《 ⌜ September 19, 2024Thursday | After Class
Classes done, it was time to do her usual routine. What was once a trip to the duelling club to practice some spells had been replaced by flying instead. She needed a break and a break she got. However, she found herself signing up for Broom Racing and by some miracle, she had been accepted into the main roster of her house’s team. Whether her performance would be the same as the one back in duelling remains unknown for her first official race is still weeks ahead. Gives her more time to prepare.

Her duelling skills, if she has any, can still prove to be useful in the said sports for unlike Quidditch, spells are allowed. Good thing that she hasn’t stopped practicing her spellcasting, even managing to get her hands on a couple of advance spells as usual. Her flying skills are improving. She did well back at Summer Camp during the broom sledding and she had been training constantly as well, much like what she is about to do now.

As soon as classes were over, she grabbed her trusty Firebolt and started making her way to the training pitch. It was cold but that won’t stop her from doing her training. Through sheer will, she could fight even the cold weather, or at least, that’s what she’s expecting. She had dressed warmly anyway so she could keep at it until it was dinner time. “Alright…” Raizel uttered as soon as she was on the Training Pitch, her eyes looking at the broom she had in hand before mounting it. She gave the ground a nice kick to get herself up in the air, keeping it steady before doing a couple of laps around. Fingers curled tightly around the broom’s handle as she zoomed through the air, increasing speed slowly to test how fast she could go without falling, how much she could go further beyond.

It has always been like that for her ever since those failures that she had, always going past her limits yet sometimes those come unrewarded. Still, she continues to seek ways of improving, even if it means taking a dangerous path. If that’s what it takes for her to find the improvement that she had been longing for, then so be it. She had always been reckless that way anyway. Taking risks had become a part of her. Maybe this time, she had gotten a lot more willing to take such risks considering how desperate she is right now. Desperate for improvements, desperate for wins.

Summer camp hadn't been life-changing for Cass. It had been a whole lot of fun, and they had got to participate in so many cool events and see lots of their favourite people, but it hadn't altered who they were as a person. Thankfully. It seemed they had survived their first ever Hogwarts school event. Though did it really count, as it wasn't a ball? Either way, they were here now and still alive to boot. "Here" happened to be some random pretty much empty corridor. What were they doing here? Good question. They were once again one wandering the castle, looking for trouble. It was weird and empty up here, and they hated it. They needed something to do, and fast or they would quite literally go insane. Running over to a window, they threw it open. There would be no dramatic jumping out it for them, since they hadn't brought their broom.

The wind was calling their name. Why had they thought the castle was the place to explore? It was a beautiful day. Lots of students were out enjoying the idyllic grounds, or using the clear skies as the perfect place to practice flying. Wait a minute, was that Raizel? The super amazing senior (at least senior to them) who had rescued them that one time they got stuck in a quidditch hoop tried out an awesome strategy that sadly went wrong. They had seen her and waved back at the downhill broom sledding at summer camp, but never got a chance to properly say hi. Which was a shame, because even her broom sledding was amazing. She was so cool!

Actually, now could be the perfect time. If they caught her before she went out flying, then they could tell her what an awesome job she did at... broom.... sledding. That thing. Like brooms, but sleds. Cass broke into a run, jumping down sets of stairs and at one point falling over. They just got right back up again though. Nothing could stop Cass on a mission! Their arm did hurt now, but that could wait till later. They slowed down once they got out of the doors and waved to Raizel. "Hi! Are you practising? How was the rest of your hoildays? Are you on the broom racing team and dominating the entire league yet?" they unleashed a relentless barrage of questions "I don't think I got the chance to say Hi after the broom sledding but you did awesome! Even if that organiser was totally cheating".

That lap was good although she felt something was still missing. Maybe not as fast as she thought she would be but that’s something she can work on hopefully unless it’ll just be the same as what happened back in duelling Being unable to see your progress is horrible and that’s the very reason why she’s on this path of recklessness, a path that’s filled with danger, trials and sufferings as what she had learned during their Divination.

“One more.” Raizel uttered, ready to do one more lap around the training pitch until she heard someone call out. She wasn’t sure at first if she was the one being called as there could be others here but as soon as she saw who it was and that they were looking at her, she knew they were trying to get her attention. Well, a short break wouldn’t hurt, she thought as she went down, hopping off of her broom and then greeting them with a smile. “Hey.” she started before being caught off guard by Cass’ barrage of questions. Oh boy, where does she even start?

That made her chuckle as she thought of the responses to their questions. “Uh, yeah, just doing some flying practice, checking how fast I could go.” she answered the first. Their second question, there was nothing too much to say about that one so she simply responded with: “It was okay.” Nothing special about the Holidays aside from spending time with her family and learning a couple more about them, especially her father’s side. “Ahahaha, I mean, I did get into the team but I don’t know about dominating the leagues just yet.” Her first official race is still a long way to go and she sure hopes she could assist her team when that time comes, be useful to them.

“Broom sledding?” The event from Summer Camp had long escaped her mind and to tell the truth, she had forgotten how she did during that time. Waa she that great enough to be getting such compliments from Cass though? She was sure she was just doing the same thing as the others that were with them, maybe she did take the high risk paths but it wasn’t just her. “Oh, that one, I did my best. Thanks, I think you did well too.” Right, the organizer was doing his own thing during that time, creating these ‘perils’ but she actually enjoyed that challenge. “Well, it was a tiring event so I would understand if others would want to just go back to their tents after. So, are you here to practice as well?”

Cass had not managed to catch Rai before she started practising, and were probably interrupting. Whoops. Too bad though, they hadn't seen her anywhere around school and there was no chance they were letting her escape now. There was probably a reason for that though. She was a third year so they didn't share any classes, from a different house so Cass could never catch her in the common room, and their circles of friends didn't really seem to overlap. It didn't matter that she was "only" a third year though. Cass was certain that she was the coolest person in the whole entire school. And she was super super good at flying! She better not end up racing against Slytherin though. Cass wasn't sure that they had the lung capacity to cheer for them both at once.

"Liar" they replied "I am super absolutely certain that you are the best flyer that I know". It was true that they didn't know a lot of people who were any good at broom sports, but their statement still stood. She was certainly better at it than them, although that wasn't exactly a high bar. Cass's tendency to believe that straight lines were too good for them and try to fly through trees (or quidditch hoops) instead made them a little bit... unreliable in the air. It wasn't their fault though. It was just everyone else who needed to learn how to have fun for once rather than sulking around complaining about whatever. Anyway, that was besides the point. "But you got into the team! That's great news. Has the racing season started yet?" they genuinely didn't know much about broom racing.

How hard could the rules be though? As far as they were aware, there wasn't much in the way of rules anyway. Just get your team across the finish line first, and then the game was won. They knew that spells were involved as well somehow, which only made the whole thing extra fun. The one that they had tried at summer camp was brilliant, even if they hadn't felt like they knew what they were doing once during the entire race. But that was just part of the fun! "And you did super extra awesome at the broom sledding thing as well, saying you didn't is not allowed" they said. Tiring was not a word that Cass knew. Sleep was for the weak, or those who weren't nearly as energetic as Cass.

But! Rai said that they had done good! That was one of the highest compliments that they could receive, and their grin in response was so wide it looked like it took up half of their face. "Thank you!" they said "And yes! I practised a lot in the holidays too, but then my father told me that if I broke another window I was going to get my broom confiscated". This was true news, and very sad news. It wasn't like the window was hard to fix, even they knew how to cast Reparo. Unfortunately, it was not helping with their quest to get their father to buy them a new broom. The comet 180 had been a compromise, since their father didn't want them to destroy a nicer broom. They could most certainly afford it, but as their father put it, "brooms were works of art" and "not to be treated like toys". Bah. They would convince him that they were responsible enough for one one day.

After all, they were a second year now! Once they made it onto a sports team, he would have to give in and buy them a new one. But all this broom talk wasn't very helpful, because they hadn't brought theirs down with them. They hadn't really expected to end up on the pitch after all. "Wait there!" they said, and took off sprinting to go fetch it. After about five minutes and one poor short kid getting knocked into as a casualty, they were back with a broom in hand. "I haven't broken it yet" they said proudly "So hopefully I can convince my dad to buy me a nice one later this year. Maybe a silver arrow or something" .

Cass’ response made her laugh. Being called a liar when she was just stating facts about her own skills was unexpected. For all she knows, her performance had always been low despite the efforts she had put in them and since she haven’t gotten the chance to measure her skills just yet in an official race, she doesn’t know how she will fare in that. If you look back to when she had unofficially though, she could already see how it’ll go and that is with her being sent to the hospital wing without finishing the race. Sad but that is a future that she can’t seem to escape.

Cass seems to see so much potential in her, has so much faith that Raizel is not sure she could even live up to it and it bothers her. But of course, she’s not the type of person who would let that pressure show, she’s the type who would bear it and grin. “No, it hasn’t. That's why I’m getting practice as much as I can.” Maybe getting to know her teammates would do her well too as since she is new, the only person that she knows was her duelling captain, Piérre Marchonné. She’s no people person either. Ever since her circle of friends started declining, she had been hesitant to create more connections. “Well, I think I just got extremely lucky back in that broom sledding thing.”

Raizel watched as Cass ran off to go and get something while also thinking about what they just told her earlier. Broke a window. She wasn’t surprised to hear that coming from the very person who got stuck in those hoops trying out a questionable strategy. When they came back with a broom in hand, she grinned. A Comet 180, she had one of those and probably the mark of her blooming love for brooms. Her dad bought her that, thinking that she might need it or something for fun. She can bet he was just trying to help her love broom sports as he is a Quidditch fan. But then she had to give it up. And then she ended up with a Firebolt. How? Well, it involves sneaking it out which she won’t get into details but it did seal her resolve to be a part of the broom racing team.

“A Silver Arrow huh.” It’s one of the popular brooms for most people as far as she could remember and while she does own a Firebolt, a part of her wanted one as well. “That’s a nice broom. Yeah, I will wish you luck in convincing your dad about that.” Maybe she should try that as well but that is so unlike her. The Firebolt will do. “Wanna do a lap with me?” she asked, wanting to get back into practicing and it is kind of nice to have someone to practice with.

Puffing up with pride at making Rai laugh (even if she was laughing about her own totally awesome broom racing skills, which was not allowed), Cass grinned. They weren't sure why she was so dedicated to denying her own greatness. Cass certainly wouldn't be if they had broom racing skills like those. Although they personally thought that their broom racing skills were getting quite good from all the unofficial racing they had been doing. If quidditch didn't work out for them, then there was always becoming a racer. "I don't think luck has anything to do with it" they responded "Why do you hate admitting how awesome you are so much anyway?".

At least broom choices were something they could agree on, because Rai being awesome was a hill that Cass was willing to die on and they planned to keep arguing over it for as long as it took. It was a good thing that they were being distracted by talk of silver arrows, because their definition of "long" extended to staying outside on the training pitch for several weeks. "Yes! It's my favourite because..." they trailed off while their brain attempted to com up with something. Most of their knowledge of brooms was just enthusiasm and personal experience testing the limits of how fast they could go on their lawn and how many garden ornaments they could knock over. "It's fast!" they decided. Speed was good, and more importantly fun.

"Anyway, I'm totally going to get it because I'm amazing at convincing people to do things and my father is awesome as well" they said. "We live in London but we have a garden big enough to fly in and also the woods which is super fun" their house was awesome in their opinion. Maybe they should host a for fun broom race sometime. Next time their father hosted a dinner party they should convince some of their friends to come over and race the next day. They were pretty sure they would get any broom they got given immediately confiscated if they tried to host the broom race at the same time as the dinner party. "Where do you live anyway?" they asked.

“Trust me, luck plays an important role more than what you think.” You can have all the skills you want but sometimes, you need a bit of that luck so secure a good performance. That broom sledding event. Yes, she will admit that she did great, one of the events where she actually did something right and it did make her feel proud of herself, thinking that she still has what it takes to achieve things despite her recent failures. But luck played its part considering that you don't know which path was the safest among them. She got lucky that the perils didn't hit her. “And I’m not really used to admitting things, especially when it comes to my skills. I don't want to seem so pretentious.” That and the fact that she couldn't believe it either because of her past failures. A lack of confidence in herself resulted in that when it didn't bother her before. People do change, for better or for worse and for her, it’s the latter.

Hearing someone else aiming for a broom that she too would want in the future was kind of nice though, looking like a good topic and of course, to shift the conversation to it as it is a better topic than the one that they have in the beginning. It did made her laugh how being fast was the only thing that Cass can say about the Silver Arrow. Then again, they aren’t wrong. It’s fast, maybe not as fast as other brooms, especially her dream broom, a Starsweeper but could still compete against them. Ah, she hopes she gets herself one soon as well. Then again, she still has the Firebolt. “They are fast, aren’t they? Riding them would be so thrilling.” Or so she hopes anyway.

“Well, we live in Souldern, a bit far from London.” Without a floo network anyway. “Oh? You have a nice garden to fly around in?” That sounds wicked. Must be nice to have a place to practice playing. Not like she can’t though, they have a huge space as well but she is a bit worried she might crash onto her mother’s plants and she doesn’t want to get scolded by her or be grounded by her.

Fidgety little hands clutching their broom, Cass listened intently to the words of Rai, the wisest third year to ever exist (in their opinion at least). "Weeelll. Maybe" they replied, wrinkling their nose in disagreement. "But also that's not true at all. 'Luck' is just a lie really. You could get really lucky by having everyone else not make it through an obstacle or something, but its still your skill that gets you through the walls or whatever it is". They then proceeded to mime throwing up (away from their broom of course). "Belugh. I sound like a teacher" they said. Teacher was code for boring in Cass's brain, and boring was code for bad things. They had yet to meet an exciting teacher, which clearly meant that one must not exist. "Anyway! That's fine! You just gotta be more loud about how awesome you are. Like me! Watch this" they replied. "I'M SUPER COOL AND AWESOME" they screamed to the entire pitch, of mostly pigeons who hadn't been interested before and were now interested in being somewhere else.

If Rai couldn't appreciate her own awesomeness, at least she could appreciate fast things. "Yeah! Although I can make my broom go pretty fast too. Wanna see round two of flying through the quidditch hoop? they grinned to show her they were (mostly) joking. Although. It was definitely a great idea to keep in mind. This time they wouldn't get stuck though. But getting stuck had led to them meeting Rai. Maybe getting stuck in a quidditch hoop was the key to making really cool awesome friends. They should test this sometime. Turning their attention back to Rai, their brain short circuited for a second. Where was Souldern again? "I don't think I've ever been to Souldern before actually. Hey, I don't think I've heard too much about the Voltrouzes either. Are you guys originally from england? I should tell my father to invite you guys next time we have a dinner party" they said.

Maybe Rai's family didn't have very much money, or had just moved to England. They had no knowledge of what being poor was like, since their family had always had lots of money. They liked to think they were very kind and polite and not too posh and rich about it though. But really, what great mystery had kept them from meeting Rai before at one of their fathers dinner parties? Unless she was well... impure of blood. But there was no way she could be. She was way too much of an awesome broom racer and spellcaster for that. They felt a little guilty for even thinking of that.

How she wished she had their confidence. To be able to scream loud and proud that they are great, amazing, cool. No matter how hard Raizel tries nowadays, to convince herself that she did well by referencing the achievements she got, even when it comes to her studies, it's like there was always something holding her back. A lump in her throat, a dark cloud looming over her and a voice saying:

It's not for a Half-Blood Voltrouz like you…

Just by remembering made her grip around her broom tighter, hand shaking but then she calmed down. No, she mustn't think about that unless she wanted Cass to know how she had something else in mind and wasn't paying that much attention to them. When she had snapped out of it, Cass was on the thought of doing their previous stunt, a situation where they found themselves stuck within one of the hoops for the Quaffle after thinking that it was an interesting idea. “I’d rather not have to Flipendo you out of that again.” Raizel answered with crossed arms. While it sounded like a joke, she doesn't know if it'll remain that way knowing what kind of crazy person Cass was. To call them crazy when she herself had a few screws loose thanks to her own recklessness seemed unfair though.

Raizel’s mind wandered upon the mention of her family's name. She didn't think about it that much, it was just a last name after all but they were Purebloods. Whether they had influence in some way due to their occupation, that she wasn't sure of for she had only heard things about them from her parents and they had mostly kept things vague. The Gryffindor closed her eyes, humming and rocking her head from left to right trying to recall more of what she had heard about them. Ever since her paternal grandparents visited them when her father became an Auror, she had been given information about that side of the family as she had the right to know her own lineage. For a family that were former purists, it would be fair for other Purebloods to have forgotten about them. Blood Traitors as what they would call them.

“The truth is, I don't know a lot about that side of the family.” She answered as she looked up, her memory failing to retrieve a lot of information from the memory bank. “Well, there's the fact that we are an Auror family…” As far as she knew, that was a tradition that they followed before her grandfather changed everything for the sake of freedom. Doesn't that actually make her grandfather cool? If only she could say the same for her grandmother. “And while we do live in Souldern, the main manor is in Bicester.” They weren't poor, that much she knows. Old Purebloods, that's what her father told her. Years of services as Aurors and even Hit-Wizards had done them good up to the present. Raizel laughed at the mention of being invited into a party. That was… impossible for a lot of reasons. One, it's not one of her things, two, her father had refused to appear in any of those despite being contacted by his father, three, she was just a Half-Blood. “As far as I know, yes, we are from England and parties huh, never really been to one of those famous Pureblood gatherings. Well, I don't think I would be welcome in places like those.” She admitted with a sad smile. She was a child of a Pureblood and a Muggleborn after all.

That's right. Her grandmother, who still followed the views of a purist couldn't accept her, how could they? And while she didn't know if Cass and their family was within the same circle as her, a part of her still doubts how welcoming they will be for a Half-Blood from a family that had discarded their superior views.

Cass would like it to be known that they were offended that she thought they would need to be rescued. They were much better at flying now then they were then! And slightly taller, which wouldn't help with fitting through the hoop. Still, they had improved and they were ready for round two. The hoop could bring it on, because this time they would surely achieve victory. Maybe they could even pull out their super cool trick at Quidditch tryouts! The captains would have to be impressed with that. "Hey! I'm not gonna need rescuing, because I'm gonna make it through this time" they said "That hoop better watch out". They punched the air a few times just to show how serious they were. "I will be back" they said, this time to the hoop, while doing the I'm watching you hand sign thingy. Whatever it was called. That hoop better watch out.

Truth be told, Cass's family was a bit of a... complicated situation. Or at least that was what their father had always said. Whatever though, they didn't want to think about it. No thinking was the best possible option, and one that Cass chose often. "Oh!" they said, perking up at the mention of aurors. That was a safe and easy topic. "That sounds cool. Do you want to be an auror then? I think I would make a great auror. Especially if they let me chase the bad guys on a broom" they once again launched an attack on the air, this time with a pretend wand. Cass didn't really know what they wanted to do with their life after graduating. Thankfully, that was so far away that they didn't have to worry about it all. They still had lots of things they wanted to accomplish at school anyway. Like perfecting that super amazing Quidditch technique. That hoop better keep one eye open.

Cass's first thought is that Rai's family must be super rich if they had a house they preferred to their main manor. Their family just had the one, and a smaller estate in France that belonged to their stepmother, although they had never personally visited it. What she said next however, made their brain do some mental acrobatics to catch up. Famous... Never been... Welcome? The mental gears churned, and for a minute they were sure Rai was talking about celebrities. It was just dinner. It was a social thing yeah, but most of the time they just found someone their age and convinced them that the woods behind the manor were much cooler than all these boring adults and that they should have a broom race. This was how they had made most of their friends. Their mouth formed a little confused line shape. "Weah... I'm sorry but does that mean... You did something wrong?" they said. Her family must have done something really bad to not be invited to any dinner parties ever. Hopefully they hadn't accidentally made friends with a mass murderer.
