Linda was deep inside her thoughts, still a bit cautious with her moves. After all this time she wasn't with her uncle. She was thinking whether she considered herself a child or not. Her previous year in Hogwarts Linda would definitely say she is. But September of this year ruined it and reminded about death. No one had to face it at young age. No one had to get the news about best friend's death in a letter. She was no longer a child she used to be, only recently learning to be happy again.
She glanced at Tristan, wondering if he noticed that for a moment her happiness was gone. However, it didn't really matter if he did. That pain, while getting less, still existed. Forcing herself to stop thinking about it, she wondered what was the reason for such sudden thoughts. Perhaps simple missing was what caused it all.
Perhaps. But even then they will spend more time with Slytherin, naturally. So the friend can easily change under influence from other people. However, I like your idea. It could be nice if it could work. She smiled. History of houses was going far back in time and usually, students were coming with stories from their parents or guardians. At least those who had magical background. Nevertheless, the idea was a good one. Should she actually try it? She wasn't sure.
Since third year? That sounds like quite some time. That's great that you found yourself such great companion. Both of you seem rather in harmony from little that I saw. Thank you for this moment. She smiled, returning Saverin back to Tristan. This was a precious moment, at least for her, and she was happy to experience it.

xxxxxThere was a moment where Tristan glazed off and his focus traveled far away from the girl in front of him. He was reminiscing on a thought he had never been able to bring himself to do before. How would his life have been if Edward was alive? How could he have hidden his magic, a part of who he was for the entirety of his life? Tristan would gladly have broken the Statute of Secrecy for the man Edward would have been if it had allowed him to share magic with his best friend. His face would have expressed some of the sorrow he still felt, the gentle pain that ached despite the time that had passed. Pain that comes from a death of a loved one, never would and never could, for if the pain went away quickly, it would signify a clear forgetting of the loved one, he would be grieving. Truth was, he had now lived more years without Edward than with. As he returned back to focus on Linda, the girl in front of him, he noticed a sadness upon her face as well and so he smiled sadly and commented, “There is a sadness upon your face that I know too well. Who was it that passed, dear Linda? I grieve with thee. Grief has always been a present companion of humanity, and yet, as the whole thrives on, so shall we.”
xxxxxTristan nodded his head in companionship and he hoped to display a bit of warmth despite the strange and cold creature that he was to many in Hogwarts. His true colors were fiery red and he was loyal to love, perhaps more than others might think. There was a pain with excess empathy and a pain with feeling as deeply as he did. Thus, he had shut down his emotions when he was younger, hoping that stamping down all that he felt would give him peace. In some way, it had. In some way, it had been the only way that he could have survived this long on his own. However, grief had awoken again and he had no choice but to grow by honoring his best friend’s and his tutor’s memories by fighting for what they believed in rather than pretending that he did not feel anything.
xxxxxHe took Saverin back and fondled the scales that were on his pet snake with gentleness. He smiled sadly and looked down, kneeling down so that Linda was at his eye level, saying, “Death is hard and so is grieving those we have lost. The only comfort that I have to give is that grief is love that lasts beyond the grave, and that love offers meaning to life even though it hurts.”
xxxxxTristan gently smiled to comfort the younger child and commented, “Perhaps we both should strive to remember our loved ones’ favorite things and experience them on their behalf, live a life that is worthy for them, live a life that honours the fact that we are blessed to have more years than them.”

Linda had to admit, for a moment she wasn't focused with Tristan or Saverin at all. However, there was a moment when a single thought crossed her mind, finding its way between grief. He looked like he was remembering something sad. Was it right or did she imagine it, Linda didn't know and neither she really focused on it. However, his next words caught her completely off guard. He knows it too well. Who passed? Linda looked at him, truly focusing now on his voice and eyes. Did he lose someone too? From the way he asked, it seemed like he did. Too well? I guess I shouldn't be surprised. We all are facing it in different times, sometimes more than once. She paused only for a second before continuing. My best friend and I knew about it from letter from her parents. She was with me here previous year. The grief of losing her grandfather already subsided as time went on and couple of years passed since that day. But this, this still was fresh. However, she knew that with more time she will learn again to live with these memories without them breaking her from inside.
His next words and actions brought her some comfort. Perhaps it was because he knew the feeling so he could understand her now. Or probably it was because he was older, so he could possibly know how to live with grief and all the memories that were left behind. Unfulfilled wishes and dreams that were never destined to be completed. However, his words, his offer was exactly about fulfilling those dreams. A way out of pain she so desperately needed to find. So, perhaps this was the reason she found him comforting at this moment.
Memories will always stay, haunting and making us miss those moments in our lives. But you are right. Probably, we should try to experience more in our lives, something that they'd like or something that we dreamed about having with them. So let's learn to accept it in a new way and experience life differently. There's still time to make some dreams come true.
