Adventure Time 2.0

Sandy loved adventures. Everything, if you looked at it the right way, was an adventure. Back at her house, somewhere not in whatever this magic-castle-school-land-thing, that was about all she'd do. Danny, her and his friends would always go on bike rides, find new places to explore in the bleak and dreary spot they lived in. Danny would always bring a ball of sorts in his bag, and whether it was used or not, it'd be around them at all times.

She really admired him for that. Always being consistent with his items. Now, she totally had the same problem. Obviously she didn't misplace literally everything she owned. Totally. But none of that was the point.

The point was that she loved just being outside. She loved being away from the kids near the park by her house, and she loved all of Danny's friends. For once in her life, she felt included in whatever ridiculous things they were doing, like skipping rocks in a sad body of water and compete between them all to get the most skips - and not to brag, but she'd always get the highest. Well, aside from Danny. He always managed to have a better arm than she did, but she was still better than him at running!

Without that companionship, missing the short black hair of her boyfriend and the fiery red hair of his best friend, the rattling of old bikes and shouted directions over giggles and meaningless commentary, Sandy didn't really have a reason to adventure. Everything was so scary. Ghosts, boys, the sheer amount of levels in the castle. If she wasn't such a levelheaded girl, she would've been almost overwhelmed by all of it!

(The girl deftly ignored the fact that she almost started sobbing her first night at the school cause she was so overwhelmed. No matter getting her glasses back finally, she was still blind to her own actions.)

Still, she was kept in motion with the spirit of herself. Adventuring, wandering around - Those things weren't only limited to when she was with her group. Her life didn't need to revolve around other people, and they especially didn't need to hinder her ability to enjoy herself. She learnt this early on, finding her way around the school as best she could, picking up on the quieter spaces and spots she should avoid if she didn't want to be brutally assaulted fear-wise by a bunch of weird ghosts. Yeah, it was a whole thing. Steering clear of some areas definitely lessened that from happening. And thus, with nothing but a prayer, some mild hope, and an empty stomach, Sandy decided to test her luck with adventuring.

It was a bad decision.

One thing about her that she'd never admit to anyone: She was terribly afraid of the dark. To her family, she would always claim that the clumsily scattered fairy lights were for decorations, the prime aesthetic. They were not. In fact, Sandy really struggled with sleeping if there wasn't lights on. No matter how much she searched on Google, asked any being above for an answer, she had no idea why she was so scared of it. The idea of something just being there though, hiding in the dark, lurking... Even thinking about it gave her chills.

Even if she had never gotten a clear answer, the young Gryffindor was about 98% sure it had something to do with spiders. Before she could even remember being afraid of the dark, she was afraid of spiders. They were just so weird! Long legs, webs, freaky little teeth-fang-things, why WOULDN'T she find them creepy? It was even worse in the dark! She could never be certain that there wouldn't be a horde of spiders just waiting for her, timing the perfect moment to strike and rain all hell over her.

...

Now, Sandy was already well aware by now that she did not make good decisions. Sandy was also aware that walking into a dark, creepy abandoned bathroom that looked and smelled like shit was not a good decision. Alas, her mind was already set. She would be exploring this disgusting place whether it was the last thing she did.

Horrible decision. Terrible, terrible decision.

Within a few minutes of entering the bathroom, the paranoia set in. It wasn't entirely dark, but perhaps it would've been better without any light at all. Long shadows stretched against the lavatory, and as Sandy pushed on through her own fear, a faint tingle continuously fumbled down her spine. Aside from being dim, it was also disgusting. Really, it was a wonder that this place was even open for people to enter. Just being in it felt like a public hazard, like she needed those bright yellow hazmat suits to breathe the air in. Maybe magic people were immune? She'd have to look into that.

About then, the clock striking a damning late time that she didn't quite know given her lack of time-containing items, was when she felt it. Having rested her hand against one of the sink surfaces, glancing away for a mere moment, a tingle shot up her arm. There was something on her. Oh dear God, there was SOMETHING on HER.

From outside the bathroom, her loud scream of terror could be heard. Straight out of a horror movie.

Had Elena known a larger variety of insults, they surely would have served her well tonight. But context must be provided first.

As oh, surprisingly usual, the young raven couldn't sleep. To her great delight, however, this wasn't the type of insomnia from which she will be ending drowned in sweat, breathing shakily and unable to make a single move due to night terrors. She simply couldn't sleep. After a few hours of tossing and turning inside her sheets, heavy sighs escaping her from time to time, the young girl gave up on reaching Morpheus's gates. She rose from the safe comfort of her bed, threw a fluffy robe on and slipped her freezing feet inside her slippers.

Wandering about throughout Hogwart's corridors had become a very bad habits Elena had nurtured over countless sleepless nights. She had luckily never been caught - other from a certain night with a certain lion (@sanguinius demarest). A bitter aftertaste remained from that encounter, and she tried to pull her thoughts away from it. Taking a second to think about directions, she settled for the second floor - an area she had yet to visit. Squinting her eyes, as using a wand would directly poiting a giant arrow towards her position to any still awake teacher, she used the moon's glow to guide her steps. This strange silver light casted shadows on the floor, forming strange shapes and shadows.

She wasn't afraid of the dark. Never had been.

Was she was terrified afraid of was instead confusing reality with her mind's byproducts. She was utterly petrified of turning around and face that damn stagman, terrified of slowly reaching the borders of sanity. But the dark wasn't the problem - after all, what is darkness but the absence of light ? Not doing a really good job at convincing herself, she took hesitant steps inside the corridor. There was a very clear reason she had yet to venture down those halls - as they held places said to be abandoned. Again, she wasn't scared of ghost or anything. But the heavy atmosphere made her uneasy.

A soft, fainted rattle, like footsteps, made her stop her pace. Slowly clutching her pale fingers around the soft and comforting form of her wand, she took small, measured steps towards the sound. A bird ? An animal ? Something else ? Whatever it is, Elena was only two steps away from finding o-

SCREAM.

"JESUS-" The scream tore her throat before she was able to stop it, mirroring the terrifying one that had just echoed throughout the hallways. Swallowing the tremendous amount of insults threatening to slip past her lips, she took three rapid steps and faced the author of her heart attack with the tip of her wand. Or so she thought. The disturber was actually a girl, who stood far in the bathroom, and looking panicked. Which was undermining to describe the girl's state.

Heart pounding, she lowered her wand, breathing erratic. "Are you mad ?" Her tone was astonished, and held a hint of the fear she had just felt. "Do you even realise - .....How - ..What are you even doing here ?" Had a teacher wandered in the corridors she was crossing, he or she would have witnessed a strange sight. Two girls, with similar looks, both in pyjamas, staring at each other.

What a strange night.

It was moments before the intrude, arm flapping violently in a desperate attempt to get the spider off. Just a few seconds ago, she had felt it, the tingle of something against her skin that was now foreign and missing. Occasionally, a phantom sensation swiped up the same arm, sending her through another ring of panic as she forced herself away from the spot she had been before. Her breathing was erratic, eyes attempting to depict where the terrifying beast that had attacked her was now, only coming up with shadows and blurry images.

Sandy breathed a hefty sigh to herself, scratching at the spider-touched spot with a reckless abandon, leaving a sting against her skin when she finally dropped her hand. No longer was there a spider, no longer was she held in the firm web of mind tricks and induced paranoia.

That was a lie.

In scenarios like this, there was always someone there for her. Her mother, Frazier, Danny - Anyone. She had never dealt with such a fear alone before, had never felt that damning pressure against her lungs as she heaved for air she couldn't keep down. Faint tears brimmed her eyes, hand clutching at the bottom of her shirt, nails pressed through fabric against the rough of her palm. How was she meant to know that the spider was gone? Returned outside, killed, relocated in some shape or form? There was no certainty, nothing proving that the spider wouldn't be hanging from a web right beside her face, waiting for her to turn.

Never quite giving her time time to question that thought, the intrude of another roughly dragged her from the train tracks her brain had gotten stuck on. In the terrible lighting and even worse sight of Sandy without her glasses, this stranger seemed more of a savior than whatever stupid fantasy books she had read prior. Hardly something of a knight in shining armor, instead displayed in something for sleep (or what she assumed they wore to sleep), Sandy wasn't quite sure what to make of it.

So she didn't think about it. Instead, she deftly ignored the berating, stumbling with a frantic pace to grasp her savior's shoulders, "There- Spider. There was a spider- Oh god, it was on me. It-" Her words stopped there, choked up by her throat from the borderline of tears, arms shifting to wrap around the girl without more than a tossed out thought of her own strength. Surely it wasn't a problem.

"I was bored- I always enjoyed looking around at new places but then there was that spider and it was just here and- I don't know where it is, I-I was freaking out and now it's somewhere in here and I couldn't leave because it could've been by the door. It- You understand right? It's scary, right? I'm not overreacting?" Sandy spoke quickly, albeit muffled by how close her face was against the blonde. Obviously she wasn't overreacting. This was a very normal, average thing for someone her age to do. Being scared of things was normal, especially freaky eight legged bug-things that had no care for who they stepped on. The thought made her shudder.

From here on out, Sandy was never going adventuring without someone else. Especially not while without her glasses, rendering her basically incapable of seeing anything. How would she be able to see a spider if she couldn't even see the details of someone right beside her without her glasses?

Her heart still racing, the young raven took a few steps inside the room, squinting to try and make out the shapes of this darkly lit area. A bathroom, she soon realised. She must be standing in the infamous abandoned toilets of the second floor. These halls were unbeknownst to her, yet she had heard all sorts of rumors spreading across the corridors like spiders webs, infecting their mind with fear.

Probably not the best analogy , she thought with an amused smile, as she ran her gaze over the girl facing her.

The hint of a smile that had started to spread given the rush of adrenaline she had just experienced quickly worn out when she noticed how panicked the other girl looked. A phobia is acting out somewhere. She looked absolutely terrified, with tear-stained cheeks and a runny nose - yet Elena noted the simple and fierce beauty of the girl. A strong and youthful wind coming from the south, playing with a galloping horse, tousling the hair of the rider and going back high up in the sky where a ever-so-strong sun shone brightly. Blinking this vivid image away, Elena focused on calming the hurricane that threatened to form.

Focusing on her senses and on what she was feeling at the moment, she visualised calming scenes - the rain tipping down a flower, the sea slowly invading a beach. Relaxing her entire body, she then tried to externalise her feelings, projecting them onto the girl. The whole process was more placebo than anything else but she liked to think it still helped to ease the mind of those she was trying to calm down. If she was the very image of comfort and peacefulness, then she hoped the atmosphere would lighten and allow them to unload their emotions on her shoulder.

Doing it with a complete stranger was unusual though, as Elena didn't have the necessary time to assess the best course of action. Purely based on instinct, she slightly reached out towards the girl. To her great surprise, she had already initiated contact and had wrapped her arms around the raven's waist. Frozen for a millisecond (the time for her to internally scream at this unexpected contact), she then hugged the girl back, half a smile peaking at the corner of her mouth. Being instantly trusted and looked up to for comfort sufficed to make her heart melt - and the adorable way the girl had thrown herself at her only aggravated her case.

Trying to make sense of the girl's words, as she was spitting them out with no care for an actual meaning, she understood this whole terror was caused by a spider. Brushing the girl's hair in an attempt to soothe her, she gazed around for the author of the crime. Sadly for the young lady sobbing on her shoulders, spiders tend to thrive on this kind of place.

The long tirade of the girl came to a halt with two questions, her doe eyes pleading for reassurance. Adorable. Biting her lower lip to suppress a smile, she vigorously shook her head. "Of course not." She affirmed, smiling at her. "Anyone would have reacted the same way." It was only a half lie, as Elena surely would have screamed if something had brushed her skin in almost complete darkness.

Gently breaking free from the hug, she put her hands on the girl's shoulders and gazed at her. "Here's what we're going to do." Her finger wrapped around a familiar stick, which she pulled out from her pocket. "I'm going to light a candle and look around for the culprit. You stay behind me. If you see something, you tell me, and I'll kill it. Sounds good ?"

At that very moment Elena wished her appearance matched the determination she plastered on her face, as a golden haired girl in a white set adorned with little teddy bears wasn't exactly the pinpoint of a hero.

A small sigh escaped her at the returned contact, melting further against the girl. It wasn't exactly often that someone reciprocated things like this, maybe her mother, but not many others. Should it be concerning that her boyfriend didn't hug her either? Nah, that was just Danny. He was... Odd. But he knew how to take care of spiders, he just didn't care for stuff like that, not in the way she did. Everyone had their strengths and weaknesses, and his just didn't quite line up with hers, which meant they had a good chance of tackling eachothers problems. Easy!

Soothing her own overactive mind, Sandy tried to redirect her attention, mind focused on the other girl fiddling with her hair rather than the obnoxious decisions she was making. It was awfully nice, even if she didn't actually know... Whoever this was. Maybe she was too desperate for contact, but after the reaffirming words and being unwillingly nudged away, she couldn't help but be disappointed.

More so, though, was she terrified. For more reasons than one, she knew she wouldn't be much service to whatever this investigation was, and that feeling of uselessness drove her halfway up the wall. If she couldn't even handle being brave for just a second, how was she supposed to do it at all? Especially in such a stupid scenario like being scared of a damn insect.

(In her mind, she knew her aunt Diane would've scolded her for such a gross oversimplification of what a spider was. "Arachnids aren't insects, blah blah blah." They're both small, both horrible, so why should they be any different? Sandy found it to be stupid.)

Still, she couldn't just say no to the offer. This stranger was being so nice to her, something she had hardly experienced before without a genuine connection. It would be downright rude to disregard all of her effort, even if it was a bit useless. There was hardly any worth in helping her, any worth in having to save her from something she decided to do herself. Maybe it was self-destructive to think that way, imagining the deepened frown on Frazier's face, but she really couldn't see any reason why this person should have to take time out of their day just for her.

Sandy's silence broke a second after, tears brimming her eyes once more as a wobbly smile fumbled onto her face, "You're being too nice to me. I-I can't see it anyways. This, um, some guy broke my glasses and now I'm... I can't see anything. Well, anything close to me... So, uh, anything in this bathroom. It- Even you. You just look like some- Weird blob. Not that you look weird! You just..."

Suddenly, she cut herself off, palms rubbing at her eyes as she pondered just how she managed to make herself seem that stupid in under a minute. This whole failing at communication thing really seemed like some reoccurring pattern, something to make her mess up each and every time. She was good at socializing! What was it that made her so horrible at communication around other girls? It was really ridiculous. All she could sum it up to was something like exposure therapy, like having to encounter the same problem with girls all the time to work her socializing back up. She never really had friends who were girls, and she knew that they were more... Delicate? Maybe that was it?

But they weren't delicate. Sandy was a girl, Auntie was a girl, aunt Brit was a girl, her moms were both girls, obviously. She knew how capable they were, so why was she so nervous? It was odd. Very, very odd.

She dropped her hands, tiredly moving to cling around the stranger's free hand, clasped as tightly as she could manage without looking too scared, "I must seem like a wuss, huh? Having to be rescued? Read a lot of fantasy, but... Like, I totally didn't expect this of all things to be my reason for a silly knight in shining armor to appear... Fraz would find this so funny."

Strong, independent woman right here. Beyonce would be so proud.

The shivering girl in front of her reminded Elena of a stumbling pup, taking a few steps before miserably crumbling to the ground, its long ears getting tangled with its soft paws. Her blue eyes were veiled by a overwhelming amount of tears, her mouth pouting and her chin trembling. Freaking adorable. Blame the raven for adoring cute things. Stray dogs and half bitten cats always drew her to try and rescue them, or at least soften their fate.

Mending broken things had become a whole life purpose, carefully picking the pieces that had shattered, sometimes hurting herself on their sharp ends, before returning it to its former glory. Love could fix anything, if one was willing to sustain it for long enough without being drained dry. Luckily for every person that relied on her, it took very little to refill Elena's heart. A soft smile, a kind word, an unexpected hug. All sorts of things that made her insides flutter, and that rekindled the desire to pour it on anyone that might need it.

Words stumbled out of the girl's mouth, as if she tried to hold them for too long before they all forcely broke out. The end of her tirade caused a light chuckle to escape the golden haired girl, as she was being compared to a "weird blob". Patting the girl's head, she smiled. "Dry your tears," she replied affectionately. "You're good." Readjusting her clothing, she kept a hand on the girl's shoulder before stepping a few steps aside. "What did you say about your glasses ?" She suddenly turned around, frowning as she processed the girl's words. "Someone broke them ?"

She hoped for their dear life it was accidental. But who would intentionally shatter something so important to such a young girl ? They were only eleven, after all. But Elena knew far too well children could be horribly rude and mean - hundreds of voices laughing, fingers pointing at her, shoulders shoving her against a wall. Blinking those thoughts away, she focused on the present situation. And the task at hand. Keeping her hand on the girl's shoulder to make sure she didn't panic, as she stated she couldn't see much, she slowly turned around and grabbed the candle she had previously settled on the ground.

Cracking a match, she drew the flicking fire closer to the candle. The hungry flame licked the edge of her fingers, and she quickly let it fall on the ground, stomping it lightly. The sudden bright light blinded her, and she quickly turned her head away as a soft grunt escaped her mouth. The other girl grasped her hand, and Elena carefully took a few steps forwards, analyzing the ceiling, looking out for anything out of the ordinary. Her heart skipped a few beats when she saw a huge shadow looming over them, but it was simply the girls's shadow following them closely.

"A knight in shining armour ?" She cracked a laugh, glancing at her new companion. "Why thank you." She hardly expected anyone to compare her silly pajamas to a full pleated armour, but she still accepted the compliment. "And you're not being a coward or an idiot, anyone would have freaked out, venturing alone in the dark like that. Especially since you're half blind without your glasses, it was actually very brave of you."

If Sandy wasn't already on the verge of sobbing from sheer terror, this girl would certainly be the downfall. Everything was already so unfamiliar, bordering on inconsistent if not for the constant fact that she would just zone out to disregard how horrible she felt over the constant emotional changes. And yet here this person was, consistent and reactive and just sweet enough to remind her of home. Her bottom lip threatened a pitiful wobble, if not for the teeth that dug into the inside of it, souring her mouth with the faint metallic taste of slowly seeping blood.

Glasses. On a technicality, they weren't... As broken? As they could be? Cracked, yes, but she could still faintly see through them if she tried her hardest. It really wasn't a big deal, hardly something to worry about, but to her the inconvenience of seeing the cracks of her lenses against the already damaged frame reminded her too much of the guilt she felt.

"...They're only a bit broken. I-It wasn't his fault, I..." Sandy rolled the words around on her tongue, shameful, "It was my fault. I punched him first, I-I was just overreacting and didn't think. He was in the right. It's horrible, and I feel... Guilty about it, but I can't change anything. That- That's a lot of the reason why I didn't want to get them fixed, because I felt I didn't deserve it. Y'know? Like when you break a toy and don't ask to get a new one cause it was your fault? It's just a silly thing, not a big deal."

She's silent for a few moments after, disregarding the rest of the girl's words. Had she already messed this up? By admitting something like that? How could she be certain this wouldn't be spilled everywhere? How could she be certain that this stranger wouldn't share everything she said to her friends, talk to them about how this freak she met was a violent and horrible person.

Sandy needed to get out. She needed to get away, or something, or anything. Her brain overrode anything of the silly comments that were said, any of the compliments that certainly could never hold truth. Nobody would talk to someone like her in such a kind manner, nobody would ever even dare. She was a terrible person, someone who deserved nothing near the softness of tone that she was being given.

"I-I..." She stumbled, "Thanks- I- Um, I think I'm gonna just get, um, going now. I-I don't really feel like panicking over a spider again, right? I... I appreciate you trying, and being so nice, but I really don't deserve this. So I'm just- I'm gonna go, and you can forget about all of this. Yeah? Okay? Okay-..."

With that, Sandy quickly released the girl's hand, breathing rapid and uneasy as she made her way over to the exit, as calm and casual as she possibly could seem despite the near extreme volume of an incoming panic attack. Everything was so bright, too much. She had already talked too much, had said too much, and now it would be spread everywhere about how terrible she is. Nobody would want to be around her again, they'd all avoid her, and it'd just be the little park by her old school all over again. Sitting on the rocks and watching everyone play.

If Elena wasn't one to advocate violence in any way, shape or form, exceptions were sometimes made. When someone hurt the ones she cared about, for example. Her rage didn't come in devastating blazes, or angry explosions - it was quieter, colder, a feeling clinging onto her souls, claws of steel clutching her heart, like a storm brewing in the deepest parts of her chest. And right now, gazing at the girl's tembling figure, still frightened from whatever past ghosts chased her in the halleys of her mind, the storm was alive and roaring. Who ? The growling that threatened to slip past her worried composure held more to the thunder than to animalistic sounds, yet she withdrew it, not wanting to frighten the little bird.

She didn't know the full story yet, just fractured pieces she had managed to blabber, laced with self hatred and overwhelming guilt. A burden no soul had to bear. "Hey," she whispered, turning around and gently tilting the girl's chin, dabbing the tears streaming the girl's cheeks with her sleeve. "Whatever happened was not your fault. There is no such thing as overreacting, you were simply reacting. If your body felt like he deserved that punch, them I'm certain he did." This shivering girl could not harm anyone, and Elena didn't see a single thread of violence woven into this girl's complicated emotions. Whatever that guy did to trigger her fight or flight response... her eyes narrowed in anger, though quickly hidden behind a soft, worried smile.

Elena didn't understand why she felt so protective over someone she had just met, but she could not leave anyone feeling like this. Not her. "You don't have to justify yourself to me, there is no need to," she continued, tilting her head slightly. "But he certainly had no right to break your glasses in response." He was in the right ? I- Bitting the inside of her cheek to muffle any insult that might have blurted out, she shook her head before letting a soft sigh escape her lips. "It wasn't your fault. And you said you don't want to get them fixed because you don't deserve it. That's not true. You do deserve it. You deserve kindness, especially from yourself. Even if you don't want to believe it right now, I'm telling yo-"

The panicked ranting followed by a swift escape cut right through her words, as the fleeting girl disappeared around the corner. Merlin's beard- Blinking twice, Elena didn't have time to process what had just happened before trailing down the girl. And you talk about emotional hatred. This blonde haired girl was visibly torn between what her anxiety dictated her, and the overwhelming bubbling ocean of emotions that threatened to spill at any minor inconvenience. That resulted in her oversharing or overreacting whenever she had the chance to - because she suppressed it - and then overthinking what had just spilled. Take a teacup. Drop it once, from a high height. Let's pretend it shatters slightly, but doesn't break. Observe the cracks, but don't fix them, just put the pieces back in their place. Now drop it from a very low height. Watch it break into a thousand pieces. Then yell at it for overreacting, because after all it wasn't that high, was it ? Put the pieces back together, and glue them. What, you can still see the cracks ? What, it will break again ? Hmm. It's the teacup's fault, right ? It should have been stronger. What's a teacup if it can't handle a few falls ?

Errupting in the corridor like a madwoman, it took Elena a few seconds to spot the girl. Or rather hear her. Calming the frenetic beating of her heart, she slowly made her way to the curled up, shaking figure and knelt. She knew panic attacks all too well - hell, she had one every god damn nights. But easing someone was never easy, and Elena didn't know if she could act in a wrong way. Letting her heart lead, she simply drew the girl closer in a tight embrace, resting her head on top of the sobbing girl's. Hand running up and down her back, in a soothing movement, she stayed like that for what seemed like hours.

"You don't have to hold your tears," she murmured, voice muffled by the girl's tousled hair. "Crying is okay. It's normal. You're normal. You're not too much, you're not broken and you're not alone. I'm right here and not leaving."

Can you mend a shattered teacup ?

Whatever this weird interaction was, it was over.

Sandy, just moments after hitting the corridor and knowing her pitiful exit had somewhat worked given the lack of steps behind her immediately, felt nothing more than some weird void. It was a sinking feeling in her gut, that note that something had gone horribly wrong and she had no idea what it was, nor how to fix it. Her hands shook as she walked, stumbling as the blurred image of the ground didn't quite match up with the rest of her surroundings.

This was ridiculous, wasn't it? She didn't need some pity party, she didn't need to be upset over ruining her own image. What was there to ruin that wasn't already destroyed? Every act, every single moment in her life had been failed one way or another. Her mother had always talked about how she should never go into gambling, and while it was a comedic comment about her lack of poker face, that was still true for now. She didn't have the confidence to pretend, didn't have anything to make herself seem like a better person. All she had was this weird void of space inside her chest, and faint sounds of sobs that echoed through her own ears. She recognized them as her own, one hand pressed over her mouth and the other digging her nails into her own palm.

The descent into hysterics starts slow, nails against flesh until a flashing sensation of pain erupts. It doesn't take long for her breathing to become erratic, a dry sensation as she heaves for air that never quite comes. It burns, everything around her is scorching, a forest fire of her own creation that water can't quite fix. The flames, a voyeuristic passenger to the act of her own, spread throughout her body until she's forced to rest. Her hand comes to hold the wall nearest to her instead, atlas to the world, keeping her afloat for a few seconds until it all comes crashing down again. There's a faint sting of her knees as they give out, hitting the floor, and she can take note of just how embarrassing this all is. She's in a hallway, on the floor, sobbing over something entirely in her control. That's how it is to be human, is it not? But Sandy doesn't feel human, she doesn't feel anything aside from the psychosomatic pain that bleeds throughout her lungs and into the rest of her aching body. All she feels for a moment is the shake of her body and the heaving breaths that never quite fill her with enough air. It's not enough to calculate the shifting and movement of something else, not enough to distract her from her main problem of acting normal and calming herself down.

And then there's warmth. It's faint and soothing and Sandy doesn't react until her body is telling her that this warmth isn't just environmental, but rather humanoid. The same stranger from before, the same one who should be reacting to her with disgust. She doesn't understand the task that some people feel, to chase after horrible people just to make them feel better. She doesn't understand for a long time, hands weakly clutched at the other girl - in an attempt to pull away, or to keep closer, she doesn't know. Every attempt seems futile, the blubbering of nonsense words that are haphazardly coughed out to a comforting frame, pressure equally overwhelming and calming.

Pathetic efforts to push away end quickly, with shaky hands instead moving to grasp the other girl as close to her as possible. Normal. Sandy is not normal, she is everything from it, and yet whoever this is keeps making her appear so. She's far too weak to argue in the moment, tears staining her place below the stranger's chin, tucked tightly against a combination of skin and clothing. It's as close as she can manage without seeming too desperate, without untangling her position on the ground and framing this person as a lifeline, but Sandy feels like it is. Even then, with such a human trait as vulnerability, Sandy does not feel linked to that humanity that her company believes she is. She feels estranged, a ghost viewing the rollercoasters bolts break apart, but no matter the state of humanity sent flying down that broken rollercoaster, she wants it. It's all she wants.

Yearning for something everyone should have, being able to cry without it feeling pervasive and like it attaches to the soul of others. Sandy wants to cry, wants to laugh and fall in more ways than one, and more than anything she wants this experience to be just like everyone else, to be normal. When Sandy does let herself feel that way, she wants it to be just like the crowd, to be viewed not by whatever bullshit makes her and her family up, but as a collective in the larger scale of the universe. Everyone is specks in the universe, everyone means nothing, and Sandy wants nothing more than to be nothing. She wants to be able to rot away without anyone noticing her, and yet every single time there's someone to point her out, someone to make her known, and Sandy hates it. She hates it more than spiders, more than sobbing until her bones ache and her cries have become silent with the lack of breath, more than the mischaracterization of sharks and snakes and every other potentially dangerous thing around.

Sandy wants to blend in, and yet everything she does backfires. Even now, sobbing in a silent hallway, forcing another person to deal with the embarrassment of knowing her, she is ruining everything she's working towards. Every single time Sandy does anything, she ruins it. She ruins plates, glass cups, leather jackets, friendships, interactions, life. She yearns and strives and yet ruins it every single time without fail. What is she meant to do? What is she meant to say when everything she does, everything she makes, comes crashing down at her own hands?

"I'm sorry. You-" She breathes in harshly, a cough escaping, "You shouldn't deal with this. Why- why are you here? Why do you stay? There's no point, there's never a point. What are you getting out of this? Out of- of staying with me, of dealing with this shit? It- it always ends the same. The moment someone knows anything, they leave- and they should. They should leave, because I shouldn't- I'm not good to know about, I'm not good to know."

Her shoulders shake as she speaks, shivering, and she holds the stranger closer to her, "Why do you stay? You- you don't even know me. You don't know my name, you don't care about anything I'm saying. This entire time- you've stayed. You've listened to everything, you've tried helping me, but you shouldn't. I don't deserve this. You don't need to deal with me- you don't need to lie either. I'm not- normal. I'm not. You-"

Sandy cuts herself off with more sobbing, the sound quiet, muffled against the girl's body. She knows she should move away, should let go, but Sandy had never been good at leaving anything. Every toy, every piece of food, every burned CD and journal - they all had something of hers, something to leave a place, and the tears that stain this stranger's PJs are no different. Firm hold, wet collars, there was always a remnant of her in everything, bite marks on everything she owned. What was the point of keeping things with her when she wanted nothing of her own? Why did she constantly hold things closer, only to push them away? She didn't understand. She never really understood much.

Her heart was slowly breaking. Each sob that echoed out of the girl's trembling figure teared a piece of it, each pained attempt to breath deepened the cracks already coursing through it. Shattered, like the one crumbled in Elena's arms. Yet she never hesitated. The moment she had seen the girl's composure falter, cries that tore through her body like a unstopable tempest, the moment she saw the heaving of her shoulders, she followed. Not out of duty, not out of pity, not out of any reasonable choice. Perhaps because she saw herself in this figure, lingering at the borders of humanity, trying to force her way through yet failing each time. Or perhaps she knew better than anyone pain was not meant to be shouldered alone - or it will rot, leave an acid taste on the tongue and retire in the shadows beneath the mind, only waiting to be awakened. The girl's figure, trying her hardest to muffle the scream that threatened to break past her, painfully reminded her of her own, a few years back, during the countless insomnias that had marked her nights. Yearning to be heard yet doing everything to avoid it. The loneliness she had felt then could not - will not - be shared by this girl, not as long as Elena was alive.

She knelt besides her, her presence more of a silent offering than an intrusion. A lighthouse against the storm, an offer at warmth during a blizzard. She did not flinch at the way the girl clutched at her - half in resistance, half in desperate needing. A paradox, a push and pull of a soul that had been told for far too long it was unworthy of love, yet yearned for it all the same.

Elena understood.

She did not speak, at first. Words, in their clumsy mortality, could do so little against the kind of anguish that turned bones to glass and breath to fires. So, instead, she simply was. A steady heartbeat, a solid warmth, an anchor in a sea that had no shore. She let her sob, let her fists tighten and losen as if grasping at the wind. And when the storms had passed, when the gasping breaths became less jagged, she finally spoke, voice no louder than the hush of a tide meeting the sand.

"You demand to know why I stay," she exhaled softly, the weight of the question stettling beneath her ribs. "You ask what I get from this, why should I bother with someone I do not know."

She paused - not hesitation, never that. Just reverence for the moment. The sacred act of understanding, one the always feared would scare away others, for it is terrifying to have someone know you.

"I stay because I see you."

Her words curled into the silence, gentle and unwavering.

"I see the way you think yourself a ruin before you've even been built. The way you carry the weight of your own existence as if it were something shameful, unatural. I see the way you push and pull, terrified of being seen but terrified of being invisible all the same."

She shifted slightly, her touch never forceful but present, grounding. Her arms tighetned around the girl, whose breath seemed to have slowed.

"You say you are not normal," Elena murmured, voice calm yet shivering slightly. "But who among us is ? Who decided what 'normal' was, and why should we bow to it like some unfeeling god ? You are not meant to be normal. You are meant to be you."

Another pause, a breath shared between two souls pressed together in the quiet of a dim-lit hallway. “And yes, people leave. Sometimes they go because they cannot hold what you are without breaking themselves. Sometimes they go because they do not know how to stay. But not everyone leaves. Not everyone flees at the first sign of your truth.”

She did not say this to offer false comfort, nor making promises she could not keep. She did not say she would stay forever, because forever was a cruel thing to swear whrn the world was ever changing. But she was here now, and she would remain as long as she was needed. That was what mattered.

"You don't have to believe me," she whispered, tilting her head ever so slightly to meet those shattered eyes. "Not yet. But if nothing else, believe this : you are not too much. You never were. And you don't have to carry this alone."

Her words rose into silence, sincerity transcending each and everyone of them, and then - softly, carefully - she pulled the girl just a little closer.
