The past few months have been extremely difficult for Rusty. His grandfather had become sicker then ever, leaving him to take care of his sister. Rusty cooked her dinner, helped her with homework, and always reminded her to take her vitamins. But he knew that soon he would be going to Hogwarts, leaving his nine year old sister all alone. He could not let this happen. At first he considered staying home. Not going to Hogwarts, but just stay with his sister forever. But he knew this was not what his parents would have wanted. They would want him to go live his own life. Go to Hogwarts, make new friends, get good grades, eat amazing food, etc. Eventually he decided that he had to go to school. Rusty knew his grandfather was still to sick to fully take care of Mary Anne, so he asked one of the doctors that was always at the house to look after her. Rusty knew this was a HUGE ask, but the doctor was a very kind women who instantly said yes. Rusty was secretly glad it was a women. Ever since the disappearance of Mary Anne and Rusty's parents, Mary Anne has only had a brother and a grandfather. As a growing girl, Rusty believed that she deserved to have a female role model. Hopefully the doctor named Shirley will do a good job with this. But he would still write her. Alot. Just to check in on Mary Anne.

Secretly, Rusty was finally happy to stop taking care of his little sister. At Hogwarts, he could be free. He could be a child again.

Rusty was so excited for Hogwarts. The food, the education, the sports, the snow, everything. Well, everything except one thing. Muggles. All Rusty's life, he was raised to hate muggles. They were trash under his feet. Muggle borns will never truly be a wizard and Rusty had known that forever. For decades, the wizarding world has been accepting muggle borns more and more into society. For some reason, only a few purebloods are staying loyal. That includes the Singers. Rusty was hoping when he got to Hogwarts, he would be able to find a good true pure blood friend. But he knew this would take time. He wasn't exactly a "people" person.

Boarding the Hogwarts Express took sometime. He waited in a line of dozens of kids who were taking forever to say goodbye to their families. Thankfully, Rusty already was able to say his teary eye goodbyes in private, in his own home. The Dr Shirley was still taking care of sick Papa, so she couldn't take Mary Anne to the station. Rusty was able to take a portkey set up a few weeks ago to the platform by himself.

Finally, all the children in front of him had boarded the train, so it was now his turn. He stepped onto the train looked around. There were students everywhere, some already in their black Hogwarts robes like Rusty, and some in their normal day clothes. As he headed toward the back of the train he caught glimpes of each group of students in their compartments. Some were already sitting with friends, and some were sitting alone. Rusty walked by one girl who was silently crying to himself.

Grow up crybaby.

Rusty was not too empathetic towards cryers. Crying is a big sign of weakness. Eventually, Rusty found a compartment for himself. He walked in and dropped his trunk on the floor, looked out the window awaiting the journey ahead.

Finally, the train started moving. It was a few minutes late to start since a few kids were still hopping on and getting seated, but that's alright. As long as it wasn't too delayed.

Rusty pressed his face against the window and turned sideways to try and see Kings Cross station getting farther and farther away until he could no longer see it. It was happening. He was finally on his way to Hogwarts. He had been dreaming of this day his entire life, ever since he could remember the first time his parents mentioned Hogwarts. It was a little full circle moment. Rusty's very own mother and father must have sat on this train for the first time when they were children and rode off to Hogwarts on September 1st. Now their it was their son's turn. And he was determined to make them proud. While it was definitely a full circle moment, it was very bittersweet. Rusty had always expected his parents to see him off at platform 9 3/4. He always expected them to help him pack. He always new they would show him how to get through the barrier to the platform. But it wasn't like that at all. Rusty was alone at platform 9 3/4. He packed for school himself. He had to find out how to get onto the platform all himself. But still. He was going to Hogwarts. Even though things went a little different then expected, with his family disappearing and all, it was going to be okay.

The train kept on chugging down the tracks to Hogwarts for a few hours. Rusty tried to take a nap but he couldn't get comfortable, and the other students were far to loud, so instead he grabbed some parchment and a quill from his satchel and wrote a letter to his sister.

Before Rusty left for school, he told his sister everything she needed to know about how to take care of herself and Papa, and how to trust Dr. Shirley. But he didn't say everything he would have liked. He didn't want it to get to emotional, so he quietly decided to himself that he would write her a letter saying everything he truly wanted to say later.

Soon enough, Rusty finished his letter. He sealed it shut, and silently reminded himself to take it to the famous Hogwarts owlery once he got to school. By this point, he had been sitting cooped up in his compartment for hours, and decided it would be nice to stretch his legs. He opened his compartment door and headed towards the bathroom on the other side of the train. Unfortunately, he wasn't the only one who needed to stretch, and there was a little bit of a line for the bathroom. Rusty found a place in line right next to a compartment full of two girls. While he was waiting for the bathroom, he could hear little bits of their conversation. They were both muggles.

One of the girls started the conversation saying she had never even heard of Hogwarts before she got her letter. How ridiculous! Some wizards have been waiting and training their whole lives to go to Hogwarts, and here was some muggle girl who had never even heard of it?!! Rusty's blood began to boil. He strained his neck to try and hear how the other girl would respond.

"I didn't even know the magic world existed! It was quite a shock back at home!"

This threw Rusty over the edge. Hogwarts was supposed to be a sacred place for WIZARDS, and WIZARDS ONLY. Rusty always knew that muggles would be at Hogwarts but he didn't actually realize that the muggles hadn't even known of the wizarding world. It wasn't fair. Rusty had studied and worked hard his whole life to be accepted into Hogwarts and here were some random girls who probably have never heard of the place less then a month ago! Rusty was enraged and decided to let these girls know. He got out of the bathroom line and opened the compartment with the girls inside.

Well all of us REAL wizards have known about Hogwarts and magic for years. We all will already be so ahead of you guys! So good luck. You'll need it.

Rusty left the compartment and slammed the door shut. He didn't even feel the slightest bit of guilt. He was just being honest after all! These girls were going to be so behind in their classes and social lives. They don't even know the first thing about magic! Real wizards have been exposed to magic their whole lives giving them a huge advantage in school. So if you think about it, Rusty was being nice! He gave the girls a real warning about what they are getting into. Magic is no joke, though they are sure to make a joke of it!

Rusty didn't feel like using the bathroom anymore, and feel that he was stretched enough so he headed back to his compartment. Rusty took a breath once he sat down. He looked out the window and smiled as the terrain past. He put his head against the window and eventually fell asleep.

The screeching of the train's wheels on the tracks woke Rusty. He opened his eyes and for a moment almost forgot where he was. He looked at his feet resting on his trunk and instantly remembered. He was on the Hogwarts Express, making his way to the school for the very first time.

All the other students were already getting up, gathering their robes, trunks, pets and other assorted items. Rusty grabbed his trunk and put his black Hogwarts robe on. He rolled his trunk out into the aisle and started walking towards the front of the train to get off. By the time the students in front of him cleared out of his way, he was able to step of the train and get a good look at the castle for the first time.

Rusty's jaw almost literally dropped as he stared off at the huge castle that laid before him. He had heard and seen pictures of the Hogwarts castle before but seeing it in person was more magical then he could have ever imagined. The castle was large and surrounded by a huge lake. It had many torrents and every window was lit with light coming from inside. All Rusty wanted to do in that moment was sit on the ground and stare at it's beauty but then he realized that the other first years were already being wrangled to the lake for the boat ride to the castle, Rusty's father had told him about. He smiled and followed his fellow first years, trunk in hand, to the boats. But the fun had only just begun.
