Hopeful but Hollow
Dated for : Saturday - Sept 7th 2019
The past week had flown by for Lark. After summer ended and classes started time seemed to be going so much faster than she anticipated. She hadn't come back to the Owlery for the last couple days after having come with her friends. There was something that tugged at her every time she walked by on her way to the Ravenclaw Common Room... but each time she buried the feeling.
Today however... Her father's birthday she couldn't help but be drawn here. Standing in front of the empty birdbath, straw stuck to the inside and some owl droppings covering the rim, Lark took out an old shirt she had brought. Ripping it to a couple smaller rags she dipped it in a bucket of water she had managed to bring from the girl's bathroom. Cleaning around the edge of the bath and picking out all the straw, Lark scrubbed it clean. Or well as clean as it would be. Coming to the top most spot on the fourth landing she knew she would be able to have some quiet to write. Not to mention maybe some quality time with a couple of the owls she had become fond of during the summer.
Although being up this high meant it had been much chillier than she had anticipated and cursed herself for leaving her uniform scarf on the common room couch. She had been in such a rush and scattered thoughts making sure she had stuff for the owls, some treats and all her writing tools. Pushing up the sleeves on her sweatshirt the silver haired girl picked up the bucket of clean water and carefully poured it into the birdbath. Even with the cold weather she hoped it would be something the owls could enjoy.
Tossing the dirty and torn up bits of shirt into the bucket she set it by the stairs to take on her way out. For now it was time to sit and write a letter out... Taking a seat by one of the open windows she crossed her legs and placed her journal in her lap. Quill in hand it was almost as if everything rushed out of her at once. Her hand started slow scribbling out a standard greeting but as she wrote her writing became more and more furious.
Lark's hand ached from gripping her quill so tightly it caused her to stop. She set her quill down as tears fell to the parchment. Sniffling and wiping away at her eyes she stared angrily down at the words. A part of her hated being here. It made her feel guilty, especially having met James and everyone else. Tears pulled at the dark ink making the scribbled out letters distort. She couldn't send this. No matter how angry she was... how sad she was. A tingling sensation prickled at the back of her neck as she stared down at her venom she had spewed onto the letter. Really... she didn't hate her father at all.. she just felt so awfully lonely that sometimes it took her breath away. Especially at night laying in her bed in the quiet of the dorms where all of her emotions pushed down from the day could bubble up and be heard.Pa,
Happy Birthday! I'm sorry I can't be there with you and Ma. I wish that I could be home with you guys. Hopefully over break I will get to see you all for the Holiday. Things here have been going well, as I wrote in my last letter. Speaking of letters... I still haven't heard from anyone. I haven't even heard from you. Gran bothered to write me in summer... but I wish you had. I wish you had let me come home. Why? Is Ma too busy with the baby? Is it because of how I was at the platform? Why didn't you want me home. Why did you send me away like nothing. I miss everyone.. I miss home and.. I just cry every dang night.. Pa let me come home please I can't stop being angry at you. I don't understand. Why cant I hate this. I hate what you did. I hate you. YOU LEFT ME HERE WHY WHY WHY
No... there was no way she could send this.
Snatching up the parchment in her hand and crumpling it into a ball she pelted it at the bucket of rubbish she would take care of later. It hit the edge and fell to the floor making her a little more annoyed.
Lark rubbed at her eyes as more tears streamed down her cheeks. 'This is ridiculous..' She thought bitterly. She felt like such a baby crying her eyes out when she had just come here to send a quick birthday letter out before lunch. Picking her quill back up she tried again...
That would have to do... Lark stared down once more at the words she had written. They looked normal to her but... she felt so hollow from them. If anything maybe it would result in a response. Quietly more tears fell from her golden eyes. She would wait to fold it neatly and seal it before sending it. Perhaps staring at the words would eventually make them feel real. Tugging at one of her silver braids she could only hope.
Happy Birthday Papa!! You probably thought I forgot but guess again! I hope you and Ma are having cakes. I can't wait to come home this Holiday and see everyone! I love you, write back to tell me about the baby!
Miss you all so much
Lark

Hopeful but Hollow
James had a bundle of letters in his hands. Most of them were to other students. He had grown to love sending letters to other students in his time here. He found that whatever name he wrote the letter would be dropped, either straight into their Common Room or directly to them at the breakfast table. He would often as a prefect or a teacher the name of a student he spotted in the halls and then send them a random note, with something ominous or confusing written inside, as the letters could be sent anonymously. He'd sent a group of first year Hufflepuff girls identical letters that simply read "Beware of the Toad", which had gotten the Hufflepuff breakfast table a buzz with gossip about the exact whereabouts and nature of this Toad in which they had to beware. Much to James' amusement a sign had been place outside of the Hufflepuff Commonroom that simply said "ALL TOADS MUST BE INSPECTED UPON ENTRY"
He had to admit, he just loved to watch the Owls fly off into the distance... they were beautiful in their way, gliding through the air like snowflakes caught on the wind.
As he entered the Owlery his attention was captured by the sound of a sniffle on one of the upper levels. As he climbed the stairs to investigate he saw his silver-haired friend sobbing over a letter.
He placed his pile of letters gently on a shelf and approached the girl.
"Now, we can't be crying in the Owlery, young lady," he said, hoping to make her laugh, "That's what the girl's bathrooms are for."

Nearly jumping out of her skin, Lark rushed to clear her eyes from the tears and rustled to fold up her letter. Mustering a quick smile she looked up at her friend.Interacting with @James McMurtrie
"Right! Sorry!" She sniffed and tucked the extra parchment into her journal, pulling out an envelope. Lark hadn't expected anyone to come up this far into the Owlery, let alone James. But if it had to be anyone to find her in this state she was thankful it was him instead of someone she didnt know that might not be so kind. This was good enough to send out today giving the owl time to find her family and deliver the birthday wishes.
"Everything has just been so crazy since we got here y'know?" Fighting back another wave of tears, Lark took a deep breath.
"It's not that I dont like being here." She paused to look up at James. Maybe it sounded whiny to him, she wasnt sure. He had left his entire family and best friend behind when he came here. She couldn't imagine the things he had to give up having come from a Muggle home. Yet, here she sat crying over her own family. "Dont get me wrong! I'm thankful we all met... and last night was so much fun with the sleepover." Her voice trailed off as her eyes wandered to the window to watch the owls coming and going. "You know what I mean, ya?" Adjusting herself to sit with her legs criss-crossed she shuffled over to make room in case he decided to join her.
"I know you had ta leave a lot behind too. I'm sorry." Her tone was a bit more serious. Lark knew full well why the Statute of Secrecy was in place.... but it did seem unfair in certain situations. She felt a bit uneasy sitting here making such a big fuss over her issues when in the meantime James and even her other friends had their own.
"Do you think it's worth it? Having magic an' all that? When all these other people haven't any idea." She wondered, mainly a question in general but directed af James as well. She had never questioned it before but now she thought what things might be like had she just been born into a Muggle family or even without magic.

James sat down next to his friend, drawing his knees up underneath his chin. He considered her question, but he knew the answer wasn't difficult to find...
"No." he said pointedly looking into the girl's golden eyes, "Spells, magic... it's all brilliant, but in comparison to people... Lark, my friends are infinitely more valuable to me than any of this stuff."
He took a breath, and sighed deeply, "But you... you're worth giving it all up." he felt the blood rushing to his cheeks and he quickly amended his statement, "I mean, you guys. The Order of the Dawn. I'd give up my magic in a second for you guys."
He looked away for a moment. It felt strange but his fondness for Lark went beyond that of anyone else in their little group. He could tell what the feelings were... simply loyalty as she was his first friend here at Hogwarts, just a deeper friendship because they'd spend more time together... a crush?
He had trouble sorting through the feelings in his head and his heart.
"Tell me about your family," he said softly, as that had been a topic Lark had not yet spoken much about, bits and pieces maybe but he just felt like there was something more going on under the surface, "It must have been pretty amazing growing up in a wizarding family. Your parents must have been so proud when they dropped you off on the train on Sunday..." he offered her a kind smile.

Drawn in by James' response, Lark met his gaze. His rich brown stare locking with her own. It was then she noticed how his eyes seemed to be a mixture of warm earthy tones, not just a single shade of brown. They were deeper and intricate just like her friend seemed to be. It was somehow comforting and reminded her of home. There was a seriousness to them in this moment that she hadn't seen before.Interacting with @James McMurtrie
He was right... she couldn't agree more. The feeling her friends gave her was more than she had felt with magic. Maybe it was her lack of experience around others, but it gave her something far more than magical spells or fancy tricks had ever done.
"But you... you're worth giving it all up."
Lark's heart fluttered into her throat. She noticed color spreading across the boy's face almost signaling a rosy hue to emerge from her own cheeks as well.
"I mean, you guys. The Order of the Dawn. I'd give up my magic in a second for you guys."
As James looked away, Lark followed suite and tugged at her braid once more. "Right, me too!" She replied nervously, her voice wavering. Trying to swallow the still fluttering that tickled her throat and stomach, Lark felt a little light headed. Her mind raced almost as if two voiced debated back and forth, 'What had he meant? Well he did say you... sure but he said guys after. Of course he meant everyone, it couldn't just be her. Although 'you' had come first... nah there was no way. It was just a slip of the tongue... right?' Nibbling at her lower lip, the two sides tried to pick apart and analyze what the boy had said. Slowly a shade of pale pink color began to creep up from the tips of her hair, unnoticed by the girl as she got more and more caught up in her mind.
"Tell me about your family,"
Coming to, the silver haired girl looked back to her friend with a smile, pink fading back to a bluish silver. Lark let go of her smile at the mention of being dropped off. A flash of her father's face erased all her other thoughts. Brushing some stray hair from in front of her eyes, she considered her answer for a moment. Up until today she had pushed the feelings so far down she was afraid if she answered James that it might leave a rather large hole. Yet... something about him drew it from her. Not as if it was being torn away but instead gently coaxed forth into the open.
"Actually... My Pa dropped me off as soon as the first train left for camp." She sucked in a short breath and held it before slowly releasing. "My mother was supposed ta have my brother this summer an' they wanted ta make sure I would be-" 'out of the way' A voice hissed inside her head, "around others here so I wouldn't be alone at home."
Lark sat up and turned to face James. Clenching her jaw shut she brought her hands together in her lap, rubbing her thumb on the inside of her palm.
"I-..." Trying to arrange the jumble of emotions that started to push at the end of her mind. "I haven't heard from them at all.. an' I'm worried. I'm so worried.. I don't know if somethin' happened, if my mom.. my brother.. I don't know if they're okay or-" Everything seemed to hit her at once. Squeezing her hands together she tried to slow her thoughts feeling a little like her breath was being sucked from her lungs.
"I wanted ta write to them, I tried. I heard nothing.. Maybe they left me here since they have a new baby?" Lark stared at James almost wishing he had some sort of answer, knowing he couldn't but she wasn't sure where else to look anymore. The overwhelming thought of being replaced hit Lark in the stomach. She only had her parents and her Gran, she had never even shared them with anyone else before. How could she do that now? She had been so excited about her baby brother that it never crossed her mind they might find him a more suitable child. "They always did keep me inside..." It may have sounded like a strange thing to say to James, but she hadn't really noticed she was saying it aloud now. New realizations hit her one after another as she started to go back through the life she lived at home all these years.
Lark's vision blurred as she looked down into her lap, her eyes glistening almost appearing a dark blue for a split second.
It all came rushing out. She told him everything.
Growing up for years never going far from home, her father scolding her severely when she had just tried to slip out to town with her Gran last year. Never being allowed to be around other children and eventually the huge family blowout that caused them to move across southern Ireland. It had never made sense to her but she never questioned her parents and loved the time she spent with them. They did anything for her and were extremely affectionate... Lark told him stories of her father spending practically all of his time with her, leaving his job and how she had always thought it was the best thing but now was questioning why it felt more like he was watching over her and keeping her at home. Eventually her father had to work again, this time from home which meant she was left on her own so she learned to keep to herself... drawing and spending most of her days outside, alone. Fighting back more tears, Lark explained how her parents had been so excited about learning that she would have a brother and just how much she couldn't wait to be a big sister. She had made countless drawings to decorate his bedroom. How the longer her mother was pregnant, the more her parents seemed to become invested in each other and shut her own. Whispering around her and arguing more and more. There had even been a couple weeks where her mother had left for her Gran's and spent all of her time.. only sending an Owl on Lark's birthday this past May. She hadn't even come to wish Lark off the day her father brought her to the train station.. and how... her father didn't even tell her that she WOULDN'T be returning over summer and never gave an answer to when she would be allowed back home... Almost out of breath Lark finally sniffed and wiped at the last of the tears on her freckled face.
"I didn't even get a proper goodbye. I was so angry.. I shouldn't have been that way, I know it. I just-" She wiped another line of teardrops from her cheeks. "I turned away from him. I don't know why, I just did." Guilt formed a nasty lump in her stomach making her feel even worse on top of the crying having made her nauseous all over again. Realizing she had just spent a better half of the past... however long it had been with this long winded stream of information to her friend she felt embarrassment flush her cheeks. "I'm sorry." She bowed her head slightly. Lark had noticed her friend coming here with a stack of letters and here she was taking up his time with her problems.

James grabbed the girl's hand with both of his and looked at her pointedly.
"First of all," he said,"Don't apologize for talking to me about your problems. As your friend it's my job to listen to your problems."
He squeezed her hand gently as a reassuring gesture,
"Secondly, that sucks. That really really sucks. And I'm sure your parents are great, but I'm kinda mad at them for treating my friend that way. You don't deserve it. You really don't."
He let go of her hand, leaning back up against the wall with a sigh.
"I think if anything bad happened to them, you'd have gotten a letter from the Ministry or something. I think no letters means they're probably fine, yeah?" he said, hoping that approaching things logically was the right call...
"Maybe their letters have just gone missing or something? Like- could an Owl get lost? Does that happen?" he though, turning to the girl, "I can't imagine anybody not wanting to send a letter... to you. You're brilliant Lark Flaer."
He leaned back against the wall again and looked at the Owls, hundreds of them pruning themselves around the great, stone room. They looked almost like sand and snow, a sea of grey and brown and white shifting gently in the cool Scottish wind.
"It seems really weird - I mean, it sounds like - like I don't know - they were scared of people - seeing you? Which - like maybe they weren't worried about themselves but about you... Could they have been protecting you from something? Is there anything... strange - about... gosh I don't mean strange - I just mean, is there any reason in particular they might want to protect you particularly... you're not like a werewolf are you? or like - do have crazy out of control Ice-powers" he hoped he wasn't hurting the girl's feelings with this line of questioning, but he wanted to help her uncover the mystery of her predicament, it seemed to him that nobody could just want to hide Lark away for no reason, "That last bit was a reference to a movie by the way, keep forgetting you haven't seen those." he added.

James taking her hand and reassuring her relieved some pressure that had been building in her chest. Until now she had not realized the amount of things she had been bottling up.@James McMurtrie
"You're right... it can't be all that bad.." She let out a breath. Anything really bad would have warranted a letter or even something to the Headmaster to let Lark know. So they really must just be busy.
Lark smiled at his compliment and gave a small thank you' in reply. Already she felt immensely better talking with him, being able to get all of this off her chest. She wasnt sure how she would be able to let him know just how much she appreciated listening...even offering her advice or trying to soothe her worries.
"It seems really weird - I mean, it sounds like - like I don't know - they were scared of people - seeing you.."
Lark slowly nodded as she absorbed what James had to say. Could they have been? It would make sense, but why?
"Maybe..."[/color] Lark tried to think back to her parents hushed conversations in her father's study. They had argued about a family member... an aunt? Forcing the memory from the depths of her mind she tried to picture it, her eyes squeezed shut. Her aunt.. crazy white hair, golden eyes, she had shown up and been pointing at Lark yelling some sort of nonsense, so her father said.
"I think so, it would make more sense.. I just dunno what it could be." She grimaced. "Can't be anything too bad. I've never changed inta something else or even had a bad outburst with magic." Perhaps she could ask her parents in her next owl...or even her Gran. She might be more forthcoming.
"Crazy ice powers," She giggled. "Now that would be awesome." Standing up she brushed off some stray bits of hay from her overalls. She watched as an owl swooped in and took advantage of the bath she filled. "You'll have ta show me what movies are.. not ta mention all this other cool muggle stuff." Lark smiled and closed up her journal. Offering him a hand to help him up.
"Thank you James." Lark's voice a little more serious as she stared at him. He really had helped...
Lark would help the boy up and then pause for a moment before hugging him.
OOC: IF HES COOL WITH IT
"So what brings Good King James here?" A grin spread across the girl's face. Hoping it hadn't flustered him with her change in topic, she just decided to not dwell on it too much more for now...and her stomach was starting to growl in protest.

Hopeful but Hollow
When Lark mentioned movies James felt his excitement well within him for a moment.
"Yes! Oh, you're definitely coming back to my place in the Winter and we're having a movie night!" he said, "And before you say anything. Know, that you don't have a choice."
Lark thanked him for his help, and he felt strange. Like his help hadn't been enough. They hadn't gotten to the bottom of Lark's issue at all, but he felt all she needed at this stage was to vent. Perhaps this mystery was one to be solved at a later date.
Lark hugged him, and he squeezed the girl tightly to him, holding her close. He didn't feel like letting her go, as if everything would be fine if they stayed there forever, close to one another, embracing in the rain of feathers.
As they let go, she asked him what he was doing.
A cheeky grin erupted onto his face. "I'm sending out letters to random students that say the DWS stinks, and then there's a few here just to students that looked lonely and seemed like they needed cheering up. I also have some prank letters that I'm sending to the Hufflepuffs. And..."
He blushed for a moment, he'd impulsively written "I think you're cute" on a letter to a Gryffindor girl he'd seen in the hall, and now somewhat regretted it, but he wasn't sure - amongst all the others - which one it actually was.
He handed her half the pile, "You wanna help me? Maybe it'll help you get your mind off your parents for a bit..." he turned to her, "But, Lark Flaer, I swear on my life, that we will get to the bottom of this mystery... together."

Lark didn't even have time to open her mouth to protest at his offer to join him over Winter break, but a part of her was sure she wouldn't want to turn it down regardless of her parent's wishes. At this point she would rather go visit him than sit at her Grans by herself the entire break.@James McMurtrie
"You're sending out... what!" Lark giggled a bit shocked, she thought it had been letters to his family. Instead her friend was just up to some sort of shenanigans. She laughed at the thought of what each message could say. Knowing James it could be anything.
"The Hufflepuffs! What are you up to with them?" Picking one of the letters out of the pile she looked it over. Judging by the pile of envelopes he had taken quite a lot of time to get these all together. He stopped short of his sentence making Lark look up at him and blink.
Welcoming some of the letters she chuckled. "Sure I'll help out!" Organizing them into a nicer stack she set them on one of the shelves to sort for the owls. Sending letters to anyone involving the DWS could help their group out more with fending off the toxic mindset they were starting to spread through Hogwarts.
"Maybe you'll get a reply back!" She waved one of the letters at him with a smile. Glancing at the name it was obviously a girl, good idea! He must be trying to feel out the different female students in each house to see if Savannah had gotten to them yet. Brilliant!
Lark went over to one of the owls and proceeded to get it ready to send the letter out, before returning to her half of the pile. Asking nicely and even offering a treat to each owl before handing them the letters.

Hopeful but Hollow
As Lark waved the letter in front of James his face went beetroot red. He knew exactly which letter it was now that he saw the name.
"I'll send that one!" forgetting about volume control, and almost shouting at her. She had already tied the letter to the owl's leg as James reached her.
He tried in vain the grab at the letter, tugging at one protruding corner of the envelope as the disgruntled Owl fluttered over his head. The Owl perched itself atop one of the highest rafters in the tall building and as it landed the letter became dislodged, landing neatly on a long oak beam, far above their heads.
He looked on, mortified, at the letter, well out of his reach... it would have been extremely embarrassing had the letter been delivered straight to it's addressee but far more embarrassing was the thought of it falling from the ceiling and landing at the feet of any random passer by. He wondered what might happen if Tatiana or Savannah were to pick it up.
He made the choice that the only reasonable course of actions was to climb up and get it. He noticed that the beams and perches lined up in such a way that he could likely climb circuitously around to where the letter sat.
He quickly ran over, pulled himself up onto the edge of the bird bath and with two hands grabbed onto a thin beam that ran above it. It was likely only there to serve as a perch for the owls, but the wood was strong and took his weight easily. He heaved himself up, balancing precariously on the thin plank, searching for his next point of ascent.
