She was lost. Savannah was certain that the castle had already changed from the time she had first entered a mere two hours ago. The dark-haired girl stood in the empty ballroom in front of one of the many massive windows. At least here, she had the best view of the Great Lake and by God, it was beautiful. Savannah snaked her long arms around her own midsection, wrinkling the now red and gold robes. The 11-year-old knew she was home. She could feel it in her very bones. But for some reason, she couldn't shake the hollow feeling that had invaded her belly.

Her face flushed red, but her eyes didn't waver from the lake. Her doe-brown eyes slowly began to well with too-hot tears, her bottom lip trembling with the weight she carried on her narrow shoulders. Savannah did her best to banish the tears, but they persisted and the hurt grew. A bitter smile creased her face. It was funny, how she could so easily find security in Hogwarts when in her 11 short years the same couldn't be said for her mother. For their little apartment in Glasglow. All because of what? Magic? The girl sniffed and angrily wiped her eyes on the back of her hands. She squared her shoulders and took a large calming breath. If anything, her magic made her more deserving. Hogwarts was a beautiful place and these powers that she possessed, that they all possessed, had to be protected. There was nothing wrong with her. If anything there was something wrong with her mother. Humans. Muggles, she had heard other kids call them. Their instinctual reaction to anything that was different, was hate. History told her that much.

Savannah wanted to learn about the government. About what they had in place to protect witches and wizards, to protect their secrecy and way of life. It was 2019. Muggles had guns, bullets moved faster than some spells. Who was responsible--if anyone, for finding magical children, in the care of muggles? Anger made her flush hotly, thick brows narrowing into a glare. She doubted that the wizarding world had the infrastructure to nurture and protect a growing society. That had to change.  It was in that moment of soothing rage, that Savannah realized what she wanted to contribute to this brand new world; Security.

She'd never cry again, not for her mother and the love she so desperately wanted. Not for any filthy muggle. They weren't her people. They weren't worthy of her tears.

With one final sniff,  Savannah turned to walk away from her spot at the window, quietly taking in the covered dining tables and stacked chairs. She what type of events were held in the ballroom, and who prepared for them. She needed to study. The dark-haired girl spared a glance towards the doors behind her, ignorant of what may lay behind them. Savannah reached into her pocket and clutched at the dark colored wand, the wood humming with magic in her hand, soothing her frayed nerves.

[quote]Somehow, someway, she had survived her first year at Hogwarts. Between the nearly unbearable sleepless nights, fights, and that stupid, stupid Gryffindor ball... She wasn't expelled, nor was she six feet under. Now she would have to watch others in her place just about a year ago. Nervously scurrying around the castle, a haze of confusion and angst following as they stuck together in herds like their lives depended on it. And while it felt good that she was a year older, a new chance for adventure, it was overwhelming. Scanning the underclassmen down, trying to figure out who had a life like her. Who had seen more than they should have. Who were shunned, hated, craved to be surrounded by love and warmth. And the others, blissful ignorance practically radiating off their bodies.

Footsteps echoing in the hallway, Marla weaved through students of every age, who all, of course, managed to be taller than her. That in itself wasn't a very big feat since she sadly only stood at 4'2. Which sucked, because everyone still thought she was a first year when she was, in fact, not. She stood on her tippy toes in a failed attempt to see in front of her, golden eyes scanning across the corridor. There were too many people and she needed out. In the corner of her eye, a familiar doorway glittered, one that she had made her way into only twice. The ballroom. It was only used for parties, so right now, it would be empty, right..?

Racing her way towards the ballroom, a feeling of nausea made its way up her throat. Why wasn't she happy? Nothing terrible happened. In fact, Marla was somehow selected to become a prefect. Not only that, but she was on the newspaper team. She should be ecstatic, helping students find their way to classes, monitoring hallways.. And here she was, chickening out before the real work even started. Marla pushed the gigantic doors to the ballroom just enough that she could slip inside. They shook the ground slightly before slamming shut, leaving her in the nearly quiet, vast and elegant space.

And that's when it hit her. Nobody would be happy for her. She wouldn't be able to look forward to her family's praise, never would the words 'I'm proud of you' reach her ears. They would just constantly find ways to resent her existence more, nothing would ever satisfy them. Tears threatened to fall from her eyes. Marla blinked, letting them fall down her cheeks and wiped them immediately. This was irrelevant. She was already aware of it. But like a tsunami, it all came at once, drowning her in the life that could have been if her mother wasn't dim-witted enough to have that affair. She held back the urge to scream, yank out her hair, anything. Hands aching with temptation, she rubbed them together and closed her eyes, listening to the silence that rung in her ears.

But instead of that, she heard a very unfamiliar noise, sniffling. Whipping her head around, there was another figure at the other side of the room. A small, startled cry escaped her lips as she flinched, eyes going wide. "Do you- do you mind?" She asked cooly, her voice echoing through the room. The Gryffindor crossed her arms and looked to the side, for how could she bear to make eye contact with someone that possibly witnessed her crying? Squinting her eyes, Marla could just about make out a face. It was definitely a girl, tanned skin and tall. She looked like a second year, but if she were one, Marla would most likely have seen her in classes. Especially because of the red and gold crest that could be barely seen on her robes, just a speck on the black fabric. That either made her a third or first year, and she was definitely too young to be a third year. "Shouldn't you be in a tour group right now, or somethin'?" Marla urged. It wouldn't hurt to try to get her to leave. She needed to be alone, no exception for this weird stranger. She put her hands at her side, pulling up her too long robes in an attempt to bring attention to her prefect badge. If the girl knew that she was a member of authority, she'd hopefully listen.

"your loss, baby !!"

"Hi...?"

“Do you mind?”
Savannah had watched the red-haired girl enter the ballroom. Another Gryffindor judging by the robes. The first year didn’t unfold her arms from her chest, lips twisting in mild annoyance as she appraised the other girl. “Oh, ‘am sorry Headmistress, ‘ah didn’t realize these were your private quarters” Savannah drawled sardonically, her temper bubbling beneath the surface as she offered a mocking curtsey. The other girl avoided her gaze and Savannah snorted some, taking the opportunity to wipe away whatever wetness remained on her cheeks while she still could.
It was hard to guess the other student’s age, from about 11 to 13, they all sort of looked the same. It wasn’t until 14 that most kids lost the roundness of baby fat from their features and began to look more like adults. Savannah knew she looked old for age. There weren't that many 5'5 11-year-olds. She prided herself on being unlike the masses. There was nothing more sinful than being ...boring.

"Shouldn't you be in a tour group right now, or somethin'?" The doe-eyed girl finally noticed the other student's accent, guard dropping a little in the presence of a fellow scot. Savannah offered a slight shrug before letting out a heavy sigh, some of the fire leaving her words. “Yeah well, I may have gotten a lil’ lost.” She said quietly, somewhat reluctant to admit her own mistake. “It’s like the castle is always shiftin’ about, trying to get you turned around on purpose.” The 11-year-old decided to approach the other girl, closing the rather large distance between the two. It would do no good to just yell back and forth. Savannah decided to forgo the spite. After all, the other girl was a member of her own house.

“My name is Savannah Rose, I’m from Glasgow.” She offered her slender brown hand, nails bare and clean, palms soft. “Do you think…you could show me how to get to the dorms?” Given their newfound closeness, Savannah had the opportunity to examine the other girl’s face and did so with blatant scrutiny. She noticed how red-rimmed the other girl's eyes were, the same pinkish colour adorning her nose.

“I guess everyone comes to this place to cry alone.” Her tone was dry, but a wry smile danced at her lips as she looked back over her shoulder at the large windows. “Well, there’s no time for any of that now. We’re witches. We don’t cry unless we’re using our tears for spells, amirite?” Savannah offered a wide smile, attempting to use humour to console the obviously flustered Gryffindor girl. She only cared because they shared the same accent and the same colour robes. She was a witch now. Her first priority should be her people; even if they’re rude little red-head girls.
