The air was getting chilly - not surprising, given it was already November. Novalie pulled the jacket tighter around herself. Ollie had given it to her and though she had a big, cozy hand-me-down from her brother, wearing her best friend’s jacket felt infinitely cooler. It fit her better, too, so she wore it whenever she could before giving it back. The redhead wandered across the grounds, glad for the opportunity to stretch her legs. Lately, she hadn’t been spending much time outdoors, which was a shame. It wasn’t the cold that kept her inside, though. Detentions and the mountain of studying she had to catch up on were the real culprits - consequences of her habit of getting distracted during theoretical classes. Classes that required listening and reading rather than using her wand were the absolute worst. Seriously. But right now? Novalie was finally free and she had someone special to visit: Caviar. Caviar was a little spider friend she’d made back in September, on one of the days she dozed off in a tree. She’d woken to find him crawling curiously on her robe. At the time, she thought she didn’t have space in her life for a pet, even a tiny one. Yet, here she was, making regular visits to the spots where he spun his webs. When she first met him, he’d been so small! Now, every time she came to check on him, she noticed he’d grown. Today was no different. “Hello, little Caviar!”, Novalie called out with a grin, standing beneath a nearly bare tree. The almost leafless branches made it easier to spot his dark web. To anyone else, Caviar might look like just another spider among many, but Novalie was certain this one was her friend. Probably. Right? Without hesitation, the Metamorphmagus began climbing the tree. When she reached one of the sturdier branches near him, she settled herself down comfortably. Caviar jumped onto her hand almost immediately, which Novalie took as a sign of affection. More likely, though, he simply recognized her and tolerated her presence. Still, even when his jump had been quick just now, she couldn’t help noticing that his movements seemed slower than usual. “Hmmm..”, Novalie tilted her head as she inspected the baseball-sized spider in her palm. Could spiders get cold? She wasn’t sure, but it seemed likely. After all, spiders always seemed to make their way into houses during the winter. It wasn’t like you ever saw them frolicking in the snow or something. “Tell you what!”, she said, her grin widening, “I’ll take you inside with me. Don’t worry - you can roam around as much as you like. I’m sure no one will mind, since you’re so cute and all.” With that, she placed Caviar on top of her head and began climbing back down the tree. “And let's get you a treat while at it! I bet the Magical Menagerie has more to offer than the little insects around here, don't you think?” It wasn’t long before Novalie found herself visiting the pet store. True to her word, she brought along some insect snacks for her little friend. However, to her, they didn’t seem all that different from what she could have found outside with a bit of digging. And he didn’t even touch it! Caviar was apparently a picky eater. True to his name, quite the distinguished gentleman, wasn’t he? Maybe next time, she’d just let Caviar catch his own prey. It had worked well enough before, hadn’t it?
