January 13, Evening, Great Hall.

Finnegan sat alone at the Gryffindor table, a solitary figure swallowed by the semi-darkness of the Great Hall. Only a few of the floating candles still burned overhead, and it would not be long before a Professor or Prefect urged him back to his dormitory, the last place on earth he wished to be.

His fork scraped sadly against his plate as he pushed around the same cold potatoes he'd been staring at for the past half hour. The food had long since congealed into a colourless, tasteless grey mass. Clink. Clink. Clink. He moved the food about, but he still wasn't hungry.

The day had aged him, not in years or wrinkles, but in stretching him, hollowing him out, causing his hands to spasm involuntarily, causing his knees to knock together in sudden shudders, causing his legs to feel unsteady like a drunk's.

He hunched forward like an old man. His school robes, already slightly too big for his willowy frame, seemed to swallow him whole. The sleeves slipped past his knuckles as he gripped his fork tighter, a futile attempt to stop the small tremors.

"You are but a tool, and a broken one at that."

Who could have guessed that words held such power? Two whole days had passed, yet Thaddeus's voice still haunted him, mocked him, and bound him no matter the hour.

His thoughts kept circling back to his mam, dad, and sister. They had no clue. They'd never heard him so much as whisper the name Athanatos. They had no idea that he'd been stabbed—or worse, that he'd thought himself clever for befriending his attacker, for kissing him. Bile rose in his throat. He had foolishly believed he could outwit Gideon, even outsmart Thaddeus. What an idiot he'd been. Everyone who had ever called him a bludgerhead, a numpty, or an honest-to-goodness idiot had been right. He was so stupid he couldn't even grasp the full extent of his own stupidity.

Maybe he should go to Professor Lecuyer.

His fork clattered against the plate as his hand spasmed. For a moment, proper hate flared inside him—the kind that made you tense up and want to smash things. He hated Thaddeus with his too-many teeth. He hated Gideon, who loved nothing more than tearing him apart. But what good was hate against people like them? The permission slip for Hogsmeade visits sat crisp in his trunk, signed only months ago by parents who had smiled and called him their "big boy." Meanwhile, his mother still cut the crusts off his sandwiches when he was home.

The candlelight flickered, casting dancing shadows across his face. They reminded him of the way shadows had moved in that empty pub, stretching and writhing like living things. He squeezed his eyes shut, but the memory refused to leave.

When he opened them again, his vision blurred, but no tears came. He had none left to cry. Only a vast emptiness remained, and it filled steadily with a terrible knowledge: he was completely and utterly alone.

Darkened orbs devoured page after page, her voracious mind engrossed so profoundly that the Slytherin was oblivious to the Great Hall growing dimmer and quieter with each waning hour of the evening. It wasn't until a clanking, scraping noise emanating throughout the empty hall shattered Remedy's state of assiduity from the Charms textbook in hand that her gaze scoured the chamber. They'd land upon a solitary mass at the Gryffindor table pushing around remnants of a meal, looking no more than a corpse in a state of decay.

Her eyesight would betray her - unable to put name to face from the distance that separated the two lingering loiterers of the Great Hall. The waning candlelight would also be to blame, and it would not be long until the Professor and Prefects began their nightly rounds to herd stowaways and delinquents alike to their dormitories. Of those, she wasn't, therefore Remedy would mark her page with a cerulean ribbon before stashing the book away inside her leather satchel and began making haste to the entrance.

Curiosity tugged at the darkened, inquisitive corners of her mind the more Remedy stared. Her gait slowed, and her eyes locked on the other being who remained, who appeared so lowly and deteriorated. She'd detour towards the Gryffindor long table, seeking a glimpse of the student's face before departing. Remedy had to know, and it was not until a glimpse of the boy's dreary countenance that she recognized him—Finn, the boyish enigma that remained unsolved.

To this day, the whistle Finn had bestowed her would remain in the Vipress' immediate inventory. Remedy used to reminisce the day often. Her attempt to study him last year left her much more unsettled than before, with more questions than answers, much more than the Slytherin could have bargained for. It was in this very room that Finn had closed the distance between them, grabbed her wrist, and adorned it with an armband on her upper arm. Had her throat not been bone-dry, her mind absent of thought, her nerves not alight with the palpable thrill of being near the muggle-born that bested her blood in combat, Remedy would have remarked something witty or callous then.

She was most certainly a fool for not holding her ground and remained full of self-contempt because the girl’s mind lingered on the thought of the lion far beyond the date of Nurse Dusana’s swimming task. The droplets that clung to his skin and dripped from his hair. Those days were long gone. Remedy had since avoided the Gryffindor like the plague, yet almost broke this avoidant streak the evening Finn had been stabbed at the ball. She wouldn't engage with him in the end despite her longing, enveloped by pangs of doubt and twinges of embarrassment, but here they were - back in the very space where the unnerving feelings first sowed like divine poetry.

His ghastly appearance set in the profound concern for Remedy, causing her to suppress a gasp. The dark undereye circles, his slouching posture, the lack of shine in his gaze, the stone-cold plate of food before him, and the absence of his mischievous grin that set so well upon his features. All of it. It rattled her to the core, and she instinctively planted herself adjacent to where he sat, dropping her satchel on the food-laden ground as worry consumed her.

"Finn..?" was all Remedy could begin to say, but soon courage mustered more: "Is it okay if I sit here awhile with you?"

Not alone after all.

A shuffle had sounded, then a rustle, like belongings being gathered up. Sounds alone were unreliable witnesses in a place like this, it could be a ghost, a stray pet, a skittish house-elf sweeping up crumbs. He dismissed the meaningless noise and returned to wallow in his swamp of pity and despair.

Then a scrape of wood over stone broke the dread silence and soon after a girl hovered at the edge of his vision. Why couldn't people just leave him alone? Had she always been there or had she slipped in silently? Was it another first-year come to lecture him on where he wasn't permitted to have his mental breakdowns? He scoffed at the thought, but lacked the energy to shoo her away. She stood at a distance still, a slender silhouette in the low light, hazy and indeterminate but too solid to be a ghost, and surely too tall to be a house-elf.

Was she staring at him?

He pushed his plate aside, put his arms length-wise on the table and rested his head on top of the miserable heap. Anyone with a pulse would be able to tell from his aggressive looking away, staring at the wall, that he did not wish to be disturbed or worse, helped.

Light footfalls approached, either hesitant or considerate, perhaps both.

"Finn...?"

He closed his eyes slowly. Please go away.

"Is it okay if I sit here awhile with you?"

Who was it? That voice... Every word was spoken clearly, elegantly, but perhaps not as softly as expected, yet the sound was ageless, neither childish nor mature. Who is it? Who was this unnamed colour in his world of black and white?

Slowly, begrudgingly, he lifted his head and turned it the other way to regard the stranger who had imposed herself upon him. The last person to do so had received a scorching rebuttal, but now he found curiosity instead of anger welling up through his tired, slouched frame.

Ms. Norden?

A faint and fleeting smirk crept across his features, the only sign that somewhere within the hopeless arrangement of skinny limbs, the boy still lived. But by the time she blinked, it would be gone.

His eyes, a muted hazel, lingered too long upon her, flicking this way and that, silently taking the measure of her. Like a sped-up film of a growing flower, his curiosity punched up through fertile soil, sprouted leaves and opened its petals to the sun and wind. He had always prided himself on his ability to get a quick read on people. People were like books—some were open, some were closed, some were heavy, and some were small. Some were dog-eared and worn, some had their secrets scrawled in the margins, and some were neat and unblemished, still smelling faintly of ink and crisp paper.

Remedy Norden was different. She was the Voynich manuscript—one couldn't help but look at her rich illustrations, the mysterious writing that promised secret knowledge, the astronomical diagrams and magic symbols, the illustrations of plants unseen accompanied by words unspoken. It was hard to rip his gaze from her, to return to stubbornly staring at his feet, the last act in his theatrical display where he still pretended that he wanted her gone.

It lasted mere seconds.

He rested his chin on his arms, eyes once again drawn to the strange girl who was so opposite to him. There was a hint of @Evelynn Decipio in her, something poised and reserved, yet lacking the sternness that Evelynn armored herself with. Outwardly, there was little resemblance, her long, straight hair bore no liking to Eve's short, meticulous cut. Maybe there was some of @June Selwyn in there too, shrewdness and ambition captured by almond eyes, the sorting hat had picked up on that too.

At long last he arched a single eyebrow at her. "What are you doing here?"

His dry-rattled inquiry gave her a sliver of dubiety, backing the Slytherin into a momentary state of hesitance. What was Remedy doing here? It was an inscrutable riddle she had also sought to unravel within herself. Her vacillation regarding how to best approach the lion would be fleeting. With a shrug of her cloaked shoulders, the Slytherin would reply: "I lost track of time." If aristocracy had taught Remedy anything, it was how to dance. However, much to her relief, there was no need for performance in this barren chamber.

Her gaze lacked the usual scrutinizing glare behind them, the softened and concerned glint in her eye a rare sight. Remedy had longed for his permission to remain in his vicinity, but Finn's lack of dismissal towards her would sate this need for now. The congealed, colourless mush on his plate would find her eyes, evading having to endure Finn's probing glare that Remedy imagined was there. "I also didn't want you to be alone," she added with a testing breath, "After everything that happened—the ball—it is unsafe."

Whether or not Finn would heed the candor embedded in her words was yet another lingering mystery. She would not begrudge the Gryffindor should Finn rightfully keep his wits about him midst this divine encounter; nothing in their short-lived history would label Remedy as the ally. How long his patience before striking was an uncalculated risk, but her insatiable curiosity would keep Remedy on the edge of her seat. Literally.

Shifting the frigid plate to the duo's side, Remedy heaved a soft sigh as her brown gaze studied Finn's weary eyes, who rested his chin upon folded arms. The loose fist that held up her head would fall to the grimy mahogany table almost hopelessly as Remedy wouldn't find proper words to fill the bruising silence.

"I heard about the stabbing. I'm so sorry that you went through that," the Norden progeny muttered lowly, "I wanted to check in on you sooner. I apologize I didn't."

There was no rightful justification for her prior lack of compassion towards him, therefore the girl wouldn't spew him an excuse. Finn would see right through it anyway, so she'd assume.

A wandering mind reminisced on her near-death encounter with @Evelynn Decipio's animagus form, a solitary speculation if the girls' encounter would be shared among the Lion's Den. Did Finn know of this? Was that why he was silent? The anxiety that crippled her then would haunt her now, in addition to the fear of her truth being revealed, her fear of being taunted.

Her cheeks grew hot, her hands clammy, and her heart drummed against her chest. The following words from her lips nearly made her shudder, spewing out without second thought, regretting it after they touched the air between her and Finn: "You don't have to say anything if you don't want to. I've done nothing to demonstrate my being a friend to you. I understand, truly. I just don't want you to suffer here, alone."

Whereas he might be tempted to quip and fill the silence with anyone else, he found himself quite at ease saying nothing for a while. Her presence, though unusual, making him feel just a little less lonely.

After a short while, Finnegan lifted his head slightly, his posture easing up. There was something disarming about the way Remedy spoke—was she just pretending to care? He squinted at her through the gloom, trying to guess at her motives, but found nothing but earnestness in her carefully chosen words. Strange how someone he hardly knew showed more concern for his well-being than someone he'd spent many hours laughing and practicing charms with.

"At least you remember," he muttered. "Seems everyone else has forgotten." He sat up straighter, his shoulders squaring as they remembered their proper place. "I didn't even get a cool eyepatch out of it," he chuckled darkly. The cold food was given one final, hesitant look before he met her eyes again. "Remedy," her name tasted strange on his lips, "do yourself a favor and stay away from the balls. I'm not the first to get hurt and I doubt I'll be the last."

As she spoke about wanting to check on him sooner, he studied her face with a mixture of curiosity and disbelief. Yet her cheeks had taken on a rosy tint, and her usual composure seemed to waver. Either she was the most deceitful girl he'd ever met or she was being earnest and actually cared. Bex had cared, Eve had cared, Pericles had certainly cared too, but those friendships had come under increasing duress. "You're more of a friend than June ever was," he bemoaned @June Selwyn, "isn't she in the same dormitory as you? She never bothered saying anything about it, she-" he stopped himself there before he said anything else that he might come to regret. "You have nothing to apologize for."

He frowned at seeing her composure falter. She'd always seemed someone who kept herself in check, so what was haunting her? Some memory perhaps? Was she too tied up in the web of accidents that had plagued Hogwarts for years? He reached out across the table, placing his hand briefly on hers. "Are you alright? Is something bothering you?"

When Finn's sardonic chuckle resounded the empty air between them, Remedy wore a half-hearted, mirthless smile in response to his quip about an eyepatch, but it would soon fade as the Slytherin heeded his cryptic words. There was a faraway glint in her eye as haunting memories elapsed in her mind frame after frame, each reminiscence plaguing and tormenting her further and further into her shell.

Remedy's dark gaze lingered upon Finn's when her name was muttered from his lips. Hearing it without the snideness behind it was odd but a welcomed surprise. The lion spoke wisely about avoiding the annually hosted balls, but how could Remedy? Her series of unfortunate events had begun at a ball, but how could Remedy safeguard her loved ones should the Vipress heed his advice?

Helena Rose, a familial Hufflepuff, was nearly a victim of a watery abduction from grindylows at The Festival of Lights—a girl that the Slytherin had lost in the end because of her damned pettiness. In another instance, Helena's elder cousin, @Ulysses Drake, had gotten accosted while spectating a game. By whom? Remedy had not a clue—next, her fated encounter with Eve in the Forbidden Forest. Though the Snake and Lion's meeting had been disarming in the end, staring down death in the guise of the Gryffindor's cougar animagus still tormented her psyche and dreams, reminiscent of internally preparing to surrender to death's kiss or, rather, razor-sharp incisors. Barely a month later, her uncle Willard was brutally murdered in his home.

In an attempt to right Remedy's many wrongs, the Vipress attempted to push aside her "acclaimed" pride to start anew, which would set Remedy front and center of the traumatic events of the Magical Masquerade alongside @Aleksandra Fairbairn, where Finn had gotten hurt. When did the torment begin, and when would the torment end? And how could it, if there was such a way?

Midst her musings, Finn would remark about June sourly. This took the Vipress off guard. Remedy had recalled the kinship between them - Finn's surprise appearance at the Norden-Leveret's auction by the Selwyn family's hand. At the event, June and Finn's hand-holding was not lost upon Remedy's scrutinizing gaze, and from that point, June Selwyn was another victim of Remedy's pettiness.

Lately, there had been an unspoken "truce" between the two snakes, one that lead to very brief interface at the Slytherin Common Room “Rager.” Perhaps the Vipress had too much to drink that lead her to lose her inhibitions, yet the tension would return the following days. It was like most of Remedy's friendships — a fickle thing built on mutual respect, but hardly more.

"June, yeah. She's my dorm-mate," Remedy responded with a nonchalant shrug, "We don't talk much beyond broom sports or assignments."

There had been a lingering desire to press on the matter more, an insatiable curiosity that yearned for crumbs. Still, Finn's abrupt halt while remarking upon the Selwyn progeny was enough to keep Remedy at bay from prying. For now. The girl wouldn't tell June what Finnegan had stated, but made a mental note to inquire later if they should meet again. Remedy hoped they would.

Remedy's gaze dropped when the lion reached across the table and briefly placed his hand on hers. Had this unspoken understanding between them not existed at present, or any of the unfortunate events led her to such a morally ambiguous, scrupulous state, the Vipress would have instinctively pulled away from his touch. She wouldn't; his compassion, albeit odd, was welcoming. There was an internal war in the vestiges of her mind to determine if his compassion was genuine or if this act from Finn was a feigned caring, a facade Remedy often hid behind. She shook these tumultuous thoughts away with a testing breath, taking a leap of faith to trust him. What did she have left to lose?

"I used to think I was cursed. Sometimes, I still think I am," she began with a sigh, "Everyone around me gets hurt. I-I don't know how to stop it," she murmured while meeting his eyes. "I've been so caught up in prejudice about everyone's blood..but now-" the girl had paused, searching the Great Hall while trying to find the proper words to say, "-I'm scared, Finn. Everything that's happened. I-I can't discern who my friends are, who my enemies are. Not when they all look the same."

Her gaze dropped to his hand over hers, realizing that Remedy had now held his hand in her own somewhere midst her rambling.

"I don't feel like I have anyone most days," the Slytherin added with a depressive shake of her head, "There's not many I can rely on these days. But I am appreciative of those whom I can, like you. You've always been true. Genuine. I was blinded by my....beliefs to see that."

Finnegan stared at their joined hands, struck by how easily they had joined; his stubby and warm, hers elegant, light and clammy to the touch. The dim candles overhead caught a strange gleam in his eye as he regarded her.

He found himself leaning forward slightly, drawn in by the way her voice dipped and rose, how her dark eyes seemed to swim with emotion. There was something mesmerizing about watching someone as composed as Remedy let their guard down.

Word by word, the Great Hall shrunk around them until it felt like they were the only two people left in the castle, maybe even the world. It was mad, really. Here sat Remedy Norden—proper, pureblood Remedy Norden—confiding in him about feeling alone, about being afraid.

"I don't feel like I have anyone most days

"I'll be there," he said softly, giving her a quick squeeze before he retreated his hand. "You're far braver than you think, Remedy, and I don't just mean that time you stood up to me. I mean... well, it takes heart to admit when you've been wrong about something. Most people just dig their heels in deeper." He offered her a small, crooked smile. "You're much better than that. And you're not cursed, Remedy. Bad things happen to good people all the time, no matter if you meant well, no matter if you did the right thing, some people @Aamon Athanatos are just incapable of being grateful."

It all tasted so strange in his mouth, the things he was telling her. Just moments ago he had been wallowing in his own guilt and now he was giving out advice and consoling her? There was something about her vulnerability that made him want to be stronger, better, to sit a little straighter, to help her through her doubts.

Her admission about her changed beliefs had stirred something in him. She'd called him genuine, true, but he was undeserving. While she was being honest about her mistakes, he still carried his own dark secrets.

He drew in a shaky breath and cast a weary glance over his shoulder, ensuring once more that they were well and truly alone. Then he leaned in close across the table and quietly beckoned her to lean in too, so he could whisper into her ear. "I have made mistakes too, Remedy. I got in with some bad people..." For a short while she would hear nothing but him holding his breath, trying to find the right words. How exactly where you supposed to go about telling someone you met one of the most famous and influential wizards in living history?

"I met Thaddeus Athanatos..." There was a gulp there and for perhaps the first time, Remedy might notice true fear in his voice, raw and real, thinning out his voice. "...he doesn't like me very much. I made a very bad mistake..."

He leaned back then and now she would find herself staring in some kind of mirror. To her he would seem just like she had to him: strangely vulnerable, out of his depth, frightened and alone.

"I'd tell you more, but not here... I know a place though, Seventh Floor, it's safe there, at least I think it is. But I have to warn you Remedy, if I tell you what I know, why you might think you're cursed, but why I know you're not, if I tell you that, there won't be any turning back from it. Not ever. We're not the only ones getting hurt, and it's no coincidence." He got up then, dusted himself off and would wait only a few moments should Remedy decide to follow him to the Seventh Floor. "You don't have to come Remedy, in fact, if you're as smart as I think you are, you'd do well to choose happy ignorance."

This fateful reunion of herself and the enigmatic Gryffindor was a far cry from what the Vipress had envisioned. Remedy could not ignore the internal twinges of regret of how pitiful she had likely appeared between their sharings; her damned emotions besting her, reducing the hapless girl away from the perfect picture-of-propriety girl who held an air of fiery ambition, unwavering confidence, an unquenchable thirst. Was she indeed any of those things? Had the Slytherin lied to herself all along? Would Finnegan now see Remedy as weak, or simply human?

Gently squeezing her hand, he said, "I'll be there,"

There was a turning point in the internal war brewing now. Remedy pushed these self-deprecating thoughts aside, simply willing herself to grant the following events to flow naturally: no deception, manipulation, or masks, regardless of how skillfully the snake wore them. His crooked smile was infectious, a simple smile of relief donning her countenance now as Finn kindly consoled her. There was a newfound strength in her posture as she leaned in at his beckoning, a certain gleam in her eyes—a rare thing for Remedy to feel so validated and free.

His hot breath would tickle her ear as he whispered: "I have made mistakes too, Remedy. I got in with some bad people..." It was then that her dark gaze would narrow, not accusingly, but struck in confusion. An inquisitive mind would scour the depths of her mind for memories of any seedlings containing possible gossip gleaned or knowledge acquired of whom the "bad people" the lion could be referring to. Then, it would click: The Daily Prophet. The Vipress recalled his name in typewriter font next to Gideon Athanatos', Finnegan's PDA with the youngest heir of the illustrious Athanatos family. Aside from her fluctuating episodic discrimination regarding blood purity, Remedy indeed had no other opinions about his romantic affairs.

"I met Thaddeus Athanatos...he doesn't like me very much. I made a very bad mistake..."

A bad mistake—was it kissing Giddeon? Or was there something more in the woven tale he shared?

Turning to the lion, she found a mirror of herself—somber, afraid, vulnerable, and alone. She hesitantly leaned back when Finn did, a white-knuckle grip upon the table's edge as she heeded his words intently, chewing and meditating on them. A new, darkened, concerned countenance weighed upon her as her brown gaze never left his. The girl was unsure what to feel inside: relief that Remedy wasn't cursed after all or profound dread that it was no coincidence that others were getting hurt, and Finn had an inkling as to why. She stayed silent for a while, with the exception of heaving a weighted, worrisome sigh as though the girl had been holding her breath all this time. Perhaps she had been.

As Finn departed from the mahogany Gryffindor long table and dusted his Gryffindor robes, her gaze found her residence upon the frigid and congealed mush on his plate. It was the only factual evidence of this encounter that Remedy would soon not forget. His words captured her attention once more: "You don't have to come Remedy, in fact, if you're as smart as I think you are, you'd do well to choose happy ignorance."

Happy ignorance was a fickle thing, and turning a blind eye would make Remedy no better than the "bad people" Finnegan had dealings with. Not to mention the allure of insider knowledge of the Athanatos family, a family name riddled with wealth, power, and controversy in headlines. She would ponder if there were any overlapping connections between her family and theirs; it was likely the Norden-Leveret genealogy would not yet reach the prominence of the Athanatos, yet Remedy would not be astonished if her father especially would yearn for it.

Cautionary words muttered from his lips tumulted in her mind, pulling her which way and that knowledgeable her life would indeed be changed: "If I tell you, there won't be any turning back from it. Not ever."

Was the Vipress to be a sheep, feeble, conquered, and blissfully ignorant? Or a wolf, loyal, a conqueror, and strong?

Contemplating a moment more, her insatiable curiosity and ambition would win the day, luring Remedy to vow herself to him soundlessly. Once retrieving her leather satchel from the ground, Remedy would rise to her feet with an assuring nod and join him on the Seventh Floor. They were frightened and vulnerable but not alone.

Not anymore.
