Facing Fears...? (Open) Closed

Angie had avoided going to the library as much as she could, especially when she was by herself. It was strange, as she normally would revel in being around books so much. However, something about the library unnerved her. The blocked-off section of the library, in particular, caused a shiver to run down her spine, especially when she read the sign stating it was "Restricted." She had never been to a library with a restricted section before, and she had been to a large library at Oxford College with her father on one of his trips to learn about Algebraic findings one summer.
Even now, Angie clutched her Basic Algebra book under her arm as she peeked her head into the library. She just needed a place to study, and her common room seemed much too busy with everyone coming back from the winter holidays. She smiled to herself as she remembered the notebooks that she had gotten from her parents to keep track of notes and stay on top of her studies (both those from the Muggle world that she had determined to keep learning as best as she could and those from Hogwarts that got to be more and more advanced by the day). The notebook with Bugs Bunny on it was under her arm along with her Algebra book, and looking at the colorful cover of it somehow gave her enough courage to tiptoe into the library, find a desk, sit down at it, and open her Algebra book to start her next lessons. Angie's father, being the local Muggle Algebra teacher at a secondary school, taught her some basic things over break when she asked while they made Christmas cookies. Now back at Hogwarts for the other part of her schooling, she sighed, hoping she could remember what he said to be able to complete at least some of the problems without looking in the back of the book at the answer key for help.

Vivien strode confidently into the library, her dark brown hair catching the dim light filtering through the tall windows. It was her first time in the Hogwarts library, but she wasn’t one to shy away from new places. Her gaze swept over the rows of towering shelves, the restricted section sign catching her attention briefly before she turned her focus to the occupied tables.

That’s when she spotted the girl by the window, her colorful notebook standing out against the wood desk. Vivien noticed the algebra book in her hands and the furrowed brow that came with frustration. The scene was oddly familiar—she had spent countless afternoons solving problems with her muggle friend Max back in London.

With purpose, Vivien walked over to the girl’s table, her steps firm yet casual. “Hey there,” she greeted with a friendly tone, setting her bag down lightly on the edge of the table. “I couldn’t help but notice you’re working on algebra. Looks like you’re stuck on something.”

She pointed toward the book with a knowing smile. “I’m Vivien. Back home, I used to help my friend Max with this kind of stuff all the time. If you want, I can take a look and help you. I kinda love this problems.”

Vivien leaned slightly on the back of the chair across from the girl and waited on her response.

Angie nearly jumped when the girl with the dark brown hair came over and said "Hey, there" to her. She hadn't been expecting someone to join her, especially as algebra wasn't on the list of Hogwarts textbooks that other students would be working on. The girl, however, seemed to be well-acquainted with them.
“I couldn’t help but notice you’re working on algebra. Looks like you’re stuck on something. I’m Vivien. Back home, I used to help my friend Max with this kind of stuff all the time. If you want, I can take a look and help you. I kinda love these problems.”
Angie relaxed a little at Vivien's tone. She recognized she probably resembled a wild animal caught in a trap because of how twitchy she was in the library. She took a deep breath before responding to the waiting girl.
"Hi, Vivien. My name is Angie. I'm not really stuck on these problems; it's just kinda creepy in the library for me." She pointed to the Restricted Section, "Especially over there....but I didn't really have a better place to study. Most people here don't seem to like algebra."
She looked down at her notebook where she had started solving the problem 3𝑥+2𝑦=14 and x+y=4. Angie had already filled in the first equation with the second one solved for x just as her dad had taught her. It was only a matter of finishing the problem, which had been difficult in her usual study places because of the noise and in the library because of her nerves. She blinked her mismatched eyes at the girl, noting her red Hogwarts robes. Pointing to them, she continued her nervous conversation.
"You're....Gryffindor? That's the one associated with courage, right? I guess that means you might not have as much of a problem as I have in coming here," she chuckled and grimaced a little at her comment. Humor was always a great way to not be afraid of something. She only hoped it would work well enough this time.

Vivien tilted her head slightly. She caught Angie's joke. It was funny how she tried not to worry, but her look gave her away. Vivien paused and followed Angie's look at the Restricted Section. “Yeah, Gryffindor is supposed to be all about courage,” she admitted, resting her arms up into the air. “But I don’t think courage means not being scared at all. It just means doing things even when you’re scared. Honestly, if I were studying alone here, I'd likely be glancing over my shoulder as well.” She glanced at the tall bookshelves surrounding them. The dim lighting created a long shadows between the rows. “It is kind of eerie, I’ll give you that.

Vivien leaned forward slightly, a teasing smile forming. “But hey, at least algebra won’t jump out at you from behind a bookshelf. I wouldn't be shocked if some of these books tried to argue with us about our answers.” She let out a soft laugh. Vivien tapped finger against Angie’s notebook. She noded toward the equation she had been working on. “Speaking of which, let’s get back to this before we start seeing things that aren’t actually there. Numbers are way easier to deal with than ghosts—or whatever’s hiding back there.

She picked up her quill and spun it between her fingers. “And who knows? Perhaps one day, when we're bold enough, we'll discover why that section is kept locked. Within the rules, of course,” she added quickly with a grin. “No breaking into forbidden places just yet, right?

Angie smiled at the girl's comments. It was nice having someone who understood, especially someone who also liked algebra and who was offering to study with her.
“Speaking of which, let’s get back to this before we start seeing things that aren’t actually there. Numbers are way easier to deal with than ghosts—or whatever’s hiding back there,” Vivien said.
Angie chuckled at the idea that suddenly popped into her head of ghosts deciding that they wanted to try doing algebra. She didn't think that even the Ravenclaw ghosts (who reportedly love knowledge) would want to do algebra problems because they do not have as much to do with magic as they're used to.
Vivien picked up a quill, and Angie's eyebrow quirked up as she held a pencil in her hand in case she needed to erase a mistake with her rubber.
“And who knows? Perhaps one day, when we're bold enough, we'll discover why that section is kept locked. Within the rules, of course. No breaking into forbidden places just yet, right?”
Here, Angie smiled again.
"The only forbidden place I would break into would be the forest, and I wouldn't even do that. It's too risky without a professor there to help in case things go sideways. Besides, it's no fun if you get hurt by something just because you weren't prepared or didn't take someone who was prepared with you." Here, she shrugged, turning to the page with the equation on it and filling in more of the solution.
3𝑥+2𝑦=14 and x+y=4.
x=y-4
3(y-4)+2y=14
3y-12+2y=14

"Basically, I'm just using the substitution method for this. My dad is a Muggle algebra teacher, and he says this is usually the best way to solve for diads like these. If you want, I can copy ones I have done already for you to check or something."
Angie bit her lip, hoping that the girl didn't think she was trying to have her leave. She just wanted to make sure she did the work on her own, especially as her dad took so much time during winter break teaching her topics and techniques that she could practice in between magic lessons.

If you do want the examples, as these sometimes can take time to respond to/with
x=5 and y=2x−3

2x−3y=7 and y=3x−7
(these were taken from the website math.libretexts.org so they are not mine directly like the other problem I am working on but are not specifically sponsored or anything like that)
