Fly Away

Date: 28th January, 2025
Both girls entered the Quidditch pitch armed with their own brooms. It was the first time Meyra would use her new silver arrow outside of her Quidditch practice. She never thought she would be able to convince her parents to buy her such an expensive broom so early. They had promised her that they would offer her a good broom once she proved to them that she was a good and responsible student. "You have to make it happen, if you want to deserve it." Harumi had always told her, and that was an unbreakable rule in the Lancaster family.
But she entered the Grynffindor team, and was now their new chaser, and with that, her parents gifted her with her new pride and joy. But Meyra, truth be told, was not feeling particularly joyful at the moment. She had been noticing Rai's absences more and more, she noticed - and lost count - the countless times she saw her cousin leaving the Hospital Wing in the last few weeks. That, and the dark circles under her brown eyes, were telling her that something wasn't right with her, so she decided she wouldn't rest until she found out what was going on with Raizel Voltrouz.
"You seriously have to tell me Rai!" Meyra told her friend, while they walked side by side heading to the middle of the field, "I'm worried about you. I see you in and out of the Hospital Wing more often than I do!" She kept arguing, "And we both know why I should be the one holding that record!" she finished in a demanding whisper, not wanting foreign ears to hear that last part. She was not interested in spreading unwanted rumours around.
"Listen." She told her while she got to a stop and staring at her cousin, her expression calm, but her eyes were searching to find any clue that could give her a hint about the reasons why Raizel seemed to not care about getting constantly hurt, "I know, alright?" She sighed, "I know that...that things sometimes are difficult to share. You know that I know right?" She asked giving her a pointed look, "But I'm here for you Rai...as you are here for me!" She finished with her eyebrows slightly frowned with concern, "Please tell me...what is happening with you?"

❂《 ⌜ January 28, 2025 ▎ Sometime ⌟▛▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔Nice day for flying, ain't it?
Well… not quite. It would've been but something came up, something that Raizel wasn't expecting to be brought up.
After all these years, it never happened… okay, perhaps there were other times that it was briefly brought up or noticed but none of those went like this. She was expecting a nice day for practice with her step-cousin and friend, Meyra Lancaster and she had heard she just got a Silver Arrow as a present from her parents. Who wouldn't want to take that for a ride before an actual match since the younger Gryffindor did manage to get into the Quidditch team. All was well, they were gonna have fun flying on brooms, doing laps around the Quidditch Training Pitch. Nothing was gonna stop them until Meyra somehow noticed Raizel's questionable habits and routines. Her disappearances during certain times, her hospital wing visits and the sleepless and restless nights taking a toll on her body.
Questions were asked, answers were demanded but not just out of nosiness but out of worry, the same reason why she doesn't want anyone to find out what she had been up to. Cold sweat ran down from her forehead when the younger Gryffindor started the conversation, wanting to know what was going on with her. Truth be told, she doesn't know herself what had gotten into her, on why she had gotten obsessed with getting better to the point that she started not caring about limitations. Those hospital visits were results of her reckless actions of flying, moving at speeds that she couldn't handle that well and ended up getting in small crashes. Some were just her trying out spells and whipping herself back into shape when it comes to spellcasting by slowly going back to her duelling streak even though it's clear as day that she could never be good at it. Those sleepless nights were just not because of the Hogsmeade incident and the nightmares she still sometimes gets but rather her restless mind trying to think of new ways of improving her own abilities and skills, something that she deeply seeks and craves for till this day.
Useless, pathetic, weak, she was sick of feeling those, much more so when she knew she would have changed something if she was only more skillful like that race of hers last October. That was months ago but it still haunts her till this day, that single spell that failed her and her teammates and cost them their victory. She wants change and fast to avoid that from happening again, to be ready when crisis strikes, to finally say that she could do things right, that her grandmother was wrong about her and that she's capable of achieving more just like the rest of her family despite being a Half-Blood.
But will she tell Meyra all of that? Open up to her. She's here right before her, already suspecting that something is wrong. “H-Huh? There's nothing wrong with me, what are you talking about?” The older one said with an averted gaze, a sheepish smile on her face and a slight shaky tone in that voice of hers. She couldn't involve others with her own problems which is kind of hypocritical for someone who insists on helping others, especially towards Meyra. She can't drag them along with her down the hole. “Look, I’m fine! See?” As always, she tried her best to look alright, to look like she has nothing bothering her, to not show any more signs of weakness. Whether Meyra sees through all that is a mystery but she is hoping that it would convince her to drop the subject.
In a way, it felt wrong lying, not when Meyra started trusting her, when she told her her deepest secret. It was only natural for Raizel to tell her what was going on in that troubled mind of hers, to tell her how her inferiority had been messing up with her so bad. But that's her own problem that she couldn't tell others and bother them with it. It's something that she needs to face alone. “So there's nothing to worry about, I’m alright.” That's right, they don't need to think about her. She can handle it. “You don't want to ruin this day by worrying too much for nothing, Mey.” She added in the end with a nervous chuckle.

Fly Away

Dennis woke up from his post class nap. It was an afternoon he had set aside for flying practice. It was brisk with plenty of snow. Whenever there was snow on the ground, he always felt it was safer to practice, it made nice padding for any mistake he might make. He dressed warm and bundled up, unfortunately the only thing cleaned was his winter school clothes. Being the typical boy, most of his wardrobe was strewn about and in various forms of crust, smell, dirt, and/or wet for some inexplicable reason. So he had little recourse but to go out looking like an advertisement for Ravenclaw pride, Raven claw themed: button down, sweater, winter cloak, mittens, scarf, winter beanie. The only thing not Ravenclaw was his two layers of warm socks and winter boots. Now all bundled up nice and warm, Dennis made his way over to the practice pitch.
After November, Dennis had progressed quickly in his flying ability. Perhaps not enough to race or play any sport, confidently, at least, but he had been practicing every chance he got since his fated meeting with a Gryffindor named Raizel. He had seen her a few other times practicing but never had an opportunity to approach her. He found out later that she was a broom racer from one of the other Gryffindors at one of his many practices. Such a cool girl, he thought as he walked out to the practice pitch, this time confidently holding a school broom in much better shape. When he grew up, he wanted to be just like her.
Dennis mounted the broom and kicked off, starting slowly. He found warming up slowly with a lap around the pitch was good for getting focused. Slower and lower to the ground than others, but gradually getting higher and faster with each progressive lap. He did this until he was brave enough to get above the practice rings. With a successful warm up, Dennis started to zig and zag down the pitch until he got to the rings on one side and weaved between the poles. Today he seemed to be doing well, because he felt he was faster than the day before.
On his way to the other side of the pitch, feeling good about his progress he saw a familiar face. It was another Gryffindor. She was in an animated discussion with someone he couldn’t quite make out in the moment. Her name, if he remembered correctly, was Meyra. He had seen her twice before. Once at the Potions championship and another time during a rousing session of Escape Room in the Room of Requirement. She had some brilliant solves and it was definitely some of the most fun he had had all year thus far. He should definitely go say hi, but like, in a cool way! Everyone loves a good death defying dive! Yeah, that was gonna rock!
Dennis circled around and descended rapidly. The icy cold air nearly blinded the young red head as he squinted, heart in his throat, adrenaline pumping in his veins as he continued to pick up speed. He could do this, he could this! He could make out the pair and he called out, “Meeeeeeyyyyyyyrrrrraaaaaa!”
He approached the ground several safe yards away from them, but in front of them and off to the side. He wasn’t that much of a mad man that he would risk failure and harming them! He pulled up as hard as he could, kicking his feet in front of him, leaning back, and it looked like he was going to make it! He felt the broom easy up and slow down, effectively stopping his descent. He was clear! Except he had pulled up too late and he was too close to the ground, closer than he hoped. Dennis, the flying boy wonder, hit a snowbank that had been built up substantially clearing the path the girls were walking on. He hit it hard enough that his broom was lodged firmly in the snow handle first, sending him tumbling down the bank and onto the path.
Dennis gruntled and moaned as he rolled, not seriously hurt but it did smart. When he opened his eyes, he was spread eagle on his back staring up at Meyra and the other girl that he instantly recognized as none other than Raizel. He sucked in air and coughed as the cold hurt his lungs. “Hey, Raizel,” he wheezed. “Fancy seeing you here. How did I do?”

Fly Away

Date: 28th January, 2025
Meyra noticed how her questions seemed to make her friend uncomfortable and for a brief moment she thought about giving up on trying to get an honest answer out of Raizel. She didn't want to overstep the mark and demand answers to questions that could be considered a violation of privacy. But that thought, which made her hesitate, crossed her mind and was gone as quickly as the winter breeze that caressed her face and flew away. Even though she was sure she was overstepping her bounds, she knew from experience that Raizel herself would still try to help her no matter what if the situation were reversed.
So when Raizel tried that pathetic attempt at pretending that everything was fine and insinuating that she was possibly just imagining things, Mey looked at her friend with her eyebrows raised in an obvious expression that said she wasn't "buying it", not even for a moment. In fact, the way Rai was trying to pretend that nothing was out of the ordinary made her feel even more assured that her instincts were right and that something serious was really going on with her friend. The fact that Raizel still kept things to herself and didn't trust her enough admittedly hurt a little, to tell the harsh truth. Raizel knew her biggest secret, she was there for her when she needed her, and now Meyra wanted to return the favor, she wanted to show that she was also capable of being a good friend and that she was also capable of carrying the trust of others, especially for someone she saw as family.
"Worrying too much over nothing? Seriously, Rai?" Meyra asked, crossing her arms over her chest and still holding the broom in one hand, "Do you think it's normal to spend your free time in the Hospital Wing?" She continued, "And don't tell me it's because you're an intern, because I know you're not!" Meyra told her pointedly, “Unless…” A slow smile began to appear on her pink lips, as her expression opened up as if she had found sweet enlightenment , “huuuuh… what’s his name?” She wondered in a whisper, adopting a concentrated look as she searched her memory, "Jack...? Jaff...? ZACH! That's it!" She finally said, snapping her fingers in front of Raizel's face and pointing her finger at her cousin, "It's Zach, isn't it? Did you do it on purpose so you could go there and see him?" She asked with a bright, almost goofy smile, and her amber-green eyes sparkled with mischief. It was an idea that hadn't crossed her mind before, but now that it had... it actually made sense!
But while that explained the reasons why Raizel kept making excuses to go to the Hospital Wing, it didn't explain why she always looked so tired. Why would that stop her from sleeping properly? Maybe Zach didn't feel the same way? Naaah...that doesn't seem like Raizel at all, losing sleep over a boy!
"You know you can..." She was about to continue, but the sound of her own voice was suddenly replaced by the sound of her own name being called from a place far above the ground. Meyra quickly turned to face the source of that voice and saw, with wide eyes, who was quickly approaching. Dennis Tumberton, the redhead she had spontaneously met on several occasions, was now taking a menacing dive while flying on his broom. "Maybe you want to..." Meyra started to tell him, but her words were cut off once more as she saw the boy fall to the ground with anything but gentleness and grace. She thought he was lucky that the snow kept his fall from being as bad as it would have been without it to break his fall, "slow down." Meyra muttered with a grimace.
Meyra walked the few footsteps that separated her from the boy now sprawled on the frozen ground. "Are you okay?'" she asked, looking down at him. A huff escaped her lips, followed by soft chuckles as she heard him ask Raizel about his flying performance. "Brilliant!" Mey replied to him, showing him her thumb.

❂《 ⌜ January 28, 2025 ▎ Sometime ⌟▛▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔Raizel is a bad liar, this is the proof of that. Her gestures, the poor way she tries to dodge the question being thrown at her and even her voice was a big give away that she was hiding something and hiding it poorly. It was no surprise that Meyra still suspects her despite her assurance that there was nothing going on with her. The way her cousin looked at her with those eyes of hers that tells her she was not buying anything she had said made her step back, a nervous grin present on her face and couldn't maintain eye contact with her. For someone who faced challenges head without any fear in those fiery brown eyes of hers, it's a surprise that she fears this young girl before her right now.
Meyra is persistent, she will give her that. She looked like she wanted to give up on her questioning but she didn't. In fact, it made her even more determined to get an answer out of her which just unnerved the older Gryffindor further. In a way, with how she was doing things, crossing that boundary just to get the truth from her was reminding her of how she does the same thing when it comes to people that she cares about. Raizel's grip on her broom tightened, still can't fix her gaze on Meyra for she can't bear to see that determined face of her, knowing she'll give in to it. The secret that she has, it was not as big as Meyra's secret, heck, she doesn't even know why she would want to know something trivial. But as trivial as it may be, it was a secret that Raizel isn't ready to spill… not yet at least.
“Okay… I know it's not normal but believe me, it's nothing.” Raizel still insisted despite being on the losing side of this argument. And there goes her excuse of saying she was an intern. Maybe she can say that she wanted to observe how they heal people because she was planning on becoming an intern? Nah, that's just making her situation worse. Think, Raizel, think. There has to be a way to escape this situation. Unfortunately, there isn't. She will need a distraction, a miracle if she wants to escape Meyra's wrath. For the meantime, she could do her best to argue. What came next however, caught her off guard.
It's Zach, isn't it?
Huh?
Did you do it on purpose so you could go there and see him?
HAAAAAAAH?! Hold up, let's back up for a bit there…
Look, the boy that was mentioned is one of her closest friends and to tell the truth, aside from her other cousin, Alyssea Brown, he is one of the healing interns that she could trust to at least help her if she got hurt and he might've been one of the few who got a glimpse of what she had been going through all thanks to her getting sick and him being the one who had taken care of her during that time. Going there to see him though? Like only for that reason? NO! She’d rather not bother him really and judging by the look on Meyra's face, she had it all wrong. “THAT'S NOT IT!” This is one of those rare days that this usually quiet Gryffindor raised her voice, a small tint of red present on her cheeks as she felt blood rushed to her head. “I was just there to get myself treated after crashing-” Due to her flustered state, Raizel almost blurted that out but luckily, she stopped herself, quickly covering her mouth as to not say anything else. Luckily, someone called out to Meyra. Wait.. who would be calling out to her?
To find where the voice was coming from, Raizel looked around and then up to the air. There, she saw someone, fast approaching… like really fast. “Oi oi oi, are you serious right now?” Raizel uttered with a grin on her face, her hand, out of instinct, reached out for her wand in an attempt to cast a spell to slow down whoever was approaching them but it turns out, it wasn't needed or rather, it was already too late to act. He looked like he got it at first… until misfortune struck. Broom handled lodged on a pile of snow and that sudden stop threw whoever was riding that broom to the ground, rolling, tumbling and then stopping just before her and Meyra. Who is this guy again? Wait, this is the same guy from last November, that 2nd year practicing. Venice? Eunice? Ah, Dennis, right. “Uh, better if you actually pulled up and didn't crash!” Raizel told him before letting out a heavy sigh. This is the miracle that she was hoping for and it looks like Meyra knows him too. Good good. This will give her time to silently slip away while she is distracted.

Dennis had a feeling he inadvertently interrupted something. He looked from Meyra to Raizel and back again as they approached them. One seemed somewhat sad but in a snarky way, and the other seemed happy but in a distraught way. Wait. He was looking at them upside down. Meyra was looking smug and Raizel flustered. What had happened? Dennis’ curiosity would not be sated, however, as Meyra approached first with some very flattering praise and a thumbs up. He grinned his typical Dennis boyishly charming grin, still laying prone on the ground. At least he did something right. He must be the most amazing broom rider that ever…broomed? “Awesome! I will do much better next time, just you wait!”
Next Raizel somewhat cautiously came over, trying to figure something out? She surely would never have forgotten his name! Obviously she knew who he was. She gave him some constructive criticism about pull out…or was it pulling up? Either way, she didn’t seem as impressed as Meyra and he had to admit that that hurt a bit. “Noted! I will pull out next time! Earlier is safer!” He said, offering her a thumbs up, oblivious to the fact he was still in fact on his back.
Even from his vantage point, Raizel seemed distracted or distant? Troubled? Perhaps just constipated. Dennis always had that look when he really had to use the bathroom. Poor Raizel. Suddenly he remembered that he was laying down, the cold ground now chilling his back. Time to get up! “Meyra, you wouldn’t mind maybe giving me a hand would you?” He asked as he extended his hand for her to take. He would definitely help them find the nearest bathroom.

“THAT'S NOT IT!” Raizel responded to her in a state that could be seen as guilty panic, especially when complemented by the sudden rosy color that warmed her cheeks. Meyra's smirk just widened into a cheeky smile that reached her green eyes with a mischievous glint. "Right, of course its not it..." She thought, not believing a single word her cousin was saying, it all sounded like she was doing her best, and failing, to obfuscate the obvious and right conclusion. "Of course, of course!" Meyra said waving with her hand in a fake dismiss, "After crashing makes sense! My apologies." "After crashing for him!" She added in her thoughts while she sweetly smiled at Raizel.
But she was prevented to continue her investigation, by the landing disaster called Dennis Tumberton. Meyra didn't know whether she should feel more worried or irritated by his sudden and clumsy interruption. In the end her concern for the boy won and she walked towards him to make sure he was okay.
"I hope so! If you keep falling like this you may take Rai's record at the Hospital Wing!" Mey said humorously, looking from him to Raizel, raising her eyebrows at her cousin smugly, in an expression that could be read as 'you-know-what-I-mean'. “Meyra, you wouldn’t mind maybe giving me a hand would you?” Dennis called from the ground and Mey turned again her attention towards the Ravenclaw boy. "Yes, of course!" She said gently, reaching out to him and holding the hand he had already extended to her. Pressing her feet into the snow-covered ground, and after making sure she wouldn't slip, Meyra pulled him up, helping him stand, "Good thing that the snow softened your impact as you fell, or you could have been really hurt!"

There is that itch to just wipe that smirk on Meyra's face right now, signified by the way her fingers were twitching out of frustration and maybe a bit of embarrassment. She got it all wrong, she wanted to protest and saying this in front of someone else will definitely give them a wrong idea of her relationship with a certain Ravenclaw boy and she hates that. It was more because of the reason that she doesn't want Zach getting involved in such a rumor because of her. If it was a rumor of her doing shady stuff like dark magic or being in some sort of cult, then sure, that’s fine. It's her anyway and no one else is involved but when it involves other people? No. With the way that Meyra is talking to her and the way she is looking so smugly with that sweet and sickening tone in her voice, she knows that even if she argues with her now, she's not gonna listen. Maybe a good screaming on her pillow should do the trick.
As much as she wanted for the conversation to move on from her constant absence and frequent Hospital Wing visits, this isn't the way she wanted it to go. When her cousin made that remark about the Hospital Wing, she couldn't help but facepalm and scream internally. The worst part is that, while she's annoyed and angry, she needs to keep her temper in check because she doesn't want them to hate her for snapping and who would even want to harm a friend? This was the same feeling she has whenever Zach messes with her though. Raizel grumbled as the younger Gryffindor went to help Dennis out and while they were distracted, she used this time to silently back up and then hopped onto her broom to just leave them before Meyra asked any more questions about this or spread more of this rumor.
For anyone who truly knows her, they would know she has no time for trivial things such as dating and she certainly doesn't see Zach that way. He’s just a good friend to her, one of her best friends that had stuck around since they met. She had others but they were gone and truth be told, she has no hope of them coming back to Hogwarts. So those who stayed, she cherishes them, keeping them close. They make her feel safe at least. This was probably karma for when they thought Ulysses and Alyssea were dating but theirs were a different situation for they did come to the ball together as escorts of each other. She sighed as she zoomed off, leaning forward to get some speed and to get away faster before anyone could even notice her going. Hey, maybe then she can finally get some practice instead of chatting.

As soon as Meyra let go of Dennis's hand, she noticed Raizel's movements out of the corner of her eye. The Gryffindor first year still reached out her hand towards her cousin to try to stop her, but her reaction time was not enough. One moment Raizel was beside them, the next second she was on her broom flying through the air of the Quidditch pitch. "Raiii!!" Meyra called. But it was in vain as the brown haired girl was anything but interested in waiting for her or Dennis, "Wait for us!!"
Holding her broom, and climbing on top of it, Meyra tapped Dennis on the shoulder with her hand, "See if you can keep up with us!" She said to him, "Don't fall this time!" She told him with a smirk and a wink. With that, Meyra propelled herself and her broom towards the azure winter sky, not waiting for the Ravenclaw boy to make his decision. "Raiii!! Come back here, this is cheating!!" She screamed for her cousin to hear through the freezing wind that blew across her face, now even more fiercely due to the speed of her flight.
"If you don't stop, I'll tell You-Know-Who the real reason for your visits!!" She threatened mischievously, "Come to think of it, I might even write him a letter!" Meyra laughed. She laughed like she hadn't laughed in a long time.
It was a strangely pleasant feeling, it felt like her heart, which had previously been asleep, had woken up at that moment, as Meyra flew quickly to chase after Raizel. Meyra felt like a child at that moment, a happy and carefree child, as if nothing in the world was wrong. As if nothing else mattered but that moment, as if nothing else existed but the joy that had taken over her heart.

Dennis blinked. Raizel spent a lot of time in the hospital wing? Was it the bathroom problems? Or was she just an abnormally sick girl? Poor Raizel. His He realized he knew next to nothing about his friend. If he had known what was really happening, perhaps he might suggest to Meyra she turn it down from 10 to 7. But to the boy crash wonder, it just seemed like a bunch of talk about Raizel’s IBS. Still, Dennis was grateful for the hand Meyra gave him off the frozen ground.
Instantly his back felt warmer not having to lay on the cold solid ground for any longer. Raizel, however caught his eyes, as he said “Thank you!” to Meyra. What was she going to do? Dennis’brow farrowed as he tried to figure Raizel out. Meyra next said something about snow and Dennis nodded absently as he watched Raizel fly away. He gave a half hearted, “yeah I am lucky like that I guess.”
He started to point but it seemed like Meyra also caught wind of what Raizel was up to and, beckoning for Dennis to follow, Meyra sped off after her yelling. Whether over her bathroom issues or a boy, maybe Meyra needed to cool off a bit Dennis thought. Maybe he could understand the situation better if he followed.
“C-coming! W-wait for me!” Dennis called after as he climbed the snow bank and retrieved his broom. Not caring about the steep slop, Dennis hopped on the broom while also hopping incidentally off the snow bank. This caused his broom to slump a bit with the unexpected drop in altitude. Dennis grunted, righted himself, and zoomed off after them recklessly trying to catch up to Meyra on his school broom as fast as it could carry him.
He closed the gap just enough, fighting against the cold, never daring to have flown this fast. He made it just in time to hear Meyra continue on about a “him.” Wait. This wasn’t about the bathroom? And about some boy? He did find this whole thing a bit silly, ironic given his entrance into it, but he wasn’t really sure Raizel was seeing any humor in it.
Dennis pushed his broom harder in an effort to catch up, but her broom was too well rounded compared to his and he was still lagging behind them.
He called after Meyra, the only one he could hope to communicate with, “This whole chase is about a boy!? Really? Isn’t that a private thing!?” Not sure she could hear him. But if it were him, and he ‘liked’ a girl he would die before he’d let any of his friends know it, they would never let him live it down after all his talk of cooties. Exactly. He was getting it!but he hadn’t yet made the proper connections that Raizel in his example was him and Meyra was his friends not letting him live it down. He might get there eventually.
And they were off on a broom race! Meyra chasing Raizel and Dennis struggling to keep up! Dennis didn’t even have time to appreciate the fact he was flying further and farther than he ever did before!
