Potions Partners

James walked into the Potions classroom feeling a little at sea... It had been the first time in the few weeks he'd spent here at Hogwarts that he wasn't with at least one of his friends from the Slumber Party.
The last time he'd found himself wandering the school alone, he'd run into Savannah Rose, and that had proven to be a less than fun experience.

Entering the large stone room, he felt the blood rush from his face, the cool air causing him to shiver. He felt, again, as he had on the first night. As if his body weren't really his, uncomfortable in his own skin. The Professor stood at the front of the room, and James noticed the kindness in his eyes. He'd heard rumor that Potions was a particularly difficult class but he knew he could do it.

He thought about what his mum had told him, back on in Flourish and Blotts, what felt like years ago.

"You'll do brilliantly at that school, James McMurtrie."

He took a deep breath and quietly slid into a seat, next to a pretty blonde Ravenclaw girl.

He fished out his textbook and placed it on the table in front of him, tracing the leather on it's cover and then turned to the girl.

"Hey, I haven't seen you around. I'm James - I'm -uh- a Ravenclaw too."

Delilah had always been one of those annoying people who liked to get to class early. There was something satisfying about having first pick of a seat, to her anyway. Potions was a class that Delilah was dreading but also extremely excited for. She knew it was an important subject. Her mother had always told her;

"Without potions, most wizards and witches wouldn't be alive today."

She wasn't sure how true that was, but there had to have been some sort of merit to it. Of course, this meant that her mother was expecting her to do exceptionally in the subject but Delilah had heard on more than one occasion that it was one of the hardest subjects to master.

She had just finished pulling out her book, parchment and quill when a fellow Ravenclaw sat down beside her. She looked over at him for a split second and then went back to gathering her belongings. She looked back at him as he spoke.

"Oh, I'm Delilah." She said, offering him a soft smile. She held her hand out to him and shook his. "Are you a little bit nervous for this class? I am." She questioned, biting down on her lip softly.

James nodded vigorously. She was right, he was terrified of potions. Of all the subjects it felt like this was the easiest to accidentally kill a classmate in. He wasn’t sure, but he guessed that the line between potion and poison was dangerously thin.

“What happens if I mix something wrong and it turns out blowing up or making somebody sick. Like, we’re learning how to make a forgetfulness potion in the next few weeks. What if I drink some and it wipes my memory forever? Do you reckon that’s ever happened to a kid?”

He fidgeted with the hem of his jumper, looking through the textbook in front of him.

“Look it says here that if you don’t heat a cure for boils correctly, you can end up getting covered in boils. Arh, that sounds ghastly!” He looked at his new classmate, “I’m sorry... rambling. It’s been a big week. Have you done Transfiguration yet? The professor is so cool! But the class is really hard.”

He wished that his other friends were with him. Not that there was anything wrong with this girl. It was just that the Order of the Dawn made him feel so safe.

It was then he realised that he may be able to recruit the girl.

“Hey, have you ever heard of this Dark Witches Society thing? What’s your stance on it?”

Delilah smiled as the boy spoke, she felt exactly the same as he did. She was beyond worried about something going wrong with one of her potions, it was something she didn't even want to think about. She let out a soft laugh as he apologised and she shook her head.

"You're fine, you're fine. I completely understand." She assured him, it was scary after all. She didn't like the thought of someone being hurt because she'd messed up her potion. It wouldn't be a nice thing to carry around on your shoulders.

"The Dark what Society?" The blonde asked after hearing the boys last question. "I can't say I have, but it doesn't sound too inviting." She admitted, raising her eyebrows slightly. She assumed the other Ravenclaw wasn't in it, he wasn't a witch, but it didn't sound like the type of society she'd be into. Maybe he was trying to recruit her into it. Or maybe he was trying to do the opposite and steer her away from it.

"Why? What's it about? Is something going on?" She asked the dark haired boy, biting down on her lip softly. Delilah liked to know stuff. She wasn't a gossip, she just liked having knowledge on as much as she could.

“So, there’s this group of girls, and actually a few boys I think. Rumour has it that they’re getting together to learn to practice Dark Magic.” He shuffled closer to the girl and his voice went down to a low whisper, “I got accosted by their leader in the Library and she’s got a really serious bee in her bonnet when it comes to Muggles.”

As the Professor entered the classroom James his mouth behind a book, a vein attempt to seem subtle.

“They’re bad news Delilah. I’m just wanting to make sure people are aware of the stuff that’s going on in this school. Sometimes I wonder if history is repeating itself a bit... you know what I mean.”

As Professor Price began to speak James dropped his book, not wanting to draw unwanted attention in the first day of class.

He pulled out all the necessary gear from his Jurassic Park backpack, which he still insisted upon using despite the fact that most other students just carried their books. He still felt the need to hold onto that small piece of home.

He also pulled out his wand, fiddling with the fine leather that covered what served as its grip. He’d barely been able to look at the tool since he’d learnt of the awful things it could do. He placed it on the table gently, unsure if a sudden movement might set it off like a broken gun.

Delilah listened intently to the Ravenclaw, hanging onto his every word. Her eyes widened and her eyebrows raised as he spoke.

"Surely they can't be that bad, can they really know that much about Dark Magic?" the blonde asked, but she'd always been a bit naive. Of course they could, but Delilah couldn't believe it until she saw it. She was quickly taken from her thoughts as the Professor walked in.

The blonde looked ahead, but let her eyes glance sideways to James every now and then in case he had something else to say. She smiled as she saw his backpack. "I love those films," she whispered, grinning slightly. Chris Pratt was one of her favourite actors so, of course, she loved the newer movies with him in them.

Delilah opened up her own books and put her quill on the page. She also pulled out her wand, even though some classes didn't require the use of them. It was always best to be prepared. The blonde gave the boy beside her a reassuring smile, glad he was just as nervous as she was. The thoughts of these witches and wizards still danced in her head as the Professor started to take the attendance for the days class.
