Stella had almost been at Hogwarts for a full month, and so far it had been nothing like she'd imagined it would be. In truth, she'd never felt so isolated. She was finding it fairly difficult to make friends, and with her already rocky relationship with her roommate Valkyrja deteoriating further and further each day, Stella found herself retreating into herself more than ever. At least the classes were interesting, and she definitely loved learning how to do magic, but it was disquieting for the young witch to see her peers bonding so closely already while she was unable to make the first step. It was as though she'd missed a window of opportunity for making friends, and now she was stuck on the outside— no one was ever rude to her, per se (save for Valkyrja), but there was a level of kinship other people had with each other that she couldn't seem to reach with anyone.

Even with her siblings at Hogwarts, it was harder than she'd initially thought to track them down and hang out with them the way she could at home, especially with all four of them being in different houses to her. When they did manage to have lunch together or catch up at the Great Lake or the Library, Stella found it difficult to articulate her feelings of loneliness, not wanting to burden them with her petty problems, or even worse, prompt them into writing to their parents about it. It was already bad that she was the baby of the family, she didn't want to act like an actual baby too.

It was likely this inner turmoil, as well as the realisation that it'd been almost a whole month since it began, that made her period of sleep restless that night. After waking up for what felt like the hundredth time that night, Stella checked the time. 6:07am, Monday morning, and still dark outside, but she definitely didn't feel like she could get back to sleep. She glanced over at her sleeping roommates, and as quietly as she could, she pulled on a jumper and a pair of shoes before grabbing the letter she'd written the previous night off her bedside table. It was addressed to her parents, full of lies about how well she was doing and how much she was enjoying Hogwarts, and she supposed now was as good a time to send it, before the school day started and she got busy.

The walk to the owlery did little to lessen the tension in her shoulders, although in all fairness, the distance between the owlery and Gryffindor Tower was not terribly long. Still, when Stella spotted another student on the third platform of the owlery at this early hour, her frown dissipated and was replaced with a smile, her instincts for politeness kicking in. The other girl was facing away from her, looking out the window in between owl nests, but Stella felt it would be somewhat awkward not to acknowledge her presence and give a greeting of some sort. "Oh, hey," she said, her tone friendly and light. She made her way from doorway of the room to an owl nest near the girl, holding her letter in one hand. "Waiting for the sunrise?"

Each night the sky crumbles, in crimson, amber and golden splatter of blood, the sun faltering before the stilness of the night. In a mesmerizing dance, the moon rise from her slumber and try to keep the sky alive, giving every once of light she posess to guide the lost souls wandering at this late hour. But the light she gives isn't her own, only a reflection of the sun's brilliance. The very thing that makes her what she is doesn't belong to her - she only lives through the eyes of those who perceive her. When the sun has regained his vitality, she gently lets him take the lead, and fades away behind his brightness. The sky is reborn - pink, gold and light hues celebrating this birth. The moon linger under the sun's shadow. She still exists, still lingers in the sky, but is no longer perceived. No longer useful. She may guide those lost souls, but its the sun that keeps them alive.

I shine only with the light you give me.

Still, there are rare souls that still seek for the small asteroid in broad daylight, souls that perceives it despite its uselessness. Navy eyes lost in the quiet contemplation of dawn slowly setting over the castle, a raven was resting on a wall, her golden hair cascading down her shoulders, faintly glistening with the morning light. Lost in the tumultous trail of her thoughts, she was absentmindedly stroking an owl's feathers - whiter than snow, it seemed to be asleep. Quiet and stilness surrounded her, as if time itself held its breath to avoid disrupting this peaceful moment. The young girl had awoken early - or perhaps she never slep - and had decided to finally post the small package of letters that awaited her on the nightstand beside her bed. They now rested next to the ethereally ivory owl, waiting to be dispatched.

A soft voice startled her, as the relentless train of her thoughts came to an abrupt stop. Her eyes drifted towards the source of the noise, only to meet the deep brown eyes of a doe gazing at her. Freckles adorning a remarkably beautiful face, she had long, slightly tousled dark hair and a polite smile plastered on her face. It took Elena a few blinks to put on her person suit, and crack a soft smile. "Hi," she replied, getting off the wall. Socialising this early in the morning demanded much more effort than it required throughout the day, but the doe-girl seemed agreable enough to diminish the effect.

As she reached a nearby owl nest, Elena sat next to her new feathered friend - who strangely still managed to sleep despite the sudden agitation. "I was actually supposed to post those," she answered with a smile, pointing at the letters. "But I got distracted by the breathtaking scenery."

"I didn't expect meeting someone this early," she noted, tilting her head slightly. "Early bird or really late night owl ?"

For a moment, Stella was unsure if saying hello had been the right move to make, with the other girl staring blankly at her for a brief moment. Perhaps she'd have been better off slipping past her quietly...? When her greeting was returned, though, Stella's smile would widen, relief flooding through her at the acknowledgement of her existence. It was silly, but the isolation over the last month had left her feeling invisible, and any semi-friendly interaction was very much welcomed by the young lioness. Proof that she wasn't invisible.

The other girl was very pretty, Stella noted to herself, taking in her long blonde hair and delicate features. She seemed about her age, maybe she was a first year too? Stella briefly wondered if she'd seen her in any of her classes, trying to sort through the dizzying blur of her many classmates' faces in her mind to identify whether or not they'd met already. Probably not, she decided— she usually kept to herself, so it was safe to assume that this girl was a stranger.

As the blonde spoke, Stella felt a strange sense of kinship towards her, feeling as though she was seeing another version of herself in the way she spoke and those contemplative blue eyes. As if their shared presence in the owlery in the early hours of the morning was already knitting them together somehow. She banished the thought almost as soon as it entered her head, reminding herself that she was probably just being prematurely hopeful for a friendship because she didn't have any others. Still, within literally twenty seconds of interacting with this girl, Stella already knew she really, really wanted to be friends with this girl.

"Early bird or really late night owl?"

Stella thought about it for a brief moment, thankful for the invitation to keep the conversation going. "A little bit of both," she replied, "I couldn't really sleep, so I decided to send my letter instead. It's to my parents." Slightly nervous at not wanting to mess up a chance at friendship, the lioness tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear self-consciously. "I'm Stella, by the way. Are you in your first year too?"

The barely noticeable relaxation of the girl's shoulders pushed Elena to shift further the expression of her features towards a welcoming air, found in the way the corner of her eyes slightly lifted or in the gentle curve of her rose lips. The brown haired girl seemed longing for any kind of friendly interaction, and Elena was never one to deny one's desires. She leaned her back on the wall, the ivy-covered stones offering a soft rest from the ever lasting tension lingering in her limbs, and did her best to appear friendlier - as much as she physically could, given the early hour of the day. She could feel the girl's eagerness, one that once matched her own. A desperate longing for connection, for something meaningful.

The young raven had luckily found that part of her soul in a unblinking, pearl-covered doll whose wings seemed clapped behind her back. Nonetheless, she knew how lonely it might feel, especially when your own heart perceive everything so deeply. Every emotion, every sensation is an ever growing wave on the verge of crashing down, one the young girl spent years and years trying to push back. In vain, most of the time. If only her own feelings were in the balance, then without a doubt she wouldn't have any difficulties welcoming it. But that wave is fuelled by not only hers, but every soul she meets. She takes a piece of them, wherever she goes - with persons like Alyss, only light and laughter gets woven into this whirlwind of emotions. Yet not everyone is a sheer sun ray of happiness, and more often than not she finds herself absorbing their fears, doubt, anger. Concealing it deep within herself, trying to mend them by sharing their burdens. A weight that quickly becomes too heavy for her frail shoulders.

The hope shimmering within the girl's eyes reminded her of her own, each time she met someone she deeply wished to get to know better. If she wasn't mistaken on the origin and nature of this glimmer in her doe eyes, then Elena felt flattered her person had sparked someone's interest, especially such a 'stepped-out-of-a-fairytale' someone.

She slightly nodded at the girl's answer, finding the irony amusing. "I'd say the same," she added with a slight smile, one this mysterious girl might have trouble figuring out. For Elena could not be classified as any of those terms, for the very simple reason that, if she manages to find the entry of Morpheus's realm, does it very late, and leaves it quite early. Her night usually starts around 4am and ends around 6am. That is, again, if she sleeps at all. The girl's next sentence piqued her interest, as her gaze shifted to the letter between her hands. "Me too," she nodded towards the pile of letters awaiting. Her mother and father had very distinct taste in writing and commenting on her daily life, so she usually sent two different letters. If her mother was more interested in her relationships and hobbies, her father was the one with which she could discuss intellectual matters, or talk about her new interests.

"Stella," she mused. "It's Latin, did you know ? Means 'star'." Which she found quite fitting. "Elena," she continued, getting up and extending a hand. "Pleased to make your acquaintance, Stella." Her next question took her by surprise, and she nodded in response. Small talk was never really her strength, and the next question was difficult to find. "Indeed. How do you find Hogwarts so far ?"

The observation of Stella's name was met with wide brown eyes, then a tentative smile a short moment later—the delay not born of judgement, but rather mild astonishment at the ease with which the other girl pulled meaning from something so simple. Most people used first names without a second thought, and here was someone who paused to consider them. It touched her as much as it had surprised her, a steady glow unfolding inside of her with the comfort of something long-missed. "Oh," Stella said, finding her voice with a nod of acknowledgement, "Italian too, actually—in my case, I mean. My family's from Italy." She flashed a quick, shy smile in the blonde's direction, before adding, "Same meaning though."

She shook the girl's outstretched hand when it was offered, her grip light but earnest, letting the warm simplicity of her introduction wash over her. Elena. A radiant name for a radiant girl, as lovely as the silver moon rising clear over the hills.

"Pleased to make your acquaintance, Stella," said Elena.

"And I, you," Stella responded, her voice open and genuine, tinged with an undercurrent of quiet fascination she hadn't expected to feel. She couldn't help but linger on the other girl's calm composure, the way her presence didn't demand attention but seemed to draw it regardless—effortlessness Stella could never hope to emulate. And yet, she could feel an uncanny resonance to it, to Elena's deliberate thoughtfulness behind every gesture, marked by sleepness nights and softly spoken words; her experience seemed to mirror part of Stella's own, though it wasn't until she'd stepped into the halls of Hogwarts that the shadow of self-consciousness began to cling to her like moss to cobblestone. Back home, she'd moved through life with ease, self-assured in her worth and untroubled by perception... now all of that lay in shards at her feet, her rosy optimism rearranged into painfully keen self-awareness. Seeing a kindred carefulness reflected in Elena, although unaware of the blonde's reasons for it, brought Stella a calming sense of understanding. A small balm for the weight she now carried.

There it was again, the flicker of childish hope for friendship she'd felt earlier. She was finding it increasingly difficult to quash it, despite the fact that they'd only exchanged a few words so far. Something about Elena's measured attentiveness had a soothing effect on Stella; in fact, she was visibly growing more comfortable in the raven's company, posture softening with an ease she hadn't carried since the early days of the school term.

No, there was no denying the hope budding between her ribs, that Elena might become a friend with whom she could build a genuine connection without pretense or performance. Someone to share secrets and sweets with—someone who would make long, wakeful nights and mean roommates a little more bearable. Wondering which small detail she might ask about next to keep the conversation flowing, Stella let her gaze drift out past the railing to the sunrise momentarily before drawing it back to Elena with a shy curiosity as she was met with a question from the blonde herself.

"How do you find Hogwarts so far?"

Stella felt the familiar twist of discomfort coil in her stomach again, but the lie was already forming itself in her mouth before her mind had a chance to protest, spilling out like ink from a cracked quill. "Alright, I suppose," she replied, eyes shifting past Elena to rest on the wall slightly to the left of her head. Trying to keep her tone casual and dismissive even as something in the depths of her expression shut off, a curtain drawing itself closed without her conscious permission.

She opened her mouth to continue, but her throat tightened as if some unseen moral force had taken hold of it, refusing to let the falsehood pass. She had intended to speak lightly, to smooth over the truth with a casual response, but for some reason she couldn't bring herself to lie completely to this girl—not with the sincerity in Elena's eyes, not when her mere presence had already made Stella feel so seen. "It's not exactly what I thought it'd be," she said after a beat, voice dropping just low enough to feel like a confession. Her eyes flicked toward Elena for an instant, then very quickly away again, as if trying to detect and ward off any potential judgement before it could strike. "Hardly at all, really," she added, unable to keep the emotional weight of her loneliness from sticking in her voice. Too raw of a feeling in her chest to continue pulling the truth forward, so she fell silent instead, dimly aware of her head hurting and the dull ache behind her eyes from a night of tossing and turning. Outside, the light of a new morning was growing stronger, but for Stella, it felt less like a renewal than an unwanted reminder heavy with obligation: that she had to rise, to perform, to endure rather than embrace yet another day.

Italy. The golden haired had visited the sunlight country before, walked amongst the cobbled streets, ate freshly picked fruits and swam in the deep blue sea. A peaceful summer, one she dearly missed. If the roots from her mother's side spread towards the city of love, her father had always had a particular affection for this other mediterranean country, and the raven often found herself having to chose the family's destination for the following vacations - a highly important choice, which often resulted from hours of debating the arguments each side brought to the table. "Really ?" She smiled fondly, tucking a honey strand behind her shoulder. "It is truly a magnificent country."

Beneath the brunette's gentle smile seemed to squirm something deeper, darker. The delicate shades of pink emanating from her person turned into hues of plum, the edges burning. A weight seemed to rest on her shoulders, one she appeared to face alone. Though it felt difficult to tear down her facade, as each time she attempted at stepping closer her smile only shone brighter, masking the cracks running along her face. A star. Elena was a firm believer names had more power than the world would let on, that each revealed, in its time, its meaning. Her own was fitting, as its meaning hoovered around sun rays, shining light and moon. A daughter of both astres, an eclipse. The girl facing her evolved in the same endless void as her, the one mortals call space. A star, destined to shine the brightest at its collapsing. Yet it had its own source of light, whereas she was the mere reflection of someone else's. So similar, and yet so different, pure self-luminous celestial body of gas and gigantic rock orbiting around a planet, mimicking the surrounding lights.

Though, doesn't that mean the moon sees the star ?

Each hint showing the little celestial being relaxed slightly more felt like a small victory - shoulders loosing their tension, eyebrows softening. A smile curving the edge of her lips. A spark lit up in the blonde's chest, as always when someone showed flecks of affection towards her love-starved person.

A frown creased her forehead as Stella uttered complete lies right at her face. Head tilting slightly, she remained silent, waiting for the truth to spill out. "It's not exactly what I thought it'd be." There it was, she thought, eyes softening. Her voice had become hoarse, as if fighting tears that threatened to spill at any second, and the sight made the raven's heart clenched. Not wanting to force a confession, she remained still, still smiling softly. "Stars are surrounded by light-years of void," she said, letting a second float before continuing, "It can grow lonely."

The castle's walls often feel freezing to one's heart who has not found their warmth yet. This soul was a wandering star, straying from the course of her life. A supernova waiting to happen.
