| xxxxxx | Peeking inside the study room and ensuring that it's unoccupied, Aurelia tentatively stepped in. The room looks neat and organised, no litter at all. The young badger approached a vacant table—they are all vacant, of course—and laid down her leather satchel. She intends to come here early, specifically before 10 a.m., as she does not like being late. Still clutching the large board against her chest, Aurelia tucked a rebellious curl behind her ear before settling down in one of the chairs. Dating back to September, the young Hufflepuff witch had bought a chessboard back in Diagon Alley as she forgot her board at home. Since opening it in her dormitory room to play by herself, it was a little different than she thought it would. The chessmen move about by themselves, they squabble and try to smash each other when unattended. It was pure chaos that Aurelia did not open the chessboard again. It was sold to her in a fancy price and the seller had called it Wizard's Chess. Aurelia, of course, ignorant of the ways of the Wizarding World, just thought that Muggle Chess and Wizard's Chess might not be that different to each other. It might have the same mechanics, but the young badger did not expect the chess pieces to be sentient! She has read in the Hogwarts Library that these chessboards are implanted with Piertotum Locomotor spell, explains the movement of the chessmen under command or not. “This should be children’s hazard. Merlin, these pieces are violent,” Aurelia monologued softly as she rest the large chessboard on the table before opening it. If anyone is in there with her, they will notice that Aurelia stuck the chess pieces on the inside walls of the board with an adhesive tape to prevent them from smashing it each other. They do. They do it all the time. If they can talk, they might be screaming to each other every day with certain profanities that elderly people might clutch their pearls and pray. As she unstuck them from the tape, the chessmen wriggle in her palms to try to reach each other. “Try me right now, you little shits. Behave or I swear to Merlin, I will smash you all myself to the point a simple Reparo spell will not fix anything,” Aurelia threatened irritably with her deep brown eyes squinted. She all let them go when they stopped wriggling in her palms. Satisfied with their obedience, the young badger started placing them in their respective spots. The chessboard is a combination of wood and cream colours, especially with the squares and also the pieces. It is so satisfying in the eyes, Aurelia can say so herself. Pursing her lips, the young badger went over her objective all over again inside her head. Aurelia had asked since September to the prefects if there are clubs for muggle chess or wizard’s chess. They told her that there are no such things in Hogwarts. Gobsmacked by that fact, the young badger intends to start one herself. She is slightly discouraged, of course, because if there are no clubs of those two variants of chess, then no one might be interested. So she plans to start with baby steps, like sticking an invitation to a game of wizard's chess on the noticeboard of the Hufflepuff Common Room. One immediately owled her back, a fellow First Year named Pamela Graham. Aurelia, being unfamiliar with her fellow Hufflepuffs herself, accepted this letter and invited her to play a chess game in the Study Room. The Hufflepuff Common Room is a nice place, of course, yet Aurelia is self-conscious since she's no expert in both variants of chess. The game is all for fun and an examination! The pawns, she observed, are the smallest piece (just like in muggle chess). They are brandishing two swords in each hand while wearing flat mining helmets. Because of the stud on their backs, they looked like they were crouching. The rooks, of course, are slightly taller. They are equipped with large shields and nose guards. The knights are riding their respective horses, also brandishing their swords. They are positioned to look like the horses are galloping in the middle of the war. Bishops look like... Bishops. They are equipped with that tall hat and staff. They stand wisely with a large shield on their backs decorated with a large cross. The queens, Aurelia's favourite piece (she's a little biased), look regal in their own way. They stand so tall with their royal crowns, competing with the knights and rooks; their cloaks are long and spread. Lastly, the kings. They are seated in their respective thrones, also wearing their royal crowns. The muggle chess pieces looked nothing like these chessmen. Aurelia busied herself organising the chess board as she waits for Pamela. ![]() |

Speech -- Thoughts
Pam was excited.
She had grown up learning to play chess. Her father had taught it to her saying "it's something you should know and it will help develop your mind." What had started off as a pastime had grown into an obsession for Pam. What annoyed her to absolutely no end was the fact that in today's world, not a lot of people knew or even bothered to know how to play the game. Like seriously, y'all are missing out on a LOT. Things had not proven any different when she had been introduced to the Wizarding World. Albeit, she hadn't thought of chess in a while, with the rush of adjusting to the newness and everything else. But she had not hesitated for a second when she came by the notice on the Hufflepuff Notice Board.
Wizard's Chess. Pam was ashamed of the fact that she had not heard of the magical equivalent of her beloved game. That did not stop her from spending a good two hours in the library, reading up everything she could find on it. Two hours hadn't really been necessary. The rules and stuff were the same, only difference being the fact that the pieces were alive. She had gotten sidetracked and read up about the spells that had been used.
She hesitated outside the study room, attempting to remember the girl's name. She found it hard to remember names if there wasn't a face to link it to. She couldn't remember well sometimes even with faces to link to. "What was it?" She muttered, "Aurelia.....something...." She frowned, "Oh. Oh, right! Valentine." She smiled in relief, "Aurelia Valentine." She reached out to push open the door but then frowned again. How am I supposed to find her if I don't know what she looks like. She shrugged, Well, guess I'll just ask around.
She really shouldn't have bothered. The study room was empty except for a raven haired girl girl sitting at a table with something, which was obviously a chessboard. She walked over to the girl and said with a smile, "Hi. You must be Aurelia? I'm Pam. I'm here for a game of Wizard's Chess?"

| xxxxxx | Aurelia lifted her eyes towards the door when it opened to reveal a blonde girl, her curls cascading silkily. She has seen this certain Hufflepuff girl around, like in classes and in the Common Room. When the girl approached her, she immediately stood up from her seat and offered a small smile as well as an outstretched hand to shake. This young badger rarely shows her appreciation towards other people, but unlike other instances and interactions, this meeting is precedented, planned, and besides, they are here for a game of Wizard's Chess! “Hello, Pamela. It's nice to finally meet you! My name's Aurelia, and yes, our game of Wizard's Chess will commence right here,” She doesn't know if she contained her enthusiasm perfectly, but she certainly is suppressing it. Her deep brown eyes twinkled like it had never twinkled before, enough to compete against stars. Her cheeks are glowing in exhilaration; her usual stoic expression has disappeared temporarily and she couldn't stop smiling! Who could blame her? She played chess leisurely alone and had never played with anyone before. The streak simply ends today. Aurelia Margaret Valentine is a pretty competitive person. However, if Pamela beat her in today's game, then that would be entirely fine for her. The young badger is just initially elated that someone is willing to play with her. She gestured to the chair in front of her, encouraging her fellow badger to sit. Turning towards the chessboard, she is still not done organising it. Picking up the rook, Aurelia wondered what Pamela's blood status was. No, of course, it doesn't matter—however, it will determine if the Hufflepuff witch played Muggle Chess or Wizard's Chess. Not that it mattered too, since they both have similar mechanics. Without other students loitering in the study room, the space is filled with awkward silence. Better strike a conversation. “So, have you played Wizard's Chess before? I haven't. I bought this board in total accident; of course, I forgot to pack my board at home and begged my Mum to buy me another board once we saw one in Diagon Alley. It was a disaster when I first opened it in my dorm room. They are sentient and therefore move about of their own accord. I couldn't play alone, since they run amok! I threaten them sometimes to behave. Somehow, commanding them is weird for me instead of touching the chessmen themselves—I suppose they didn't like being manhandled like that, or perhaps the creator intended for it to glorify the players themselves so they can play army commanders commanding their troops. Of course, ridiculous, at least for me, but I know where they are coming from,” Aurelia blabbered on just to fill in the silence and to also appear knowledgeable. What if this is someone who initially grew up in the Wizarding World and might belittle her for living in the Muggle World her whole life? Not that she was ashamed of it; the world she lived in was also incredible in terms of technology and science. It is a shame that magical energy interferes with electricity and therefore electronic devices and electrical appliances wouldn't work in this part of the world. Noticing that she was chattering again, Aurelia smiled at Pamela apologetically before focusing on organising the chessboard. |

Speech -- Thoughts
Pam couldn't help but laugh at the girl's words, amused by her enthusiasm. Something about her put Pam at ease. "You're better than me." She told her quietly, "I hadn't even heard of Wizard's Chess until I saw your poster. I studied them hard though."
She clicked her tongue in disaste at the thought. it would be quite disappointing if I find out I've lost touch. Pam prided herself on the fact that she knew the game, but then again, "I may not be too good." She said softly, "I mean, I haven't played since I got here. And back at home, I've only played against some school friends and my dad. The formers were terrible at the game, and my dad always won, so I'm not really sure how good I am." She shrugged, "Guess we'll figure out today."
She cleared her throat, walking over to the table to see that the board has not been arranged fully. "Huh." She mused, sitting down, "Can't you tell them to walk to their places?" She picked up a knight in her hand and shrieked, dropping it as it made a strike for her face, "oh dear god—" She flashed the girl and apologetic look, "Sorry that startled me." She swiftly placed the same knight in its place, keeping her hands on it as less as required, and obviously I had to pick the knight. I couldn't have picked one who's name did not say 'will run you with a sword'
She glanced up at the girl, wondering if they would make talk while they played or if they would play in silence. Pam had NEVER played in silence. If it was her friends, there would always be more talking and less playing. In the case of her father, well he loved to talk, and Pam loved to listen to his voice.
She turned her attention back to the board and helped Aurelia set it up. Soon they were ready to begin.

| ?????? | Aurelia clucked her tongue irritably when a cream-coloured knight hopped with the help of its horse and attempted to slice Pamela's face. They are, indeed, violent and quite disobedient, especially when the commands don't involve actual chess moves. They demand fights and bloodshed, in their case, smashing each chess piece they see or deem as adversary. Huffing exasperatedly, the young badger continued organising the chessboard with the help of Pamela. The stubbornness of her chessmen didn't dampen her mood, though. This is too great of a day just to ruin it for a simple hitch such as pig-headed chess pieces. After placing all of them in their respective places—Aurelia definitely did not threaten them to behave under hushed tones, which she was positive Pamela heard—the Hufflepuff witch clasped her hands together as if in prayer. “To decide which colour we’ll play, let’s do it the classic way: you pick a hand, and whatever colour I have in that hand will be yours,” Aurelia said quickly, as if in a hurry. She tentatively picked up two pawns, which squirmed in her hands, both armed with double swords that were too large for her grip. Feeling embarrassed, she switched to the rooks, hiding them behind her back before presenting her knuckles to Pamela for her choice. The other badger chose her left knuckle, revealing a chocolate-coloured rook. Once it was established that Aurelia would play as white and Pamela as black, they both settled into their seats at the same time. Aurelia is beaming, of course, her deep brown eyes twinkling. Her first game where she has an opponent! Being an only child, as well as kind of closed off from the world, did take away some of the wonders of the world that other people take advantage of. Some, just because she is initially abhorrent of human interactions, especially unintended and spontaneous ones. If one has social anxiety, they generally rehearse conversations in their head to appear prepared. In Aurelia's case, she tends to snap at people if spoken to and, most of the time, appears haughty and bossy owing to the fact that she is, indeed, socially inept. “Pawn to e4, please,” the young badger commanded graciously, which the cream-coloured pawn immediately followed through. It ran in the said spot, brandishing its swords, mocking the chess pieces in Pamela's side of the board. Pamela's chocolate-coloured pawns shifted their weights; others flourished their swords too and aimed them at Aurelia's silly pawn. A classic King's Pawn opening. After staring at them reproachfully, she clasped her hands together once again and waited for Pamela's turn. PAMELA GRAHAM ![]() AURELIA VALENTINE |

Ooh, a King's pawn opening.
The move brought Pam a whole wave of deja vu. It had been the opening move of the game she had played with her dad for the first time, when she had just start learning. Pam eyed the white pawns in a mixture of amusement and annoyance. She glanced down at her who were shifting their weight, clearly impatient to start out. "Calm down," she spoke to her pieces simply, wondering if the calming vibe most of her friends told her she had would work on sentient chess pieces.
Once her pieces stopped being shifty, Pam quickly thought up her move. "Pawn to c5" She decided and the pawn in front of her right bishop moved forward by two steps. He brandished his sword at Aurelia's pawn, clearly returning the provocation from a few seconds before and Pam shook her head in amusement, feeling the ripple of disappointment at the lack of bloodshed (plastic-shed?). Well, there would be some soon.
Pam had studied the labelings of the checkered boxes well. Her father had told her about it shortly, but it had not really been needed in day-to-day practice. Now though, it would not be possible to play the game without it.
She glanced up at the other girl, who had fallen silent throughout the last few minutes. I can't really come up with a good conversation topic right now. The girl had been talkative a few minutes ago, Pam now guessed it might have been more from nervousness than being social. "Have you been playing since you were young?" She asked finally.

| ?????? | Aurelia stifled a snicker behind her hand when Pamela had to urge her pieces to calm down because of Aurelia's pawn’s provoking stance at the middle of the board. When the Hufflepuff witch commanded her brown-coloured pawn to march towards c5, it immediately followed through, also flourishing its swords with a scowl on its face. The young badger openly laughed this time. She didn't know that it is fun to play wizard's chess, especially when you play it with someone and their chessmen are short-tempered. It amused her to bits. Shaking her head in the slightest astonishment, her cheeks rosy from delight, Aurelia analysed her board again. Aurelia liked her pieces spread out; she always went to the offence and always had this goal to make the majority of the board her own, her territory. Like packs of wolves that intend to surround their prey to prevent it from escaping. Tilting her head slightly, as if half-expecting the view of the board would be slightly different at a different angle, the young badger commanded another piece again. “Oh, my beloved knight,” Aurelia said theatrically, mustering all her emotions in one breath as if she were a damsel in distress and a white knight had just rescued her from the dragon that guards her very own tower. “You have saved my life, you righteous knight. Move to c3, if you love me.” She said breathlessly, clutching her sweater, pretending that something has gripped her heart. Her cream-coloured knight clearly did not appreciate her abysmal acting performance. It aimed its sword on her face before its horse galloped towards the c3 square, doing a 360 to show off its graceful slow spin. Pamela's knights did not like that implication too, their horses kicking the board and their respective squares. Enjoying this little feud happening in front of her, Pamela's question was almost left unheard. The young badger tilted her head again as if putting her thinking cap on. Meh, no harm done if she reveal a little about herself. “Mmh,” Aurelia nodded slightly, turning to Pamela. “I've been playing since I was a kid. Although, that did not mean I'm an expert. I've never played with anyone before and therefore I couldn't recognise my blunders in this game.” She sighed, her eyes staring on her chess pieces. “My mum bought me a board to accompany me as she leave for work. Also books.” Aurelia mumbled, fidgeting with the loose thread of her dark green sweater. That's enough information! Clearing her throat, she met Pamela's gaze again. “How about you?” PAMELA GRAHAM AURELIA VALENTINE |

"I normally play with my dad back at home. But I can never beat him." She shrugged, glancing up at the girl, "I do enjoy the game, but I'll be honest, there are other things I like more. But I think that's only because I haven't had a good opponent yet."
She eyed the chessboard, preparing to make her next move. Does she play offensive? Pam mused. Her move was a good one, from both the offensive and defensive sides. Pam considered her own move. Albeit, she did not have to think for too long, the move she had decided on was a move she made often when she practiced with her father too. And it was safe. For now.
Pam glanced down at her little army, why exactly am I calling them and army? They were getting impatient for Pam's move and Pam bit her lip as she pushed in a grin, they will not be happy about this. "Pawn to d6." She said, and sure enough her knights started to throw hands, brandishing their little weapons and bring generally whiney. She let out a laugh, "Stop that. Focus!" She clicked her tongue and added,"And have patience."
The irony of the fact that she was saying this to the soldiers in the chess world.

| ?????? | The impatience of these here chess pieces is a fun thing to watch altogether. Perhaps craving the violence that the wars provide, they are shifty and wave their swords rather idly. Some of them are already gesturing advice to make the game more in a kind of speedy pace. Some of them are already leaning on the hilts of their swords, waiting impatiently. It is one of the things Aurelia and Pamela enjoyed seeing unfold. Of course, they are also craving that threats and smashes, but both of these young badgers are taking their sweet time. Strategising and contemplating, people. What is there to contemplate about? Aurelia cannot simply recognise blunders. However, she attempts to save her pieces as much as possible to avoid being captured or smashed into smithereens. Mentioning that Pamela normally plays with her father, Aurelia's eyebrows became knitted slightly. Growing up without a father, it is a matter of question what it felt like growing up with one. She figured there wouldn't be so much of a difference; however, playing with one's father in a game you're interested in sounds really exciting. Too bad Aurelia didn't have a father, as once her mother had been pregnant with her at 16, her father ran away from the responsibility and never looked back. Reportedly a wizard, Aurelia wondered if she'll meet him someday. She fervently wished she wouldn't have to, but knowing how life works in wheels and wonders, she knows it will happen and therefore commence with a smack on her face. “What other things? Do you play more sports?” Aurelia asked, tilting her head as soon as Pamela made her move. The chessmen are growing whiny and restless, already demanding bloodshed and exhilarating activities. Aurelia slightly smiled at that. Too bad for them, but the game is just starting. She is an empathetic commander, though, and therefore she hears the words of her constituents. Squinting her eyes, Aurelia put her hand under her chin as she assessed the board. Aurelia would love to threaten the king through bishop b5; it would rile Pamela's chessmen up. Of course, it is a useless endeavour. The best move Pamela would have to do is to retaliate by pushing her bishop in d7. That way, it will threaten her bishop and force her to choose a defensive stance. However, if Aurelia pushes through, say, Pamela knows that; she should move her knight to d7 instead. So if Aurelia captured and smashed that said knight with her bishop, Pamela would be advised to capture her bishop through her queen or her bishop. Either way, it will free both chess pieces, dominating the spots of the board. The young badger sighed. She really believed having fun meant she'd have to take risks, and she'd rather not lose her bishop at the start of the game. Focus on opening everything for her chessmen instead. She has a plan; however, it would be up to Pamela's move. “Pawn to d4,” Aurelia commanded sternly. Her chessmen looked up at her with a hint of dismay; they must've seen the promise of check through bishop b5. “This is all for your own good; shut up.” The young badger replied to the dismayed looks she received, shrugging her shoulders with a slight smile. Her cream-coloured pawn obliged; however, it didn't brandish its swords, just looking longingly at the spot in b5 where her bishop could've been. Her queen had been disappointed enough that she temporarily sat wearily on the arm of the king's throne. Aurelia turned to Pamela. “I’m having fun already, even if the game started off slow.” PAMELA GRAHAM AURELIA VALENTINE |

Speech -- Thoughts
Pam laughed in amusement at the chess pieces as they kept being generally flighty and generally dissatisfied with the way the two girls were playing the game. They seemed more willing to listen now that the game had started.
She could tell that the pieces wanted to fight, and if that was the case then Pam was definitely not a good....commander? Damn she was speaking military now. She would do her best to avoid fights, especially those which involved losing her pieces. The wooden army may be more than willing to 'die with glory' but Pam was not gonna have any of that if she could help it. And considering the fact that one of Aurelia's pawns could be killed easily made her pretty sure that her next move will not be welcome.
Speaking of next move, it was time to bring out her knights. Although, she wasn't really sure which one. Then again, protection was key. She cleared her throat, "Knight to c6" She decided. The reaction from the board both startled and amused Pam. Both her previously played pawns seemed unhappy about the lack of killing, The knights and bishops seemed happy about movement on their side. As for the queen, Pam decided she liked her best. The black queen was silent, almost bored, but watching the game with intelligent eyes.
She turned to answer Aurelia's question, "Not really. I'm not a big sport person. I like to read books a lot. And I play the piano. So yeah."
