The library was pretty quite, at least at the spot Mylo was in, hearing only the soft chatter from some other students a bit away, the soft crackling of the fire and the pattering of rain on the windows. Mylo had wanted to go outside and do some reading, but books and water really weren't a great combination at all, and they didn't fancy ruining their books just so he could sit outside. So the library was a great second option.

They'd come into the room and had been very happy to see that it wasn't insanely busy, probably due to the fact that it was close to the beginning of the year and thus not many students were stressing about exams and such yet. But Mylo hadn't come to study, at least not for any subjects they currently had.

Mylo had heard some older students talking about runes, and that they had so much homework to do for it. Which had interested Mylo, they had learnt some runes when he was younger, and they had always fascinated him. So having grabbed a few books of the shelves he started reading about them, preparing themselves for when they would learn about them properly in years to come, a bit sad that he wouldn't be learning about them this year. But that wasn't to be helped.

The chairs near the fire were so comfy though, and the fire was not to hot and not too cold, and they slowly sunk away into the books about runes, not noticing anything around them.

The beginning of Mahlioz's third year was proving to be difficult. Not only was the work getting harder, but there was of course the whole thing about the summer, the fact that she'd never get to see her real home again. One of the few things that made the ordeal more bearable, though, was the fact that this was third year, the year in which they finally got new classes. Mahlioz had been excited to take Study of Ancient Runes for quite a while now, perhaps a good year, and Divination had also interested them ever since they'd first spoken to the Divination professor in the Slytherin common room. So at least there was that. New subjects, new things to learn, new things to distract their thoughts.

But of course it was the Library that did the most good. It had always been like that. The scent of the books, the sounds of pages turning... and if you added studying for Ancient Runes on top of that, well, it was a great recipe to get unpleasant ideas out of one's head.

The thing was, when Mahlioz got to the section with all the Runes books, many of the ones she needed, for those just starting off with learning Runes, seemed already to have been taken. Sure, this was the Hogwarts library and she was bound to find more copies hiding somewhere, but now she was curious. Was someone else using them? Could they help her study?

They spotted a pile of books that seemed suspiciously Runes-y next to a chair near the fire. Had someone left them there? They made their way over, only to realize there was actually someone in the chair, reading one of the very Runes books they needed. The kid in the chair seemed younger than Mahlioz, but perhaps they were just a shorter third year. Feeling only slightly bad for interrupting their reading, she approached them and asked, "Hey, are you studying for Ancient Runes too?"

It was peculiar, that she had decided to talk to someone instead of going to find the books she needed. But she'd been struggling a little with the double meanings of Runes, and maybe this person would be able to help her. Besides, it would be nice to meet someone who was as interested in the subject as her.

They told me all cages were mental, so I got wasted like all my potential
This year Ava was trying to put herself out there more. Her summer had been quite eventful, and all she wanted was things to go back to how they had been. Before she was worrying about all of the family drama that had taken place years ago.

She didn’t have the greatest track record surrounding her grades. In fact, she was barely passing the majority of them last year. Whether that was because of her poor study habits or some lack of smarts that her classmates had.

Whoever said studying in the library was the greatest, was clearly not the greatest themselves. In her experience, the library was the perfect place to nap. Or attempt to steal restricted books. Or plan escape routes for future chaos.

Studying? Never. She could see a few familiar faces around her that she was itching to chat with, and was using all her self control to not go over and converse.

One of those faces? Mahlioz, who was chatting with another student about runes. Ava was sure that subject was somewhere in her stack of homework to complete.

Ava leaned over and glanced around nervously. She was more worried that one of them would shush her instead of engaging in the conversation that may have served partially to allow her to avoid the stack of work.

"I don’t think runes could be interesting unless it’s some crazy prophecy. When am I ever going to use it?" Ava complained, unaware and content in not knowing that one of the three was willingly reading about the subject.

Mylo had gotten a decent way through the current book they were reading and was currently on one of the chapters about the history about Elder Futhark, something they found fascinating as they were learning about the origins of the writing and how it was used. Mylo was looking forward to taking the class next year and learning even more about the ancient writing system and how they tied into the magical world around them.

As they were wondering if the runes they were reading about had any practical applications in the magical world and if they could maybe find a book on that in the library at some point he was brought out of his thoughts by a student approaching them and talking to them, startling him a bit.

"Oh, uhm... hey. Oh, no. Just doing a bit of reading as I've don't have much homework at the moment." Realising the student before them likely was actually taking the class and might actually need the book they were reading or one of the several others that could be found in the pile next to them Mylo turned to her.

"Sorry, did you need this book? Or any of the others?" They quickly offered, motioning to the pile next to them, hoping that their slight nerves at potentially keeping a student away from important study wasn't too visible. As they waited for an answer a second student came up to them, this one seemingly not as enthralled by runes. In fact she seemed to think them completely useless which Mylo wholeheartedly disagreed with, and unfortantely for her Mylo knew several uses for runes and for some reason their anxiety that would usually stop them from rambling had left the building.

"Oh, there's actually several uses for runes. Many old texts written in old English are actually written in runes so if you want to be able to read those you need to be able to translate them." They mentioned, pointing to one of the books that lay closed in front of him which was completely written in Elder Futhark. "Also if you work for the ministry of magic uses them for administrative purposes so if you want to work for them you'd need at least a basic understanding of the written system if not also of the history behind them."

Realising the ramble they had gone on that likely wasn't welcome due to the fact that one of them didn't like runes in the slightest and the other was studying for it and thus likely already knew this information Mylo felt their previously disappeared anxiety come back in full force. Leaving them trying to subtly calm themselves down by tapping their fingers rhythmically on their thigh and hope that the other two didn't mind the info dump they had just been unwilling participants of.

The kid Mahlioz had approached seemed a little startled. They said that they were just doing some reading for fun, since they didn't have too much homework. That answered one question the Slytherin had had - they were definitely not a fellow third year, because homework had been dumped on them rather rapidly at the beginning of the year. The kid went on to ask a question, but Mahlioz didn't fully catch it as they were interrupted by another student.

Ava Winchect was someone Mahlioz did not know particularly well but had absolutely heard of - most Slytherins had, at this point, and the girl didn't seem to dislike the infamy, at least on the surface. She did, however, seem to dislike runes, which was altogether unacceptable. "Aren't prophecies just divination? I didn't know runes came into the equation." Perhaps she'd missed something in class. She would have to look into it. Were there runes on tarot cards?

The first kid had a lot to say to Ava's question, despite supposedly being a not-third-year. Actually, the whole Ministry of Magic use Mahlioz wasn't even aware of. But she did have a very good point to add on. "That's... pretty interesting. Runes are just cool, honestly, in my opinion - I don't think they need a reason. They're like a secret language. They hold information from our ancestors. It's a kind of magic we don't have access to with wands." Hmm, perhaps Mahlioz wasn't the best of people to be talking, considering they liked math just because it was cool, and disliked it whenever it applied to real life. "I mean, come on, it's like graffiti but magic." And yep, they had to bring the art factor in. Runes looked epic; that was just indisputable.

They turned to the younger kid, no longer interested in studying in the least. This was already an interesting conversation, and he was looking into runes in his free time? He sounded like just the kind of nerd Mahlioz was. "Sorry, what did you say your name was?"

Ava glanced between the two of them before rolling her eyes, finding that she probably shouldn’t have been shocked to find nerds at the library. She bet neither of them needed to study as badly as she did. They both discussed runes excitedly, although she wasn’t sure what about the topic could be considered exciting. It was far too close to academics, which she despised.

Her many pages of untouched homework left untouched on the table, and she flipped one of the assignments over to begin doodling. She was hardly an artist in the artsy sense of the word, but she had a flair for drama. She was also creative, which she put into use in her schemes often. She drew rough sketches of each floor, starring one of the towers.

Her mind raced with ideas as the two spoke, particularly interested in something that Mahloiz had said. Runes were like graffiti, but with magic. She wasn’t particularly skilled in graffiti, but it had the same basis as her destructive pranks. She smirked as she began to mark off spots in corridors and in classrooms, idea forming.

“Ordinarily, runes sound very…dull.” She decided, glancing between the two. “But in practice…theoretically, they could make a great prank. Leave notes written in runes all over the castle, have students pick them up, have them all say something insulting about the professor. Like ‘You stink’ or ‘Your hair needs cut’. And once the first years can’t figure it out, they bring it to the professor to translate…”

She giggled, continuing to mark off heavy traffic areas, especially ones where first years liked to hang out in. She wondered if she could leave some notes outside. Maybe under a rock to prevent them from flying away? What about the students who could read runes, would they see the notes and laugh, or bring them to the professor?

Ava also wasn’t quite sure how to professor would react. Although she was taking the class, she usually passed that time napping or planning more chaos. Never listening or observing. And definitely never learning.

She leaned back in her chair, pushing the floor plans toward the other two and watching to see their reaction to the idea. Maybe they would laugh, maybe not. She hoped they would agree to do it with her, because she didn’t even know how to read runes, much less write them.

It seemed like at least one of them didn't mind the info dump they had just received, which was a bit of a relief although the other one seemed less interested in the subject having started to doodle in a book.

As the other student continued to speak about the runes Mylo couldn't help but agree, runes were cool. They had so many uses and he just loved the look they had when things were fully written in the ancient writing system, enthusiastically nodding along with what the older student was saying they realised they hadn't introduced themselves yet as they asked for his name.

"I'm Mylo, you guys?" They returned the question, not wanting to seem rude.

The girl who had seemed quite uninterested in the conversation she had stepped into seemed to perk up at the mention of graffiti, seemingly having come up with a prank she could play. Although Mylo wouldn't classify it as a prank but just plain bullying, and as much as their anxiousness hadn't left their body yet one thing they didn't like was people bullying others. Taking a deep breath they turned towards the girl that had suggested it.

"Honestly that doesn't sound like a prank to me, that sounds like just straight up bullying. Which is against the rules of the school and just etiquette in general so I'd think again about that idea." He stated, even surprising themselves at what they had just said. They usually weren't this confrontational but the giggle the girl had let out after she had voiced her idea had apparently set them off as they couldn't stand the idea of people thinking bullying was funny.

What also surprised them was the fact that their anxiousness didn't spike after having said their piece, although it was still their they could manage it with their tapping. They just hoped that the girl he had just told off wouldn't react strongly, as they weren't the best with confrontation, in start contrast with what their previous statement would tell people.

Mylo was the kid's name, and Mahlioz suddenly felt stupid for not asking for their pronouns. At least they gave her a chance to redeem herself when they asked for the other two's names - of course, they didn't know Ava, they had come a year too late. Though she was surprised the rumors hadn't gotten to them yet. To be fair, it had been a while since it had all blown over. "I'm Mahlioz, she/they pronouns," they responded to the other's query.

Well, at least the two runes nerds had managed to get Ava somewhat interested in the subject, even if it was through ideas for pranks and secret codes to insult professors. While Mahlioz mostly sided with Mylo here - and she was definitely biased out of excitement to meet someone else who liked learning things for the sake of learning them - she could see part of Ava's point. There was even a tiny fraction of her that thought it might be ever so slightly funny, especially when it came to certain professors she didn't particularly like. And the professors could deal with it, they were adults.

But mostly the interest was in the secret code part. Mahlioz rather liked secret codes, whether it was making them, learning them or trying to figure them out. They weren't as hard to learn as languages and they were full of logic, which made them so perfect. Perhaps that was what had attracted Mahlioz to them in the first place, their codelike nature.

Mylo, however, didn't seem to find the sort of almost-agreement Mahlioz had with Ava, which was fair. It was bullying, and they could agree that it was rather frustrating when a "prank" turned out to just be typical meanness (though professors, they knew, dealt with much worse than some silly insults). The way Mylo told Ava off was almost entertaining, considering he was a year younger than her - he almost sounded like a prefect. And of course, he was right, but his reasoning they knew probably wouldn't change Ava's mind.

They decided to try and defuse the situation. "I can't say I particularly agree with the idea of pranks, or bullying while we're at it - they distinctly separated the two to make it clear they didn't really think insulting a professor was bullying per se, as mean as it may be - though I know that won't change anything to the amount they're done around here. But I do like the idea of secret notes. I mean, runes could be a good way to make secret messages for your friends." She paused, reflecting. "Though I guess if someone finds them, it wouldn't be too hard to go ask the professor, so that could backfire. And you're not supposed to write them outside of class, since they're magic and everything. Maybe there's a way to disable them."
