle of the floor, staring hard at a leatherbound book that lay on the ground in front of him. Almost mocking him. And the harder he stared at it, this, his book. The book he had created with his own hands and mind as a gift for someone who would now never receive it, the harder he hated. Hate was all that was left to him, now. It was him, and his hate, against the world. Most people were content to simply live, but Kaegen needed a compass. He could not simply sail, he had to sail towards something.
Without purpose, a goal, he had nothing at all, and the fact he had nothing at all was too great a burden for the little boy to bear. He couldn't face it, acknowledge it, look at the emptiness. To the boy, that emptiness was simply another facet of the great evil known as the dark places. To face the dark places was something he knew he was not ready for, and so he had been forced to create something to sail towards, to make his own purpose. To replace a goal, he found nothing. Nothing but emotion. Nothing but hate.
And so he clung to that hate, clung to it and focused on it and grasped for it with every fiber of his being. That hate was his lifeline, it was a reason to exist, albeit a small one, and Kaegen refused to not exist, he refused to mean nothing. It was that hate that lashed out from him, that lashed out into the ballroom and beyond the ballroom and into the passageways beyond that. Other students didn't have to look inside the ballroom, they could feel him through the door, and they shivered.
Shadows seemed to pull and pool around the little boy, torches seemed to be struggling to stay lit, to keep some vestige of happiness alight in the now chilled room. His ink black tangled nest of hair matched the darkest corners of the room along with the fraying and faded robe he wore. His grey scarf was wrapped snugly around his neck, with a dark black and blue cape tied around his shoulders. He even sported a huge umbrella the size of a staff strapped to his back, completing the bizarre ensemble.
His face was much paler than it should have been, it went beyond white into grey, the color of corpses and death. His skin was so sickly it was almost transparent, as if it were some bizarre diseased wonton wrapper stretched tightly over his face by a god who knew exactly what he was making. A monster. Even hidden behind tired, heavy eyelids the traces of vampiric blood could be seen. smoky greyish blue eyes, a calm color interrupted by a ring of bright red around the pupil. His long, thin fingers with dirty, dull claws were steepled in front of him, occasionally dipping down to touch the little book.
He rocked back and forth unsettled, feeling touches of fear he hadn't felt in days. Had it really been days? Had he kept the fear, once such a large part of him, at bay for that long? As he rocked forward again, he focused on the hate, flaring it up. He hated the fear, he hated the book and the castle and everything inside. He would not feel fear, he would not be lonely or lost. He would feel nothing but hate until death itself fell before him.

Erin could not feel the heat of his rage, his indolent wrath that came off of him in waves. Erin could not sense the chill in the air. That sense that something sinister, something dark and terrible was waiting in there. Perhaps that was why this space was empty, why Kaegen was alone. It was not by chance that this encounter would happen, Erin was looking for this curious individual. While some (most) of the girls of his year or even below have an unsavory, uncanny, carnal interest in him, Erin was not among them. Yes, she was interested in the boy. She might even find herself on top of him, but it would be far from a lustful encounter.Ability: Fearless
Race: Veela
She wanted Kaegen because she wanted to learn more about the death witches he had mentioned in the Ravenclaw bathroom. Kaegen was a skittish boy, strange, gangly and pale, he was a stand out but he often hid himself. She would have an inkling of where he was, perhaps he knew (or assumed due to his paranoid nature) that he was being stalked, hunted and pursued as he left before he could be engaged. This time he was not getting away, there was no other way out and she had heard that he went this way.
Erin looked as she always did, lightly tanned with bright blue eyes and blonde hair that was dyed a striking purple hue. She was not dressed to impress, to dance or to flirt. She was wearing the garb of a Slytherin student, because she was one. She donned the regalia of a student, and less her locks she blended in with the crowd. It was a strange choice, the contradictory conformity coupled with the decision to stand out. It was a calculated move. While she was not intelligent, she knew people. She understood them better than she understood magic, history and a number of other things she could care less about. She did not look like a monster, her cheeks were pink and flush, her skin clear. Her reputation might suggest otherwise, but pretty packages can hide terrible surprises.
Erin would enter the ballroom, it was empty. She had passed a few departing students in the hall, all of them likely driven out by the boy's malevolent aura. The fearsome presence of the dhampir was not a deterrent for Erin, perhaps it would have been better for her if it has. He was full of a rage that she could not feel any longer, metaphorically neutered by those crones.
It was ironic in the Kaegen was right, despite the fact that what he knew was derived from madness and paranoia.
She yanked the door open. The vast emptiness of the room was lost on Erin. She stepped inside, her icy eyes would scan the room and fall upon the drab, hunkered form of Kaegen Deathmote, Ravenclaw cancer patient. She would approach Kaegen, attempting to muffle her footfalls as to not startle the boy who might finally be cornered.
She should run.
She didn't.
Her shadow would loom, long and tall. It would tell him that she was there if he had not noticed her before. The door that she quietly closed. The muted footsteps in his direction. The twisted, writhing shadow that seemed to have a life of its own once it was proximal to the Ravenclaw youth. "Hey," Erin would announced once she was a foot behind him (yes, in melee) unless Kaegen reacted before she got close to him. "I have been looking for you," she added. It sounded more ominous than intended. "I need you" not in a romantic way "to tell me about the death witches. Now."

Someone was coming. Someone wasn't allowed to come, wasn't allowed to encroach on his kingdom, his walls of fear that kept out everyone. They kept him safe and someone had breached his defenses. Had broken through his hate. How, how was that possible? Kaegen was not a student, he was a god. He was a predator, he was Kaegen Fens-born Scarf-wielder, Shade-beacon, Master of the castle of avarice. He whose names are given authority by himself.
He did nothing while the figure approached, only focused inwards on his ferocity and bile and sent it rocketing to the surface, throwing the shadowy tendrils around him into a frenzy. She would turn, she would turn and run any second. When he heard her say hey in such a calm way, the boy stood up, pocketing the book into his sleeve as he did so. He stared the girl dead in the eyes, blueish grey making a suitably dramatic backdrop for the rings of red that circled his pupils and now pulsated and burned as only Kae's eyes could.
He was done with people, done with other students, done with social interactions and friends and allies. He was master of a castle with invisible walls and he liked it that way. What she had to say was indeed interesting, however. Interesting, and demanding. He didn't like demanding, not from someone who had so effortlessly crossed the intangible threshold of his castle.
"The very last thing I planned on doing today was listening to someone tell me what they need me to do. This very last thing was on the list right after get killed, and I don't expect I'm going to..."
Kaegen coughed, he had been pushing too much energy into his voice, his hate driving him to speak louder than he knew she should have. His throat hurt now, not bad enough to warrant a career as a mime, but it hurt.
"You have nothing to offer. Go away.
His hands tensed up in his sleeves, and his body rocked back smoothly, catching itself by placing his left foot farther back. It wasn't much a motion, but anyone who knew anything about fighting would recognize the maneuver for what it was. He was getting ready. To fight, to run, to do anything. He had balance in all four directions, after all.
One of his sleeves went slack, armless, only to be filled again just as quickly, but otherwise he didn't move. He kept his eyes trained on her, looking for anything, anything at all that would indicate the beginnings of a telegraph. He did notice how she looked surprisingly good. He wasn't sure good how, he just knew that he would probably describe it as "good".

There was something weird about the boy, not that Erin could place it. His ashen flesh, his tousled hair reminiscent of a cliche teenage romantic interest, less the eyes -- both blue and red. How queer. Sickly and pale, like death would take him. She would have thought it already had if he had not moved. He moved and therefore he was very much alive. "You okay?" Erin asked, not that she cared, it was one of those societal expectations she was burdened with. Much like saying how are you or what's new, you did not want them to answer but you still had to ask.
She eyed him over as she said that, these damned emotions were making her stupid. It has harder to assess the situation, to understand what she would need to do to elicit the response she desired. What did she feel? It was not fear, that blunted, muted sensation that was necessary for survival was absent. It was not love, lust or pity either. All she felt was want, not want for the boy's body -- he had Nico and every other girl of his year already in line for that. No, she wanted to know what he knew, to extract that from him. Yes, this was desire and she was demanding.
"The very last thing I planned on doing today was listening to someone tell me what they need me to do. This very last thing was on the list right after get killed, and I don't expect I'm going to..."
A bit of a leap in logic, already talking about death. "I am just looking for answers and you seem to have them," Erin announced.
"You have nothing to offer. Go away.
Erin shook her head NO. "Don't think so," Erin announced rather casually. She did not forget their previous encounter, the one where he leveled a slingshot to her head before leaping out a window. "I think they took my friend," she was referring to Thomas LeStrange "I am going to get him back" if he was alive. It had been weeks since she had last seen him, he was a pain in the ass and she did not trust him, but he was her pain in the ass. She was certainly no Hufflepuff, but the girl was loyal.
She saw Kaegan shift, tense, prepare himself. She let out an audible sigh. "And you are going to tell me everything you know," she proclaimed. She reached out, she was going for his scarf (I assume you are wearing one because you almost always RP wearing one) and if he was not wearing a scarf then the collar of his shirt. She was entering the threatening stage right now, the cliche grab someone by the collar/neck wrapping and lift them up a bit to intimidate. The method would not likely work on Kaegen, not that she knew that. In fact, it was somewhat unlikely that she would get her hands on him at all.
If she did somehow grab hold of Kaegen:
"What the fuck do you want me to offer you to know what you know," Erin would growl. Yes, growl. While she was a pretty package, she was far from a lovely, delicate creature.
If Kaegen slipped away, slipped out of his scarf, Erin missed, etc:
Erin would try to kick Kaegen in the head. Yes, the head. She was not only violent but she was also flexible.
If Kaegen does something else:
Uhh... guess we will have to find out.

She did the unthinkable. Grabbed his scarf. It was his fear that usually kept him on guard, and even though he was prepared for something, her moving forward like that was not anything that he had considered a possibility. It was a simple matter to slip out from the scarf. Before, that would have caused him no end of grief. But now? Now it was laughable that a scarf should hold him back.
He found the situation so utterly amusing that it didn't occur to him to watch for the counterattack, which came in the form of a solid kick to the side of the head. Kaegen spun around, and landed on the ground. He quickly stood back up and moved swiftly away, gingerly feeling around his now bare throat with spidery fingers, feeling the edges of huge swaths of scar tissue that seemed to mark the area where once some lacerations had rent his neck. He hadn't actually seen his own neck in years, and it felt odd to have it exposed.
But all he did was laugh. It was a grating, hoarse, voice crack of a cackle that reverberated throughout the ballroom. A mad laugh that was only made more intense by the pain throbbing in the side of his head.
"You have me mistaken for something you can kill."
In a flash, a slingshot and a wand were in one of his hands, their retrieval having been the purpose of his earlier foray into the depths of his robe, and a solid stone was in the other hand. He didn't need proper wand form to cast his spell, and it would serve him well to keep his distance. He moved his head awkwardly to the side, still not used to the lack of scarf. It felt alien, weird.
His sickly skin had done a horrible job of patching whatever near-fatal wounds had caused the scarring, making the tissue look like something from a horror movie that had strayed a bit too far into realism when working on the cast's makeup. When was the last time some other student had fought him, the bathrooms? Right, that would have been the last one. His slingshot was loaded in another second, primed and ready to let loose, even as he scurried further back.
"Kaegen Deathmote, Fens-Born Sc- Shade beacon, master of the castle of avarice. This is who you have attacked, and this is who you now face."
If Erin moves forward, Kaegen will try to take her down with slingstones, keeping his distance. If she manages to close the gap, he will go up, either using a failed flippendo to launch himself up (fleependo) or the broom strapped to his back. If she somehow manages to grab another hold on him, he will opt to lash out, biting down into the girl, and ripping at her face best he can.

Griseldis didn't really get the chance to visit the ballroom during her first year. After she finished her patrol in the Great Hall, she decided to spend her free time to explore the ballroom alone. She heard from other students about how beautiful it was inside, they described that the ballroom had a wide-open space, there were giant portraits hanging on the wall. And the whole area was decorated with flowers that performed the air with soothing sweetness.Interacting with @Kaegen Deathmote and @Erin Ryan
She could imagine how it would look like if there was a ball in the night, many couples listened to live music and dancing under the massive candelabras that were hanged high from the dancefloor. Delicious desserts and drinks were served on the tables. Romance in the air and laughter could be heard. Now that made a few friends, she thought that maybe this year she should participate in a ball this year. Kung Fu didn't count as one at all even they had a few dance movements with a sword that was called the Sword Dance. So Griseldis pretty much had zero experience of dancing.
Hmm...Maybe I should bring someone who knows how to dance before coming here. Oh well, it doesn't hurt to take a look in the ballroom. There is still plenty of time for dancing practice. Griseldis thought to herself with a nod, always being positive.
Finally, she arrived at the ballroom, but just when she was about to open the door. Her excitement faded instantly and replaced by concern. Something is wrong! Griseldis was on alert, she could sense the heavy tension inside the ballroom without opening it.
She carefully opened a small gap, only to peek inside to see what was going on in the ballroom. There were two students there, a boy with black hair and a girl with purple hair. Both seemed to be quite familiar...wait...these two...she recognized them!Ability: "Fearless" activated
"And you are going to tell me everything you know," That voice, there was no doubt it was Erin, the older Slytherin girl she met on the Hogwarts Express. And the boy she was facing. Griseldis let out a surprised gasp and covered her mouth with her left hand. It was the Ravenclaw boy she bumped into that day in the hallway. Who would have thought, that she would meet him in such a place again! She remembered Raine said his name was Kaegan.
The conversation they had at this moment didn't sound friendly at all, she could hear hostile in their tones. She watched in horror when Erin went to grab his scarf and kicked him right in the head. He spun and landed on the ground, then strangely, he only laughed but not in a cheerful way.
"You have me mistaken for something you can kill." His voice was cold and dangerous that made her slightly shiver. She saw how Kaegen took out his slingshot and a wand. "Kaegen Deathmote, Fens-Born Sc- Shade beacon, master of the castle of avarice. This is who you have attacked, and this is who you now face.", he threated, having his weapons ready and even Erin didn't seem to be afraid, more like she was prepared to challenge him.
At this point, Griseldis knew a fight is about to go loose and she could not let it happen. She immediately busted into the ballroom and shouted at them loudly, "STOP!!!", she quickly went to stand between them and held up her hands trying her best to stop what they were about to do. "I don't know what is going on between you two, but violence is not the right answer!", Griseldis looked at Kaegen then at Erin with a frowned face, it was the first time she spoke to someone with a serious voice.

They say those who wander are not all lost, but in this case, it wasn't true.
Millie was lost. Again! Hogwarts was a giant castle with a magical school inside, it was impossible to not get lost at least three times a weak. The adventure had started out as a little wander around the second floor. Looking through the hidden corridors, this and that, then she found herself on the fourth floor. Where, she had found the staircase, was unknown. That being said, she knew she needed to find a place where she knew.
That place happened to be the Ballroom. And, at first she wasn't remotely aware of the fight going on, as she couldn't really hear it. But then she heard someone shout something like "stop!" and Millie took notice of what was going on.
She recognized Kaegen and the prefect, both she had seen once before. But the third girl she didn't recognize one bit. It was impossible to know everyone in the school, though.
The Prefect quickly ran in between the fight and stopped them. Millie hesitated for a moment. She could run in as well, and help the Prefect in stopping the two, or she could just run away. The latter seemed the most positive, but she was not put in Gryffindor for being a coward.
After her hesitation, Millie sprinted behind the Prefect, standing between the two. "Yeah! Fighting is never the answer!"

She grabbed Kaegen's scarf, her grip tight as she wrapped the strip of cloth around her forearm as she attempted to tighten her grip and restrain the sickly boy. The scrawny, skeletal youth would slip away. Perhaps he was nimble. Perhaps he was just so emaciated and Vitamin D deficient that there was nothing left to hold. She was not prepared for his escape but she was an experienced brawler, the girl had more enemies than friends. She had no time to assess the situation, to formulate a plan. She was fighting with instinct alone -- a battle of brawn, sans brains.
Erin would attempt to boot the dhampir in the face.
She would not see the aberrant scars but even if she had she probably would not react with revulsion. Despite her pretty facade, she had a number of battle-scars herself. He would laugh. It was an odd laugh, it reminded her of dry leaves scraping over the pavement on a late autumn night.
"You have me mistaken for something you can kill."
A slingshot and a wand were gathered in one of his hands and a solid stone was in the other hand. Well, his aim was going to suck unless he grew a third arm like the freak he was. "If you were dead, you wont be able to give me what I want," Erin replied. Reasonable from her perspective. "Just a good old-fashioned ass kicking," she was confident and while she lost on occasion she was more used to winning than losing. Of course she never fought --
"Kaegen Deathmote, Fens-Born Sc- Shade beacon, master of the castle of avarice. This is who you have attacked, and this is who you now face."
"I ain't going to remember all that shit!" She did not even know his name, now she did. Well, he said it. Erin was just not going to remember it. He had his weapon drawn. Erin charged Kaegen. He would pelt her with a stone (12), the round rock would hit her in the shoulder and it would break the skin. She was unprepared for the weird-ass muggle device (2). It hurt like hell.
She was still closing the gap. Kaegen would try to back off. A failed fleependo (1) even. Failing a spell on purpose for an alternative effect, while brilliant, can also critically fail. Erin, now bleeding from her shoulder wound, the pellet partially out as the Slytherin attempted to rip the stone from her own flesh with her fingertips. Blood was starting to stain her ripped shirt. Kaegen attempted to leap onto his broom, a Shooting Star -- a broom not well known for its speed. In fact, it has been said that a Shooting Star was often outstripped by passing butterflies. She could take him as long as he did not get out of her reach!
"STOP!!!"
A voice shouted from the ballroom door. Erin did not recognize the voice, not that they had not met before (I assume that this is taking place in September then?) but rather she did not dedicate the Gryffindor's voice to memory.
They were further in the room. Erin would not recognize the Prefect's authority, if she even knew that Griseldis was a Prefect. She would have kicked Professor Browne in the pelvis had she not been frozen solid. Fearlessness and recklessness certainly seemed to go hand-in-hand for the girl.
She would make a mad grab for whats-his-face (5), but Kaegen was quicker (9). He would board his broom and the broom would ascend at a snail's pace out of Erin's reach. What does a girl do when the boy she wants to touch is out of her reach? Throw something at him. Hit him hard, take him down. Erin would grab a chair and hurl the chair at Kaegen. "Get down here you damn weirdo!"
Griseldis would attempt to stand between them, well in the way of Erin's throwing. She made a better wall than window it would seem.
"I don't know what is going on between you two, but violence is not the right answer!"
All Griseldis achieved was slowing the part-Veela down. She would scowl and adjust her grip on the back of the chair she was holding as an intended projectile to take the lively cancer patient down. She would attempt to shove Griseldis out of the way so she would have a clear shot at Kaegen. "You fool!" Erin shouted. "Who knows who is going to get killed if I don't find out what that idiot knows!"
Dramatic -- yes.
Accurate -- well, in her mind, yes. In reality, not even close.
Another student ran in, where the hell were they all coming from.
"Yeah! Fighting is never the answer!"
The second one cried. "Merlin, help me take him down before he gets away!" Erin's voice broke a bit as she said that, she actually sounded serious. She actually sounded a bit desperate. "The weirdo knows stuff I need to know. Don't make me make a path through you." That also sounded serious.

Just a trick of the lighting they said...

Empty with good reason
Oliver sat on the corridor floor. He looked at his watch and swore. How could he forget Erin's order, it was to be their first act of friendship.
"I won't fail you, buddy ol' pal," he whispered to himself and nearly giggled as he very slowly hurried towards the ballroom. He slowed as he neared, inhaling deeply and stepping up.
Standing in the door way and scanning the situation, Oliver's brows raised. Kaegan on his broom? A couple of girls Oliver assumed were trying to defend him? Erin trying to throw furniture? Oliver was pretty surprised, he knew Erin got up to no good but this was just a messy situation. The girls weren't even third years, if he could remember correctly. Which bothered him, Oliver didn't like lower years interfering with older students affairs. Oliver hoped they'd get out of Erin's way as he wouldn't hold back from blasting them across the room if they tried to defend someone like Kaegan. Nobody ever ran to Oliver's safety, he'd be damned if a dangerous and disturbing individual was getting rescue now.
He looked up at Kaegan. It was a mix of fear and the need for justice that made Oliver dislike the Ravenclaw. He had done bad things and Oliver felt he never truly paid for it. If he did, he wouldn't be here. Oliver drew his wand, ensuring himself with Erin's throwing hold on the furniture that she wanted him down.
Oliver stood in the doorway, not moving out into the open. He was short and was using surprise to advantage. He wouldn't alert Kaegan of his presence, he was honestly too afraid to. Oliver went for a sucker punch style attack. He raised his wand and pronounced his well trained flipendo. He had cast so many of these that he could say it in talking voice volume. Light surged from his wand and with ill intentions he aimed the spell square at Kaegan's torso. He trusted his aim at this range, practicing on moving projectiles at greater distances.
"Flipendo."

Empty with good reason
Kaegen was moving up at a respectable speed. Nothing incredible, but he was gaining height, which was all he really wanted. The ballroom was immense. Make it to the top, and there was shit anyone could do about it. The slingstone had hit the girl, not nearly as well as he hoped it would have, but well enough. It had dug in to her shoulder, which was fine in terms of damage. Things were quite honestly mostly going his way. Or at least they were until he heard a loud voice scream "STOP".
The last thing on his mind was stopping, so the boy just kept on rising up, already a good 15 feet in the air. He recognized the loud girl from somewhere, and although he couldn't really place where that was, he knew she wasn't directly harmful. She was loud girl, or something like that. Bear, maybe? For lack of a better name Kaegen stuck to loud girl, although her presence was doing little to stop the scene from unfolding. Kaegen was starting to feel a hungry rage, could feel it bubbling up, coursing through his veins. He could shred them, he knew he could destroy all of them and laugh as their blood bubbled out onto the floor. He was better than they were, we was a predator and they were the prey.
But not even vampiric fury could defeat the training that had become a part of Kaegen, no matter how hard he tried to suppress it. Fear was your friend, fear kept you alive, you should always listen to fear. So he kept going up, utterly ignoring the girl who now stood next to loud girl, shouting about how fighting wasn't the answer. Of course fighting was the answer! Fighting showed you was in charge, it showed you was right and wrong and who got to write history itself. Who could escape and who could challenge it. Fighting was the ultimate answer, and anyone who said otherwise was just too weak to take advantage of it.
The chair almost got him, however. (9, 7 accuracy) Kaegen rolled to the side as one of the chair's legs caught him across the leg. The most it would leave would be a bruise, however, as his roll did just fine at impact dampening (7, 15 evasion) and before long, he was even higher up than before. He could hear fine, and even responded to the purple haired girl, despite his better judgement telling him to save his breath.
"Goodbye. May you remember this as the day you almost reached Kaegen Deathmote."
It was the girl who alerted him to the presence of the boy, rather than the boy himself. The girl who barged in asking for griz or grass or something like that. His head turned just enough to notice her, and that was when he saw a floating ball coming towards him. A spell. (9, accuracy 9)
The chair might have caught him off guard, but this thing was not. No way was he going to be hit twice, he hated being hit, and hated them, and hated everything to do with either. He was going to go all the way up, to the large chandelier, and then he could just live there. He had food and water with him, because he always did. The chandelier symbolized a sort of refuge. But first he had to move out of the way of the spell, which he did so with ease, allowing himself as he ducked down low, allowing the flippendo to simply pass overhead (20, evasion 15)
"Was that... it?"
Kaegen wondered aloud, not sure if the little fat boy was actually serious about hitting him. The spell chosen shot a slowish ball, and besides, he had dodged it so easily. He was well out of throwing range by this point, even a slow butterfly had an adequate speed for his needs, and the floating candles, magical lights and decorations served as pretty decent cover.

Keeps ascending at a decent rate
