Defense Against the Dark Arts was one of Eulalia's favorite subjects. One where she, quite frankly, did better than the majority (not to brag). However walking into class that day, Eulalia found it difficult to enjoy the subject when she was there.

Eulalia grit her teeth, eyeing the Hufflepuff girl with a nasty glare as she walked into the room. The two girls had been at each other's throats since the beginning of the school year, always striving to be the best in each of their classes. As time went on, Eulalia discovered that both of them had something to prove, not just to the other, but to their families.

Ira Thornfield got in Eulalia's way. And she didn't like it. Not one bit. How was she supposed to live up to her brother's legacy, to her parent's expectations, when the pesky Hufflepuff couldn't stop being as good or sometimes better than her? Eulalia realized that Ira was a threat. A dangerous one. And for that, the Slytherin could only hate and fear the girl, not that she'd ever admit or show her fear. Eulalia had to be better, no, she needed to be better. Her brother's words from the beginning of the year rang in her ears. "Don't mess up.

So before class began, she stood off to the side with her housemates, shooting Ira more nasty glares now and then as she absentmindedly made small talk with the other snakes in the room.

Throughout her days at Hogwarts, Ira encountered a fair share of walking nuisances. No matter where she turned, there was always someone to rub her the wrong way, and within the classroom's walls, it was none other than the snake, Eulalia Vasilios. The thorn in her freaking side!

Ira may not always be the top student of her class, but she was undoubtedly one of the brightest. Her aim was always on the O's. But whenever she gives it her all for that outstanding grade and still falls short, her fury would reach the boiling point. Especially when the Slytherin girl claims it. Of course, sometimes Ira bested Eulalia in grades too, and whenever she did, she'd mentally pat herself while flashing a smug smile at the other girl. The beginning of their rivalry was a blurred memory, but their constant competition remained as fresh as ever.

Speaking of the devil, Eulalia entered the classroom with a glare burning a path straight to her, which made Ira roll her eyes so hard that she nearly saw the back of her head. No matter how many daggers Eulalia's eyes threw at her, it didn't intimidate her... Okay, but that wasn't a total lie. Ira didn't fear the girl herself but the haunting possibility that she might excel in everything she strives for. To prove her worth... Sometimes to herself, Ira felt the need to outrank the Slytherin every time. At least, that was the thought that made her push forward, and she believes that outshining Eulalia would bring her the sense of fulfilment she yearns for.

And today? It was the day the grades for Defence Against the Dark Arts would be revealed. Ira wasn't scared about not getting an O. She was praying to outscore Eulalia even if it was by the smallest margin. As the professor began passing out the results, Ira felt her heart thudding against her chest.

Eulalia took her seat next to a fellow Slytherin as the Professor entered the room. An anxious feeling bubbled up in her chest as the Professor began to pass out the papers. She waited impatiently, her knee bouncing as a way to relieve her stress.

Eulalia wasn't worried about scoring low. It would be extremely uncharacteristic of her if she did. She was more worried about people outscoring her, and by people she meant Ira.

Her eyes followed the professor as he walked around the room, placing papers face down on the desk in front of the student. Eulalia watched as faces fell, smiled happily, or twisted in relief.

Soon enough, the professor made his way over to Eulalia and her desk partner's area. She watched as her fellow housemate received his score, sighing happily in relief. It was clear he wasn't expecting to do well. After what felt like ages, Eulalia watched as the professor set her paper face down in front of her.

Pausing her bouncing knee, Eulalia snatched the paper off her desk and flipped it over, searching for the score at the top of the page. She grinned happily as she saw her result. Nearly perfect. Her eyes quickly scanned for the single question she missed, nearly cursing when she saw she made a simple mistake. "How could I mess that up?" she thought to herself incredulously.

Eulalia shook off the feeling of failure. She wanted perfection. She didn't want to settle for anything less. Despite her small mistake (she wished that word could've been foreign to her), Eulalia still looked over to Ira with a smug smirk, hoping she'd outscored the Hufflepuff.

Her brain threatened to explode with how the pessimistic thoughts whirled inside her head. Ira knows there was no way she would score anything below E, but that couldn't prevent her from dreading the what-ifs. The image of 'T' in her paper flashed in her mind, and Ira shook the thought away. That would be so humiliating, especially with Eulalia present when she couldn't bear the thought of getting anything lower than what the other girl gets. Ira blew out the breath and pressed her fingers to her temples.

To escape her racing thoughts, Ira watched her peers around her. Few were trying to catch a glimpse of the grade in the papers. Few were murmuring prayers. Few faces were etched with dread, and few were just casual or feigning a casual look as they waited for their papers. As the papers were placed on the table, Ira saw how some faces morphed into relief and others looked like they were going to cry.

The moment her paper was laid down, Ira stared at it while gnawing at her nails. Fearing the worst, she couldn't get herself to reveal the marks; that is, until her benchmate nudged her to do so. Finally, she flipped the paper and her eyes widened with disbelief! Oh Merlin! How did she lose three marks? Ira turned the page hurriedly to check where she made the blunder. Once she caught it, she slapped her forehead at her own oversight before dropping her face on the bench.

At once, her benchmate took it from her grasp and laughed, "Stop making a mountain out of a molehill, Ira. It's just three points!" Ira leaned back and shook her head at the girl beside her, "You don't understand," before snatching the graded paper back. Then her eyes immediately met Eulalia's. Judging by the way her benchmate exclaimed, Ira was certain that the Slytherin would've caught it.

Anticipation welled inside of Eulalia as she gauged Ira's reactions. The Slytherin watched as Ira hesitantly revealed her marks after a nudge from her bench mate before she slapped her forehead and dropped her face to the table.

Now, Eulalia wasn't an expert, but she was pretty positive that that reaction meant Ira was unhappy with her score. Obviously, she missed points. Now, Eulalia was left to wonder how many the Hufflepuff had missed.

She mulled it over in her brain. As long as Ira had missed two or more points on the paper, Eulalia would have her beat. She grinned to herself. She liked those odds. She liked them a lot. But as always, a pit of uncertainty appeared in her stomach. It could've been half a point or even the same as her score.

Luckily, she wasn't stressing for long as she heard Ira's table partner speak up about her complaint. "It's just three points." She caught at the end. Once the words registered in Eulalia's head, a smirk painted on her. She made eye contact with Ira, her smirk only growing more smug. She was in the spotlight, and pesky Ira, was in her shadow.

With that thought in mind, she stood up, her paper in hand, and made her way over to the Hufflepuff and her partner, ready to gloat about her success. "Oh Ira..." she started, faking pity for the girl, "I'm just so sorry to hear about those three marks. It's really such a shame." she spoke, her voice excessively condescending and patronizing, hoping to get under Ira's skin. Eulalia smirked, a fake laugh leaving her lips. "Oh well, you know what they say. Better luck next time."
