Emily felt like she was teetering on the fence far too much to give Tesla the solution she was looking for. Between all the kind of ideas she was trying to propose and then instantly retracting them... Emily was surprised Tesla hadn't lost her patience with her. It really did all boil down to how much Emily knew about her werewolf peers and to a grand total of no one, she understood very little.
Even hearing Tesla summarise the plan she had in mind (in an admittedly neater package than Emily did) made the younger Huffie swallow anxiously. People already thought Emily to be slightly mad when it came to ambitious ideas - it was probably safe to say that Tesla just might be another name to add to the ever increasing list.
That would be a bridge that the two of them would come to in a minute. Right now, Tesla was bringing up a point that Emily shamefully didn't think of before.
"The wolfsbane...! That didn't even cross my mind until now, though that might be because I didn't think something so crucial to werewolves was so... Rare, in hindsight. I thought that wolfsbane could never run out or go scarce since it sounds like lycanthropy is a much bigger deal among the wizarding community than it sounded before half-humans got so much attention recently. Now that I've said it, I hope you all have enough for while you're at Hogwarts...! And what about at home? Is there enough for you during the holidays?"
Every attempt at a solution was met with another worry to add to the mix, it seemed. Not only that, but Emily was starting to get more silently worked up and worried over Tesla's wellbeing. Not just her but all the other werewolf students, for they were just as affected as Tesla would be.
"I suppose if you had a lot of space or knew a secluded area, transformations wouldn't feel like walking on eggshells. Attract so much attention, I mean. There'd be space to observe the change but also interact under the right conditions. For wizard-born students that's possibly easier to do, what with spells for precautions. For Muggle-born students like me, there's not really an awful lot werewolves can do about that though, is there? Under the circumstances... But that's all just my speculation. I don't really know if that's what it's like or not..."

Tes was obviously relieved when Emily continued discussing her ideas with her, although she was beginning to realize that she may be overwhelming the poor girl. After all, the way she was talking, it didn't really sound like anyone had listened to her before. Tes herself could understand that, and even if Emily's plans weren't super fleshed out, they were better than anything she'd come up with herself.
"The good news is that Hogwarts brews its own potions, so there's always enough for all the werewolves in the school. They also send us home with them, since the expectation is that we always have to take them, even when we're not here. I don't know why anyone would not want to take them, but it's something the school has us do. Aside from that, my family has been very careful about keeping enough potions for several moon cycles, as well as spares, after my accident. Unfortunately, once you're out of school, they get expensive, and it can be hard too to get them discreetly. They're too difficult to brew at home with basic setups. Some people hide that they're werewolves so they can keep their jobs, and don't want anyone knowing, which makes them even harder to source. Besides, we have to take the potions every night for a week leading up to a full moon! That really adds up, not to mention the fact that most werewolves can't keep a solid job because of their condition," Tes explained, thinking of her own experiences with her mothers budgeting just for her momma, and their werewolf friends that sometimes came by asking for help with their own potions when times were tough.
As for the topic of transformations, that was something she knew could be a pleasant experience and was happy to share more about. "Honestly, transformations aren't too scary if you're used to them or go through them with someone else. My momma has been a werewolf since she was a kid, so I wasn't ever scared when she'd go for an hour or two into the fields near our house and come back as a wolf that was ready to eat snacks, play ball, and sleep on the couch. I was turned four years ago, and since then we go and shift together outside in the grass and then play and run around with mum and our dog," Tes's face was lit up with longing for these transformations at home, and she grew gloomy as she continued, "Unfortunately, most people don't get that. It's been normal for generations for people to get locked away for their shifts, even though it's not necessary as long as wolfsbane is taken properly. That's usually the case for muggle-born people, or ones from more traditional families. Heck, Hogwarts is a very progressive school, and they lock us all away in an abandoned building every month. It really makes you feel like a monster, especially when your own family is so afraid of you that they put you in a room where they can't hear you howling," before she could go down the path of her worst full moon, she shakes herself out of it and shrugs slightly.
"It's hard to convince others you're not a monster, when we sometimes have a hard time believing it ourselves. It's just strange, because nobody blinks at an animagus walking around as a canine, but we're shamed for the same thing! I'm sorry for just complaining about all of this, instead of trying to come up with more solutions," Tes muttered as she trailed off, hoping she hadn't scared Emily off with her troubles. She just hadn't run into a scenario where she was speaking to someone who wasn't a wolf just like her who already understood or trying to express that she was still proud to be a werewolf and didn't mind it when convincing people it was okay. It was surprisingly relieving, not having to keep up her boundless positivity, and not having to compare to the experience of others in her same situation.

This was a doozy of a post! Sorry it got so long. Got a little bit carried away with how much I love lycanthropy being an allegory for how people treat disabled or LGBT people...

Emily couldn't stress enough how humbled she was by Tesla and her story. If not for her, listening and processing something like this - as sensitive as it definitely was - would have been a lot more difficult had Emily found someone else to do this. If she found someone who was a lot more self conscious about this then her efforts would have been fruitless.
Thank goodness for Tesla's open mind and willingness for positive change, even if it did require a bit of persuasion at the beginning.
For all that she could nitpick about the school over it's shortcomings for a more progressive stance on human-halfbreed socialising, Emily was relieved to hear that they had the foresight to stock up continuously on wolfsbane for the afflicted students.
However, outside of school remained an issue which Tesla had just confirmed. "Discreet, you say... And expensive? The latter I can understand, but I thought wolfsbane ought to be something that should be universally available. Kind of like a repeat prescription at a chemist... Always there for when people need it. People shouldn't have to go to such ridiculous or even illegal lengths just to get something to help them outside of school, or even in general."
Which itself raised a whole new concern. Ordinarily medicine can be expensive to produce but if the resources are there, why should they be so hard to get someone's hands on? Especially if they have to take it as often as they do as Tesla had explained.
She paid close attention as Tesla went into detail about her transformations. She felt assurance in some regards but worried over the rest. "I can definitely see how a wide space can be great for your shifts! It sounds even better that you can carry on as normal when you've taken wolfsbane, being able to interact with your family despite the new form. To me, that's a sign of remaining "human" despite being in a different body, for a lack of a better explanation. So I'm quite shocked to hear that Hogwarts would just lock you all up like that..."
That didn't sound too pleasant, being all cramped together in there like sardines. Hypothetically if a student did forget to take wolfsbane, surely they would get aggressive with the ones that did take it. Emily was almost too afraid to ask if that was a possibility.
That sounded like a good place to jump from.
"Alright!" Emily's palm and knuckle met in a "eureka" moment. "Sounds like that's something we can advocate for the other werewolves in the school... A place that's not some cramped room. With how large the campus is, there's bound to be somewhere for you all to run around without causing any problems. Heck, if we could just show some of the more sceptical students that werewolves are in control, then that might shift opinions on locking you up...!"
If the theory would be successful, the only way to test it would be for someone like Tesla to demonstrate, which Emily would happily endorse with her support. The one and only obstacle, as big as it was, was how they could persuade the rest of the school to try out such methods...

Tes nodded, rolling her eyes in annoyance just at the thought of how inaccessible the wolfsbane was. "Honestly, it feels like the wizarding world forces werewolves into the stereotypes they put them in. Unemployed dirty animals that lose control and hunt humans in the woods once per month. It's almost like when people can't get jobs or homes, they're stuck in that situation not being able to buy oodles of wolfsbane," she huffed, slowly letting out a breath as she wound herself down, hoping her cheeks weren't burning as red with frustration as they felt.
Moving to the more pleasant topics of the shifts that Tes longed for, she nodded eagerly. "Absolutely! I mean, it's a well-known fact for anyone associated with us wolves that we completely retain our human minds in shifts. In fact, some people willingly avoid the wolfsbane to avoid it, because then they have to acknowledge what they are in the moment. I think it's a sign that the curse is kinda like a lot of muggle conditions. It needs to be managed and is a bit of a bummer, but it doesn't turn us into something we're not!" grinned, Emily's enthusiasm infectious, "Besides, it's pretty dang cool to experience the world as a huge wolf sometimes. You can smell and see so much and run super-duper fast! Without the stigma, I don't think Hogwarts would lock us up. It's probably for the comfort of parents and other students, but that's not super fair to us, is it."
She nodded in agreement at Emily's suggestion, subconsciously fiddling with the bandana on her wrist as she thought about what she and Emily could do. She realized that she didn't necessarily need to keep it on now Emily knew what she was, so she took it off to refold just for something to do with her hands. She didn't mind her surprisingly neat scars being on display, and she found herself worked up with all her pacing and excitement, so it was nice to not have the warm flannel right against her skin.
"I'm not sure they'll let us just run around the campus or the forest, since that would put our own safety at risk, but at the very least maybe we can renovate the shack. I mean, it's just full of rotting furniture and boarded up windows. Surely Hogwarts could afford some rugs at the very least," she paused to tie her bandana back on, tapping her fingers on her wrist in thought, "Maybe we can get some teachers to supervise though, and get together a group of willing students, werewolves and otherwise, to gather for a full moon to experience it together. That way, we may get more freedom in the long run. Barring that, we could always do something outside of school over a break; to generate more sympathy so we have a better basis than just us two... I know my momma would be against it, but my mum should be happy to supervise if it means improving werewolf relations at school. Maybe we could talk to Professor Iwasaki if something like that would even be possible? I mean, I know plenty of werewolves and their immediate family that spend shifts together, but I've never heard of a group getting together just to show how the shift works."
Pacing done for the moment, she hopped back up on the desk she'd sat on when she'd come into the room, heedless of the dust covering her clothes. She leaned eagerly towards Emily, enjoying this process of throwing ideas back and forth.

Tesla confirmed what Emily already predicted. To levy for lycanthropic students to run around the grounds with their minds in tact was a pretty big ask given the state of affairs around them. However, the fact that Tesla was still on board in spite of that was a show of resilience and optimism that Emily had spent too long waiting to see in someone that wasn't herself.
"No matter how werewolves cope with they're transitions... Hopefully safely in every case... I think it's brave of them either way to acknowledge what's inside them. And from what you've just said, being a werewolf doesn't need to inherently mean it's a bad thing! I'd love to be able to run as fast as you lot! she joked light-heartedly.
"That being said, I think I have a better understanding of the risks when wolfsbane is removed... I wouldn't blame the teachers if they refused the proposal of letting you guys stretch your legs outside of some crammed space. After all, like any dog, they need to be walked and run. Otherwise, they're no different than restless pets."
She placed a curled finger on her chin. With a staple routine having been in place for so long, the thought of changing it would both be jarring and suspicious for the staff to come round to. There was no guarantee that they would even want to consider an alternative that didn't involve werewolves packed away like rabid dogs.
But Tesla wasn't put off by that possibility, which enthused Emily all the more.
"I see what you're saying..." Emily said, nodding along to Tesla's suggestion. "Supervision could be useful for the staff to gauge the level of safety of letting their werewolf students run free in a designated environment... And I agree that Professor Iwasaki would be the best person to inquire of this! As a veteran werewolf, he must be able to understand where we're coming from!"
She placed a friendly hand over Tesla's as they sat together, smiling at her with brimming hope.
"You have my word Tesla that we'll find a way to make it better for you and those like you. After everything you guys have been subjugated to, this is the least of what I can try to make the world better for you!"

Tes grinned at Emily's comparison of werewolves to dogs. She wasn't wrong, and there was a reason she spent her full moons running with her family's golden retriever, but she couldn't help but feel like most werewolves wouldn't appreciate being compaired to a high energy pet. Good thing she wasn't most wolves, and Emily's positive and joking view could easily help remove some tension in a situation like this.
She shifted restlessly, legs swinging and spare hand tapping a rhythm out onto the desk. "I trust you'll do your best! I'll do everything I can to be right alongside you on this too. I mean, improving lives for half creatures has been my goal for a while, and it just feels like such a lonely path!" she paused, looking around briefly, "Ah, do we have any paper or anything? I'd like to write down what we're gonna do, so there's no chance I'll forget it. It sounds like goal number one is talk to Professor Iwasaki and try to work something out at Hogwarts, and if that doesn't work the second goal will be sending my mums an owl to see if we can't work something out over the summer instead!"
She had the crumpled up note still in her pocket, but no ink... With excited energy vibrating through her, Tes just had to hope Emily would either be able to write her a list of what she needed to do, or be find handling most of the logistics herself as they inevitably slip from Tes's mind.

Hearing Tesla's backing for Emily's proposition had the latter beaming in hope. Now that Tesla was on board, Emily was going to make indubitably sure she didn't let her down, even if the process itself were to be long and tedious. No doubt it would be after all they've talked about, most of which confirming Emily's concerns.
Going from simple Housemates to now friendly allies, Emily wanted to make it known to Tesla that she was doing this to truly help her. The life of a werewolf sounded needlessly difficult given the restrictions and stereotypes, so if Emily could follow through and provide comfort to change that, she would stick with it through thick and thin. Not just for Tesla but for all her werewolf peers, whoever they secretly were.
And if that road could be spread to other half creatures, then even better!
"I suppose, given the magnitude of the current sentiment around the school, we should start small. Most of the school seem fine with half-beings but the small pocket of those against them is still powerful to an effect... They'll look for anything, even something minor, to try and argue against them."
Then Tesla mentioned paper. Good point! Since they were taking this seriously, it wouldn't help to be organised. Ah. But Emily didn't bring any materials with her. Well, she had a pen. But no paper.
A clean tissue will do!
"Okay!" She took the pen out and lightly traced a few words along the tissue. "We'll bring our idea forward to Professor Iwasaki privately... And you can ask your folks about organising something between us over the holidays if that goes sideways... In the meantime, we can secretly affirm our support for half-humans around the school." She tapped the top of her pen against her chin.
"Flyers and propaganda might work, though it's rather cliché... And it won't make much a difference if we just stand in the middle of the room and chant either..."
She looked to Tesla. "But we would want to do something that rouses support without outing you and your peers as werewolves or otherwise. Assuming you want that secret kept to yourselves, which I'm sure you do."
Their howling will have turned a few suspicious heads in their direction. Maybe less so towards Emily since she was already quite set in her views to begin with, most of which the school could guess, if not tell. If people weren't thinking Tesla was a werewolf now, they surely would if they did another "public" stunt.
The "Misdirection and Camouflage" approach would be their best bet at the minute. The question was how.

Tes nodded thoughtfully, leaning over to watch as Emily started scribbling out some notes on a tissue. She was momentarily distracted as she was, like usual, impressed by the convenience of muggle pens over quills, before coming back to the task at hand.
"I suppose with the pocket that are against half-beings, anyone who wants to attend, wolf or not would probably like to be anonymous. We should maybe make it a tad bit difficult to attend, to try to deter anyone who might have bad intentions. Not too difficult though, since we want to encourage people to come," she trailed off thoughtfully, humming and tapping her chin, "I think starting with a meeting at my family's place would be a decent middle ground for that, since people would have to floo or drive in to come, but there wouldn't be any crazy secret codes to have to come or something like that. Maybe we'll start there and then start bugging the professors!"
Tes tilted her head, nodding along thoughtfully to all of Emily's suggestions, resuming her slow pacing as she thought about the best options. "I'm alright with my secret getting out, but preferably in a quieter setting, and not by chanting in the middle of the Great Hall... I think posters, flyers, and word of mouth would probably be best. I'll talk to all my friends and ask the other werewolves to talk to all their friends, and you can invite everyone you know as well!"
Tes turned to Emily, nodding resolutely and putting her hands on her hips. "Okay! I think we've got a pretty solid plan. Talk to the professors, plan to have a meeting at my farm either way, and start putting out flyers! This shouldn't be too tough at all. Hopefully." Tes grinned sheepishly, hoping her excitement was contagious, and that she wasn't being too optimistic, and things would turn out significantly harder than her simple summary made them sound.

Emily blotted and scrawled a few words across her tissue, jotting things down that stood out to her whilst Tesla listed her ideas. Going by Tesla's demeanour, it sounded like it wasn't the first time Tesla had considered a plan of action for her fellow lycanthropic peers. Who could blame her honestly? Emily could only imagine what such a lifestyle was like. Trying hard enough to imagine going through it herself, Emily was sure she would've gone mad.
Emily nodded, a thoughtful smile stretching farther across her lips as she listened to Tesla's suggestion. "I quite like the sound of that. Organising a casual gathering sounds like the right way to go. To see you all in a neutral space as yourselves gives everyone the opportunity to see you in a casual environment. It means they can get to know you before and after the... um... The change". Emily wasn't sure what to call it but surely Tesla knew what she was getting at.
"Your idea sounds great! Besides, humans and werewolves mingling outside of school shouldn't have any bearing on the school if its done under controlled circumstances... It might take some warming up from some of the stronger-opinionated students but showing them the process for you lot and how it feels will be an eye-opener. After all, hearing face value about transforming in a confined space doesn't really educate others on how hard it must actually be for you all."
Emily affirmed her assumptions of Tesla's secret getting out with another nod. "In that case, talking openly about it quietly might be a good start. We can start with whom we all trust the most. Close friends, clubmates... And practically anyone who can keep a secret for sake of formality. Talking about it like its nothing among trusted friends is better than walking on eggshells with the whole school. That way, others will understand its a natural process and be more aware of what goes on behind the scenes, which is where the gathering at your estate comes in!"
Emily carved a few more scribbly words onto the tissue. There was the odd tear or two down the sides but it made do! It filled up nicely with black ink. The sign of brain wrinkling and eager scrawls.
"Okie dokie! Leave it with me about spreading the word!" she beamed at Tesla. "I've already got a name or two in mind that can help us out. And once we've gathered some numbers, we'll think about getting the staff involved".
Her eyes sparkled hopefully at Tesla. "I've a good feeling about this! I can already feel it!"
She neatly packed away her tissue and pen before heading towards the door. She flashed a wink at Tesla.
"Everything's going to work out, Tesla. Just hang in there some more. Soon, everyone's going to realise just how much more credit werewolves deserve!"

Tes grinned back as she squinted at what Emily had written on the napkin. It was a bit torn, and she hoped Emily could read it better than she could, but considering her usual struggle to read without dedicating one hundred percent of her mind to it, she'd just have to trust in Emily's ability.
"I think this is going to go great! Maybe a bit tough, but I'm hoping that by making it at my place it'll keep people who just want to rile up trouble from coming. Plus my mums will be there to help regulate things as well!" glancing back at the napkin she stretched as she made her way to the door with Emily, "I'll trust you to remember everything we talked about! I'll focus on what I can really do. First I'll send a letter to momma to make sure everyone's on board, and then I'll start reaching out to the other wolves on campus! I'll just have to pick a full moon when I can maybe try to be a bit more encouraging... Hm, maybe chamomile tea will help convince them to come..."
She nodded with determination, holding open the door for Emily and stepping out into the hallway. "You've got no idea how much help this is going to be! This is going to work out great for the both of us, I can feel it!" Doing a joyful fist pump, she turned to make her way down the hallway. Time to send her letters before they could slip her mind.
