Listening to Avery was really fun. It was as if Lyanna and her totally understood each other! Lyanna really hoped to find out learn more about Avery and that they could be good friends in the future. Now, talking about muggles with her was as if she really had a friend to talk to—it was the first time she'd actually been able to tell someone about her life without being started at with wide eyes, laughed at, or, well, practically ditched.

"Yeah...I totally get that. I'm sure you'll go back Swansea sometime, and if you do that I'd totally visit you there—It sounds so cool and peaceful...If you don't mind of course" She blushed, realizing how embarrassing that must have been. Trying to quickly remedy, she was just thinking of a new idea to change the subject, as Avery luckily spoke up commenting on the chocolate Lyanna had just given her. "Oh no problem at all! I'm more than happy to share, if you want another piece feel free to take one," she said smiling.

Then, when she excitedly took the book, Lyanna was quickly and just as excitedly answered: "I'm so glad you you want to! Well, whenever you're done reading it, I'd love to chat about it with you if you want! I mean, actually I really love to read. I guess I am a bookworm. I've gotten so accustomed to the fact that I know hardly anyone else like that, that I just started to automatically say I wasn't either, you know?"

"Oh, I sure hope I'm a Gryffindor or a Hufflepuff like my parents. I mean...Slytherin? Totally the opposite of my personality to be honest. No offense if you're thinking of Slytherin of course, I promise," Lyanna assured her as she answered her question. "And Ravenclaw wouldn't be bad I guess, but I'd still rather Gryffindor or Hufflepuff. What about you?"

"I would love you to come visit me! It would be so much fun!" Avery was excited. She had finally found someone that shared similar interests to her! She couldn't wait to get to Hogwarts, so she would be able to hang out with her friend.

"I completely agree! I barely know anyone that also reads a lot." Avery was glad that she finally had someone to talk to about books. She sometimes felt lonely because she was rarely ever able to talk about her favorite book series.

"You have a Gryffindor parent too? My parents were both in Gryffindor, so I hope to get into that house too. I feel like it's the only house that would suit my personality. At least, that's what my father says. I don't think I even though about joining Ravenclaw or Slytherin. Since my parents were Gryffindors, it's pretty much the only house I really know a lot about."

Avery was finally happy. She had finally found someone to talk to, and someone she could hang out with that was actually interested in the same things as her. She knew that this year was going to be amazing. Especially with her new friend!

❝That's awesome! I've traveled a lot in my life, but never to Swansea. It sounds like such a nice place though, I can't imagine how much I'm missing out by not having visited it!" Lyanna said excitedly. She was really happy to have someone to talk to during the long train ride, and especially glad to already have such an interesting and kind new friend already!

"You're right. It so strange that so many people don't like crawling under a warm blanket on a rainy day with a book and hot chocolate!" She answered smiling. She remembered the time she tried to tell one of her friends about the book she had read and instead of being at least slightly interested, her friend started laughing at her. But what is life without books?

"Oh cool! Gryffindor is a great house. Slytherin, well, let's just leave it at the fact that I really don't want to be one, to be honest. Ravenclaw is alright, but my personality just doesn't really match. I really think Hufflepuff and Gryffindor would suit me best. We might be in the same house actually, now that I think about it! By the way, what subject are you looking forward to studying most?"

Lyanna was really looking forward to starting off her first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Having a new friend, learning new subjects...it seemed almost magical!

Avery smiled. She had always wanted to know someone that had traveled a lot of places. Avery hadn't really traveled anywhere besides back and forth to Wales when she was younger. She hoped to travel more when she was old enough because she really wanted to see the world. "That would be so awesome! Maybe we could visit each other's hometowns someday! That would be so much fun!" Avery was getting even more excited. This train ride was getting better and better!

"I love crawling under a blanket with hot chocolate with a book on rainy days! Of course, living in London, that happened a couple times a week. Though, reading outside is my favorite. Especially in the fresh mountain air!" Avery sighed. She loved spending time outside. Especially at her grandparents house where she felt free.

"I agree! I really hope I get Gryffindor, but Hufflepuff would also be a fun house! Also, that would be awesome if we get in the same house! But, even if we don't get in the same house, we should absolutely hang out! This train ride has been so much fun!" Avery was getting very excited now. She was finally making a friend! Something she hadn't tried doing since her best friend had died a couple years before.

"Oh! I think I'm most excited for Transfiguration. I'm not sure why, but it just sounds really fun! How about you?" Avery asked.

Before Lyanna could reply, the door of their compartment was opened by the trolley witch, who was pushing the lunch trolley. She asked them if they wanted something to eat, but Lyanna already had her own food, so she politely thanked her and declined. After the lady left, Lyanna grabbed a sandwich out of her bag and started eating, before turning back to Av and responding with a smile. "That would be awesome! Cambridge is nice, you should totally come sometime, and I'd love to visit your hometown too! What did you do before you got your letter by the way? Were you homeschooled, did you go to a prep school..?"
Everyone who went to Hogwarts knew what "your letter" meant, and it was a popular topic to talk about, especially for students in their first year; it was the Hogwarts Acceptance Letter of course. Every 11-year old student who was a resident in England, Scotland, Ireland, or Wales when their first instance of magic occurred received one, and it was always a very exciting moment for everyone.

Lyanna nodded when Avery said that it usually rained a couple times a week in London. "I've been to London, it certainly rains a lot there. Me and my grandma used to go when I was little, we would go to the British Museum and to our favorite café. It even snowed once!" She said, thinking back to her childhood. "I love reading outside too! We have a hammock in our garden, which is perfect for reading. And the mountains are also one my favorite places! Another thing I love to do is run through the grass and lay flat on my back, it reminds me of the time me and my family went to Florence. There were fields and fields of yellow sunflowers!" It had been a long time since Lyanna had felt free like she had back then. One thing she had learned was that freedom is almost like a rainbow; amazing while it lasts, but fades away too quickly.

"True, but whatever house the sorting hat chooses, we should totally stay friends and hang out!" Now that Lyanna had a friend, she was having lots of fun during the train ride, and it seemed silly that she had ever been nervous about going to Hogwarts and leaving her home.

Now that the conversation had moved on to the subjects that they were looking forward to most, Lyanna had to think for a moment before answering Avery's question. "Hmm, well, they all sound fun, but I guess I'm looking forward to Charms and DADA most? And certainly also Transfiguration and Potions, and-- well, it's really hard to choose before knowing what the subjects are like in practice! Also, who knows, maybe I'll be dreadful at one of the subjects I'm looking forward to most, I hope not though."

Avery smiled. This was already her favorite birthday. She had finally met a new friend, and she was on the train to Hogwarts! Her dream school! Avery then thought for a moment about Lyanna's question then said, "I was mainly homeschooled since I live in the wizard part of London, though most of the time I just read books about my subjects. What about you?"

Avery's eyes lit up when Lyanna mentioned the British museum. She remembered going there when her family had first moved. She couldn't quite remember what it was like, but she did remember parts of it. Avery was also excited that she wasn't the only one that loved reading outside. Avery closed her eyes as she listened to Lyanna talk about the mountains and running through the grass. It reminded her one her real home. The one she had to leave behind.

"That sounds amazing. I loved running around outside with my cousin at our grandparents house when we lived in Wales. It was one of the only times that I actually felt. . . free."

Avery smiled. Yes. That was the word for it. Free. Free to be herself and not have to worry about accidentally showing her true identity of being the daughter of a wizard and witch. Free to roam the woods and not worry about her parents taking her back to London. Just free.

So Av had been homeschooled. Lyanna knew what that was like, she'd been homeschooled for a while too. Before Isa was born she had traveled a lot, meaning she hadn't really been able to go to one specific school. That was her homeschooling time, reading a lot but mostly experiencing many different cultures and learning lots that way. That was also when Lyanna met Pedro, her Chilean best friend, and learned about all the different wizarding schools.

A few years after Isa was born though, everything changed. The Oak household had to stay in London to earn enough money for both children, to stay comfortable regarding wealth. Although they still had a good amount of money to take breaks and travel during that time, it wasn't enough to always be abroad. At first, with Isa as a baby, there were no problems regarding that, but then she got sick. A lot of money went to St. Mungo's, so that shaped their coming years of life: Jade and Oliver working at the ministry again, Lyanna going to a prep school, Isa mostly staying with Oliver's mother, Lyanna's grandmother.

A lot had changed, but they got used to it.

When Av shook her out of her thoughts by asking what type of schooling she'd had before receiving her Hogwarts Letter, Lyanna was quiet for a moment, pondering what the best answer would be. After a few seconds of silence, she finally spoke. "Well... I traveled lots for the first 5 years of my life. Then we went back to Cambridge, because my little sister was- oh well, that part isn't important. The point is, my parents went back to working at the ministry and I went to a prep school for a few years. Then I had my first instance of magic and everything changed again."

Maybe she said too much, maybe too little. But for now, Lyanna would leave it at that, unless Avery asked further. If she did, the girl would think of a suitable answer again, but for now that was enough. Her new friend then commented on her visits to London and Florence, saying it sounded amazing. Lyanna nodded, smiling. "Same goes for Swansea, I can't wait to visit sometime! That'll be so fun!" She said, hoping to lighten the mood, especially after hearing that being in Swansea with her cousin was the inly time she actually felt free. Hopefully Hogwarts would change that, but also their new friendship.

Avery nodded as she listened to Lya talk about her life. It sounded a lot more fun than Avery's. She at least had a sister to talk to even though Avery had the feeling that something had happened. Though, she didn't want to pry. She knew that Lya would tell her if she was ready. Avery was the same way. She had so many secrets pent up inside her that she wasn't ready to share. Not yet. Not when they constantly reminded her of what she had lost.

She also knew what constant change felt like. Every day something different happened to her. Some days good, but she also had her bad days. Though no matter what she knew that life wouldn't stop and give her a break anytime soon. That's why she always stayed strong and progressed thought the constant pain and suffering she felt.

"I understand the constant change of life. It's almost as if every day is different." Avery voiced her thoughts out loud.

Avery was surprised that those words came out of her mouth. She hadn't expected that. She had always been a closed off book. Unless she trusted someone. Then she would finally open the cover and let loose her true feelings and thoughts. She was really beginning to trust the girl. Avery felt. . . at peace. Like she understood the girl across from her whenever they talked.

❝ She was the sunlight, "
-------------Friendship was a strange word. Too shallow for what it meant, in Lyanna's opinion. Too undefined. For friendship can mean many different things, and one word does not cover the definition if it. In that particular moment, Lyanna felt the unspoken understanding between them. Avery had things she wasn't ready to share yet, Lyanna could tell by her expression, but she understood. She felt the same way. It wasn't as if she didn't trust her new friend, it simply hurt to remember. Some things were complicated.

To avoid any awkward silence, Lyanna rummaged through her bag and pulled out two little toffee-shaped sweets. "Sticky caramels. Would you like one?" she inquired. Whether Avery would take it or not, Lyanna offered a genuine smile. After all, friends were meant to be understanding of what the other wished to hold back for the time being. And when the time did come, more understanding still.

As Avery spoke of understanding the constant change in life, Lyanna could only nod. She knew what it was like only too well. Silence settled between them for a moment. Not the awkward silence that Lyanna would do anything to avoid (by ranting on and making things even more awkward) but a calm bonding. The forging of trust. In that moment, she stole a glance outside at the beautiful sunset. Oh, how she loved the sun. It reminded her of Icarus. Everyone finished the story with the conclusion of Icarus having made the mistake, but in reality who could've resisted the temptation?

Snapping her thoughts back to her surroundings, Lyanna realized that since the sun was setting they must've almost arrived. As if on queue, their arrival in five minutes was announced. Finally at Hogwarts! The excitement and nervousness Lyanna had had when she'd boarded came back, and all she could say was, "Well, I guess it really is happening isn't it?" Foolish words, of course, but even the most curt of people couldn't have found a more suitable moment to speak those words.

As the train pulled to a stop, Lyanna looked at her new friend one last time, a few last words leaving her mouth before she could stop herself. "It was very nice meeting you Avery. I hope to become better friends with you, whichever house you'll soon be placed in and no matter how tight our class schedules will become." After giving her new friend one last kind smile, she waved and departed with her luggage. Lyanna Oak had arrived at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry at last.
" made to shine, burn and bring joy to others. ❞

Avery smiled and gratefully accepted the sticky caramel handed to her. She let the rich flavor and stickiness cling to her. Calming her and reminding her of what she had just made. Even though she wasn’t sure yet that she would be in the same house as her new friend, she knew for certain that this wasn’t even close to the end of their friendship. It was only the beginning.

“Thank you for all this.” Avery said with a bright genuine smile on her face.

Comfortable silence fell between them. It was as if understanding passed between them without words. Avery liked that. Sometimes you just had to voice what you felt in another way that didn’t use words.

Avery heard the sound of the train whistle. It’s sound still ringing in her ears long after it sounded. That whistle is what reminded her of where she was and what was about to happen. Avery sat up straight and nervously fidgeted her fingers. It was time to become who she would be and it was terrifying.

“It really is happening.” Avery whispered barely loud enough for Lyanna to hear.

Avery stood up too. She smiled at her new friend and said, “It was nice meeting you too. I hope everything goes well at the ceremony and that we both get the houses we want. See you soon.” Avery smiled and waved to her new friend before making her way off the train. Ready yet unsure of what was ahead of her.
