Too Short To Reach Open Finished

Elzabeth had heard countless times how amazing the Hogwarts library was, but even then nothing prepared her for the sight of the towering shelves with rows upon rows of books.

She walked in, taking slow steps as she looked up and down in amazement. She had always loved books, ever since she was a little girl who had just learned to read she always seemed to find time to read the newest fantasy books.

This time though, she was here for some information. For being a half-blood Elzabeth was surprisingly uneducated when it came to the magical side of her life, she had lived in a muggle town and had a muggle education all up until the day she had received her letter. Her father was the one to explain to her what it all meant, why these strange accidents kept happening to her when she got a little over-emotional.

She didn't blame her father for not telling her everything from the beginning, it made sense he would want to wait to make sure she was a witch before telling her everything about the magical world, just in case. But that also meant she had some grey area when it came to wizarding history and she wanted nothing more than to fill some of that in.

So here she was, ready to do some research so she didn't come off as a complete idiot when other people talked to her.

She figured the best place to look would be in the nonfiction area, so she made her way over, taking in everything as much as she could.

When she had finally got to the section her eyes roamed over the many titles, landing on one that jumped out to her.

"The first Wizarding War."

She was confused, how could there have been a war without any muggles knowing? Elzabeth pushed her curiosity back and reached up her arms, trying to grab the book. Unfortunatelytuantly it seemed Elzabeth was a little short, her fingers not even brushing the leather spine.

"Ugh! Stupid short legs! Just a little more, come on!" Elzabeth muttered to herself, stretching as much as she physically could before being in pain.

"Dang it!" She grunted, letting out a huff as she gave up to reevaluate the best way to reach it.

"Need a little help there? There are things called ladders, you know."
Elzabeth turned around, locking eyes with a Hufflepuff girl. It didn't look like this girl had any real intentions of helping her but Elzabeth didn't want to judge too fast.

The ladder comment made her cheeks heat up so she turned away, trying to hide her face in her hair. Elzabeth hated that she blushed so easily, a trait she had gotten from her Irish side of the family.

"I almost have it, getting a ladder would be a bit much if I were to just take a step." She shrugged, stepping back from the shelve. Elzabeth hadn't thought of the ladder embarrassingly enough but she wasn't about to admit that to someone, especially since it was such a simple answer.

Elzabeth looked at the girl again once she was sure her cheeks and resumed their normal color. When she did though she didn't fail to notice their height differences.

"Would you mind grabbing it? You look taller than me, it would be quicker than a ladder." She suggested, looking up at the book and back at the girl. Hopefully, she would say yes, judging the way the girl was looking at Elzabeth though, it seemed that might not be the case.

Elzabeth frowned at the girl's words, it would be so easy for her to reach out and grab the book and yet? The Hufflepuff didn't even try, she just looked down at Elzabeth with a sly smile on her face.
"I've been having some peculiar back pains. What's in it for me if I get this book down for you?"
If there was one thing that Elzabeth disliked, it was someone who expected something back everytime they did something for a person. She knew many girls in her school before Hogwarts who would refuse to do anything without the other person scratching their back. If everyone in the world had that type of mindset, nothing would ever get done.

"Well, if you want me to give you something in return for asking you to simply reach up and get a book, I'm afraid I'll have to go find one of those ladders you mentioned before." Elzabeth wanted to seem brave and put her foot down but her voice betrayed her, shaking at the very end.

This girl scared her, she looked older and there was no doubt she had the physical advantage but Elzabeth didn't want to seem so easily pushed aside.

"I would have loved to do something for you if you had just asked nicely instead of trying to corner me." She spoke, crossing her arms. Her cheeks started to heat up again, but this time Elzabeth wasn't going to look away.

Elzabeth could tell when someone was planning something and it was quite obvious that girl was just by the way she was looking at her. There was one girl in her school that seemed to come to mind when thinking about the Hufflepuff, Elzabeth had managed to try and stay away from her but there were a few unlucky people at the end of the day that would go home crying. Just the thought of it made Elzabeth frown.
"The ladders are out that way, I think. Aren't Ravenclaws supposed to be smart? Maybe they made an exception for you,"
The words struck a chord, Elzabeths mouth falling slightly open. She had often thought the same thing, maybe she didn't belong in Ravenclaw. Her grades in school before Hogwarts were average at best, and she sometimes would act without thinking, all things you won't really expect out of a Ravenclaw.

Before Elzabeth could say anything, the tall Hufflepuff reached up and picked the book off of the shelf, tucking it under her arm.
"Now, for what I came for, A bit of light reading about a very interesting war."
The girl started to walk away with Elzabeths book in hand, intentionally making sure Elzabeth knew she was just doing this to spite her.

"W-wait! That's my book!" Elzabeth started to walk forwards, her eyebrows furrowed in anger.
"I hope you don't mind."
"I do mind, I very much so mind. Why are you boing a horrible person? What did I do to you?" Elzabeth asked. She wanted to bother this girl as much as she had bothered her.

After everything that had just happened, the answer was so simple. Elzabeth was ready to be done with this girl so she agreed to turn in her things if it meant she got her book and some much needed quiet time after this whole ordeal.

"Have fun." She yawned, leaving the library. Elzabeth was so fed up she had no more words left to say to the Hufflepuff. After a few minutes and a string of cuss words, Elzabeth had calmed down just enough to realize she had made enemies with a girl she didn't even know the name of.

"Bloody Idiot, so much for having a smooth year, she's going to come back and bite me in the arse." Elzabeth muttered to herself, gathering the book and all of the things she needed to return.

There was a moment where she debated leaving that girls stuff here and not bothering with it but that would have left a mess for the Librarian to clean up and that just wasn't right.

"I pray for the people who have to bunk with her." And with that Elzabeth went to take care of everything she needed to before settling down at one of the tables, opening the book she finally had the chance to read.
