Flying is for the Birds!?
The time had come. Dennis had sat back and watched match after match of quidditch and meet after meet of broom racing. He was determined today would be the day he would join in on the fun too!
The Ravenclaw made sure to dress warm on this brisk winter weekend and made his way to the pitch. Had he ever ridden a broom before? No. Did he know what he was doing? No. Did it matter? Not in the slightest. When the fiery redhead got it in his noggin to do something, he did it!
Dennis arrived on the pitch and looked around. There were a few other students of various levels seeming to also take the weekend as an advantage to get practice in. Some had fancy brooms and others were borrowing school brooms. At least he wouldn’t be alone.
He walked over to the storage room where the other brooms were being kept. Which one should he get? Well he should be considerate of others right? Therefore the brooms that looked newer or in better conditioned were ignored. He looked around and his sights landed on the perfect broom for his endeavors. To say this stick had seen better days is an understatement. It was in the corner and dust ladened. Always the one with the soft spot for misfits - and to be sure that signifier shouldn’t be given to old possibly dangerous equipment, but he couldn’t help himself. He was drawn to the old broom, like a boy to a mangy flea ridden puppy.
He picked it up with confidence. It was lighter than expected, whether because it was missing chunks of wood or straw, Dennis never paused to consider.
He took it out and mounted it. “Easy enough!” Dennis said triumphantly. Why was this so hard? He kicked off. The boy rose shakily off the ground teetering this way and tattering that way. He sat up straight but perhaps too fast. He lost his balance had fell the unimpressive 3 feet he got into the soft snow. Well, he thought, as he dusted himself off, maybe he just needed to go faster!
Dennis got back on the broom, and this time kicked off hard and leaned far forward as he saw racers and players do time and time again. He took off alright! But this time, he made it several yards before doing a nosedive into a snow bank. The second year rolled over on his back, broom laying at his side and coughed, staring up at the cloudy sky. Perhaps this flying wasn’t going to be as easy as he thought!

❂《 ⌜ November 10, 2024 ▎ Sometime during the day ⌟▛▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔Flying during the day, spellcasting during the evening or before dinner, that is Raizel’s new routine. As a broom racer, she has the obligation of training her flying skills along with her spellcasting. Flying had never crossed her mind as something she would enjoy in the beginning. She hated it to the core. Just imagining herself up in the skies makes her feel so sick and maybe a bit terrified. She swore she wouldn’t take any of the broom related sports and would instead stick with duelling but she was wrong. In the end, the sports that she loved betrayed her or rather, she found out in the hardest way possible that she was horrible at it, ending her career as a duellist. Broom Racing was what saved her from that state of despair after her horrible performance. It gave her the break she needed and eventually, she just fell in love with it.
Her experience as a duellist would still come in handy though as well as her new position in the duelling team as one of their Duelling Captains. A part of her still couldn’t tear itself away from that sport simply because she doesn’t want a certain someone to win, the reason why she still ended up trying out for the position. Aside from that, she has her own selfish desire of simply observing other duellists, to use them as her means of gaining more knowledge for her own growth. She’s doing everything she can to reach her goal even though most of the time, she feels like they aren’t enough.
Following their recent loss against Hufflepuff and her awful performance, Raizel knew it was time to work even harder, even if it meant breaking her body, reaching her limits. She had completely forgotten Cyrus’s words of wisdom, blinded by that desire of hers of getting better no matter what. As soon as she could, she grabbed her trusty Firebolt, making her way to the training pitch despite the cold weather. Her goal was to train even harder, work on some maneuvers in the air and maybe try to get the feel of casting spells while on the broom. That was her greatest regret. If only that depulso was successfully casted, then maybe she could’ve turned the tides. Till this day, that failure still haunts her like that incident in Hogsmeade. That’s why she needs to do better.
Upon arriving, she was expecting to start immediately… until something or rather, someone caught her attention. A boy, not from her year. Usually, she wouldn’t bother with people. She minds her own business but this boy just keeps on catching her eyes simply because… he just crashed. She visibly flinched, knowing full well how much crashing hurts considering she had done that a couple of times before whenever she tried to land while she was flying at full speed. Slowly, she approached him, looking down on him as he laid there on the ground. “Still alive?” She asked, just checking in case she had just witnessed a horrible accident and that the boy would need to be rushed to the hospital wing.

Flying is for the Birds!?
Dennis really hoped no one saw him as he decided to take a moment. How embarrassing would it be if someone saw him crash. He didn’t need to worry about “if” someone did as he heard footsteps crunching in the snow toward him. He huffed to blow a strand of his wild red hair out of his face, still not making a move to get up. He should just stay there, maybe if he doesn’t see this person, they won’t see him. He closed his eyes and he wished he could just melt into the snow. A thought: would melting into snow also cause it to melt?
“Still alive?” Came the youthful voice. Maybe someone else crashed. He opened one eye to see and sure enough a girl was standing over him. He sat up in a flash and dusted the snow off his clothes. “Uh…” Dennis muttered as he checked himself over. He gave himself a quick pinch on the cheek and winced, “I think so!” The snow had caught his fall so he sustained no injures as a result of the fall.
Dennis stood up out of the snow bank and retrieved the decrepit broom he had chosen. As he bent down he got look at her broom. A firebolt! Nice. He suddenly realized being bent over and staring at the girl was probably not the best look and straightened right away. “That’s a nice broom,” Dennis said, half apologetically, as he shook his absolutely pathetic excuse of a school broom lamely. “You, uh, fly here often?” Way to go, Dennis. “Maybe you could give me some pointers? I’m Dennis, by the way. Dennis Tumberton. But you can call me Denners, if you like, my friends do anyway.” Good save. Dennis reached out and offered his hand for a good hearted shake.

❂《 ⌜ November 10, 2024 ▎ Sometime during the day ⌟▛▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔Alive and lively, good, there was no need to haul him all the way up to the hospital wing then. No serious injuries, no broken bones. Maybe some bruises but that'll be something that he’ll feel later if that crash was nasty, speaking from experience. Then again, there was snow, acting as cushion so perhaps he might not have any lingering pains later. Lucky for him. Raizel stepped back, giving the boy some space as he picked himself up. She met his eyes when he looked over, following his gaze towards her broom.
That's a nice broom.
Raizel sometimes forgets that Firebolts are kind of on the side of fancy brooms. This was a broom that she kind of got in the most unexpected way. She needed one for a race, grabbed the broom that she found lying around and next thing she knew, she was ‘borrowing’ it all the time. It was never hers in the beginning but after a fateful encounter, the broom was rightfully passed onto hers. Thinking about it, it was one of the factors that sealed her fate in broom racing. “Thanks. Always make sure to take care of it.” She said back to the boy, noticing that his was the standard broom that they let students use. She's not the type of person who would make fun of someone because of that though for she just got lucky that she landed herself with a nice broom.
His question then made her chuckle, crossing her arms with a raised eyebrow and smirk. “This is the only place where we are allowed to practice so yes.” She answered although she did find that a bit weird. Then again, didn't she just break that rule before? To make it worse, Sereia Clairmont caught her. Luckily, the professor was kind enough to let her go without a detention and she even listened to her rants. “I’m not that great of a flyer though. I recently just started myself but… since you're starting out, why not taking it slow at first if you're having trouble staying in the air.” She suggested. “Raizel Voltrouz the name.” The girl introduced herself, shaking his hand as a form of respect to his introduction.

Flying is for the Birds!?
Dennis nodded as the Gryffindor said she took good care of the broom. He had hoped that she would just ignore his awkward line about flying there often. She did not. However, it did make her chuckle and his heart lightened with the sound of her laugh. There was just something about amusing girls that was different than being with the boys. He wasn’t really sure what it was but it didn’t matter at the moment. He finally woke up from his daydreaming when she shook his hand. Raizel huh? What an interesting name! “Raizel. It’s such a pleasure to meet you!” He said in his usual chipper tones.
Right, back to the topic. Brooms. Dennis wasn’t always so careful, if picking the worst broom in the closet wasn’t any indication. “Maybe I will get a broom like that and we can race! That would be fun!” Dennis said cheerfully, his dreadful series of crashes now long forgotten. He hoisted his ill-fated broom above his head. He paused and the broom slowly drifted downward. He had a long way to go before he could race… “Well,” he started, “Maybe we can race when I get better huh?”
“I will definitely take your words to heart! Let’s have another go!” He said, his sour moods never lasting very long. He mounted the broom again and kicked off gingerly this time, but with more confidence. He slowly rose in the air and ever so slightly leaned forward until he was hovering around in a circle around Raizel. He got it! He pumped his fist in the air and almost lost balance, catching himself before he fell off again. Gaining his composure again, Dennis gave a sheepish grin and slow wobbly thumbs up. “Someday, we can fly together!” The ever hopeful redhead said still slowly getting the hang of controlling the broom.

❂《 ⌜ November 10, 2024 ▎ Sometime during the day ⌟▛▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔Lively, too lively. It's people like him that Raizel somehow felt jealous of. The way they could smile so brightly, the absence of despair on their faces, or how it seems like they have no problem at all. Sometimes she wishes to have their lives, to be free from this tragic fate that she can't escape, to live a happy life. But those are dreams that won't ever come true. She is stuck in this life until she claws her way out of this abyss, preventing that self-loathing, frustration and madness from consuming her with all the misfortunes that strike one after another. Luckily, the kind of smile that Dennis has was contagious, enough to blow away the doom and gloom cloud that threatened to hover above the Gryffindor even for just a short time. It helped in lightening her mood, giving her a temporary source of illumination in her darkening world.
“Pleasure to meet you as well Dennis.” She told him before showing a cheeky grin. “If you feel like you are good enough then yeah, why don't we have a race.” With Hogwarts having thousands of students, it would be surprising if they do meet again, considering that they are not on the same year as far as she knows and knowing her, she might eventually forget about him but he did made quite a first impression, much like Cass Ito when they got stuck inside the Quidditch Hoops. Dennis will be known as ‘the boy who crashed’ in her mind, helping her remember them. “I’m sure you’ll get better in no time if you keep on working hard. Make sure to take a break as well.” She reminded him, slapping herself mentally for not following her own advice.
The boy seemed to have gotten the hang of it rather easily with how he began hovering around her and in a way. Raizel crossed her arms as she watched him intently, his form, his movements. Far from an expert but this is a good start for him. “Looks like you got it. I look forward to the day we fly together.” Practicing with other people can be fun and this way, he’s helping Dennis out get some practice. Raizel gave Dennis a thumbs up, returning his gesture. “Keep practicing. I’ll see you around.” She said one final time before hopping onto her own broom. It was time to start her routine, get back to training. She has a lot of things to do, a lot of catching up. She can't afford being left behind even further.

Flying is for the Birds!?
This Raizel lady was really a great coach he thought as he continued to nod and take in her instructions. He wasn’t exactly sure what to make of her now that he had a higher vantage point. She seemed a little bit mopey in her demeanor but her advice was very straightforward and helpful. Perhaps she just had an upset stomach, he concluded having known nothing about his new friend. He knew he had a tendency to seem a bit down when his tummy hurt too. That had to be it. He was excited, though, that she seemed to believe that he had the ability to race her someday. She must really really believe in him, this was the only conclusion the ever optimistic Ravenclaw could come to! He was lucky to have someone so supportive. He hoped they would meet again and he would show her how much he improved.
Now to get down. Dennis took a deep breath and slowly his broom lowered until his feet were on the soft snow. He looked over to Raizel but she had already mounted her own broom and started her practice. Someday, Dennis thought, as he watched her for a few minutes, he was going to be like his new friend! He would be sure to NEVER forget her. He would know her as “the girl who believes in him” this way he would always remember her.
Dennis dismounted fully and walked the school broom back to the closet. He thought he was ready for a better broom and next time he would definitely choose one that was in better shape now that he would NEVER crash again, certainly never in front of his new friend! Once the broom was away he turned around to watch Raizel practice her maneuvers for a while longer before heading back to the castle.
