The case 2
Ross entered the library for the first time since.... Well, ever. He had no need. Sure a good book was always nice, but why read something new when you can reread ripoff Sherlock Holmes for the 90th time? Besides, this was a magic school. Who would waste their time at a library? Besides, as fascinated as he was with the school he had not had high expectations whatsoever. He was really only going here for detective reasons, anyway. No need to study, no TIME to study. There was a mystery that needed solving!
All his low expectations were absolutely shattered as he walked through the door. Bookshelves towered above to a nearly limitless end, and he wasn't quite sure where the back of the library was. How was he supposed to find random, convenient information like in the movies now? The more he thought of it, the more he realized he did not exactly have a 'lead' at all. All he knew was that the girl was acting shady. If he was not in a public library, he would have sworn at himself for not pushing more.
He slowly walked into the overwhelming library, realizing how awkward it would look if he didn't. He cautiously walked towards a shelf and simply stared. He didn't quite know the topic, but he hoped it made him come off as less awkward

Elena was quite a fan of the present. Also of absolutely terrible puns but who would put "Punniest Student" on a resume?
The answer to who would waste their free time at the library was currently rummaging through books on the lowest shelf in the back corner of the most knowledgable place on campus. Elena would say the world but she was pretty sure any university like Oxford, or Cambridge, or Hull would have a better library. It was quite a nice library though, and very big, definitely larger than she was used to.
Elena finished finding the fan and stood, smiling her usual sad smile as she twirled it a few times. Fumiko was excellent at presents, this one was going straight to the dorm room, there was a space she could hand it from the wall, it would be just perfect for this.
The Slytherin for once didn't sing or hum as she made her way through the library, then she had to backpedal when her eyes lit on a boy who didn't quite seem to know what he was doing.
"You alright there." Elena asked gently, "I know most of the library like the back of my hand, if you'd like help finding anything."

Ross jumped, as he was startled by the sudden question. He had been so absorbed in attempting to figure out where to start in the so called magical thing called 'literature' that he had not even seen it all coming. He looked over to the girl, which he did not quite immediately connect to be talking to him.
"Who? Me?" He asked somewhat loudly. He remembered he was in a library and quickly quieted down "yes, yes! That would be wondrous!" he whisper-exclaimed as he quickly scurried over to her.
"You see, there is a mystery afoot, and I must solve it! There was this witch, and she was real shady, alright!" he explained.
He felt he needed to explain before he could truly ask the question. After all, he might sound crazy. Then again, who did not here? This was a school about learning magic, after all. Even so, he had to admit he really had not learned a thing of magic so far. This was likely because of how he could never properly focus on the lesson, but he preferred not to think of that.
"Do ya know much of magic books? Ones that do really weird thingamadoodles?" He asked, attempting to sound as much like as an investigator as he possibly could. He felt he sounded cool, but he likely just came off like a maniac.

Elena looked curious, "A shady witch? Well of course I'd be happy to help you out on this! I'm always up for an adventure. Don't know much about magic books, except for ones which let you talk to someone with a matching diary. But that's only because I've seen one not because I have any idea at all how it works."
The map of the library should have it marked somewhere, she pulled it out of her pocket, "Okay! Map time, we'd be wanting a book on enchantment I'd think!"
There were three things she knew that were adventure related: Indiana Jones (Not Watched), Blizzard's League of Explorers (Used To Be A Hearthstone Whiz), and The Librarian. The latter of these was religiously watched and rewatched in one of her housed neighbour's living room's. So you could almost see her recognising that this would absolutely be an artifact, that this would be the start of her adventuring career, and that this could possibly be the coolest thing that will ever happen to her.
"My name is Elena Jones, like Indiana Jones except I wasn't named after the dog. What's your name?" She grinned, "It's time for adventure! We should start with enchantments, then the archaeology and artifacts section."

"An enchantment book? Yes, yes! That should be just fine and dandy! I'm sure there is something of the sorts we need to bring justice! he happily enthused, glad he finally found someone who might know what they're talking about.
"I've never 'eard of a matching diary book before. You aughta tell me about it! You can't just leave it there. I'm curious. he responded, slightly jokingly but with a curious tone nagging its way into his occasionally squeaky voice.
"The name here is Ross Stephens," he informed with a tiny smirk "named after pretty much nobody." he quickly added.
After all, he was going to be the one to make his own fate. Ross was too stubborn to accept anything otherwise. It was important that he was in charge of what happened to his life. If he did not, he would probably end up like a wreck. That is what his parents always had told him, at least. It was understandable though. He acted quite carelessly, even if he had much potential. He needed to keep it in line, and the only way to do that was to try.
Part of him truly saw that spark of adventure in Elena, and was truly happy when he found someone who had felt the same enthusiasm as he did.
"Ay, by the way. What house are you in,anyways"" he inquired, wanted to make sure of his suspicions.
She seemed as if she could belong anywhere. She seemed to have a spark of bravery, yet she was so kind.. Well, she was in the library. It would certainly make sense for her to be a Ravenclaw due to this.

"So the matching diary books meant that if someone wrote something in one book, then it would appear in the other. They're really cool! I have one." Elena smiled brightly, "Nice to meet you Ross! This way."
Elena flipped out the hand-drawn map, it was clearly the work of someone young, except for the ridiculously neat writing labelling the shelves. They were right near the Muggle book section which meant the enchantment shelves were seven shelves up and twelve to the left, "Seven up, twelve left. I'm in Slytherin but that's only because my nickname chucked me over the side from a Gryffindor-Slytherin hat stall. Otherwise I would've chosen the nice high tower instead of the dungeon rooms but what can I say? Green suits me, I suppose. So I'm happy."
She smiled brightly at Ross, "And it doesn't hurt they made me deputy quidditch captain for Slytherin. Onwards!"
Elena started humming happily and padding off straight ahead the halls towards her target, it'd help her out at the very least. Nothing could hurt from having a nice bit of information about something interesting. Ross was also quite cool from what she'd seen, and there was never anything wrong with making a new friend or two.

The case 2
"Deputy of quidditch?" he asked, sounding somewhat curious "That sounds mighty interesting!" He remarked.
He began to follow Elena down the many bookshelves that could practically make up a labyrinth.
"I'M personally a Hufflepuff." he quickly added, making sure to exchange as much information as he was getting in return. ""Not quite sure what they do besides what I've learned from that odd talkin' hat, but it 'aught to be cool, or else I'm not interested." he stated rather jokingly.
As he followed along, it suddenly hit him what she had said before anything else she had said. Curiosity sparked within him, and on a whim he decided perhaps getting more information than giving may possibly be okay too. It was not as if he was that interesting, even though he refused to properly admit that to himself.
"Say, who do you talk to in the book? It sounds mighty interesting. It might even help solve this dire mystery! Journals have 'aught to do with journals, after all." He suddenly asked.
It did not even bother to cross his mind that the question could possibly be too personal. Who would fear responding to a few questions about a little book anyways? Besides, anyone could be a possible suspect! That was how crime worked, right? It was not as if he properly knew. He did not quite exactly suspect her, but still. It was best to be safe than sorry, right? That is what most people said at least. He sincerely doubted about half the students in this building felt that way, but he certainly did.

"It's a lot of fun! I like quidditch, and duelling, and chess. I wish there was a chess club." Elena smiled, "Hufflepuffs are meant to be good and pure. I think, but honestly I believe everyone is just a person. Whether you're a good or bad person doesn't depend on the colours you wear or what house you get chucked into, it's your actions. You can be loyal but still do bad things."
"I have no idea who I'm talking to, I didn't really want to break the magical feeling of talking to the journal you know? I don't think she knows who I am either." Elena looked at the map, "These shelves right abooout. Here."
Elena started to look for a book on enchanted objects, oddly enough, she hadn't looked for information about the journal before. Maybe it was because it felt like it'd disappear if she focused too hard, like a distant memory or the quickly fading shadow of a dream. Where the girl would be left grasping for the tiny details written in the journal. It was difficult to find beautiful things to do with magic, when you started to get used to it. History was full of dark wizards, and wizards who created new things just to show off.
It's the little things that are important, in the end.

Ross was quiet for a moment, thinking of what she said. He pondered and let it go through his mind, but soon saw they had arrived at their destination. He came to a halt and looked at the shelves. As he suspected, it was an overwhelming amount of information.
"S'pose that is true, but arent'cha curious at all?" He asked as he got down on his knees to search the lower part of the shelf for anything of use.
There was such a wide variety of possible things. The worst part was he did not even know what was possible. If he did, at least he would be able to catch a hint of what to do. The girl was shady and was dabbling in magical objects, that was pretty much it.
"Man.. I don't even know where to start." He remarked quietly as he looked through it all. "Also, i've never played chess, but I get'cha. I was just startin' to get interested in mellophone. I 'aughta pick it back up again over the summer. Wish there was more clear activities around here." He rambled slightly, trying to fill the quiet air.
In all honesty, he had no idea what he should be looking for. If the girl was shady, he had to find answers. While Elena seemed to find beauty in the unknown, he wanted to know what was hidden. Perhaps that made sense. They must have been raised in very different families was his conclusion.

"Of course I'm curious, but there are some things that are better unveiled with time rather than as soon as possible." Elena looked at the high shelves, leaping up to catch the ladder and climbing towards the top, "Cookbooks up here, damn."
Elena spun and slid down the ladder a little, "Old magical artifacts of the greeks, getting closer, still nothing on how to make them. If you see something on magical metalwork it'll likely be near that. Anything to do with novelties really."
Novelties, it was amazing what wizards thought of as trivial, like enchanting clocks to sing you the time, and turning glass into birds, but electricity was the power that belonged to the gods. To a point, she was sure the houses of most well-off wizards would've had electric lights, for obvious reasons. One of their galleons was five pounds as well, Elena could've found that under a vending machine, but a single galleon can buy so much. The exchange rates were whack.
"I joined a bunch of clubs but they all sorta died, the members just stopped showing up one day, or the leaders did. I'm not sure why or where the kids keep going but they go and do things. I tried to find out but I hit a brick wall. Mellophone?"
