Is it necessary for the plot? If not, no. If yes, if they’re outside change up the weather, it can really impact a scene. If they’re inside, bring up something unexpected.

Your first idea is always the worst one! Sometimes you have to scrap the whole thing and completely change the plan for the scene

Hmm, good ideas Ava. I'll have to revisit it at some point in time. It's definitely needed for the plot and wraps up Simon's Christmas while visiting his father, but it seems pretty drab. I'll have to try some of your suggestions!

I was helping Ma clear out her cupboards and I accidentally dropped paint on the carpet. It's gone everywhere

But we got the worst of it off! I just tripped, slid and all of a sudden the carpet was pink with paint.

That's how I felt at first when I wrote Bring On the Men - but I finished it because it added to Em's character, even only slightly. Every solo you start contributes to your character in one way or another! Sometimes it can be a stepping stone into another solo/thread if your character ends up feeling a new thought or seeing a new thing that you (the writer) thinks could be nice to expand on/see again.

Anything can be plot. It's a matter of when and where it goes that makes it relevant and therefore, interesting

I somewhat agree to that for once. Not all Ravenclaws are like that. Only a couple of them.
