Tiredness was all Dove could feel about now. She used to love this cold season, before entering Hogwarts, were she used to play with her brother in the snow, spend time with her grandparents baking some christmas cookies before time, and drink hot chocolates with marshmalows on it, next to a fireplace, a book on one hand, the cup on the other. All this could seem a little cliché, but according to Dove, winter was supposed to be the calming season, where all the nature is resting from the three previous ones, where the weather was so cold she could spend her day reading, or writing a few poems. What an aesthetic little girl she was. However, since she spend this beloved season at Hogwarts for the first time, her usual feelings were completley different ; starting with these studies she wanted to be perfect so she could have the best grades possible, spending in a place where the luminosity aspirates all her motivation, and ounce of joy she used to feel before opening some book about the new subjects she had been learning since the beginning of the year. This cold weather she used to find so peaceful back in the time was now a synonym of deadly, which she hated with all her heart. And of course, if the inability to work wasn't enough, the lack of the bright star was starting to be missed, a little to much.

Here she was now, ambling in the grounds, since she wasn't able to concentrate on a single book, and feeling like she could sleep at any moment. She didn't want to spend her afternoon in her common room. Indeed, the idea of doing nothing would have depressed her way more. She remembered her grandmother once said that a good walk was the best way to be lost in our thoughts, and make one with ourselves. Of course, if would be better if she was alone, but she was in an establishment full of students, therefore she couldn't be mad at someone who might feel the same as her right now. However, and other problem remained ; her grandmother was the most patient person she had never known, which was the total opposite of Dove's personality. This was one thing she didn't appreciate about herself, when she couldn't concentrate, she wasn't able to wait a bit seeing if it would improve. And now that she was wandering in the grounds, all she was thinking was how long would this walk last. The fatigue that was in her slowly became a small anger, taking a tiny bowl shape in her stomach. The feeling of not wanting to see anyone was slightly growing into her, so she closed her eyes while walking, preventing any way to see someone during what was supposed to be a "peace walk".

A shiver echoed through Louisa McStately’s small frame and she hurriedly pulled her jumper closer to her body. How can it be so cold? She wondered as she continued to walk through the ground. It is quite a beautiful sight, mused Louisa, but the cold is just far too much.

Louisa’s walk had had absolutely no purpose other then to forget about that lovely little letter she should be writing back to her family. But when she wrote she just missed them too much. And when they responded with their happy news of the life without her, she felt burdened by a terrible sadness. I will not cry. I will not cry. Oh, you are being plain stupid! Louisa’s brain hissed angrily. Anyway, if I cry then my tears will freeze and then I will have ice all over my face! Louisa smiles at how pathetic she is being and continues on her pointless ambling.

After less then three minutes, Louisa’s enjoyment in the sights have lowered drastically and instead of allowing her thoughts to go from the cold temperatures or the Christmas celebrations her family would have without her or her horrible lack of friends, she pulls out her favorite Muggle novel, an old, worn, blue copy, and turning to page 83, she begins to read. While the cold frosty air still bit at her ears, her mind was taken far, far away. As she blindly ambled through the grounds, her eyes dedicated to her book alone, something she had grown an unusual talent for, she felt herself relax. This surely was ‘peace’.

While it has its ups, walking with no eyes on the path or surroundings also has its downs. It was only when the young Louisa McStately turned her page from 98, and briefly looked up that she realized she was no longer on her own… Another girl, by her small figure another first year. Feeling a little embarrassed, a little happy to have company, a little annoyed by her reading interruption (although she had undoubtedly caused it) and a tiny bit hopeful that this could be the friend she was looking for.
”Uh, oops! Hello! Sorry to interrupt you…” Louisa’s voice is soft with a hint of nervousness. ”I’m Louisa. Louisa McStately.” Louisa smiles, and realizing she still has her book open, she hurriedly closes it. With a breath, she waits for the girls response.

Her eyelids were indeed covering Dove's eyes, and therefore preventing her to see the "real" world, but what she was seeing with these skin curtains masking her iris was finally starting to make her feel warmer during this cold weather. She pictured her parents, as well as her little brother, hugging her like they used to before she left her house going to her new home. All this stress that had took a place in Dove's heart since the beginning of the year, with all the classes and her putting herself in too much pressure than she should, started to weight more like a feather. The same feather she could see next to her grandparents' lake, surrounded by ducks, which could fly above the little girl, sometimes loosing what was covering their wings, slightly going down, being pushed by the wind that didn't want it to reach the grassy ground and-

Her eyes opened too quick, which erased her thoughts from her minds and brang her back to reality, that was... a girl, who seemed to be her age. The color of her hair reminded her of the numerous hazelnuts she used to see being eaten by squirrels during spring. Her eyes, which seemed a bit shy, were the same shade of brown as her hair. Her skin was not pale enough to look like the only purpose of winter Dove know felt, the snow, but not dark enough like hers. Dove opened her mouth to apologise so she could continue her walk and go back to her thoughts, but no sound had the time to go farther than her teeth, since the hazelnut hair girl spoke to quick. Which would have sound like an appeasing voice in another day, another moment, mostly looked like a naughty tone getting through her ears. Dove wanted to smile, and continue on her way, just like she wanted to before the girl spoke, but this one opened her mouth another time, to introduce herself. Who, in the world, starts teaching her name to an unknown person after getting into them ? she thought for a second, annoyed by the fact she had been interrupted two times. But she decided to be polite, and tried to smile more, because she felt like her eyebrowns were gathered, ans she hoped her gaze was not too mean, which was difficult with her eyes litteraly being two dark abysses.
"Yeah... I'm Dove."

An awkward atmosphere made its entrance, and Dove didn't see herself go now, since the other girl seemed to be kind, but she really wanted to leave, and escape reality another time. Now was definilty not the moment to speak with other human beings. "I'm sorry, it was nice to meet you but I really got to go." Of course, she sais that with an annoyed tone. I really should make more effort when I'm pissed off., and her apology said, she looked at the ground and started walking again, when she realised her shoulder wasn't in the air anymore. Ho no... She could heard something falling and then being in contact with the ground, in some more annoying sound, with made the bowl growing a little bit more into Dove's stomach. She turned around and saw some blue book on the floor.
"Okay, listen I'm sorry I didn't mean to... make your book fall."

She didn't know if she had to help the girl, because she realised she hadn't been very kind to her since they met, but at the same time, would the other girl accept the help of some annoying child ?

Louisa McStately smiled politely and with an hopeful excitement as the girl introduced herself. Dove? Interesting name! Louisa almost spoke this out loud, but thankfully managed to save herself the embarrassment by keeping her mouth closed. While Louisa’s smile remained firmly plastered on her face, she felt a little… odd. The Dove girl’s eyebrows were knitted together and Louisa felt as though her dark eyes were piercing her. Louisa shook the thought out of her mind. How on earth am I supposed to make friends if I judge people this quickly? Honestly, you are just being silly! Louisa almost sighed of relief when the girl smiled back at her.

It was when the first year announced that she would go that Louisa felt her stomach rock uncomfortably. The words on their own were quite alright, in fact they could have been considered nice. But it was the way the girl spoke them made Louisa feel as though she was doing something greatly wrong. Her previous smile turned downward and it took a little effort for her to mumble a little “Oh, yes, right!”

In all honesty, it could have been highly likely that young Louisa McStately was overthinking and overreacting, in fact she had been known to do both of those things on regular occasions. Louisa felt her face growing into a bright red color, something that often happened when she was uncomfortable with a situation. She stood awkwardly, waiting for Dove to leave, her face directed at the ground so as not to make eye contact. The sound of footsteps informed Louisa that Dove was leaving. Feeling a sense of disappointment and relief that the girl was no longer engaging in an awkward and somewhat odd conversation, she began to let her thoughts travel to her short conversation with Dove.

Louisa’s thoughts only managed to travel to why the girl had to leave so abruptly, when something happened. With her eyes so obediently starring at the ground, Louisa wasn’t quite sure how it happened. All she knew was that one moment the book was steadily grasped in her hand and the next there was a thud and it had landed at her feet

Her head jolted up in surprise to look at Dove. Louisa’s previously sweet, innocent smile turned into a look of sad annoyance. The girl was apologizing but Louisa felt far too overcome by the emotion of her meeting to feel that it was sincere. What was the point of saying ‘okay, listen’? No, she was not going to listen! And it wasn’t just ‘her book’! It was one of her most prized possessions that she had from her muggle world at school! The girl looked as though she had no idea what to do, and Louisa felt even more annoyed that the girl wasn’t even trying to help. Not that Louisa would let her anyway.

Louisa bent down hurriedly, scooped up her book and pulled it into a small cradle of protection. She wasn’t about to let it take another fall any time soon. With her prized book in her arms, she turned to Dove ready to speak. What Louisa had meant to say would of been along the lines of ‘No, it’s fine. Thanks for the apology and do enjoy your walk! Yes, something like that would have been perfectly old fashioned. But all Louisa managed to say was an icy and sarcastic, “thanks for helping!” Feeling a little surprised by her words, even though they matched her feelings, she turned to gauge Dove’s reaction and consider making amends. Louisa waited, if the girl’s reaction was sympathetic then she would certainly apologize, otherwise she would have to decide how to react.

While she was watching at Louisa getting her books back, Dove felt some remorse. If her parents were looking at her, they wouldn't be very proud of her. Indeed, since her birth, well maybe a bit after, they taught her to always help others, even if you don't really want to. Moreover, she could sense some tension coming from the brown haired girl, which made Dove feel embarrassed about herself. She walked back, starting to avoid this tensed situation that was clearly spoiling her day, which already wasn't the best even before the two girls met. The problem was she knew she would feel bad if she hadn't even pronounced a simple apology, so she waited for Louisa to pick up her books before saying anything. However, this simple moment during a few seconds felt like minutes, even hours, this was so heavy to watch, so she looked away, feeling her snow skin becoming pinker, and not assuming what she did. Finally, when Louisa turned her face back to Dove, she moved her lips to escape her "sorry", but wasn't speed enough. Indeed, the “thanks for helping!” thrown at her came quicker. If the Irish girl had the ability to see herself at the third person, she would have seen the most chocked face possible. Even if she kind of deserved it, it didn't feel good receiving such a sarcastic sentence directly at her, mostly when You are supposed to be The sarcastic one. She know it was bad, but the envy of apology disappeared the second she heared this. But, she had to answer, and say something to prove Louisa she wasn't some easy girl, and quick, or this would be awkward.
"Oh you're welcome. See, it wasn't that difficult to get your books back" she said, forcing her Irish accent she found quite unpleasant to hear, seeing the situation. She should have stayed here, either waiting for a response, or just leave, like she should have done minutes ago. But no, she still hadn't the maturity to know when to stop.
"After all, after seeing what you were reading, it didn't make me want to help you, sooorrryyy." Here was the "sorry" she should have said before, and in a nicer way, but it annoyed her so much she didn't even regret it. She smiled, looking at Louisa's eyes, and waiting for her reaction.

L ouisa McStately stood holding her book close to her chest and waiting for the apology that she was so sure would come. So when Louisa’s sarcasm was met with another bout of sarcasm from the Dove girl, Louisa’s stomach did an uncomfortable jump. She really hated how rude she had been to the girl, but her words made Louisa’s guilt disappear in a flash. Surely that’s not your best comeback! Louisa wanted to snap bitterly, but she held it back with a great deal of restraint, and instead gave the girl a calm sort of glare.

The other girls voice of an Irish accent, which Louisa found quite nice sounding but wasn’t about to admit any day soon, spoke once more. This time she said something about ‘what she was reading’ and that not making her want to help. Louisa frowned, she had absolutely no idea what the other girl was talking about. Maybe I’m far behind and it was a joke? Or an insult? But she couldn’t even see my book’s title! Louisa thought nervously. Louisa frowned, she had no idea what to say and right now she really wanted to just make amends with the girl.

But it was the way she said sorry that really hit the nerve and caused Louisa’s reaction to be far too dramatic and her hot head took over once more. This time there was no innocent, nor faking sweet voice, it was a high angry sort of sound. “What’s wrong with you?” Now a hint of sarcasm entered. “Oh, wait, we’re you scared of picking it up because your clumsy and might have fallen in a heap? Or perhaps, you just think that everything’s a dream. Or maybe your just a…” A certain word came to little Louisa’s thoughts, but she had never sworn and instead she avoided it. “…A rude, ignorant little snob!” Louisa spat coldly.

Louisa almost gasped in surprise when she realized all she had just said to the girl. She was almost positively sure she had never been that rude to anyone before. And at Hogwarts - where she was supposed to be making new friends! All she needed to do was apologize, and perhaps they could both forget this occasion. The snob comment was a bit ridiculous too! Louisa thought somewhat embarrassedly, wondering why she couldn’t have said something plain good! She really wasn’t too bad at sarcasm usually either. With an almost apologetic smile, the little Hufflepuff looked at Dove - hoping her reaction wouldn’t be too bad, but then she had started it!

While waiting for an answer, Dove could notice some nervosity escaping Louisa's eyes, which started to make her feel a little bad. But she didn't want that feeling grow inside of her, so she put it away, trying to foccus on something else, like how would the brown haired girl react ? Will she ignore her ? Go away as if Dove didn't deserve hearing the song of Louisa's voice ? Or maybe she could start crying, which the Irish girl hoped wouldn't happen since, let's not forget that, she absolutly didn't want to feel bad. But when Louisa opened her mouth letting escape some angry voice from it, Dove took a tiny step back, she was so surprised by this reaction, she didn't expect it at all. However, what made her heart tighten is the sarcasm tone she used against her. This usually was Dove's thing, and she definitly didn't appreciate it. Louisa seemed like she couldn't stop, and when she did, the last word she used was... "snob" ? She litterally could have used any other word to describe Dove's pretension, but snob was the only one that came into her mind ? This was so unexpected Dove chuckled hearing it. Of course, being insulted didn't feel nice, Dove could actually notice a tiny bowl in her stomach, but laughing at what Louisa said seemed to be what she needed to make it disappear. It didn't word, but somehow she didn't want to end this discussion. In fact, she wanted to leave it once Louisa learned that Dove wasn't an easy girl. Although she didn't seem like one since the beginning, she wanted to make it the clearest.
"Are you serious ? A snob, is that all you have to say ? I kinda expected more from you, if you see what I mean..."
She let a bit of a suspense, so she could think a little before continue her sentence. She took a long look at her, from the top to the bottom, searching something she could say. However, nothing came to her mind, so to stop this awkward silence, she said the first thing that appeared in her head.
"After all, that's kinda a Hufflepuf thing, isn't it ? Being so... naive."
The Slythering side form her mother just replaced the wise one she used to have. But it felt so good, not being walked by Louisa, not being some of a victim, and just affirming herself.

L ouisa McStately expected one of two things from Dove. The first would be that she would be angry too and say something rude or sarcastic back, and the second was that she would not answer, and simply storm away. So it was to Louisa’s complete surprise when the girl simply laughed! A small flicker of shock covered the young Badger’s face and her eyebrows raised involuntary.

It seemed that the laughter did nothing whatsoever to clench her growing annoyance, in fact, the absence of a dramatic reaction seemed to do the exact opposite. Apparently her mood was hardly stable today because Louisa’s hands clenched tightly into small balls and her usually very beautiful eyes, sharpened coldly.

But when the girl spoke again in that horrible Irish accent, any attempt at a smile was completely forfeited. “Well, it’s not class is it? So if I don’t get an,” she paused for a moment about to say A+, but not wanting to give Dove something else to mock, she quickly continued, “O, I won’t be too disappointed!” Louisa’s cold voice exaggerated the ‘too’ and stopped at the end with a slight flourish on her words.

She took a sharp intake of breath, and refused to say anything more and instead glared at the other girl. It was when the Dove girl spoke of Hufflepuff that Louisa felt her stomach churn, but she couldn't resist answering the question accurately “No, Hufflepuff values Loyalty, kindness and bravery towards friends and families. They are known to look after others very well, often caring for their well-being more than…” Louisa stopped abruptly, as if just realizing that she wasn’t in class and instantly turning back to her beloved sarcasm. “Well, your supposed to know that aren’t you, being in Ravenclaw and all? Or did you just miss the smarts? What a pitty!” The Hufflepuff’s face dropped as if worried before a small smirk crossed her face. She hadn’t realized how capable at sarcasm and changing her shown moods she was, although there was a fair amount of anger still bubbling in her chest.

The first year stood stiffly in the wintry landscape, her anger allowing her to barely feel a thing. She knew one thing though, she was not leaving first! Because that would show she’d lost, and Dove would be the loser…

Listening to Louisa praising her house made Dove feel dumb, she already was aware of all the Hufflepuff's values, she only said that because she was out of arguments, but she didn't want Louisa to notice Dove was wrong, so she just rolled her eyes during the long puffy speach, who had seemed to start a whole cursus on her house. When she stopped, finally she thought, Louisa decided to play Dove's game, which didn't please her at all. Yeah, sure Dove wasn't beeing the best picture of her house right now, but was it a reason to reduce Ravenclaw to some smartness ? If Louisa wanted to give Dove a lesson about how her house, Hufflepuff, was more than just some words to describe it, then she must shut herself about criticizing Dove's. Thinking so, the black haired girl couldn't just keeping it in mind.
"I don't understand, you are the one saying Hufflepuff isn't at all about being naive, then why are you saying that because I don't seem smart to you, I don't deserve being in Ravenclaw ?"
She didn't want to attack her verbally, she has already done enough, but she did like giving people lessons when they deserve it.
"And since you seem to like making some presentation of your house's values, let me do the same for mine.
She took a quick breath, because when she talked for a long time, her voice used to loose its tone, making it a bit ridiculous, and mostly not in this situation, where she wanted to have a minimum of authority for what's coming.
"You are talking about intelligence, indeed it's one of our values, but we also have wisdom or wit. Then, you'll say 'But Dove, you mind wasn't wise at all right now', and you are right, because rarely are when it comes to sarcasm."
She didn't know what to add next, she had the feeling that anything more would be useless, she had told Louisa what she wanted to. She felt like their argument didn't have any sense anymore, but she didn't want to leave right now. Inside of her, she didn't want to be like a looser.
