Time flies as fast as the blink of an eye, that's what people say, and that's true. It's been a whole year since Sere became a duellist for Gryffindor. Actually, it might be less than appropriate to say that 'time flies so fast', especially when talking about how many spells had flown to her over the past year. Of course every pain felt like forever. However, Sere was already enjoying her current role, being a never-satisfied duellist.

Training was important, and Sere had never missed any training session before competing in an official duel, nor this time. Even though the upcoming Winter Games would be her fourth time in an official duel, she did not slack off and still chose to prepare fully, taking herself up on the piste today for a training session.

Emily was kind enough to agree being her opponent in this unofficial duel. Sere didn't know whether her goal was just to accompany her practicing or the Hufflepuff girl had the intention of avenging her defeat in the Fall Games. In any case, Sere was very grateful for her willingness. The moderator was another duellist, Mylo Atkins. Sere only knew Mylo as a part of Murder of Merlin, and Mylo was quickly willing to lend a hand in moderating her duel with Emily when she asked for it.

Sere was now on the piste, pulling the wand from under her robe, aimed at Emily as she carried out her first action.

A rematch with Sere Nade! When Emily was contemplating how to go about practicing for the new season of duelling - especially after the disaster from her first match - her ideas had fallen short of guaranteed improvement until Sere made the proposal to her. Sere had always been a good sport, both on and off the duelling piste. Not only was Emily not going to say no to her after how good she had been to her since then, but a friendly rematch would do Emily the world of good to understand the Gryffindor team's success. As it stood right now, Hufflepuff needed to get their act together, their defeat last season being a major wake-up call for pursuing victory.

Emily skipped into the room where Sere was already present with Mylo at her side. Ah, so Mylo would be overseeing the match! Emily grinned at both of them as she approached the piste.

"So! I take it you guys are already ready to start? Well, I'm ready if you are!" she beamed, her hand already reaching for her wand tucked into her sleeve.

She stood up on the piste opposite Sere, sending her a respectful nod before taking up her "Ready to Rock and Roll" duelling stance. "I won't be flying off the stage this time, Sere!

Emily was locked in when Mylo gave the signal. Her first move already in mind, Emily got to work.

Both of the duellists took on their stance, ready to fire spells at the other and defend themselves from spells coming their way. As they signalled for the match to start Mylo couldn't wait to see the strategies that would unfold before their eyes. Granted it was a 1v1 meaning that there wouldn't be much strategy with teammates but strategy with yourself was as important as with others.

And thus Mylo was paying very close attention, not just in case something went wrong - although they absolutely were keeping an eye out for anything bad - but also to see the other duellists techniques and spells. Maybe they could pick up some things that he could use in their own duels.

Although as the first round of spells were fired off Mylo was shocked to say the least, both Emily and Sere had chosen solid spells that would be beneficial to them in the long run. Unfortunately for them both spells went wrong, backfiring miserably. Sere's spell, which was meant to tickle Emily, reared it's head and instead targeted it's original caster. Emily's spell also didn't reach it's intended target as something went wrong which caused her own wand to go flying out of her hand instead of Sere's.

It was quite the sight to see, although Emily seemed to be in better shape than Sere. Looking over at the duellists Mylo made sure that there had been no severe damage and continued took a step back again, hoping for the other two that the next set of spells would work in their favour.

Wait. What??

The spell backfired! How?? Why??

Emily was stunned as she watched her spell flash and her wand fly out of her hand. She blinked and narrowed her eyes unamusingly. The whole point of that spell was to disarm Sere, not herself!

How could that be a thing?! Even with things like fencing with swords in the Muggle world didn't sink down to this level of bizarre and dangerous consequences.

Well this went off to a terrific start... Emily stood still as she waited for Sere to gain the advantage and fire back at Emily... Sere won their previous match for several good reasons, one of which being a stellar caster. Emily resigned herself that Sere was going to succeed against her this round... Only to see that Sere's attack backfired as well! Emily winced as Sere took damage from her own efforts before gasping out a laugh. How out of character for both of them to see their own spells go down with tremendous failure.

"Perhaps we got a bit too ambitious back there," she said.

Hopefully her mistake meant that she would be smooth sailing the rest of the way. After all, it wasn't about how you started, it was how you finished when achieving something.

Emily quickly scanned her surroundings. She couldn't duel without a wand, so where the hay was it...?

The signal for the first round to start was heard from the moderator and Sere immediately cast a spell that was on her mind. "Rictusempra!" It would be fun to see Emily laugh with The Tickling Charm, as well as to see if Emily also hated this spell just like her. "Crap!" Her thoughts were completely shattered when she saw, instead of aimed at her practice opponent, the spell went up through her arm and hit herself. Her Rictusempra firebacked to herself. Oh no, I can feel the tickling sensation!

On the other hand, she could see Emily trying to disarm her wand by casting Expelliarmus, but gosh! The results of their spell-casting were exactly the same, both of them failed to release their first spell. Sere, who had laughed because of the ticklish effect of her own spell, this time rather than being annoyed, felt more grateful for the fireback. She let out a genuine laugh, finding it hilarious how both Emily and her had gotten over serious but ended up casting spells carelessly, and since laughing out loud wasn't a Sere Nade thingy, Rictusempra's effects helped her to hide it. Although Sere didn't know whether the other two students on the piste realized that her laugh wasn't forced at all.

"You're right. We were so ambitious." Sere agreed with Emily as she wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes. The tension on the piste is loosen up, but now I have to back on ambitious mode. Sere prepared herself for the next move.

Both duellists were quickly back at it again, with Emily having to spend some time looking for her wand so that she too could attempt another spell. Luckily she seemed to find it reasonably quickly, unfortunately this mishap had given Sere an opportunity to once again try to cast a spell.

This time it seemed that luck was on her side, as she fired of a spell that hit it's target perfectly. Leaving Emily to be hit by a stream of flames bursting out of the Sere's wand. Mylo winced as they remembered their own duel, although they hadn't been the recipient of the flames themselves they remembered the unpleasant sight, although that sight had been removed from them shortly after by a blindfold.

And both duellists seemed to be standing after all that, once again giving them a once over to make sure both were still good Mylo let the duel continue, getting curious as to how this would end, hoping that they'd see some more strategies they could maybe pick something up from. Although they knew that for a 1v1 duel there was only so much strategy that could be used, maybe they should moderate a bigger duel? They quickly pushed the thought away as they focussed on the duel that was currently in play, as they couldn't afford to miss anything in case something went wrong.

What a terrific start to a duel. Just perfect. Absolutely flawless. Every round so far was going wrong for Emily. She never claimed to be the best duellist in the school. She was proficient at most, but this was absolutely horrendous! She never failed so much at duelling during her last match, so what on earth was happening here?

Thanks to that Expelliarmus Screw-Up, Sere had the perfect opening to cast Incendio Duo at the Huffie. Ouch! Within the blink of an eye, Emily was fanning herself out helplessly while flames engulfed her being. She whimpered and gasped as she battled the flames and so many were there to fight with. Her throat felt constricted with the smell of the smoke and didn't dare to open her eyes out of fear of burning them off.

A fantastic effort at casting by Sere, for sure, but Emily would rather take care of these flames before she became a charcoaled, barbecued Huffie. That wouldn't be a very flattering look to walk around in. On the other hand, Emily still needed to land a hit against Sere otherwise she was essentially letting her Gryffindor rival blast her to bits without any comeback.

One thing at a time. With the gut instinct kicking in and finally recovering her lost wand from the last round, Emily knew what she had to do next.

The second round and Sere did not want to repeat the same failure. She could see her position was not very advantageous with the ticklish sensation still lingering from the fireback on the first round, but if she looked at the big picture, her situation was not the most disadvantageous because Emily now lost her wand. A good time to cast an offensive spell.

Hoping that this spell would not fail too, like it did in the first round, the Gryffindor girl cast Incendio Duo, targeting the Badgers and this time the fire spell worked very well. Of course, Emily was looking down and looking for her wand, what could she expect? The success was not something to be proud of, but a failure was more than something she could accept. Thankfully that failure didn't happen.

Sere could see the flaming Emily had already gotten her wand back. Meaning she had to be watchful for the next round. Her eyes were directed forward, staring sharply, trying to read the next action of her opponent while not wanting her own action to be read.

Sere nodded slightly as she had decided what action she would take. She could see that Emily also knew what she wanted to do as well. Good, now they can start the next round.

Both parties now once again having their wands Mylo was glad to see that this round was more about thinking ahead and not about doing damage. As it seemed like Emily was trying to make sure that she didn't keep getting hurt with the flames surrounding her by putting them out, which Mylo could wholeheartedly understand as they could not be comfortable in the slightest, and Sere using one of the spells Mylo themselves knew to give herself an advantage in the next few seconds.

As the blindfold settled over Emily's eyes Mylo sympathised with her, they had been on both ends of the spell and knew that although it was great to use on someone else and made it a lot easier to hit them, having it cast on yourself and seeing nothing for a bit was quite unpleasant. And although when they had gotten blindfolded he had continued casting Mylo was curious to see if Emily would implement the same strategy and maybe have more success or if she would use some time to take the blindfold off. Although he did sympathise with the amount of time the Hufflepuf had spent this duel not casting spells but trying to get to a point where she could.

Watching the duel unfold they starting thinking about strategies they might have used and wondered what he would see next.
