An Unlikely Friendship Closed

It was early Saturday morning and James had woken up with the strong ache of homesickness twisting in his stomach like a knife. He keenly felt the absence of his old bed as he woke up in the blue blankets of his school bunk, and elected to stare at the star-painted ceiling for a while, reminiscing on all the things he might never do again, or at least not for a long time now he’d chosen the life of the Wizard.

He missed waking up at 9:30 on a Saturday morning with Pete, after a long night of Mario Kart challenges and movie marathons. Watching Star Wars rebels as his Dad made pancakes, and secretly eating the what remained of Friday night’s snacks as a preliminary breakfast. He missed his Mum, who still read to him sometimes in the evenings, just because they both found it nice, a small moment of unspoken bonding between the kind woman and her son. He missed his dog, Arthur, who would sometimes climb into bed with him after a particularly hard day of school and offer sympathetic snuffles and snorts.

He stood up and packed his Jurassic Park backpack with a box of Jaffa Cakes, a couple of Star Wars comics and a novel. He wriggled into his jeans and a soft hoody and made his way into the halls.

He wasn’t entirely sure where he was going, but he just needed to walk and it wasn’t long before James found himself outside. Though it was still warm during the September days, the air was cool as the wind blew softly over the surface of the lake.

James let out a deep sigh and took a seat beneath a tree, as he stared out over the lake. He wondered if these bouts of homesickness would ever stop plaguing him, or if the deep ache of longing would plague him every week. He picked up a large rock and threw it into the murky waters in front of him, watching it make a satisfying splash.
