Entering the hall was like entering a dream, it was unlike anything she had imagined in all the best ways. She had heard countless stories from her Fathers time at Hogwarts but he never seemed to do its beauty justice.

As the headmaster had ended his speech and the first student's names had started to be called, Elizabeth started to get nervous.

Her father was a Ravenclaw, and a proud one at that. Most would call him snobbish for thinking it was the best house but he called it pride. Elzabeth wanted that, she wanted to be able to call Ravenclaw her home.

The crowd of first years started to dwindle down, soon she would be next.

"Elzabeth Gillan!" Her name echoed down the grand room. She seemed to be frozen with shock for a moment before the other students cheering knocked her out of it.

With a few shakey steps, she made her way to the sorting hat and took a seat on the stool. As soon as the had made contact with her head it started to mutter.

"Interesting, A half-blood. You thurst for more information . . . I see."

Elzabeths heart pounded, she found herself wanting to be in Ravenclaw more than ever now.

"Hmmm, tricky, tricky indeed." The hat went silent for a moment but for Elzabeth, it felt like an eternity.

"I better go with . . . Ravenclaw!"

I instantly smiled, my heart swelling with happiness. The table full of students dressed in blue and back erupted into cheers. I waited for the hat to be lifted off of my head before bounding over to the table, taking a seat in the nearest open spot.

This was going to be a good year.

Alex stepped off the train and looked up at the large castle that was Hogwarts. With a slight shrug of his shoulders he stepped forward with the crowd of chattering students going on and on about how excited they were to be sorted, what it would be like, how they couldn't wait to blah blah blah. Alex tuned them out and looked around the great hall as he was ushered in. It was larger than he had anticipated and he was curious what the giant hourglasses were for and how difficult it was to make thousands of candles float. The most curious sight though was some ratty old hat sitting on stool, was that supposed to be Merlin's old hat or something? was Merlin real? questions for another time.

Alex sat, leaning back, as he watched different students being called forward and the hat placed on their head. the hat eventually would call out GRYFFIN-something or HUFFLE-whatever so he figured that the hat was some kind of magical object that determined your house. Something else he didn't expect. finally

Alex Moore!

With a slight sigh he pushed himself to his feet and he walked forward and sat on the stool, and had the hat placed on his head.

Ahhh. Aren't you the interesting one. there is little you miss isn't there. Inquisitive and sharp mind...but you like power don't you? You liked that look of fear, you desire to be stronger at any cost. There is potential if you had the correct environment to grow within. Better be...

Slytherin!

Alex stood as the Hat was taken off his head and he saw the Green and Silver clad students cheer and clap. He slid his hands into his jacket pocket and made his way to the table his new house mates were siting at. Despite the ones speaking to him and the claps on his back Alex was focused intently on the words of the hat. Potential...need for the right environment. Interesting.

'Ferguson, Cato'

Cato grinned as he heard his name and stood up. He had been feeling confident about attending Hogwarts, and that feeling had continued through the other's sorting ceremony. But now it came to him, he felt like his chest was tightening, unable to breath.

'Ferguson!'

The repetition of his name startled him out of his panic, and he shakily walked over to the sorting hat. He wondered what house he would be put in. Certainly not Gryffindor, his near panic attack had removed any possibility of being sorted into the 'bold' house.

He doubted he would make it into Ravenclaw, as when he had been in school he hadn't been anywhere near the top of the class. He wasn't stupid, and had consistantly managed to achieve grades slightly above average, yet that hadn't come naturally to him, he had to try extremely hard. He couldn't see himself as being in the 'Sweet' house, either.

Maybe I'll be considered 'cunning'.

Cato sat on the chair and felt the hat being placed over his head.

'Well, well, well... I can see that you are interested in learning, yet for some reason you feel like you are unable to better yourself. You're a curious, cunning young boy, and although you try to give off an air of confidence your heart is filled with self doubt.'

Cato wondered how the sorting had could possibly know so much about him. Which houses had his mother and father been sorted into?

'Ah, curious about your parents, are you? When your father sat on this chair it was a simple decision, Slytherin. Your mother, like you, was a bit harder to sort... Decisions, decisions, I think you'll do best in RAVENCLAW!'

Cato was shocked. He didn't think that he would be very good in Ravenclaw, and was almost certain he would be the bottom student in Ravenclaw for every lesson.

"Ables, Hope."

Hope snapped out of her trance at the sound of her name being called and quickly made her way over to the Sorting Hat, excitement coursing through her. She had a small smile, and unlike most, seemed to hold not much nervousness at all.

As the hat was placed on top of her head, Hope's mind seemed to wander, as per usual, and she couldn't help but think on what house she would be. Her father had thought she would be Hufflepuff or Gryffindor, but after learning of all the houses her mother was certain she'd be Ravenclaw. Hope smiled at the thought of her parents, and reminded herself to owl them when she had time.

She was pulled out of her train of thought by the sound of a voice.

"Hm... how peculiar. Very curious... A love for learning and knowledge... with a cluttered mind. Very intelligent, yet unable to focus on something for too long..."

Hope couldn't but fluster slightly at all of the things he was revealing. She knew it was true, but it was strange to have it put out there.

"You clearly have the impulse and willingness of a Gryffindow, and the loving heart of a Hufflepuff... You only wants what is best for those you care about... very loyal..."

She could tell he was getting close, and her heart sped up slightly.

"Yes... well... I suppose it's gotta be.... RAVENCLAW!"

A loud cheer erupted from the Ravenclaw table, and Hope gave a wide smile. Her mother had unsurprisingly been right, and she was looking forward to spending the rest of her school career with her new housemates...no, family.

Of the very few things Gran had mentioned about Hogwarts, the sorting ceremony was something that burned in Lorelai's thoughts. "The house you are given will help shape you to the one you are meant to become," she had said.

All of it confused Lorelai completely. How was a hat meant to know what shaping she needed to become the person she was meant to be? It hadn't seemed to have much affect on her Gran, who was apparently a courageous Gryffindor at one point, yet seemed scared to use any magic in the slightest. Had Gran been different when she was younger? And if so, what had caused the change? Had the hat known she would change?

Far too many questions buzzed the Lorelai's mind.

"Lorelai Wik," the voice rang out.

All of a sudden her throat seized up. Her muscles seemed locked into place. It had all seemed very well and good watching other children be called to the front, but to then be called herself? In front of the whole room of people no less?

She forced her legs into motion and wrapped her arms about herself to stop from falling apart. The hat flicked and twitched like a wild thing. Did it ever fall off anyone's head?

"Hurry girl," it snapped.

She hurried. The hat felt strange on her head. Too heavy.

"You're easy," it told her.

She frowned. How could the hat decide something was easy, when she didn't know where she'd belong herself.

"You are a mirror for yourself," it continued. "Kind and giving, yet selfish. Courageous, while fearful. Honest, and a bender of truths. Curious, quick to learn, and naive. Despite all that, you're a hard worker who's full of warmth, loyalty, and trustworthiness. Lorelai Wik, you belong in Hufflepuff!"

A cheer went up from Hufflepuff's table, and Lorelai felt a blush rising to her cheeks. So many pairs of eyes were watching her, and there was definitely a part of her that wanted to shrink away. Instead, there was a new little flame burning inside her. She belonged to Hufflepuff. Finally, she belonged to the magical world.

Lorelai gave a lopsided goofy grin as she bravely walked to her table and found a seat. As she cheered on the other new Hufflepuff's, a word sat plainly in her mind and in her heart:

Home.

As the Headmaster spoke, Victoria’s wide green eyes darted around the room. Her heart filled with joy, her stomach filled with butterflies. Having been in summer camp for the last month, Victoria had seen the castle itself, but she had never been in the great hall or any of the castle’s corridors, as she had yet to have been sorted. An adventurous girl, being sorted into a Hogwarts house had always been one of the adventures Victoria looked most forward to.

Although Victoria’s parents were both fully magical, they lived in a part of Ireland that did not have a lot of magic and felt that their two children should see as much of the muggle world as they could before their eleventh birthdays. They did not teach their daughters magic and they did not often speak of their times at Hogwarts. However, the sorting ceremony was an event Victoria and her sister heard of often from her parents. It had clearly made a huge impression on them both. As such, and as it was one of the only real things she knew about Hogwarts, ideas of what it would be like danced in her head time and time again since the first she had heard of it. So far, everything about it fully exceeded her expectations. Being here for summer camp had shown her some magic that she had never seen, but it was nothing like the things she was already witnessing in her first moments in the great hall. Friendly ghosts floated by, candles hung in the air, and the portraits were talking to each other. This was honestly like a dream come true.

“MCGREGOR!” a voice suddenly bellowed out from the front of the room. The small red-head had been stuck in her own head, but instantly was back in reality once the hat shouted for her. That is, if you could call this reality. She wasn’t sure, as it hadn’t fully sunk in to her that all of this was real. Her heart raced as she slid down the aisle, through the sea of people. All eyes in the entire hall were glued to her, and there must have been a thousand of them. None of this made Victoria nervous, however. All she cared about now was finding out which of the four magnificent houses she would spend the rest of her seven years in – and really, the rest of her life.

Turning around to face the crowd of children before her, Victoria sat down in the sorting chair. The professor that looked over the hat came by and placed the hat on top of Victoria’s head.

“Oh, this is quite simple really,” the hat began. Victoria didn’t know much about any of the houses, so she couldn’t at all predict where the hat would place her. “You are very loyal, like a Hufflepuff. You are also very studious and seem to be wise, like a Ravenclaw. I can even see parts of you that would fit in with the Slytherins. However, it is adventure that drives you and it is adventure that you value. Therefore, you will be in…GRYFFINDOR!”

Victoria beamed as all the Gryffindors instantly began cheering. The rest of the room clapped as well, but it was nothing over the roar of her new family. The professor picked up the hat and congratulated Victoria as she skirted by her, eagerly racing towards the table that held her future friends and new family.

[quote]Although this wasn't the first time she'd seen a castle—a few trips to Disney World made sure of that—this was the first time Demeigh had been inside one, an actual one. It was so different in so many ways, from how more realistic and daunting it was than a castle made to please the eyes of nine year olds. Eleven year old Demeigh wasn't much older than that but being inside a castle old as dirt, and being told that she would take residence there for seven years, made her feel... different.

Walking through the entrance of the castle, Demeigh felt a strange sensation, like walking through a feather-like veil that seemed to pull at her but only for a fraction of a second. She wondered, conjuring up information about Hogwarts, if this was the power of the magic that protected the school. She looked around, also wondering if anyone else had sensed the magic but figured that most of them were probably so used to being surrounded by magic that they'd given it no second thought.

Her mind went back to the main emotion that her adrenaline was fueled by: her anxiety. Two years of Muggle-to-Wizard School—also known as Mizzary School, or Mizz for short—did not seem to prepare her for stepping through the grand doors of Hogwarts. It was as if now she had fully realize that that actually real, and that she was a witch, something she couldn't change, if she even wanted to.

Demeigh followed along with the other first-years, a decent-sized group of kids who were all looking around anxiously. Well, some looked smug, some looked bored, some looked excited while others looked down-right terrified. At the moment she didn't really care about how she was feeling, she was too busy looking around. According to what she remembered reading, they were gathered in the Entrance Hall. Before them was a humongous staircase, wide as two or three elephants standing side-by-side.

The walls were covered with decorations, presumably art related to the school. Demeigh had left her glasses in her suitcase—which she really hoped was in the dorm she was supposed to be sleeping in—so she couldn't make out the paintings but she was soon distracted by their guide who was leading them towards a doorway, one that lead to the Grand Hall.

Excitement spiked inside her, as if she'd gulped down five energy drinks in one sitting. On the outside she seemed calm, like this was something she saw and went through everyday, even casually sliding a strand of hair behind her ear in the most unbothered way.

But inside her mind was blasting with the chorus of chaos, pelting herself with questions and statements she could barely process.

“What's it like inside?”
"Will anyone like me here?"
"What if I'm not even really magic?"
"The food better be good."
"When can we change out of this robes? Now?"
"Why is that guy looking at me? Am I breaking out?"
"What happens if there's an earthquake?"
"Am I really a witch?"
"The food better not be processed...I'm freaking vegan!"

But all of that began to dissipate as they finally walked into the Great Hall. They were greeted by the Headmaster, whose name was Lear. She wondered if she'd ever get to know him or they'd have that random student and teacher acknowledgement, the one where they just respect that each other exist. She proceeded to nod at him as she stepped pass him but she immediately looked straight down, avoiding the eyes of the students sitting down around them.

Demeigh began to focus on the fact that she was going to sorted into one of the colors that themed each table. Her past witch teacher had explained that it was based mostly on your personality, and what made up you. Some people got into the same one as their family member but she couldn't use that. She felt like focusing on the values of one House as the Hat lay on her head would help but she couldn't even think clearly at the moment.

She stood with the other students, listening to the speech and then the Hat's song. Then she waited patiently as the other students were sorted. Ease slowly ebbed it's way back into. She would reflect on it later that night but all of this worry was uncharacteristic for her, though it was proud called for, given the situation and her past.

Demeigh was beginning to grow so bored she'd started a game of Reverse iSpy by herself when her name was suddenly called out.

"Rosario-Masters, Demeigh."

Growing red, Demeigh slid past her schoolmates and approached the stool, hesitating for a beat before sitting down. There was turning back now. Well, her last chance was probably back at the Station but it was definitely past due to chicken-out.

She didn't have time to get even slightly settled before the Hat was dropped on too of her, so low it covered her eyes.

"Why, hello there," it crooned, causing her face to redden even further. She wondered how much of her mind it actually red, if that's what it did. She tried hard not to think of taking a hot shower, which she desperately wanted to do.

"Very interesting... you are not of the average mind, are you? You think that you're ordinary, that even after finding out that you are magic that you're still another girl with a sad story."

Demeigh was quiet. Her throat suddenly felt to dry to speak. How did he know this?

"But you are definitely no ordinary girl, Miss Rosario-Masters, disregarding being a witch. I'm not one to give compliments out freely but you have earned this one: your soul is a beautiful one, as beautiful as you yourself, and it will guide you to do things for the betterment of your people. Don't waste time, because time does not care for you. If you aim to achieve high, start now, because now is all we have.”

She was frozen in place. All she could think about were the three questions that we're racing through her head: what, why and when? All of this was beginning to become confusing but maybe for good reason...according to thjs Sorting Hat she was had heard so infamously about.

“Aye...thank you, sir...but I...” She was thought about asking who exactly was considered her people, muggle, wizards, or everyone and beyond, but she figured it would ruin the moment. Besides...

A notion suddenly came to Demeigh, causing her to sit up right.

"Do you know who my father is? Did he go to this school?"

Her heart was racing as she awaited it's answer. If she found her father...it was change everything, literally.

As if nothing excited had just happened, the Sorting Hat said in the most monotonous voice,

"Your father is somewhere not meant to be seen."

It gave her just enough time to consider that before crying out in the most deafening of voices,

"You must be a RAVENCLAW."

Demeigh gawked for a moment, one at the fact of being sorted—into a House she didn't think she would actually get sorted into—and also because it didn't answer her question. But not a second had gone by before the Hat was swiped off her head and she was pushed towards the blue table, though she'd already known where the Ravenclaws sat by now. They cheered the loudest when her hosen House was called. She stood there for a second, taken in everything as best as she could, which was really that well, before sitting down next to a random person. She kept quiet as the next person was being sorted, wondering if they were going to be left as bewildered as her.

All she hoped was that Ravenclaw was good enough for her...or that she was good enough for it. Either way, she'd have to go through the toils and troubles for the rest of her school days at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Moving along with the horde of fellow eleven-year-olds guided by an adult towards the Great Hall, Cyrus could not help but advert his gaze from those before him to acknowledge the large stone walls within the castle, adorned with all varieties of decoration that were appropriate for the school. Lifelike portraits on the walls snatched the breath from his lungs in sudden jolts while he continued wandering forward, admiring the surroundings that would be his home away from home for the next seven years at least. Out of nowhere, and quite rudely, a mass found itself obstructing the way of Cyrus, causing him to walk directly into it which came off as a push on the other individual. Lowering his awed eyes from the walls towards the scowl of the person he'd budged, he returned the look in kind, his brow furrowed. The boy should not have started walking slower, Cyrus thought, shaking his head at the inconsideration of others.

Puffing out his midnight black cloak while the group turned into the Great Hall, Cyrus was once again captivated by the setting. Everything seemed larger than life compared to what he was used to in his homeschooling: Large portraits adorned the walls with more life breathed into them, large tables situated more kids than even TENS of hands could count! Even the ceiling looked like the midnight sky! A smirk settled upon his features, making itself feel right at home. His hands searched for the knot of his tie, readjusting it to be both smart, yet not too tight to be devoid of consideration for his windpipe. It'd be just right while he walked ahead with the group to listen to the Headmasters speech and the Sorting Hats song.

It felt like he was in a land of make-believe, but in fairness, most muggles would say he was. That line of thought immediately erased the veneration he held for the location, his hazel eyes dropping down towards the Sorting Hat as it filtered the personality of person after person. The girl currently being assessed was sorted into Ravenclaw. A peculiar house, he thought, as their animal was the only one capable of flying.. without assistance from a catapult or a trebuchet, mind you. Imagining not only a honey badger, but a snake, as well as a lion hurtling through the air, warmed him inside at the mere thought of such a comical action. The raven would be so surprised to realise its peers now shared its talent!

"Cyrus Langley"

The voice called out from the front. The ensuing silence threatened to dampen the boys confidence, to act as a hurdle before him so that he could possibly fall. Falling in front of so many people would indeed be humiliating. Shrugging his shoulders, the burden of the thought dropped from his body the same as the tightness in his muscles, as he gently pushed through his peers and maintained a confident saunter towards the sorting hat. The nerve in him slowly disappeared the closer he got to the not only sentient but intelligent hat. Don't show it. Keep the image up, they can't know, he told himself.

Turning around once he arrived at the stool, his beaming smile offered a sense of self-assurance, which wasn't entirely wrong. The boy knew he belonged in this school among the great wizards of old. This was merely the cornerstone in which his legend would be forged. Lowering down into the seat, the weight of knowledge soon weighed upon his shoulders in replacement of angst.

"Mr Langley, eh. " The hat murmured, speaking louder after a few seconds of dissection, "I see a lot of majesty within you. You always stand tall and proud, even when you do not feel so bold... You have great ambitions, and a strong drive to ensure you rise to the challenge. Most importantly... you have not only a desire, but a compulsion for glory." For a few seconds, the hat went silent while its mouth wriggled, almost as if it was chewing on itself out of indecision. "GRYFFINDOR!" The hat roared, promptly before the weight was lifted from his body and Cyrus stood. He took a moment to take in the scene of so many people before him, as well as bask in the honour of the thunderous applause that came from each and every house, yet especially Gryffindor. His family away from home. Hop-skipping down the steps, Cyrus quickly strode towards the table of red and gold, joining a portion of the bench where another student moved up to give him room, introducing himself to the people around before turning to watch the rest of the ceremony.

"Felix Morningcrest."

As had been the pattern with the previous announcements, Hogwarts' Great Hall fell silent in anticipation of the next first year to be sorted. This name in particular, however, his name, sent a heady rush of adrenaline through Felix's veins. Standing as if commanded by invisible strings, the young boy was almost certain that everyone he passed could hear his heart beating on overtime as each step brought him closer and closer to the front of the hall. Nonetheless, he set his jaw and avoided any one person's gaze for fear of them reading the trepidation in his eyes and conflict in his heart.

Both his parents had been Slytherins and, up until arriving at Hogwarts, he was certain he would be the same. Green had always been his favorite color, an innate cunning his greatest tool, and rules a mere suggestion. However, after seeing the castle in all its glory and spending more time than was comfortable aboard a boat, Felix was having doubts or, perhaps more appropriately, a change of heart. He wasn't sure what house he wanted to represent, but having seen his new home he doubted there was a bad one in the bunch—the unknown be damned.

Sitting on a stool facing the entirety of the student body, Felix took a breath before everything went black. The sorting hat slipped on his head and down over his eyes blocking out much of the torchlight that lit the hall. It felt as if he had been locked inside a dark room by himself.

"Mmmm," the voice of the hat filled his mind. "Morningcrest is a name I've heard before. You're cunning like your father, charismatic like your mother, but..."

The hat clearly had a taste for the dramatic for it extended its pause for longer than Felix was altogether comfortable with.

"...But, it seems you are willing to go down a separate path than them, that takes bravery," if hats could nod then the sorting hat did just that. "Bravery to be different, bravery to stand out, and bravery to act. These are all traits of a..."

Another pause.

"GRYFFINDOR!!!" The hat exclaimed aloud for all to hear.

Next came the applause and whoops most prominently from those attired in crimson. Returning to the light as the hat was pulled from his head, Felix allowed a slim smile to slip across his face. In a few quick steps, he was among the people who would become his new family. They greeted him with handshakes, hugs, and nods of acknowledgment from the more reserved individuals.

This was home.

"If it scares you, it might be a good thing to try."

....sigh......The warmth of the great hall was a welcome relief from the small rowboats they had vacated only moments before. The last several hours or days had been a whirlwind, and if his feet weren’t steady on the ground Bo was confident he wouldn’t have the faintest where he was. In the last few days he’d been back to America cleaning out the remnants of a childhood home, back to London to an apartment that was promised to be temporary, an old house he could hardly understand that was the future, and now a lake of water replaced with a lake of black cloaks before him. Between jet lag and this he felt as though he could topple any moment.

It would seem however their first test, was to push this thought to the limit. The line was long, and he watched as each student was called and subsequently placed. He’d come with very little information on the “houses” and still wasn’t sure which he was interested in being apart of. As of right now he was leaning yellow, as it matches his hair. His eyes wandered over the older students, and what must have been the teachers, ignoring mostly the throng of other kids around him. He’d been in large meetings and crowds before, so that wasn’t what bothered him. He’d even been set on parade by his parents at business deals, so walking to the front to have some old hat thrown over his eyes wasn’t concerning, but the lack of knowing what was the best option was causing his brain to itch.

He couldn’t help but imagine what his parents had told him of Ilvermony, which had been his first choice. He’d thrown a fit before crossing the ocean, and again when his request to go back for school had been denied. All this pomp and loud hat nonsense when there was a statue that could do it quicker just made sense. Besides, in the States you could choose, this removal of freedom seemed bogged down in a useless tradition.

Just as these thoughts where going through his mind a voice shouted his name.

“Bocephus Miller!”

He felt his face scrunch into annoyance. His given name was far to country, and now it was out there. Trying to brush it off he made his way and sat on the stool, only for the world to go Black a moment later.

“Miller.......yes yes, a name I’ve heard many times........from many families..............yours I have not heard for many many years.....”

Bo’s mind instantly went from confused, to curios. What did the hat mean. Miller wasn’t exactly an uncommon name, but the hat made it sound as though it did know his family. He’d never asked his parents before, but the thought now was in his mind that someone in the family had been to Hogwarts before, the question thus being.....how long ago was that.

“Ambition........a desire to prove, these you have, but how are you going to get there....”

The hat stopped talking at its own question, and for the first time he got the feeling the hat was talking directly to him.

“I am.......I’d like to know how you want to get to where you want to be?”

Feeling his head shake he wondered how long he’d already been sitting here. “By myself I suppose........by being better than the next guy.” Silence, so much so he started to wonder if he’d done the right thing by merely thinking an answer, though just as he was about to speak out loud the hat began to talk again.

“I see.....that is why you think but not what you know. I don’t see books, and I don’t see warm hugs in your future...........I wonder if when the time comes you’ll stand and be brave?”

He felt his face again scrunch into annoyance. A hat with an attitude, you wouldn’t see this kind of sass from a statue he thought.

“Well then.............I think that settles it....you have potential Bo, but Only you can take it.....and you’ll need like minds to reach it.....remember that”

This latest exchange confused the young boy, out of instinct he felt himself shake his head as though to move the blonde hair from his face. Before he had much time to think or retort back however....

“SLYTHERIN!!”

Just like that the candle light that had seemed inadequate lit up his face. With squinting eyes he stood and was pushed in the right direction by the teacher. Silver and green met him as he found an empty seat. Looking around he thought he could make this work. Doubt however, would return when he made his way to the dungeon common room......
